new information in a shootout at a planned parenthood in colorado. police again talking to the suspect after catching him alive. and what they're saying about a possible motive. five shooting victims, four locations within an hour and a half, the connection d.c. police are making this morning. and with that good saturday morning. i'm david culver. >> and i'm angie goff. welcome to "news 4 today." we want to get straight to that new information that's out of colorado first. police identified the gunman, suspected of killinghy an offic and two other people in colorado. robert lewis dear is in custody, he is from south carolina. nine others including five colorado springs police officers were shot during that standoff

at planned parenthood. we get the latest from nbc's lee an greg. >> reporter: colorado springs police say a gunman who stormed a planned parenthood office has been captured alive. but not before killing at least three people, including officer garrett swasey. >> this is a terrible, terrible tragedy that's occurred here in colorado springs today. obviously we mourn the loss of the two civilian victims, we mourn the loss of a very brave police officer. >> reporter: the end came nearly five hours after it started. teams of heavily armed tactical police rushed the scene, a shopping center where they confronted the shooter and the standoff began with the suspect and police firing at each other over the course of several hours. >> 241, i've been shot. >> we're pinned down. we're getting active gunfire. >> reporter: five other officers were wounded with nine people in all injured by the gunman and taken to area hospitals. >> we saw a lot of individual acts of bravery and a lot of bravery as a team.

it was amazing how law enforcement and first responders came together eñtoday, worked vy well and efficiently today, but it still is a horrible tragedy. >> reporter: police say the dpan was armed with an ak-47, his motive for carrying out the shooting is not yet known. leanne greg, nbc news, colorado springs. planned parenthood released a statement this morning saying in part, quote, we arerateful to report that all of our staff are safe and accounted for. the gunman's motive remains unknown, as does whether planned parenthood was targeted dlip rattly. it's going to take sometime for police to find a motive. we're hearing incredible stories of survival from outside the clinic. you're sitting in your car when you lockfw eyes with the gunman. that's what this man says when the shooter shot at him. >> i saw myself in the mirror and it was like, my god, he was aiming for my head. it's just weird to stair into the face of somebody like that.

and he didn't win. >> incredible right there. he says he's thankful to the s.w.a.t. team that got him and his friends out. he is now out of the hospital. the eight others who were wounded are expected to recover. you can follow the latest on the nbc washington app. chaos in southeast washington last night. five people were shot within 90 minutes, the shootings happened all over. take a look, two on alabama avenue, one on savannah street, another on third street all starting around 8:00 last night. one of the victims is in critical condition, some neighbors are even suggesting a curfew to help curb some of the violence in the area. so far there are no suspects in any of the shootings. if you happen to know anything that can help, call police. right now we are in the second half of the holiday weekend, even though we're getting possibly some rain today, amelia segal says today

is going to be better than dkmerñ today we are still track mild temperatures, highs in the 60s, noticeably cooler tomorrow. for most of us the day will be dry, but as we move into the evening hours showers will be pushing into the area. i'm tracking what looks to be light to moderate rain impacting the pan haldel of west virginia, however, reports coming out of this area only reporting overcast skies, i don't think that's hitting the ground. what is hitting the ground is this large air of i can't rain impacting parts of pennsylvania, ohio, back into indiana, illinois, parts of kentucky and tennessee. this will eventually make its way into the region mainly toptd. right now we are at 51 degrees, 8:00 a.m. the metro area is dry at 50, by noon cloudy and still dry for most with a temperature of 61, by 3:00 we will be tracking scattered showers north of washington with a temperature of 65. that will be our high for the day. david, coming up in my full weather i will be showing you future weather with the rain moves in and when it moves out

coast guard and recovered with the help of a local professional boat man. experts say similar to the unmanned spacex falcon 9 which blew up shortly after takeoff from cape canaveral. two men are dead after a poon toon boat flipped and sank off the coast of new jersey. seven people were aboard that boat. police believe strong currents are to blame. nearby boats and surfers rushed to help some of the victims before the water before emergency responders arrived. a fairfax county maní@ faci multiple charges this morning after police say he slammed into several police cruisers on purpose. fairfax county police tried to pull over sul ton morgan for a traffic stop in springfield yesterday but say he sped off. they chased him in a mile. he is accused of hitting three police cars including a state trooper's vehicle.

they finally caught up with morgan when he crashed into a fence right there, that was in alexandria. talk about a brush with death, a connecticut dash cam captured that, amazing video, watch closely that car, we can roll it again, it comes out of nowhere slams into that car thì highway. you can see the driver just missed the trooper and two other people standing by the guardrail. police say that that car going about 85 miles per hour. that 21-year-old driver we just showed you a picture of him. he was arrested and faces multiple charges including reckless endangerment he only suffered minor injuries. >> incredible. coming up at 6:11. the family of a young man killed in a hit and run preparing to say their final good-byes today, but first they're making a request. let's take a live look outside, amelia segal says today is your best bet to hang those holiday lights, maybe get out there and pick a tree, but you

a man killed in a hit and run accident will be laid to rest today. enrico thomas died last weekend, he was just if years old. his friends and family tell us another driver ran away from that crash which killed him. darcy spencer has more on the man they say was taken away too soon. >> he was everything. he was my world. he was just -- it's just hard just to even talk about him, him not being here. >> reporter: iyesha thomas is overcome with emotion at a candle lit vigil in memory of his 23-year-old son enrico thomas, he was killed in a hit and run crash one week ago. find out that her child didn't die from a disease but from someone's hands and they left

him there. >> reporter: dozens of relatives and friends attended the vigil to remember a man known as being the glue that held the family together. a son, a brother, an uncle, a cousin. >> he was very goofy. he was the life of the party. >> reporter: thomas died after the car he was driving collided with an suv at the intersection of southern avenue and east capitol street in southeast. it happened last saturday at 8:18 in the evening in front of the capitol heights metro station. police are investigating it as a hit and run. relatives say the suv driver ran away. >> i'm hurt forever, you úçknow because he was only 23. he had a long life to live and he was just getting started. >> reporter: relatives say rico had a top security clearance that allowed him to clean government buildings. he worked hard and took care of his family. they hope to find out exactly what happened and who was driving the suv. >> it's more bittersweet. i'm happy so many people support him, but i just wish he was here

massive u.n. climate conference. it was a different scene than black friday's past, chicago police arrested three people as part of the protests on the magnificent mile. hundreds of people marched down michigan avenue and blocked the entrance to some stores. many say they're outraged it took authorities over a year to release the video and charge the officer in the deadly police shooting of laquan mcdonald. protestors are demanding the mayor, state's attorney and police chief all step down. city center is getting ready for a big holiday celebration tonight, a tree lighting ceremony is being held and you will want to wats ñ out for roa clear urs, i street and new york avenue will be closed from 5:00 until 9:00 tonight. the tree lighting is at 6:00. eun yang will be there to help flip on the switch. >> i feel like folks at news have been lighting a lot of trees in the area. >> my four-year-old daughter helped us out yesterday at the rusten town center. we had the parade in the

tracking the potential for some light showers in the panhandle of west virginia, that might not actually be hitting the ground, but as we widen out the image you can see all of this rain here, this is going to slowly sink south into washington throughout the day here making it here during the evening hours. if you are north of the district you could be dealing with some showers this afternoon so you do want to keep that in mind if you're planning on getting the tree later today. at 8:00 a.m. we're cloudy but dry, noon still mainly dry at that point. if you are trying to make plans outdoors if you go earlier you will be just fine for everyone, but here is what happens at 3:00, we start to track some scattered generally light showers in matters of montgomery, maybe parts of fairfax, loudoun counties as well. once we start to hit the evening hours future weather wants to keep us dry at 9:00, i think we will have more shower activity on the radar at that point. tomorrow at 6:00 a.m. a soggy start, light to moderate rain that will continue through the

lunchtime hours, we will dry out through the afternoon, 3:00 we are cloudy but dry, that rain could slow travel, you want to keep that in mind for tomorrow. currently we are at/l 51 degree and highs today in the 60s, low 60s north of town, mid 60s here in town and upper 60s, near 70 degrees in areas like charlottesville and fredericksburg. your weekend outlook exercising good today, tomorrow have the rain gear, heading to the park, again, better to do it today, have inn indoor plans for tomorrow. generally showers not tracking anything heavy and a high tomorrow of 53 degrees, by dinnertime temperatures will be in the 40s. on monday we continue to track chilly temperatures, the high of 48, showers move in later in the day mainly during the evening hours, tracking showers on tuesday, wednesday and thursday, guy, going to keep it dry but temperatures around 50 for a

friday. so focused on the temperatures but some rain as well, angie, i will have more on shower potential coming up in my full forecast in just over ten minutes. the latest man to jump the white house fence is expected in court on monday, but he's under extra watch this morning. police found a suicide note inside the virginia home with joseph caputo was staying. he also left a will and an audio message for his mom. caputo appeared in court friday and was released to the secret service for a psychological evaluation, but delegate norton is demanding to know how he got over this fence. >> i appreciate that this probably could have stopped 95% of the people, but terrorists are not 95% of the people, nor was this man. >> and norton says she is going to ask the secret service for a full briefing next week. new york police stepping up patrols around planned parenthood locations after yesterday's attack in colorado. the nypd sent officers to locations throughout the city

throughout that standoff, the agencies say there are no specific threats to planned parenthood locations and had increased patrols as an extra precaution. d.c. police chief cathy la near was just on 60 minutes talking about what to do if you're ever in an active shooter situation. she says your options run -- your options are run, hide or fight. >> i always say if you can get out getting out is your best option, if you are in a position to try to take the gunman down or take the gunman out it's the best option for saving lives before police can get there. >> chief lanier added it's extremely unlikely any of us will be in that situation but knowing what can do can save lines. a maryland state trooper has been suspended with pay for driving drunk and crashing his car. he works as an aviation technician in frederick county, police say he slipped his car early thursday morning. the 26-year-old faces dui and ]. he has been with the department

for more than a year. the latest in decision 2016. gop candidate ben carson is in the middle east this morning. he will meet with syrian refugees in jordan. dr. carson due criticism for using an analogy that seems to compare refugees to rabid dogs. he condemned president obama's plan to welcome 10,000 syrian refugees to the united states, carson's camp says he will tour a refugee camp but it's not releasing many more details. maryland governor rear hogan is long those calling for the federal government to do more for security before welcoming" refugees. now one maryland county is taking action on its own. >> reporter: syrian refugees are welcome to resettle in montgomery county. county council president george lesson that you will says all nine county executives signed a letter to the federal government with that invitation. >> 10,000 refugees spread over
