who has the rest of that forecast. hey there, tom. >> the sun has been up for an hour and a half but it's still struggling to get above freezing as we did start out in the low to mid-20s around dawn on this saturday morning. it's getting into the low 30s. there's a live view from the storm team 4 tower camera overlooking northwest washington in the fror ground. off in the distance, there's the potomac river valley itself. we have a blue sky with lots of sunshine, storm team 4 radar scanning the sky. don't have rain or snow anywhere. much of the eastern half of the country, no travel problems on this saturday morning, if you'll be driving or flying, temperatures in the low 30s and our nearby suburbs. some of the rural areas still below freezing near the bay. shenandoah valley out in the mountains now, it's still in the 20s to near 30. there's union station. the flag is hardly moving at all, just a little breeze. hour by hour, rest of the day, low 50s by midafternoon, late

tonight back down to the low 40s. a look at this dry pattern, how long it's going to continue and a warming trend, coming right up. >> thank you so much, tom. a possible threat has been cleared from a u.p.s. facility in san bernardino. the bomb squad was called out this morning to look in a suspicious package addressed to the san bernardino shooters. a driver came back to the facility after realizing theç package was meant for syed farook and tashfeen malik. investigators found out the delivery came from a reputable vendor and was not a threat. police said only clothes were inside. minutes into the attack at the inland regional center, tashfeen malik praised support for an isis leader on facebook. >> a facebook executive said she posted under an alias an cot around when the first 9/11 call was coming in. facebook found the account on thursday. they took it down and gave all the info to police. the fbi has officially declared

the attack a terror investigation. investigators do not believe the two had any direct ties to isis or any other terrorist network. malik was born in stack stan and lived in saudi arabia before moving back to pakistan for pharmacy school. she met syed farook online. got married in mecca. malik arrived in the u.s. last year. farook's sister says she hardly knew her sister-in-law. >> you met her, she's the girl next door, the sweet, innocent kind. the kind that's smiling, that's nice to you. you would never ever guess. >> others say malik was a soft spoken housewife, a woman who wore a veil in public, avoided neighbors and refused to drive. >> with the recent mass shootings in colorado and california, we've seen

heightened security across the country. jackie bensen shows us the state of the alert around the district. >> reporter: around the center, more security than normal. news that the fbi believes terrorism was the motive for the tragedy in san bernardino, california has resulted in heightened security in the nation's capital. it may be regular people, citizens who offer the best defense to an attack here. >> when we look back over our cases over the last 10, 15 years, in almost every case, we find that somebody saw something, whether it was a ç family member, a friend or co-worker and didn't say something to law enforcement. >> reporter: at the museum on pennsylvania avenue near the u.s. capital, headlines from around the country read, was it terrorism? radicalized? possible extremism? these two off-duty service members walked around taking it all in. >> you're never going to be able to prepare for the attack. it's going to happen. it's going to happen to people that don't deserve it. >> there's so many great things here, so many important people here.

alexandria. an autopsy will determine the cause and manner of death. the city has only had four homicides this year. it's the second time in a month a murder victim has been found in a park. you hear some folks in the crowd there booing gop front-runner donald trump. he was interrupted ten times at a campaign rally in north carolina last night. each time the protesters signs were taken, they were removed. in his speech, trump took jabs at hillary clinton, barack obama and fellow gop candidate jeb bush even pretending to fall asleep because of bush's, "e=q low energy.hr(t&háhp &hc% if you think you're seeing lou grant in manassas this morning, you're not seeing

you're watching news 4 today. check this out. this is the kind of pilot you'd want to have if your plane had to make an emergency landing. give this guy a raise. the small plane was having problems with its landing gear, so the pilot made a belly landing in palm springs, california. sparks flew as the plane hit the runway. the fire department was there ready to spray the jet down. the passenger and pilot got out safe and unharmed. >> incredible video there.

it seems the chipotle e. coli scare reached our area. the most recent person to get sick lives in central maryland. that person is one of nine new cases since the initial outbreak all the way out west in washington state. chipotle says it will impose stricter rules for food safety including testing all produce in smaller batches and enhancing training for the handling of food. investigators still don't know which ingredient triggered the outbreak. chipotle says it's unlikely that ingredient is still in the food supply. a new report is raising concerns about drunk driving in the district. a foundation for advancing alcohol responsibility found 62% of d.c. residents don't know the legal limit is 0.08%. 31% of people nationwide only use the number of drinks they've had to determine if it's too much. just 30% of d.c. residents admit to taking a safe ride home after drinking. the survey found two-thirds of millennials say they've intervened and stopped someone

you're watching news 4 today. white's ferry is open this morning after a bit of a scare. yesterday, a broken underwater cable pushed it a few yards downstream. chopper 4 was over the scene in dickerson when it happened. no one was hurt but a tugboat came in to bring the ferry back to shore. there were about a dozen cars on board at the time. new questions over a missing and conflicting evidence in a deadly police shooting. squad car video shows mcdonald veering away from officers before he was shot 16 times. officer jason van dyke is charged with murder. police are also looking into 86 minutes of missing surveillance video from a nearby burger king that include the moments the teen was shot.

happening today, planned parenthood supporters and allies in the district are holding a national day of solidarity. and this all comes after the tragedy in san bernardino, california and last week's horrific shooting at a planned parenthood facility in colorado. the ceremony is happening at all soul's church on harvard street in northwest d.c. the doors will open at 9:30 this morning.ç molette, whenever there's a mass shooting, gun sales tend to go up. this weekend, a big gun show is manassas is renewing calls for changes in gun laws. >> every shooting is somebody's child, somebody's parent, somebody's brother, somebody's friend. we can't become numb to it. >> a mom herself, martina lyons has spent most of her adult life volunteering to prevent gun violence. her solution -- >> we need to change our gun laws, making it much more difficult for dangerous people to get their hands on dangerous weapons. >> reporter: she worries gun

shows like the one planned in manassas, which is expected to offer some 175 tables of weapons for sale, could put the firearms into the wrong hands. this is one from years past. >> when you took about gun show loophole, what you mean is these big, gaping holes where only people who are purchasing weapons from federally licensed firearm dealers have to go through a background check. if you buy from a private seller, online or at a gun show, you don't have to have a background check. >> reporter: virginia's governor blaming other leaders for lack of action. >> you're in virginia. as long as we have this gun show loophole where any individual, maybe with mental illness, maybe a felon, domestic abuse or stalker can go to any one of these gun shows and purchase a weapon with no background checks, it needs to stop. >> reporter: around guns his whole life, greg stone says gun control is not the answer. >> the first reaction is for more gun control, which is counterproductive. the reaction should be towards mental health. if it's a terrorist attack, the

great day for recreation and exercise. we'll make it into the upper 50s tomorrow afternoon and again on monday afternoon. more clouds around on monday. slight chance of a sprinkle as an upper level disturbance comes on by. tuesday, upper 30s in the morning, sunshine, afternoon highs, mid-50s. this generally dry pattern continues. seven-day outlook all the way into the coming week. temperatures in the 50s on wednesday, thursday, on friday it may jump into the low 60s. here's a peek at next weekend's outlook next saturday may hold steady in the low 60s during the afternoon, 50s in the rural areas. our next chance of any significant rain may come a week from tomorrow. next sunday, after tomorrow, it will be a week later, maybe some showers coming through with highs in the 50s. that's the way it looks. >> tom, you mentioned this is good weather to put up the holiday lights. well, a warning before you put them up at your place, how some displays are already causing problems for pilots in the air.

you're watching news 4 today. many of you are getting ready to deck the halls for the holidays. you might be surprised to learn a popular new outdoor decoration might cause some unexpected problems. news 4's jackie bensen tells us if used incorrectly, they can create the same problem as shining a laser pointer right at the cockpit of a plane. >> introducing star shower laser lights. >> the most popular version is as the as seen on tv star shower but they are all essentially lower wattage home versions of a rock concert laser light show. the laser part is the potential problem. the manufacturer's instruction manual notes, if your intended surface is within ten nautical miles of an airport, lower the

laser of the star shower so nothing points into the sky. here's a view from the sky to nbc 4 viewers. >> with a news helicopter, i've been hit with a red laser in manassas. red is better than green. it was a nuisance, distracting. but it was good weather conditions, we were up high. i pedal turned the helicopter away. i put my back to whoever it wasç it was over with. >> reporter: ratliff says pilots are acutely aware of the dangers of being distracted by a laser light. >> the two crucial phases of flight, takeoff an landing. you're near the ground, more things are happening, not less things. that's the worst time to get hit by a laser. >> reporter: just two weeks ago in sacramento, a coast guard pilot reported being distracted by a laser light that turned out to be star shower christmas lights. the homeowner was unaware the lights were causing a problem. there have been no incidents of anyone deliberately using the

laser christmas lights to cause trouble. a reminder, that can cost you an $11,000 fine. jackie bensen, news 4. >> there's a new warning from the faa about the holiday light machines. we don't know if star shower was used in this case. the faa reports an american airlines flight just outside of dlaz was hit by a laser from a holiday light machine on thursday night. a police helicopter traced the source to a property that had one of the beams shooting into the sky. as you heard jackie mention there, violators could face a hefty fine and maybe even jail time. 8:56. new details. police make a second arrest after a maryland police officer is shot in the face. plus, what investigators found that they were looking for. and tom kierein has our forecast. the two words he's using to describe it. and a list of rules for a holiday party could cost a university chancellor his job.

during the attack at the inland regional center, tashfeen malik phrase e praised support isis leader on facebook. the fbi officially declared the attack a terror investigation. a woman died in this massive house fire in southeast d.c. there blaze broke out just before 3:00 this morning on 5th street. no word yet on what started that fire. we're working to find out the name of the man killed in a fire in prince george's county. a camping trailer went up in flames in clinton. the man's body was found inside the trailer once crews got the fire out. investigators are still looking into how it all started. as soon as we get updates, we'll have it on the nbc washington app. time now for a check on your forecast. we had a frosty start. >> a cold o
