>> we believe the suspects when they entered fired somewhere between 65 and 75 rounds. >> the killers' failed attempt to slaughter more victims. >> i look in the mirror and see myself bloodied. >> and the renewed battle over gun control. >> this is a problem because mentally ill people are getting guns and committing mass atrocities. >> news 4 at 4:00 starts now. pipe bombs, thousands of bullets. a couple ready for war. startling new details emerging about the husband and wife who turneded a holiday party in southern california into a savage bloodbath. >> authorities now tell nbc news the duo may have had jihad i connections. news 4 has team coverage and we start with meagan fitzgerald. >> we want to give you the names of the two people who nbc news has just confirmed were killed in that attack. they are 47-year-old michael s weslow, a father of six.

and 52-year-old nicholas fallacino, another health inspector. sources are telling nbc news that syed farook had been radicalized and he was in touch with people in the l.a. area that expressed jihadist views. farook was talking with people overseas who were persons of interest to u.s. intelligence and they're looking for possible accomplices. two handguns and two assault rifles which were found in the suv farook and his wife were driving, but we are told his rifle was bought by farook. these suspects were heavily armed. we're talking more than 1500 rounds of ammunition in the car and more than 2,000 rounds at farook's home. there were also more than a dozen pipe bombs and the bomb at the scene of the attack was rigged with a remote detonator, but it was never triggered. >> clearly, they were equipped and they could have continued to do another attack. we intercepted them before that

happened, obviously. there appears to be a degree of planning that went into this. nobody just gets upset at a party and goes home and puts together that kind of an elaborate scheme to do that. so there was some planning that went into this. >> democrats are forcing a vote this afternoon on tougher background checks and increased funding for mental health treatment and there are amendments to repeal the health care law and all of those amendments are expected to fail. back to you. >> right now federal authorities are still looking for a motive here. meantime, here's what we know about the victims. 14 people were killed and 21 others injureded. at least two police officers were hurt, but they're expected to be okay. police say some of the families are still waiting to hear about their loved ones. the san bernardino county sheriff's department says it expects to release the names and photos of the victims soon once they finished notifying the families. in some ways the couple suspected in the slaughter seemed to be living a normal life. they hadda i baby registry for

their daughter who is now 6 months old. it listed four items including pampers, syed farook's profile is also on a dating website. it says he was born and raised in the u.s. and tries to live a good, muslim life, likes snowboarding, dining out with friends and camping and working on cars. he was looking for a woman who shares those interests and wears a hijab. >> the san bernardino tragedy has quickly turned political. the cover of today's "new york daily news" reflects its advocacy of gun control laws and gun control advocates quickly turned the thoughts and prayers hash tag into a tirade about america's gun laws. terry tanbaker of milwaukee-based proponent of gun control. congress was elected to act not to pray. no more congressional thoughts and prayers. but emma green is the managing editor of atlantic magazine. she noted that shaming people

for prayer is not productive. most of the presidential candidates tweeted their thoughts and prayers today. more on the impact of the massacre on the campaign coming up a little later. i'm mark segraves in bethesda, maryland, where dozens of faith leaders gathered today demanding action from congress in the wake of the mass shooting in california. 70 faith leaders from multiple different religions shined on to a letter sent to congress demanding immediate action on gun control. they stood on the steps of this church today saying enough is enough. >> we need politicians on the right and the left because this is about life over death. this is about dignity and respect. this is about people being able to leave in the morning and have a reasonable expectation of coming home at night. >> the nation's top republican thinks congress needs to do more to stop the number of mass shootings in this country. house speaker paul ryan said today that while it's too early to determine a motive in this particular case, mental illness

welcome back. let's take a look at conditions the other computer system. yes. today, finally some sunshine back across our area. sunshine after five days of clouds and rain and drizzle. the sun came back, but it came back with a lot of wind across our area especially the early part of the day and we're starting to see the winds calm down a bit right now. you're seeing gusts between 15

and 20 miles per hour and you can see up to 21 in gaithersburg and 25 mile per hur gusts around easton, but the wind has been coming down some throughout the afternoon and it will be for the evening hours. windy conditions today and your evening here will be breezy throughout the day tomorrow, i think, so a bit of wind left hanging on. so we may be a little chilled in the morning tomorrow, friday morning rush. yes, but it's not going to be quite the bit of a biting wind as what we had this morning. so today our temperatures with that wind feeling more like we're in the low 40s by the time we get to friday with less wind and our temperatures getting into the low 50s i think we'll feel more like 50 degrees. yes, the sunshine will be back and at least it will be another nice day for us tomorrow and even as we move forward, some pretty good days ahead as far as going out this evening. it will be a little on the breezy side still as i mentioned and cool so you're going to need your coats and our temperatures will be falling through the 40s

and by early tomorrow morning there will be a spread of 30s across the area. so, yes, winter is here and your december will feel not quite like december and we'll still have a couple of days and we'll make it above average, but we're back to the chill. no more 60s coming our way and your walking the dog forecast and temperature 45 degrees at 7:00, and looking at a clear sky there with chilly conditions for the evening coming up. meanwhile, first thing tomorrow morning and the spread 30 to 39 degrees and a cool start for us and still wind and you'll have to grab that coat. and here's a look at some headlines and clouds will come back this weekend. right now what we're tracking in our weather system here are just some high clouds late in the day. we're not expecting any rain this weekend.

this is what you get. you get traffic backed up. this intersection is never normally good anyway, but you start closing down roads around here and it gets really bad. it's a good thing the traffic control officers came out. everybody was blocking the box and nobody was able to get back through and they have a restored calm right now. >> the road closures started at 2:00 this afternoon and they'll last until 9:00 tonight so we have hours, hours more to go with the road closures in place and be prepared and the tree gets lit at 9:00 tonight and give yourself extra patience if you're coming through downtown d.c. right now. back to you guys. >> thanks, adam. climate change is not just an environmental or political issue. many doctors say it's also a health issue. in news for your health, perhaps some changes in the climate can affect our bodies.

dr. jackie from gaithersburg is here to explain. dr. jackie, you say a warming planet should be a concern for anybody with heart trouble or is at risk of heart trouble. >> they've been reporting about the smog and the problem with the smog is it puts a strain so if you have high blood pressure and it's a difficulty. if you also get around heat it affects all of your electrical systems and of course, that's the heart and it makes the risk of a heart attack. >> when it comes to the air we know bad air is bad for your lung, but so is warmer air. what's the correlation there? >> the problem is pollution's bad, but when the pollution gets heated up, the o zone is even more sensitive to your lungs and also when you get that raise in temperature you also get thunderstorms and thunderstorms are a particular cause for asthma attacks and we've seen more people with severe weather than at any other time. >> i have pretty badal lerjys and what's the correlation between pollen and pollution.

this is well studied and well followed and we do have longer growing seasons and it's not just your imagination and it is worse because we have a longer growing season. and what about the pollution in our homes. most of us don't think of our houses as being polluted, but they are and we can fix that. >> yes, we can fix that. our houses are polluted because of things like cleaning supply and be wary of the aerosols and also think about how we contribute. so every time you change that light bulb and you make it into something that's lower energy, you really may be helping you not have a heart attack because we're not using up as much fossil fuel. extreme weather, vent event alol make it bad winter and we may end up with flooding and the flooding will cause mold. the mold will help us have toxins in the home and pesticides are a big one that are around the home. realize that with this climate change we've had worsening any

we want to get you caught up now on the latest development in san bernardino right now. police today say that as bad as the attackses were yesterday, they could have been worse. >> now we're learning the shooters had massive amounts of weapons with them and in their home. 14 people were killed, 21 others injured during the massacre at that holiday party. >> nbc's gina kim has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: after spending all night and morning searching the suspects' home and suv, the san bernardino police chief said the husband and wife team of syed rizwan farook and tashfeen malik

was prepared for major carnage. >> clearly, they were equipped and could have continued doing another attack. we intercepted them before that happened, obviously. >> reporter: on their bodies and in their car they had 1600 rounds of ammunition. in their home they had thousands more, along with at least 12 pipe bombs and the tools to make ieds, improvised explosive devices. they attempted to use one of those pipe bombs during the attack at the inland regional center, but it didn't work. >> if you look at the obvious amount of pre-planning that went in, the armaments that he had and the weapons and ammunition, was there obviously a mission here. >> reporter: the assailants targeteded a holiday christmas party for farook's co-workers. witnesses say he had attended the party, left and came back with his wife to unleash the attack. >> we do not know why. we don't know if this was the intended target or if there was something that triggered him to do this immediately. we just don't know. >> reporter: law enforcement sources say farook, a u.s.-born

citizen met malik online and both entered the u.s. in july. malik was here on a visa. they got married and have a 6-month-old child they leave behind. farook was in touch with others in the l.a. area who had expressed jihadist views and appears to have been radicalized. officials are not commenting on a motive and the president says this is now an fbi investigation. >> it is possible that this was terrorist-related, but we don't know. >> reporter: it's the start of a long investigation as the community of san bernardino faces an even longer road of recovery. >> reporter: all of this comes amid some surprising new members from the fbi out tonight. the agency reports there were 160 active shooter incidents between 2000 and 2013. of those, all, but two involved single shooter. only six of the shooters were women and nine instances the shooter killed a family member

first and then moved on to a public location. nearly half of the shooters committed suicide. five shooters from four attacks are still on the loose. a new poll says most americans homegrown jihadists are a greater threat to the u.s. and not terrorists hiding among syrian refugees. quinnipiac university released the study today and the survey, rather, 83% of american voters believe a major terrorist attack in this country is very likely or somewhat likely to happen soon. 58% say homegrown jihadists are more likely to commit an act of terror than someone coming from syria. >> responses on the issue of accepting refugees were split among party lines. 68% of those polled would accept syrian refugees. >> comedian jon stewart back on capitol hill to lob per 9/11 responders. they're calling on congress to renew health care benefits for emergency workers who became ill after being exposed to toxic materials at the world trade

financial crimes. it's time to focus the agency on what the american people expect it to do, protecting lives. brian moore, nbc news, washington. oscar pistorius is now a convicted murderer. >> today a south african appeals court overturned his manslaughter conviction, charging him with murder. the former olympian now faces a minimum of 15 years in prison for killing his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. nbc's jeff rossum haze look now at what's next. >> he's found guilty of culpable homicide. >> oscar pistorius had been convicted of manslaughter for shooting and killing his model girlfriend reeva steenkamp, but in south africa, the appeals court came out and blasted the original judge saying pistorius should have been convicted of murder from the very beginning and changed the verdict. so now oscar pistorius is officially a convicted murderer and he will now have to be resentenced and the guidelines

for sentence for murder is the very minimum is 15 years in prison. what's confusing is that he's still here at his uncle's luxurious mansion on house arrest, still serving that old sentence and he was released. the pistorius family releasing a statement saying their legal team will now take a look at the ruling and decide where to go from here, but will not comment any further at this time. they could appeal to the constitutional court that's basically south africa's version of the u.s. supreme court, but unclear if that court would even take the case. so now all eyes are on this house. do the police show up here and re-arrest pistorius? does he have to surrender at all? no one knows and we are told his re-sentencing will likely happen in a month or two and pistorius himself could speak making a personal plea for a life sentence. back to you. a vicious attack on a man with cerebral palsy. why two robbers posted video of it on social media.

a northern virginia man under arrest after two dogs were shot and left to die. prince william county police arrested the man charles peele iii. they say he turned himself in this week. in early november someone called an animal jelte tore tell them that his german shepherd and another dog were missing. the owner later found the body

of one dog and called police. animal control officers found the second dog in the woods near lonesome road near oaksville. peele is charged with felony animal cruelty and reckless handling of a firearm. this story's disturbing on so many levels. in michigan, two men are in jail today accused of beating a disabled man and posting a video of the attack on social media. here it is. police say the suspects stole the victim's cell phone from his apartment in pontiac. the victim who has cerebral palsy chased them into the stairwell and that's where they beat him and spit on him. then they posted the video here on the victim's facebook page and their own. the victim is back home today and doing okay, but neighbors fear for their safety. >> i've never seen nothing like that before especially a disabled person. who would do that? that's a coward move right there. >> i think it's disgraceful. >> the suspects are in jail now because they can't post the $25,000 bail.

precious and take precious in. the good news is precious has been reunited with family who lives outside of the county. coming up on news 4 at 5:00, we'll take you to that reunion. a sperm donor may be forced to pay child support, but it's not the couple who is looking for his cash. we'll explain this strange case.

faith leaders in kansas are sending a clear message about the syrian refugee crisis.

the governor -- the group, rather, wants sam brownback to settle in kansas. on wednesday they presented an open letter to the governor asking him to reconsider his stance against refugee settlement. >> brownback is one of several governors around the nation who signed executive orders preventing refugee resettlement. an unusual child support case is playing out in a court in kansas. the state is trying to make a sperm donor responsible for a girl being raised by an estranged lesbian couple. >> i've never spoken to anybody who is a sperm donor that i am expected to be a father to. >> after answering a craigslist ad that he agreed to be a sperm donor for same-sex couple jennifer bower and angie. >> the contract says before anything happened i wasn't going to be a parent. >> he showed up with a bag containing a cup with his donation three times and never

took any money for it. using a basic syringe, bower says she was able to impregnate shriner. >> it was never intended for william to be a parent. jennifer and i created this child not william and jennifer. >> the state of kansas disagrees. it all started after the two women applied for state assistance. in a filing this week, co-counsel timothy check wrote, history has not washed away the longstanding public policy of legitimacy through marriage and none of the parties asserted a marriage occurred between any of the parties. shriner and bower did have a commitment ceremony. >> we couldn't marry at the time. it wou it wasn't legal. >> you would have otherwise? >> absolutely. >> the judge ordered more ada to undergo paternity testing. brownback appointed her to the bench in 2012. he spent tens of thousands of
