we begin tonight with a murder mystery in spotsylvania county. a woman found dead inside a car outside a man's home. tonight police say it was murder. new details tonight from news4 shomari stone. >> reporter: tonight we have new information. i confirm that heather sessone worked at the red robin restaurant behind me in fredericksburg, virginia. her coworkers tell me that they are grieving, too upset to talk on camera about this tragedy. one man described her as a really nice person. the 21-year-old was found in her car in spotsylvania county sitting in the driver's seat with severe trauma to the upper body. right now investigators tell me they're receiving tips, but they have not identified a person of interest or suspect. someone who lives on piney branch road saw heather's car and called spotsylvania deputies earlier today. tonight detectives tell me this is a homicide investigation. investigators also tell us that

they're talking to her coworkers at red robin and they're looking into who she came in contact with on social media. they're also searching for a possible motive. investigators observe anyone with information about this homicide to give them a call. in fredericksburg, i'm shomari stone, news4. also right now in spotsylvania, 19-year-old katelin akens is missing. akens' family dropped her off at the franconia metro station on saturday. she was headed to reagan national airport to catch a flight. but akens never arrived at her destination, according to her family. today her luggage was discovered in a drainage ditch on river road near fredericksburg. >> just try to help us find her. we want to know if she is face. even if she doesn't want to come home, we just want to know she is safe. >> if you have information call spotsylvania county's sheriff's office. tonight the san bernardino community is holding three more vigils to remember the 14 people killed last week. this candlelight vigil was for county employees who lost their

colleagues in the attack. meanwhile, the person with ties to a san bernardino gun range says sayed farouk took target practice for two to three hours last monday. the fbi says tonight the couple was seen at multiple ranges practicing, and managers at a 21 story building in l.a. say someone looking like farouk tried unsuccessfully to get in to the building the past few weeks. sources say that part of the investigation into the larger plans of farouk and malik, including possible additional attacks. and new controversy tonight from donald trump. the republican presidential front-runner saying the u.s. should stop allowing all muslims into this country until lawmakers, quote, get a handle on what is going on. nbc's brian mooar has reaction now from republicans and democrats. >> reporter: tonight gop presidential candidate donald

former vice president dick cheney who says closing the border to muslims goes against everything we stand for and believe in. on capitol hill, brian mooar, news4. homeland security secretary jeh johnson says tonight the way the government warns people about terror threats needs to change. johnson says his department would unveil a new national alert system in the coming days. right now the department uses a two-tier system with the top tier being an immediate and imminent threat. johnson says the new system will have a middle ground. he also says the intelligence community needs to inform the public better. >> i believe that we need to do a better job of informing the public at large of what we are seeing, removing some of the mystery about the global terrorist threat and what we are doing about it and what we're asking the public to do. >> secretary johnson said the biggest threat to the homeland right now remains domestic terrorism inspired by groups overseas.

metro officers now conducting random bag checks at station entrances. they're looking for possible explosives. they're also more than 20 k-9 teams doing security sweeps around rail stations. metro stepped up the security after the attacks in paris. he has spent four days fighting for his life after being hit by a suspected drunk driver. tonight we're hearing for the first time from a mentor to the officer noah liotta. news4's darcy spencer live outside suburban hospital with what we learn about the officer who was trying to keep drunk drivers off the streets. >> reporter: the officer i interviewed tonight is known here in montgomery county as the dui king. he has taken numerous drunken drivers off the roadways. and this young officer was following in his footsteps. officer john romak took liotta

under his wing. >> he wanted to go out and make a difference. and he also had a deep compassion to treat people with compassion and respect as he did his job. >> reporter: liotta became a full-fledged officer in the department, sharing romack's passion for going after drunk drivers, even volunteering for the dui task force. >> he was excited to do it not in a mean way but to keep everybody safe. >> reporter: he was working on the task force thursday night on rockville pike when he was hit and critically injured by a driver suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and drugs. romack has visited him in the hospital after he fights for his life after suffering a traumatic head injury. >> you don't want it to be any officer. somebody you personally trained, you rode with for a year, you care about deeply, you've been to each other's homes for get together, arties, birthdays, it's shocking. >> reporter: the driver, luis

carjacking suspect. the home of maryland football could soon have a different name. university of maryland president wallace low is asking the board of regents to change the name of byrd stadium. opponents of the name say the former university president h.c. curly byrd had racist and segregationist views. low is recommending it be changed to maryland stadium. the board will take up the issue on friday. if approved, byrd's legacy would be recognized in one of the main libraries. to politics now and the republican shake-up in iowa. ted cruz says he is very encouraged by new poll out that puts him in first place. the monmouth university poll gives cruz a 5-point lead over donald trump and a 7-point lead over senator marco rubio. ben carson led that same poll two months ago, but not all the polls are consistent. new numbers out from cnn have trump leading cruz in iowa by 13 points.

this letter contains the signatures of every d.c. councilmember. and it's addressed to senate majority leader mitch mcconnell. the council's fighting back against senator rand paul's attempt at dismantling the city's strict gun control laws. paul introduced the defend our capital act earlier this month. it would let people carry concealed handguns around the city. councilmembers said the bill disregards safety and accused paul of meddling with a local city law. 'tis the season for christmas lights. holiday parties and congress trying to avert a government shutdown. lawmakers need to pass a long-term spending bill by this friday if they want to keep the government open. this is the first real test for new house speaker paul ryan as he tries to prove he can get things done with democrats and a divided republican caucus in the house. a warm day out there for sure across our region. temperatures today i mean just

lights caused ten deaths last year. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked this deadly apartment fire in frederick county. this blaze broke out on west main street in emmitsburg. one person died. two others have serious injuries. the frederick county fire department tells us three people were trapped in the building. several families in nearby buildings had to be evacuated. no word yet on what caused the fire. parents in montgomery county say tonight they still have questions about radon after high levels of the dangerous gas were found in several county schools. the district says it will retest every floor level room and ever school. they'll also work with the epa to create a new more frequent testing program. the district came under fire because the high radon levels just came to light last week, even though the testing was done years ago. >> i am encouraged that they're going to do the testing of all schools. however, i think there needs to be more done. >> radon is a colorless,

odorless gas. it's been linked to lung cancer. there be some big changes tomorrow in how the safety of your car is measured. transportation secretary anthony fox and the national highway traffic safety administration will announce enhancements to its five-star safety rating system. it could include some new technologies for crash avoidance like emergency braking and collision warnings. right now the rating system is based only on how safe the car is once in a crash. metrorail is taking a beating from customers recently we know. but metrobus is actually getting a good grade. and new gm paul wiedefeld says the bus system needs more attention. over the next ten years, metro will buy about 1200 new buses. they'll replace aging buses. but metro will also need to expand its fleet to meet the demands of a growing number of riders who see the bus as a better alternative to the train.

president franklin roosevelt called it a date which will live in infamy. december 7th, 1941, japan launched a surprise attack on pearl harbor. not long after congress authorized war and the u.s. was part of world war ii. today those who died in that attack were honored at the world war ii memorial here on the national mall. in the crowd was 96-year-old retired lieutenant colonel alfr alfred. he spent a career at the goddard space center. he said americans need to unite now to fight modern threats like they did during the world wars. >> we're all americans, not arab or irish or anything else. as we are today, we've been separated. >> the oldest surviving world war ii vet, 110-year-old frank levingston was also in attendance today. what a proud day for a lot of people there. well, here is doug now with a check on that forecast.

they had a spectacular day out there. and we're in the middle of what, it's beyond a string now. >> you almost call it a heatwave. >> if this was the middle of summer. 10, 15 degrees above average, we would be at 95 to 100 degrees. that's not going to be the case, obviously. but we are talking about temperatures into the mid- to upper 60s as we move into the weekend that is about 15 degrees above average. let's take a look outside right now. still a very mild night. at least in the city. 51 degrees under partly to mostly cloudy skies. we do have some clouds overhead. but not a lot. i'll show you that in just a second. first off, take a look at the numbers. you can see where the clouds are and where they are not. again, the clouds act as a blanket. so where we have clouds, we're in the 40s to around 50. 47 pawtuxent river. 44 fredericksburg. but notice to the north, no clouds around frederick, maryland. only 32 degrees. you can see the clouds coming across here. notice montgomery county clear. for example county clear. the rest of the area has seen some cloud cover during the afternoon, during the evening hours. we'll see most of the clouds get out of here.

by early tomorrow morning, we're talking about a chilly start. but not too bad. a cool start, not too cold. 29 to 37 degrees. temperatures actually a little bit above average early tomorrow morning. and they will stay above average. we've got our storm system. we had two storms coming together right around our region. but they both missed us. one to the east, one down to the south. you can see that one moving into the atlantic. and not another storm you. don't see any more rain back towards the west. a few clouds. but no rain out there. so that impact forecast tomorrow from another nice afternoon will be on the low side. more sun and more mild temperatures right on through the next couple of days. here is that outdoor planner. 38 degrees around 7:00 a.m. that's inside the beltway. rising to about 48 by 11:00. and rising into the 50s by 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00 in the afternoon. so really, as i mentioned, just beautiful. plenty of sunshine all day long. low to mid-50s everywhere. but it does get a lot warmer. and i do mean a lot warmer. 56 on your tuesday. 57 on wednesday. 62 thursday. 64 on friday.

can it get warmer still? yeah, it. 65 degrees coming up on saturday. 67 on sunday. now we're talking about the weekend here. if you've got plans this weekend, it's not going to feel anything like the holidays. that's for sure. extremely warm. a few degrees shy of records. the record high on sunday is 71. so we'll be just shy of that. get out and enjoy it if you can. obviously, doing some things this time of year we normally wouldn't do since it's going to be so nice and warm. monday temperatures come down a bit as a storm system moves our way. temperatures around 61 degrees. and then we will fall. now last december we had two days the entire month at 60 degrees or better. we've got five in a row coming up over the next few days. >> we're living right. >> some people like it. other people, i tell you, on my facebook page, they hate it. they're waiting for snow. it won't come until february, though. >> until february now. all right. sticking to it. thank you, doug. coming up, john wall feeling just fine, leading the wizards against the top team in the
