many of you have been talking about the hand grenade that someone took to a d.c. police station. we're live with whether the explosive ever posed a major threat. a home in our area catches fire. why neighbors say the house was a big problem long before the flames broke out. and in exactly two hours in a rare prime time address, president obama will tell us exactly how he plans to defeat isis and keep the american people safe. news 4 at 6:00 starts now. >> good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm meagan fitzgerald. we begin tonight in northwest d.c. where a grenade forced roads and businesses to shut down. someone brought that grenade to

the police department at the corner of georgia avenue and a peabody street. officers quickly evacuated nearby businesses including a walmart. news 4's darcy spencer is live at the scene in northwest. >> good evening, meagan. it also prompted the evacuation of the police station any this is it behind me. the fourth district police headquarters in washington had to be temporarily evacuated because of this incident. it's important to note that police have now told us that this was not a live grenade. it did not pose a safety hazard, but at that point they really didn't know what they were dealing with. so these evacuations were ordered out of an abundance of caution. police tell us that someone brought the device, this grenade to the fourth district about 10:30 this morning to turn it over to police. the device, important to note, did not go inside the building and it stayed in the person's car. there is a lot of concern here given what's going on nationally

and internationally. so evacuations were ordered, not just of the police station, but like you said, the mcdonald's down the street and the walmart. i am told the grenade was deemed safe and it was by a military ordinance disposal technician. earlier today i asked police to give me an answer what did someone do if they find something like this inside their home? they say you should not bring it to a police station. you should go ahead and call police and what you have found inside your home and they'll take care of that for you. meagan, back to you. >> darcy spencer reporting for us in the northwest. thank you, darcy. >> now to the latest in the san bernardino shootings. federal investigators are looking into whether tashfeen malik radicalized her husband and if she was the driving force behind the rampage. the pakistani-born malik pledged allegiance to the islamic state on facebook about the same time she and her husband syed farook

carried out the attack. 14 people were killed and 21 others wounded. meanwhile, nbc news has learned that fbi searched the california home of the man they think bought the assault rifles that were used in the attacks. >> americans are split about the biggest worry facing the country right now. a new msnbc telemundo poll says 36% are most worried about a terrorist attack. 31% say they're most concerned about growing gun violence and 17% are concerned about police brutality. in less than two hours, president obama will address the nation on the threat of terrorism and the california shootings. they'll make the speech from the oval office. nbc's brian moore has a look at what we can expect from tonight's prime time address. >> reporter: in the shadow of the paris terror attacks and last week's shooting rampage in california, tonight president obama is delivering a rare oval office address, focusing on the

evolving threat of terror. his last oval office speech was in 2010. >> tonight, i am announcing that the american combat mission in iraq has ended. >> five years later, american special forces are heading back to iraq and into syria to fight isis, a terror army calling for attacks in america. >> we have 70 isis-related arrest, more than one per week, a thousand investigations in all 50 states. i want him to tell the truth to the american people about what the threat nature really is. >> in an msnbc-telemundo-marrist poll say 36% say it's a top worry and 31% say it's gun violence. >> congress should act to make sure no one that is a suspected terrorist can buy guns anywhere in america. >> the democrats call for tighter gun control and republicans want to control the border. >> so we do, as a nation, have the ability and should have the

about 37 in washington and 6:00 a.m. and low to mid-30s, and partly sunny skies. meagan, i'll have your hour by hour temperature forecast for the rest of monday coming up in ten minutes. prince george's county police are looking for this man. his name is christopher crawford and investigators say he killed his friend along oxon hill road and fort washington last night. when police arrived on scene they found tony proctor's body. detectives believe he and crawford got into an argument before the shooting happened. police say crawford lives in laurel. and a virginia police officer is recovering after he was hit by a car last night in loudoun county. the officer was directing traffic near route 50. police say 53-year-old sarah marsh was drunk when she hit the officer. marsh was charged with dui. a helicopter took the officer to nova fairfax hospital and he was treated and released. >> neighbors say a vacant home

that caught on fire in northwest this morning has been a problem for a while. the fire started on the ground floor of the home on 14th street just after 8:00 this morning. investigators are still trying to figure out how the fire started, but sources say squatters may have been using the home to keep warm. residents say they've called the city to voice their concerns. >> i called the city, and i called the police department and i called 311 and i called multiple departments and nobody would even, like, acknowledge my calling and i saw people who were coming and using the back area to do drugs in. >> investigators say nobody was injured in the fire. >> many of you have been wondering how former president jimmy carter has been doing in his fight with brain cancer. well, today he gave us a big update on his condition. son, the holiday season's just like football season...

spring. former president jimmy carter has some good news concerning his fight against cancer. carter says a recent brain scan showed no signs of cancer. that news comes more than three months after he began treatment for four melanoma tumors. back in august, you may remember president carter announced that the melanoma had spread to his brain. doctors removed part of his liver and then they found the brain tumor. here's how he broke the good news to the congregation at his hometown church in plains, georgia, today. >> when i went this week they didn't find any cancer at all. so i have good news. [ applause ] a lot of people prayed for me, and i appreciate that. >> mr. carter will continue to receive regular doses of a new auto immune drug to help his body seek out any cancer cells that may appear in his body. you can go to our nbc washington app to hear president carter talking more about his health

today the congregation at grace community church in arlington decided to make a difference in the lives of thousands of people thousands of miles away. news 4's derek ward explains how they're doing their part to end hunger. >> reporter: it may not look like it, but this is church. it's been said that it's not the building, it's the people. it's the deed. >> so what we told people was instead of coming to hear a sermon at a traditional service, come and be the sermon. >> it's a sermon about feeding the hungry. for many of us these are mostly a side dish, but these simple packets of non-perishables where rice and grains are luxuries. >> most of those meals will go to schools in an area of the world where maybe a parent might not send a child to school because there's so much to do, but because they know that school has a good, nutritious meal, they'll send a child to

school and in addition to getting a meal they'll get an education. >> and folks made this a family affair and these are lessons best taught by parents. >> honhonestly, we get to pass the stuff that we were raised on and taking care of everybody in our community. >> that community includes countries in crisis far from arlington and the food will be boxed and ship to where it's needed most. >> you can't believe how you can do so much. >> they're amazing, 100,000 meals, 1,000 people and what's extended in a little bit of sweat equity pays a lot in humanity. >> when people are hungry desperate things take place. we figure if we can take care of their hunger, a practical need, maybe less of the desperate stuff that's taking place this this world will happen. >> reporter: derek ward, news 4. >> so that weather out there, that was amazing. today it was beautiful and so hopefully, is this going to extend maybe into the week?

>> this is going to continue for the workweek. temperatures running above normal and tracking relatively quiet weather and no rain chances on the seven day and i'm tracking warmer temperatures moving into the area during the end of the workweek. so here are your weather headlines and still comfortable for early december and you will notice more cloud cover than we had this weekend. temperatures in the low to mid-50s for a high and you see the exclamation point for the headline and warmer air arrives on thursday. that's when we would start to notice the next big change in the weather and that will set us up for a mild weekend and maybe you couldn't hang the lights, don't worry. tomorrow the weather is having a low impact on your monday and we will expect that in december. i think you'll be fine with just a light jacket. currently, temperatures are in the 40s for the most part, 46 degrees in washington and there will be patchy fog tomorrow at the bus stop and you want to keep that in mind and at least a warmer jacket with a temperature

of 36 degrees, but by recess we're in the low 50s and dismissal will be nice with the temperature around 55 degrees and that will be our high for the day. with future weather, i'm showing you at 5:00 in the evening and for most of us, whether or not it's impacting the commute at all. there is even as close as warrenton although future weather is keeping you dry and even isolated showers and sprinkles and that's really it. we're seeing more clouds moving in tomorrow evening and if you're headed to the redskins game with the 8:30 kickoff that's a good thing because they won't act as a blanket. 8:00, around 48 degrees and by 10:00 p.m. the temperature at 46 at midnight and keeping it dry for the redskins game and not trying to continue for the remainder of your workweek. on tuesday, mostly sunny. a high of 52 and a mix of clouds and sun and a high of 54. notice the high temperature, 59

degrees and maybe a shower early in the morning on thursday otherwise clouds will give way to increasing sunshine and beautiful for your thursday afternoon and that will set us up for mild temperatures right on into the weekend. a high around 60 and our average high is 48. saturday and sunday, high temperatures actually in the low to mid 60s, and i think if these temperatures go anywhere as chuck comes in and updates the forecast tomorrow morning and i'll be on after football tonight they're going to go up. >> the high temperature is 64 and that mild pattern looks to continue on monday, but showers look to move into the area on monday and cooler air will start to move in next tuesday. >> we're looking at overall a week of spectacular weather for this time of the year. >> sounds great. i'm looking forward to it. >> still ahead, it's time to go bowling. a legend's streak continues while another legend gets to finish his career at home.

game of football. >> jason hatcher, always the man who speaks his mind and he sat down one-on-one with carol maloney and don't miss that tonight on "redskins final." elsewhere in the division, that's a little giant getting ready for the battle of new york. jets versus giants, second quarter, we're knotted up at 10 and doing what odell beckham jr., does and that's make big-time plays and 72-yard touchdown and check out the celebration. the 100-meter hurdle action. ryan fitzpatrick drove the jets 62 yards down the field and the touchdown to brandon marshall and the jets tied the game late and we're headed to overtime in o.t. randy burton on to the 39-yard field goal. it's good and remember, a field goal does not end as the giants get their turn. josh brown testing a 48-yarder here. browns kicked it, off the mark and no good.

the jets win this game 23-20, but tif the redskins win tomorrow night they're four games back in the division. second start of the season for matt schaub and he struggled mightily today. schaub cashed in. w ryan tannehill, and 38-yard touchdown strike and dolphins are up to a 7-0 lead. seconds later. shelby deflecting this pass from schaub and intercepts it and the third pain from the pick six and two touchdowns and 20 seconds and the ravens trying to get back in this one. short pass here and the rookie. how about this? making a few guys miss here and that's the 41-yard touchdown. ravens are down a score. last chance for baltimore and schaub trying to do his best and aaron rogers impression here and

that is 35 yards short of the end zone and miami, they beat baltimore. 15 to 13 and it's the eighth loss this season. the ravens, and redskins take on john fox and this week, chicago hosting the 49ers and it could have won the game and begin to regulation and this went into overtime and in o.t. that's blaine gavert going up to tory smith and falls in the game-winning touchdown and a 71-yard score and the 49ers, they beat the bears by a final score of 26-20 in overtime. we'll move on to college football now. they were played yesterday and the final four is finally set. not many changes to the top four teams and they all took care of business and there was one surprising jump in the final four and the clemson tigers and they won the acc yesterday and alabama, they come in at number

two and the crimson tide, they've only beaten one ranked team this entire season. number three, here's the surprise and michigan state who won the big ten championship, they jumped oklahoma for the third spot. remember, this is not their conference championship game. >> closer to home now, frank beamer's bowl streak continues and 22 straight seasons and virginia tech has gone bowling and the hokeys will play the independence bowl and they will meet on december 26th and that will be the final game. they're staying home, and the midshipman will face the military bowl in annapolis on december 28th and the final college game for reynolds who has the most career rushing touchdowns in fcs history. >> also the wizards, they're in action right now at the verizon center. they are hosting the mavericks and they trail by two right now in the first quarter. all righty. >> busy day of sports and looking forward to monday night. that will be a good one.
