the wawa. we are getting reports of a possible problem, eastbound 66 near 29 gainesville a construction barrel is rolling around in the right lane. stay to the left. so everything else is quiet. you will find just nice, steady volume of traffic. no reports of significant issues on the beltway or in the secondaries. protesters in chicago are planning to march this black friday over the fatal police shooting of laquan mcdonald. they will demonstrate down michigan avenue later this morning and try to shut down the city's popular shopping district, the magnificent mile. jesse jackson organized this march. protesters are calling for the superintendent and the state's attorney to step down over that video of a white police officer killing a black teenager last year. organizers are calling the black friday protest a university march and rally. back to you.

>> thank you very much. as those protests are going on, we are seeing new video from the shooting that sparked all of this. some of that video may be disturbing to see. it shows angles from police dash cam of 17-year-old laquan mcdonald before a police officer shot and killed him. in the video, you can see the officer drive through the parking lot as he chases mcdonald down. after mcdonald was shot no officer sees if he's okay. there's no audio on any of the tapes, so we don't know what police are saying. >> in my experience, i never had a case with an audio recording. >> that was an attorney for the mcdonald family. he wants more information including why it took so long for that video to be released. a man who jumped the white house fence is facing criminal charges. the white house was on lockdown for several hours yesterday after joseph caputo jumped the newly upgraded fence wearing an american flag. he had a binder in his teeth. president obama and his family

were inside for the holiday. caputo was arrested by secret service agents after taking just a few steps on the front lawn but not before raising his arms in triumph. news 4 megan fitzgerald has more on caputo and a photo that was taken outside the white house a few days ago. that is coming up in 30 minutes. this is the seventh time in two years that someone jumped the white house fence. the most serious attempt was last september when omar gonzalez made it all the way into the white house carrying a knife. about a month later, the perimeter fence was scaled before canines took him down, and in april jerome hunt took a knife into the area. a number of these attempts have been happening in the recent years. more on the latest attempt coming up. animal rights activists plan

to protest a controversial pet store in chantilly today. on monday fairfax county animal control officers seized all the animals at dreamy puppy. the officers are checking to see if 40 to 50 puppies are healthy and old enough to be sold legally. county workers declared the building unsafe. no charges we can tell you have been filed against that business. new developments now after last week's terror attack in mali. special forces say they arrested two men where the attack happened. it's not clear what the men were accused of doing. 19 were killed when two gunmen ran into a hotel one week ago. you may see demonstrators outside walmart as you shop. employees are demanding a living wage of $15 an hour and want more regular schedules.

they say having neither makes it hard to buy food for their families. today's protest is happening at the walmart on 8th street northwest about 9:00 this morning. for some of you it started last night, but today is officially black friday. it's called the super bowl of shopping. doors are just opening at many malls across the country. molette green is among some of those shopping right now. molette, were you able to track down that earring or buy some new ones? >> reporter: good morning. the entire mall here at westfield montgomery just opened moments ago. this is what black friday shoppers have been talking about, that sign there. they want big savings, big sales. we're seeing lots of young shoppers, some with parents, and parents are obviously buying, right? the national retail federation tells us they're expecting higher sales in the final weeks for merchants to make their

projections. more americans are at work. they have jobs. so therefore they have money to spend. here's the tricky part, people are still looking for those deep discounts that they saw when we were in a recession and the merchants dropped the prices. people tell me they still want those deep discounts, so it will be interesting seeing how much money people are actually going to be spending today and throughout the holiday season. i'm molette green live at westfield montgomery mall. back to you. thanks. as we've been telling you, many of the nation's retailers started cashing in on the holiday season on thanksgiving day itself. here's some good news for shoppers gearing up to head out today, you can expect a new round of sales for the official start of the holiday shopping season. one local woman just could not wait. >> we're just going to the car to drop these off. we're coming back. >> to do more shopping? >> right. right. we're not finished.

>> many are gearing up for that second round. today is black friday, apparently technology did not get that word at this kmart. if you were planning on shopping there today to snag a deal, you may be disappointed. shoppers came face-to-face with this notice yesterday saying the store was closed due to technical difficulties. the manager telling us the store lost its internet connection yesterday afternoon, so the registers had to be shut down. we just spoke for the store, they're waiting for a technical team to arrive and fix the problem. no doubt they are losing out on lots of money and shoppers in these really crucial hours for a lot of stores. >> i.t. needed at aisle three. hurricane sandra barrelling towards part of california. the watch some people are under this morning and whether or not the storm is expected to make landfall. >> new details and an e. coli outbreak hitting costco stores

if you shop at costco you want to hear this one. >> this is a big alert. a california farm recalling a vegetable mix that may be the source of e. coli in costco chicken salad. 19 people have fallen ill after eating the salad. taylor farms pacific is recalling a mix of diced celery and onion used in the salad. the salad was also sold at target and starbucks.

today's the day. black friday is here. shoppers will be out in full force today in search of those big deals. more than 100 million americans are expected to shop this weekend. nbc's jay gray joins us this morning from the country's biggest mall in minnesota. you're a brave soul being out there. is it as crowded now as it was when the doors first opened? >> we have seen it come in waves. we've been talking throughout the morning. we have taken it up a level. seriously, we are up on the second level of this mall. they are coming in waves. a lot of people finding a lot of deals here, but we expect that along with the crowds to grow as

this day continues. >> reporter: the rush began before the turkey was even cold. >> we're starting early this time. might as well, you know? early bird specials. >> reporter: now as thanksgiving gives way to black friday, analysts say the crowds and bargains will be bigger. >> about 55% of consumers will be out shopping on black friday. that's because 40% of consumers feel they can get the best discounts at that time. >> reporter: many looking to save on high-dollar holiday gifts. >> like appliances, television, all the electronics, even big ticketed high-end designer accessories like handbags and shoes. >> reporter: when they do find what they're looking for, data from s.a.s. shows 29% of shoppers will spend more this year than last year. that surge driven by 18-year-old to 29-year-old millennials, many making their purchases in person and online. >> we're seeing a great response to online offers.

he would feel like we're off to a great start online. >> reporter: the start to another mad dash for deals, which, for many, has become a holiday tradition. yeah. it really has. we see a lot of families, a lot of friends out, and they all say they're finding good deals. that's the latest live from the mall of america, i'm jay gray, news 4. republican presidential candidate ben carson traveling abroad to meet with syrian refugees today. carson plans to visit a refugee camp in northern jordan. he has been strongly opposed to the u.s. accepting syrian refugees. recently the retired neurosurgeon has faced questions over his foreign policy knowledge. this happened at a rally in south carolina. it appears as though in the video you're about to see that presidential candidate, donald trump, is mocking a reporter's disability. but as halle jackson reports, trump is the one now demanding an apology.

>> reporter: donald trump under fire today for seemingly mocking a reporter's physical disability. >> oh, i don't know what i said. i don't remember! >> reporter: the reporter, serge kovaleski, works for the "new york times" and has a congenital joint condition. trump was referring a 2001 story written by kovaleski after september 11th which said authorities detained and questioned a number of people allegedly seen celebrating the attacks. >> the poor guy, oh, i don't know what i said. i don't remember! he's going like, i don't remember! maybe that's what i said. >> reporter: this week kovaleski said the article does not back up trump's widely debunked claim that thousands of new jersey muslims cheered 9/11. trump's tirade triggering a twitter backlash. a new low, disqualifying. the "new york times" writing we're outraged that he would ridicule the physical appearance of one of our reporters. critics argue trump crossed a line. others wonder whether for him a line still exists. >> he still has a hard-core base at this point.

to date he's said nothing that's offensive. >> reporter: trump, demanding an apology, is now taking aim at the times and the reporter. he should stop using his disability to grandstand and get back to a paper that's rapidly going down the tubes. adding in a statement, if mr. kovaleski is handicapped, i would not know because i do not know what he looks like. advocate for peoples with disabilities are not pleased. quote, it is unacceptable for a child to mock another child's disability on the playground, never mind a presidential candidate mocking someone's disability. kovaleski says it doesn't surprise him that trump would do something this low rent given his track record. halle jackson, nbc news, washington. a mix of snow, sleet, winds and flooding is making it hard for a lot of thanksgiving travelers to get home. this is in northern california where winds just tore apart an open market. hurting 11 people. for other states, snow is making it harder to get around. snow has already hit the sierras

other clips show what is said to be air strikes near the turkish border. if confirmed as a russian attack, it would be run of russ russia's closest air strikes to turkish territory. nbc news, by the way, has not independently verified the video. in paris now, a big memorial service just ended to honor the victims of the paris terror attacks. it is a national day of mourning there. you can see french president francois hollande led the service where they read all 130 victims names. he also called on the people to fly the french flag from their homes, which is not typically done in france. some of the victims families chose not to attend the memorial. they said they felt france could have prevented the attacks. members of the california band eagles of death are opening up about the paris terror attacks.

it, but i might be compelled to buy a new pair if i can find a deal. most shoppers say that's what they're looking for. millennials are big this holiday shopping season. i just spoke to a teen shopper who came here after she had her thanksgiving meal with the family. then returned in time for the mall to open this morning. and here's what she said. >> one year the store couldn't open until midnight, but they gave away free leggings and sweatshirts, i said, yep. >> if you look behind me, there's deals in the windows at the stores. the national retail federation is expecting higher sales in the final weeks for merchants, and this black friday kind of kicks things off. they are looking for robust sales today. we'll keep an eye on it for you.

clenched between his teeth. president obama and his family were inside for the holiday. news 4's megan fitzgerald has more on caputo who is now facing criminal charges. >> reporter: cell phones were out and rolling moments after joseph caputo managed to scale the white house fence. >> many people were taking pictures. >> reporter: many of those pictures show the man wearing gloves, draped in the american flag with a binder in his mouth. sources close to the investigation say caputo took a few steps on the north lawn before being met by secret service agents who carried him away. his family members confirm that this is a picture of him standing in front of the white house just three days ago. today he ended up on the other side. >> whew. he was climbing like crazy. >> reporter: we've seen several people jump the fence in the last few years, this is the first time it happened since the spikes were installed over the

summer. >> any time someone successfully jumps the fence, no question there's a level of danger. >> reporter: more than three miles away, secret service agents investigated a ford taurus with connecticut tags and the words caput on the license. law enforcement sources tell news 4 the vehicle belongs to caputo. the white house was locked down for several hours and secret service officials are investigating yet again how a man made it to the other side. congresswoman eleanor holmes norton is not happy. she wants to meet with secret service leaders over this latest breach at the white house fence. news 4 was told after members were briefed and shown the spikes and assured they would work, i'm flabbergastered that almost immediately it didn't. norton wants the secret service to brief her next week on what happened. fairfax county police are trying to find andre wilkins, he's suspected of killing a man and wounding two others. markel davis died in the

shooting. police also seized more than a dozen items from an apartment including bullets, casings, syringes and pills. d.c. water is suing the epa. d.c. water says the agency did not add up numbers right when it tested for e. coli in the city's water that testing could lead to new upgrades that could cost as much as $1 billion. that's according to the "washington post." d.c. water says spikes in e. coli levels can happen at its treatment plant but are not representative. today you can catch pretty sites at the national zoo. zoo lights is back. this is the zoo's way of celebrating the holidays. the zoo hangs hundreds of thousands of christmas lights every year. you can enjoy them free. zoo lights opens tonight at

out of the black friday madness. about a month ago many retailers said their doors would be closed today. the aim was to encourage a lot of you to #optoutside and enjoy the outdoors. many national and state parks are offering special deals. many offering free entry today. just to encourage you to get out. >> a lot of folks headed out to the mall in the next hour or two. temperatures in the upper 30s, low 40s, but this afternoon we'll be near 60 degrees. here's future weather, sunshine to get the day started. couple high clouds off and on throughout the course of the day. rain chances are staying away from us until much later into the weekend. if you're traveling today towards chicago or st. louis or oklahoma city, dallas/ft. worth, you could run into rain delays in your travels if you're headed

at the live desk, new developments in the attack at a luxury hotel in mali that killed

19 people. mali special forces arrested two men in the capital city where the seven-hour siege happened. no new information has come out about what role they may have played. the two gunmen who stormed the hotel a week ago were killed in the attack. an american aide worker from takoma park was one of the victims. we are following the latest on the paris terror attacks. belgium lowered the lthreat levl for the first time in days. it's a step below the maximum alert but that doesn't rule out a serious risk for an attack. on thursday, police conducted three new raids outside brussels.

tons of sunshine. we probably won't make it to 70 but we'll get within a whisper of it this afternoon. most of the afternoon today will be spent with temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. plenty of sunshine around. high today, 65 in hagerstown. 69 in culpeper. almost 70 in fredericksburg. dry today, tonight through tomorrow. the change comes about 8:00 saturday night. that's when the rain chances move back into the metro area. those rain chances will go into sunday. here's future weather, starting tomorrow afternoon, 2:00, showers across the shenandoah valley. by 5:00, 6:00, 7:00, that rain chance on top of the metro area. rain chances into sunday. sunday travel could be slowed a bit by the rain chance. mild for today and tomorrow. cool and showery around here for sunday. highs back down to the 50s. cold, cloudy day on monday. once we get rid of the sunshine tomorrow, might be a while before we see it again.
