a hit-and-run nearly one week ago. the man who jumped the white house fence wasn't sure he'd survive the stunt. find out what investigators say he left behind. >> we're starting tonight with that breaking news in southeast d.c. where five people have been shot in a matter of minutes. shomari stone is live at one of the crime scenes. where are you and what's going on? >> reporter: it is an active scene right here, on the 2100 block southeast. take a look here. there are three police cruisers, gathering evidence, talking to people in the community. if you come over here, see those blinking lights in that police cruiser, behind it is a car that is somehow involved in this sho shooting, three people shot, two men, one woman. let's roll video. sources say an hour ago one

woman was shot in the 22nd, southeast area and and around 8:00 p.m., another man was shot. and the man shot in the 2100 block of albany avenue southeast is in critical condition. as for the other people, that would leave us with four. we don't know their condition. i talked to commissioner anthony muhammad said quote the violence in southeast has to be stopped." we need more resources for young people in ward 8. i talked to paul trampton and says there needs to be a curfew is southeast d.c. and both plan to present their ideas to mayor muriel bowser. as far as suspects in these case, police urge any with information to give them a call and call detectives anonymously, live in southeast d.c., i'm shomari stone, news4.

another big story developing in colorado springs, we're getting our first look at a police officer killed in a shootout, officer garrett swasey is one of those shot and killed. the threat is not over and police are examining a possible explosive in what they think is the suspect's car. >> reporter: colorado springs police say a gunman who stormed a planned parenthood office has been captured alive but not before killing at least three people including officer garrett swasey. >> this is a terrible terrible tragedy that occurred in colorado springs today. obviously, we mourn the loss of the two civilian victims. we mourn the loss of a very brave police officer. >> reporter: the end came nearly five hours after it started. >> at 11:38 this morning received a call for services for shots fired.

we had officers respond to the scene. when officers arrived, they did encounter active gunfire. >> reporter: teams of heavily armed tactical police rushed the scene where they confronted the shooter and the standoff began with police and the suspect f e firing at each other over the course of several hours. five other officers were wounded with nine people in all injured by the gunman and taken to the hospital. >> we saw a lot of individual acts of bravery today and actually a lot of bravery as a team. it was amazing how first spo spopders and law enforcement came together today and worked well and efficiently but still a tragedy. >> reporter: police say the gunman was armed with an ak-47. his motive for carrying out the shooting is not yet known. it's a complicated crime scene and officials say it could take hours or days to process the

what we're learning about the victim, darcy. >> reporter: first let me show you where this took place. right here in this intersection, we're on the prince george's-d.c. border. friends and family tell me he was a great guy, family man and heading to his uncle's house when the crash happened. >> he was everything. he was my world. it's hard to talk about him not being here. >> reporter: ayesha thomas is overcome with emotion talking about her 23-year-old son killed in a hit-and-run crash one week ago. >> overwhelming for a mother to find out her child didn't die from a disease but from someone's hands and they left them there. >> reporter: dozens of relatives and friends attended the vigil to remember a man known as the glue that held the family together. a son, a brother, uncle, a

cousin. >> he was very goofy. he was the life of the party. >> reporter: thomas died after the car he was driving collided with an suv at the intersection of southern avenue at east capitol street southeast. it happened last saturday evening at 8:00 p.m. evening in front of the metro heights station and police are investigating it as a hit-and-run. and the driver was driving away. >> i'm hurt forever. he was only 23, had a long life to live and only just getting started. >> reporter: he had a top security clearance that allowed him to clean government buildings and worked hard and took care of his family. they hope to find out exactly what happened and who was dri driving the suv. >> it's more bittersweet. i'm happy to have so many support him but i just wish he was here to see everybody get together. >> reporter: his funeral is p n planned tomorrow morning right here in capitol heights.

tonight, a river of lava is flowing out of the kilauea volcano in hawaii. none of the areas are in danger. it's been active and erupting for 30 years. this is one of the biggest lava flows they've seen. showing our military family how thankful we are for their service. wounded warriors and active troops were treated with their family. working with a few veterans groups to make it happen, about 200 people enjoyed a complementary dinner and the play, "ol river." >> it's great for us to take a

today is like a super bowl for shoppers and kicked off with people packed in stores and malls. a lot of shoppers spent the day with their computers and mobile phones. analysts say online shopping is up 15% compared to this day last year and a lot will be offering more in store deals after today. in one case, a deputy was swept away trying to rescue a diver. they found the deputy clinging to a tree and rescued her but waters are so high and fast they're not able to search for that driver. if you look at flooding there, looked like blizzard conditions in colorado and here we are protected by a beautiful bubble. >> it's a bubble of air sitting on top of us and means sunshine for us and means warm temperatures and it slides to
