makes controversial comments about muslims. the fbi is trying to figure out if one of the shooters had direct ties to extremists. and president obama is preparing to give a major address to the nation. liberty's president is issuing a call to arms. he wants his students to carry concealed weapons and as darcy spencer shows us tonight, some kids on another campus don't think that's a bad idea. >> that's right. some students say they agree at least with the idea of having students be able to carry guns in case there is an attack on campus. but others say it's a bad idea that more guns are not the answer. we went to george mason university in fairfax county to get student reaction to jerry falwell jr.'s comments that students should arm themselves to protect against a potential attack like the one in san bernardino. >> i like the idea that everyone should be able to protect

themselves. i just don't think in reality it would work out as well as people would like it to. >> i don't think it's a good idea. i think part of the reason why shootings like these happen is we don't know who these guns go in the hands of. >> reporter: falwell is president of liberty university, speaking at convocation friday he made controversial comments about muslims, criticized president obama for wanting more gun control and called for students to get permits to carry guns on the private university campus. >> i just wanted to take this opportunity to encourage all of you to get your permit. we offer a free course and let's teach them a lesson if they ever show up here. >> reporter: some mason students who support the idea of carrying guns on campus say there should also be strict rules and screening for those who want them. >> i also think it's a great idea to allow the students to have their own ways of protecting themselves and not have to rely on the time it

takes for anyone to come and help because when a situation breaks out, it's kind of difficult to just sit around and wait it out. >> reporter: others say introducing more guns and not really knowing who is carrying them won't make them feel safer. >> it's just not safe. you don't know who's carrying a gun and what they're thinking. >> the virginia governor called falwell's remarks rash and repugnant. falwell stood behind his comments. tonight, isis is praising the attack out in california and the husband and wife that carried it out. this as president obama prepares to address the nation tomorrow from the white house. nbc's jay gray is in san bernardino tonight. >> reporter: as a memorial grows outside the inland regional center, so does the terror investigation in san bernardino. early saturday, federal agents raided this home where a friend

of syed rizwan farook lives. he apparently purchased the two assault rifles used in the attack. authorities say he's not a suspect in the mass shooting but they want to know when and why the weapons were transferred to farook and his wife, tashfeen malik. >> it's an urban tactical weapon that these individuals used in a capacity for a terrorist attack. >> reporter: isis stopped short of claiming responsibility for the deadly attack. >> we know that isil and other terrorist groups are actively encouraging people around the world and in our country to commit terrible acts of violence, oftentimes as lone wolf actors. >> reporter: president obama continues to get daily briefings on the investigation and sunday for only third time in his presidency, he'll address the nation from the oval office. the white house says he'll discuss the situation in california and the broader threat of terrorism, how it's evolved and how the u.s. will defeat it. jay gray, nbc news, san bernardino.

>> the white house says the president will also discuss how his administration plans to keep the american people safe. you will see the speech at 8:00 tomorrow night on nbc 4 right before sunday night football. right now i'm tracking some areas of fog across the area, mainly around annapolis and frederick. we'll continue to see patchy fog develop overnight. where it does form, it could be dense in nature. keep that in mind if you're out and about early tomorrow morning. fog burns off around 8:00 or 9:00. it's a cold start, 6:00 a.m., 20s and 30s in the suburbs. about 36 in the district. by 10:00 a.m., we're at 43 degrees. another comfortable afternoon. i'll let you know how warm it will be in my full forecast.

new details about that shooting and standoff at a motorcycle shop outside of milwaukee today. one person has died. police say he walked out holding a weapon and refused to comply with officers ordering him to put it down. that is when officers opened fire. police say he may have also been shot at from inside the bike shop. they're still sorting through what exactly happened. one officer was shot at. but his helmet deflected the bullet. police have another suspect in custody. a man is in police custody in fairfax county tonight charged in a shooting in alexandria last month that killed one person and injured two others. police say they got andre wilkins thanks to an anonymous tip called in. for dozens of years, the alexandria parade of lights has been going strong. but this year's event took on added significance.

and the washington humane society came to the rescue of a man who feared he would never see his beloved dog ever again. that's next. news reporters: it's a fish, but it's been changed. genetically altered by scientists. critics call the process creepy, and label it frankenfish. narrator: genetically engineered salmon was just approved by the fda - no labels required. disturbing, right? get this. if your state wants to label gmos, congress is trying a year-end sneak attack to block your right to label. call congress. demand clear labels, not high tech gimmicks. don't let them overturn state gmo labeling. protect our right to know.

between the man and police were captured on the video. one officer tased him. another one shot him. as a matter of policy, a separate police agency will review the incident. and a tale of two stories that has left the city of chicago divided. new tonight, the police officers who watched one of their own shoot a teenager 16 times, killing him, filed reports depicting a much different version of the events captured on dashcam footage. the video shows laquon mcdonald walking away from officers. but police reports describe mcdonald as approaching them with a knife. the justice department is now investigating the officers who made those statements. officer jason van dyke is charged with first-degree murder. tragedy in prince george's county. a man killed after his camping trailer went up in flames. this was the scene earlier this

morning in clinton, maryland. firefighters say when they got there, the trailer was burning out of control. police and fire investigators right now are trying to figure out what happened. a d.c. family is without their mother tonight after a terrible fire at her home. it happened early this morning on fifth street in southeast near alabama and martin luther king jr. avenue. when firefighters got there, the woman was rushed to the hospital but she just didn't make it. fire investigators are still trying to figure out how that fire started. have you ever parked your car, just ran into a store quickly to pick something out, came out to see your car on the back of a tow truck? that's called predatory towing, it's a huge problem in the d.c. metro area but it's about to be a thing of the past. president obama signed a new federal law this week giving states and local governments the power to regulate towing companies.

a similar law went into effect in montgomery county on monday. the new federal law ban people watching and waiting for you to park illegally and adds new requirements for parking lot owners who want to have cars towed, including photo evidence. a holiday miracle for a man whose dog was stolen from him in miami over two years ago. the washington humane society found the shih tzu this week, severely neglected, locked up in a crate next to a dumpster here in d.c. his microchip is what led the humane society to his owner, jason brandon, huge smile on his face, says he didn't think he would ever see polo again. he drove down from new york city where he now lives to take polo home.
