right now at 6:00, a chilly and soggy end to the holiday weekend. we'll have the timing of rain moving back in for the start of the work week. can you believe it? the skins are tide for first place. we're standing by with reaction to today's big win. i'm live at the rest stop in northern virginia where it's slow going for travelers trying to get home from their travel destinations. >> announcer: news 4 at 6:00 starts now. off the top at 6:00, major traffic tieups on one of the busine busiest travel days of the year. first, it's a wet sunday. there's more rain on tap for the

beginning of your work week. we have a preview. >> we were dealing with generally light showers today. here's the latest on storm team 4 radar. not tracking any rain in our immediate area. good news for the folks coming back home. this rain is going to be pushing back into the area during the day tomorrow. here's future weather at 6:00 a.m. we're still dry. for the early morning commute, you're going to be fine. 10:00 a.m., rain pushing into an fredericksburg and shcharlotte charlottesville. everybody dealing with showers in the afternoon. could slow the evening commute. rain doesn't come to an end monday night. it continues. coming up in my full forecast, i'll let you know when rain exits our area. >> thanks. your washington redskins are tied for first place in the division. can you believe it? carol joins us from fedex field with the big win over the giants.

thanksgiving to try to drive home. take a look here. we're at the rest stop in the woodbridge area of northern virginia. looking at the taillights. those are folks heading south from this area. very slow going. let's take a look at a traffic camera in 95. north and southbound lanes, you're seeing major delays, as you said, from springfield all the way down to richmond. no one is getting home any time soon. i spoke to one woman who was driving from philadelphia to charlotte, north carolina. she says it's going to take her an extra two hours to get home. >> pretty much consistently crawling. whereas, when we were in, like, the delaware/baltimore area, it was stop and go. it's been consistently slow here. >> that's a great way to put it. consistently slow or crawling. you know, you see some drivers going by at a pretty good speed, but then all of a sudden, you

have a stop. major delays here. also major delays for people taking the harry nice bridge, trying to get away from the 95 traffic. back to you. >> after a nice weekend with family, this means you are back in dc. thanks, darcy. tomorrow, the man police say killed three people at a planned parenthood clinic will have his first court appearance. there's still questions and speculation about the motive behind the shooting in colorado springs. today, police released a statement saying they're sealing the warrants against shooting suspect robert lewis dear. a police officer and two civilians were killed in the attack. the community is remembering officer garrett swasey. >> his wife is so proud of her husband, yeah. she knew -- she knew what he loved to do. she knew the risks. >> swasey's widow released a statement today saying her husband's last act was for the

safety and well-being of others. planned parenthood says the gunman was motivated by his anti-abortion beliefs. a group of activists gathered outside the white house today. they're rallying for action on climate change. this was one of thousands of events happening worldwide. the rallies were planned ahead of tomorrow's historic united nations climate change summit in paris. that city will host nearly 150 world leaders, as they try to reach a universal deal to reduce global warming. today, climate change protesters in paris clashed with police. many were arrested, as large demonstrations are banned following the terror attacks. update now to the murder of a woodbridge high school student. news 4 learned the suspect smalls is expected to forego a trial scheduled for monday. he's expected to plead guilty to first degree murder. wilson is accused of killing 16-year-old willson last

november. the attorney says prosecutors will ask for no less than 50 years. smalls attorney is expected to ask for a lesser term. four others, including smalls sister, are also charged in connection with will sson's dea. crime concerns in the district is a major issue. we're going to reveal the chief's public plea to help reduce the violence. widespread partisanship is making it hard for political leaders to get things done. governor larry hogan

disagree without being disagreeable. maryland governor larry hogan tells the "new york times" it's his mantra. the times called to hogan, who announced he was cancer free earlier this month. hogan is enjoying a popularity surge as a republican in a democratic state. 62% of voters approve of the job hogan is doing. that includes 54% of democrats. hogan believes he is successful because he doesn't make politics personal. something he says not enough politicians do these days. dc police chief says it's her job to make sure people feel safe, and she is doing everything she can to make it happen. the chief wrote an op-ed in the "washington post." did you see this? she says violent crime is the lowest since 2007, but called

the number of homicides this year, quote, unacceptable. the chief says police are doing what they can by increasing patrol, but added the criminal justice system needs to keep repeat offenders off the streets. she also called for community support, saying in part, the best way to prevent crimes is to create opportunity and provide services. the mayor and her team are focusing on delivering services to those in need. more rain and cool temperatures to start the week. we'll show you just how chilly it's going to get, as we get closer and closer to december. >> it's the big get-back after the big get away. po

>> announcer: you're watching news 4 at 6:00. a number of people opted to fly for the holidays. i want to show you a live look at reagan national airport right now. most airports across the country are seeing delays just 15 minutes or less. both reagan national, and dallas saw short delays. while traveling by plane, train or automobile, most folks left early, hoping to avoid the rush. we look at whether the early

start really worked out for them. >> reporter: more than 40 million people took to the highways for thanksgiving, leaving the day before the holiday is sometimes a good day to avoid traffic. this traveler was going from florida to jersey. >> i've never done a trip this long. it was an experience. >> reporter: he left on tuesday to avoid the rush. >> coming down was bad. coming back to far, i have another three and a half hours, not so bad. >> reporter: like wise, this traveler was going to new york to north carolina and got an early start on the return leg. setting out before dawn to take the pressure off. >> left at 4:00 this morning. taking it easy coming down. >> reporter: not everybody took it easy. as these pennsylvania-bound return travelers found out. >> one bad wreck was at cold pepper. five or six cars went everywhere. we managed to squeak through. >> reporter: for amtrak, this is the busy season. they saw record numbers last year. this year, they're expecting more. >> all the major hubs across the

country. >> reporter: crowds had started to form at reagan national airport. early on, delays from adverse weather elsewhere in the country hadn't rippled here yet. >> we started at philadelphia, drove here, dropped my daughter off at the airport, going down to tu tuscaloosa. >> reporter: here at the airport, they're talking about the low cost of ground travel. the lowest fuel prices mean this family can fly and drive, on the low gas prices. >> under $2.00. >> reporter: it was called one of the busiest travel seasons in some time. a soggy night tonight may make a soggy start for your work week. amelia? >> it's going to be a dry start. showers move back into the afternoon hours tomorrow. you'll be dealing with showers for the evening commute. tonight, patchy drizzle.

for the most part, we'll take a break from the rain. patchy fog out there. we continue to track showers on tuesday and rain on wednesday. to begin the week, you'll need the small umbrella monday and tuesday. by wednesday, tracking some moderate rain. no flooding is in the forecast. it's kind of nuisance weather. locate the rain boots for tomorrow and keep them handy through wednesday. as we look ahead to the weekend, really nice weather in the forecast. good timing there. tomorrow, the weather is going to have a moderate impact on your day. dealing with showers especially later in the day. chilly temperatures. we don't make it out of the 40s tomorrow. currently, we are in the 40s. 48 degrees in washington. lows tonight dip to around 40. that's where we'll start tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m. again, it's dry for the morning commute. by noon, tracking showers south of the area in parts of southern maryland, around the northern neck. temperature of 44. not only do you need the rain jacket, but maybe a warmer layer underneath it, as well. by 3:0 p.0 p.m., dealing with

showers in washington, spreading north. temperature, 45 by 6:00 p.m. still tracking showers. that could slow the evening commute. on tuesday, it's another wet day. high temperature of 53 degrees. at the bus stop, showers are possible for the kids with temperatures in the 40s. recess potentially indoors, unfortunately, on tuesday. dismissal showers are likely. no could impact the afterschool activities. here's future weather on tuesday. i don't want you to pay attention so much to timing, but notice how throughout the day, we're dealing with waves of rain light in nigh tuature. if not rain, we're keeping the clouds around. into tuesday night, maybe a bit of a break from the rain. another round moves back in on wednesday. this is when the rain could be a little heavier in nature. could maybe reduce visibility. what i'm keeping a close eye on is the timing. most computer models have a rainy day from start to finish. however, there is a minority that only has rain around during

the morning. right now, my forecast is rain from start to finish on wednesday and a moderate rain at times. temperatures not too bad. look at that. high on wednesday of 58. we dry out on thursday but trade drier weather for cooler temperatures. high on thursday of 52. it'll be breezy and mostly sunday. friday, saturday and sunday, beautiful sunshine. temperatures start to warm. for the coming weekend, looking like a great weekend to get the christmas tree or hang the holiday lights, erica. >> thank you, amelia. coming up, the redskins are giants as they move into first place. we'll have the reaction from the excited locker room.

besides the two undefeated teams, carolina and new england, no other squad had a better

record at home than the redskins. first place in the nfc east. despite the injuries and question marks surrounding the squad, as of right now, the redskins are a playoff football team. the skins called a players only team metet meeting last night. whatever was said worked. first quarter, kirk cousins going for it all. 63 yard touchdown strike. they jump out to a 10-0 lead. second quarter, offense still on the move. cousins, little play action. to the rookie matt jones. he has some space. 45 yard gain on this screen pass. the redskins with a few big plays today, and it paid off. later in the drive, on a fourth and goal, jay gruden deciding to go for it. cousins is going to call his own number here at the goal line. this one was revealed and upheld. the skins are up, 17-0. in the third, the defense

getting it done. the giants in the red zone, eli manning picked off for the third time today. that time by dunbar. the giants remain scoreless. new york, they get on the board in the fourth quarter and going for more. manning dropping back, going for his playmaker. odell jbeckham jr. with a sick one-handed grab. how about that? giants pull within six. last chance for the g-men. seven seconds in the game. hoping for a fedex field miracle. a few laterals. this one would end in the redskins' favor. how about this, they are on top of the nfc east division. the skins take this game. your final score, 20-14. out at fedex field right now is carol maloney. it's been a long time since the skins were in first place in the nfc east division. how was the locker room following this great win today? >> jason, not surprising, they were down playing being in first

place. everybody across the board, they had five games left, so much can happen. three of the games left are against division opponents. there is no hiding the joy in their faces as they were able to finally beat the rival giants. they'd lost five straight to them. now, they head into december, the final month of the regular season, with so much at stake. >> it was emotional for me. i broke down like a baby. just finally able to come together as a team and get a win that really counts. for the fans, man, they've been up and down with us this season. man, i'm happy we were able to go out and get a win for those guys. >> we wanted to go out and put four quarters together like we did today. this is what we expect. we expect to be a great team. we have to keep going out each sunday or monday and do what we have to do and win games. >> we're in the driver's seat. we have the keys to the car. don't nobody have to help us. we don't need a team to lose or win. it's in our hands. we can't fault anybody but

fedex field. we're going to move on to baseball. for the first time in his career, jordan zimmerman will not wear a nationals uniform this upcoming season. the free agent pitcher is heading to detroit on a monster deal, $110 million over the course of five years. zimmerman spent his entire career in the nationals organization. pitched memorable games during his time at the nation's capital. threw the first no-hitter in nats franchise history. he heads to detroit, a team in need of starting pitcher. they traded price and lost scherzer last season. the royal family released adorable new photos of princess charlotte. one picture shows the little princess with a cuddly toy dog. her mom, the duchess of cambridge, took these pictures at their country home in eastern england. charlotte is now six months old. we've got a whole gallery of pictures of the royal family. you can go to the nbc washington
