we're staying on top of the freddie gray case in baltimore. we want to show you officer william porter here walking into court just a little while ago, moving rather quickly away from the camera. these are his attorneys arriving as well. and the prosecution. porter is charged with manslaughter in gray's death. he is the first of six baltimore police officers that will go on trial. we think the prosecution may rest today. so open the nbc washington app to keep up with what's happening in the courtroom today. back to you. >> thank you, kristin. also right now in baltimore, democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders is visiting the city. look at some video. he is in the neighborhood where freddie gray grew up. it is the same place many of the violent protests over gray's death happened. and the site of the freddie gray empowerment center, a new youth center that sanders visited today. funeral also begin this week for those killed in the san

bernardino mass shooting. last night county workers held a candlelight vigil. a health inspector will be laid to rest on friday. services for four other victim also happen over the weekend. 14 people died in last week's shooting. this morning federal investigators want to know how the san bernardino shooting suspects were radicalized. we're learning the county employees had recently undergone active shooter training inside the conference room where the rampage took place. the couple was seen at multiple shooting ranges in the area practicing with rifles. one witness said he saw syed farook a couple days before the shooting at a gun range. i'm molette green live in northeast d.c. in the last 30 minutes, catholic university tweeted the campus is safe but said there will be an enhanced police presence. this is welcomed news after a

scary night that started with a report of a suspicious man, possibly armed. a quieter than usual campus, no scheduled classes. this catholic university senior joined others for an 8:30 mass on this holy day. >> i think there was an awareness of what happened and a gratefulness, gratitude. >> reporter: a sense of relief after last night's uproar a shelter in place order prompting a school-wide lockdown. >> last night i got the alert around 1:17. >> it is a shame that that suspect had to decide to come through this area. >> reporter: a series of text messages and tweets alerted students of a possible armed man and suspicious package. >> i was a bit on edge. of course, like, there was so much unknown that it was hard to know how to react. but at the same time i'm very grateful that we were safe. >> reporter: after several hours of searching including

evacuating two buildings, the all-clear came just before 3:00 a.m. from d.c. police and campus security. no explosives found, and a return to normal activities. >> deemed the campus safe. >> was a relief. i was grateful that we were kept safe. it was great that it's the feast day of the immaculate consumption. it's a beautiful affirmation that we're taken care of. >> reporter: students i spoke with still say they have more questions this morning, including whether there was an actual suspicious person or was that a false alarm. nevertheless, they still praised the university response. we reached out to the university for comment this morning but they haven't gotten back to us. live in northeast d.c., molette green, news 4. back to you. right now this 19-year-old woman is missing from spotsylvania county. katelin akens was last seen three days ago. her parents dropped her off at

developing now, a diverted air france flight is about to land that paris. it left san francisco 3:00 p.m. yesterday and then was grounded in montreal for several hours overnight. someone made an anonymous threat against the flight. it was deemed a hoax. there were 231 passengers on board. they're expected to land now in paris just before noon. in south africa, oscar

pistorius is going back on house arrest. a judge granted him bail this morning after he was ruled a murderer in his girlfriend's death. a judge changed the conviction from manslaughter last week. pistorius will spend the next four months at home until he is sentenced for the killing. he is planning on appealing that decision to the south african constitutional court, the equivalent of the u.s. supreme court. today you could run into new security checks on metro. metro officers are conducting random bag checks at station entrances. they are looking for possible explosives. there are more than 20 canine teams doing security sweeps around rail stations. metro stepped up security after the attacks in paris. it's your chance to weigh in on one of the biggest transportation projects in our

a trial is starting today for a chicago police commander accused of shoving the barrel of his gun down the suspect's throat and threatening to kill him. and there is new video showing chicago officers using a taser on a different man who died in police custody in 2012. phillip coleman was accused of beating on his mother. six officers go into his cell. one uses a stun gun, another drags 38-year-old coleman by his wrists which are handcuffed.

12 seattle cops are on leave after a deadly chase. police video here showing officers speeding after a carjacking suspect on sunday, trying to catch him. the driver crashes multiple times and then starts firing at the officers. police shot back and they killed him. three officers were hurt in the chase including an officer who broke his collarbone. lawmakers in the district will consider tougher fines for traffic offenses. the d.c. council will hear testimony today on a bill that would increase fines for distracted driving. if approved the bill would suspend someone's license if they had three citations in one year. according to aaa, citations for distracted driving are down in the district as drivers have become more vigilant. jumping into action. wait until you hear what a nurse used to save a life on an airplane. and a scary new superbug

many people are still becoming distracted while driving, and there's a new threat. 29% of drivers admit to surfing the web while behind the wheel, that's up 13% from 2009. another 21% say they're reading their facebook or twitter feeds. more than one-third are texting while driving. that number stayed about the

the home of maryland football may soon have a different name. university of maryland president wallace lowe is asking the board of regents to change the name of byrd stadium. opponents say the former college president had racist views. the board will take up the proposal on friday. if approved, byrd's legacy would be recognized in one of the main libraries. metro leaders are working to approve metrorail and bus. a new study says metrobus satisfaction is up even as satisfaction in the rail system has gone down. to accommodate growing ridership, metro will need nearly 400 new buses over the next several years. we learned the transit agency plans on buying close to 1200 new buses, almost all of them used as replacements, not new additions to the system. right now, a harmful gas inside some local schools what school leaders say they plan to

>> they're checking radon levels in schools. derrick ward attended a meeting of the school board this morning. he joins us live. what have we learned? >> reporter: we heard from the interim superintendent, larry bowers. he presented his budget for the 2017 school year. it's a $2.4 billion budget, which is $103 million increase over last year. the priority is closing the achievement and opportunity gap, he said that he found among minority and nonminority students. another issue inserted into the budget is radon, this after elevated levels of the cars ssue was found at some schools. that was an unexpected budget item and he'll have to move around money to pay for it. >> we'll have to reallocate some resources. as you know, we said that we will do testing in all of our

schools. so there will have to be additional resources realigned. >> reporter: we're talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars at this point. that's just for testing. if there's the need for remediation that could mean more money. we have talked about -- or they have talked about a property tax increase for schools among other priorities in the county. that might mean that montgomery county residents will have to pretty much show their support for education and safety among students. he calls this a foundation budget. he said you can't cut your way out of the problems they have anymore. and there may be more spending increases, and that could be larger than expected if there is the need for remediation of radon. >> he wanted to make a difference and had a deep compassion to treat people with dignity and respect as he did his job. >> reporter: that's the colleague and mentor of montgomery county police officer

the tree on the left was watered daily. the tree on the right, no water for weeks. within seconds, the dried out tree explodes like dry kindling. within 90 seconds, what firefighters call a flashover. the entire room consumed by fire. christmas tree fires cause some 200 house fires each year. ten people killed, hundreds injured. >> during the holidays, hundreds of kids are taken to the er with burns. >> reporter: this year, shriner's hospital for children is trying to get the word out. in annapolis, maryland last winter, four children and their grandparents died when their house caught fire. the cause was a fault near a christmas tree. >> how quickly the tree dries depends on the type of tree, how it's cut and how often it's watered when on display. >> reporter: something we saw firsthand in the lab. up until this morning this tree was sitting in water.
