the south. north of the district, parts of montgomery, frederick, loudoun and washington counties, you will be dealing with scattered showers mainly later today. here is the latest on the radar, tracking very light showers, pretty much only sprinkles impacting parts of the panhandle of west virginia and far western maryland. you can see as this activity tries to push toward the east it's just encountering very dry air and falling apart, but as we work our way throughout the day we will continue to see showers have more success making their way in. this is going to be the area of rain that eventually sinks south and everybody will be getting rain tonight. don't really need the umbrella today. right now we are at 50 degrees, 10:00 a.m. dry at 56, cloudy throughout the day, 1:00 a temperature of 62, high today is 65, we will hit that at 4:00 p.m. and at that point showers north of washington i will be showing you future weather in just over ten minutes tracking the rain moving into and out of the area hour by hour. police identified the gunman suspected of killing an officer

and two other people in colorado. robert lewis dear is in custody, he is from south carolina. nine others including five colorado springs police officers were shot during that standoff at planned parenthood. we get the very latest now from nbc's leanne greg. >> reporter: colorado springs police say a gunman who stormed a planned parenthood office has been captured alive, but not before killing at least three people, including officer garrett swasey. >> this is a terrible tragedy that's occurred here in colorado springs today. obviously we mourn the loss of the two civilian victims, we mourn the loss of a very brave police officer. >> reporter: the end came nearly five hours after it started, teams of heavily armed tactical police rushed the scene, a shopping center where they confronted the shooter and a standoff began with the suspect and police firing at each other over the course of several hours. >> we're pinned down, we're getting active gunfire.

>> reporter: five other officers were wounded with nine people in all injured by the gunman and taken to nearby hospitals. >> we saw a lot of individual acts of bravery today and actually a lot of bravery as a team. it was amazing how law enforcement and first responders came together today, worked very well and efficiently today but it still is a horrible tragedy. >> reporter: police say the gunman was armed with an ak-47, his motive for carrying out the shooting is not yet known. leanne greg, nbc news. planned parenthood released a statement this morning saying in part, we are grateful to safe and accounted for. the gunman's motive remains unknown as does whether planned parenthood was targeted deliberately. as you heard angie mention police still looking to find out just what that motive was. meantime we're hearing incredible stories of survival from those outside that clinic. imagine this, you're sitting in your car when you lock eyes with the gunman, that's what happened

to ozzy locano who says the shooter fired right at him. >> i saw myself in the mirror and it's like, my god, he was aiming for my head. it's just weird to stair into the face of somebody like that. and he didn't win. >> locano says he is thankful to the situate that got him and his friends out. he is now out of the hospital. the eight others who were wounded are all expected to recover. you can follow the latest on this shooting by down loading our nbc washington app. chaos8&# in southeast washington last night, five people were shot within just 90 minutes, the shootings happened all over the place, take a look. two on alabama avenue, one on savannah street and another on 3rd street, all starting at around 8:00 last night. now, one of the victims is in critical condition and some neighbors are even suggesting a curfew to help curb some of that violence in the area.

a third man shortly after that. investigators say davis has since shaved off his dreadlocks. if you have seen him police want to hear from you. donald trump's poll numbers are dropping after his latest controversy. a new reuters poll now showing about 31% of republicans polled continue to support trump. now, that's down 12% from a week ago. this comes after trump's comments on creating a data base of muslims and claims that he ridiculed a "new york times" reporter. trump's numbers are still double his closest competitor, though. dr. ben carson is at 15% and senators marco rubio and ted cruz are both at 8%. trump will have to defend himself, however, when he's questioned by chuck todd on "meet the press" tomorrow. dr. ben carson will also have t[ clarify his foreign policy positions. that's tomorrow at 10:30 right here on nbc 4 after "news4 today." happening today, it's really become a tradition of sorts after black friday comes, well,

small business saturday. >> this morning those smaller stores are welcoming customers for a big day of sales. those numbers expected to exceed, get this, $14 billion this year. news 4's derrick ward is live in old town alexandria this morning. how is it looking so far? >> reporter: you know, this is always a busy place this time of the week on a saturday morning, but of course it takes on a special significance this being small business saturday. you know, this has shades of the old greek agoras, the open marketplace. if you go just beyond it on to duke street you see those 18th and 19th century traditions of the small shops, usually brought on by the presence of a port, port of alexandria spurred a lot of the commerce here that carries on. but this week and starting today folks want you to pay particular attention to this and spend your money here to do some of your christmas shopping. the shopping will be having some discounts and specials for people who are here for small business saturday. there are actually going to be elves wandering about on the

you've got to check this out. a piece of metal recovered from the sea off the isle of sicily may be from an american space rocket. this is reported to the u.k. coast guard and was recovered with the help of some local professional boat men. experts say it is similar to the unmanned spacex falcon 9 which you may recall blew up shortly after takeoff, that was back in june, though. two men are dead after a pontoon boat flips over and sinks off the coast of new jersey. seven people were on board the boat near point pleasant beach. police believe that the strong currents are to blame. nearby boats and surfers rushed to help some3n of the victims fm the water before emergency responders were able to get there. the other five victims are expected to recover. a fairfax county man facing multiple charges after police say he slammed into several

cruisers on purpose. fairfax county police tried to pull over zoltan morgan yesterday but say he sped off. multiple police agencies got involved with the chase, lasted about a mile. in that time according to police he hit three cars including a state police trooper's vehicle. they finally caught up with him when he crashed into this fence that you see right there in alexandria. talk about a brush with death, a connecticut state trooper's dash damage tap toured that, some amazing video as you watch closely that car basically -- we will show it to you again -- just comes out of nowhere and slams into that disabled car on the highway. you can see that the driver barely missed the trooper and two people standing by that guardrail. police say that car was going about 85 percent. that man was a 21-year-old driver who was arrested and faces multiple charges including reckless endangerment he only suffered minor injuries. >> connecticut has the move over

developing now, a waffle houseworker is shot dead inside the restaurant in mississippi. the 52-year-old waitress was enforcing the no smoking policy by asking a man to put out his cigarette. that is when he pulled out his gun and shot her in the head. 45-year-old monty mount is charged with first degree murder. coworkers say that the waitress was a beautiful sold. his bond is being t held on a $ million bond. a man killed in a hit and run accident will be laid to rest today.

enrico thomas died last weekend, just 23 years old, his friends and family tell us another driver ran away from the crash that killed him. darcy spencer has more now on the man they say was taken away way too soon. >> he was everything. he was my world. he was just -- and it's just hard just to even talk about him not being here. >> reporter: iyesha thomas is overcome with emotion at a candlelight vigil in memory of her 23-year-old son, rico thomas he was killed in a hit and run crash nearly one week ago. >> overwhelming for a mother to find out that her child is -- you know, didn't die from a disease, but from someone's hands and they left him there. >> reporter: dozens of relatives and friends attended the vigil to remember a man known as being the glue that held the family together. a son, a brother, an uncle, a cousin. >> he was very goofy. he was the life of the party. >> reporter: thomas died after the car he was driving collided

with an suv at the intersection of southern avenue and east capitol street in southeast. it happened last saturday at 8:18 in the evening in front of the capitol heights metro station. police are investigating it as a hit and run, relatives say the suv driver ran away. >> i'm hurt forever, you know, because he -- he was only 23. he had a long life to live and he was just getting started. >> reporter: relatives say rico had a top security clearance that allowed him to clean government buildings, he worked hard and took care of his family. they hope to find out exactly what happened and who was driving the suv. >> it's more bittersweet. i'm happy to have so many people support him but i just wish he was here to see everybody get together. >> darcy spencer with that report right there. the family has put together a fund to help with funeral expenses. if you'd like to learn more about that we put a link on an nbc washington app, just search thomas family. belgium continues to be on

larger system here and this is what's going to bring a steady rainover night tonight. here is the latest timing with future weather. midday hours still mainly dry, rain impacting parts of west i-81. it's not until the afternoon until that happens. so parts of montgomery, loudoun, frederick, washington counties even down into flock yer county scattered showers around this afternoon. the earlier the better north of the district. washington and areas south showers move in during the evening and overnight hours. it's a soggy start tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m. so you want to have the umbrella handy. we continue to track showers through the midday hours butu7' the afternoon we dry out, everybody should be dry by about 2:00 but definitely 3:00 p.m. traveling sunday evening the weather looking good but if you're traveling in the morning you want to keep in mind you will be dealing with wet roads, a high tomorrow of 53, on monday we continue to tumble with a high of 48, showers move back into the area later in the day,
