sad news, the montgomery county police officer hit by a suspected drunk driver one week ago today has died. officer noah leotta passed away this morning. he was out on holiday dui patrol. he was outside his cruiser when that driver crashed into him. we are hearing that a police escort will leave suburban hospital with officer leotta's body this afternoon and travel to the district station where officers are expected to salute their friend, back to you. >> reporter: live at a construction site in northeast where a search for missing relisha rudd is under way. you can see d.c. police, cadets, members of the fbi and others. they're doing a grid search,

slowly walking in a line and looking down at the ground. there are also specially trained dogs sniffing around the area. relisha rudd was last seen 21 months ago. relisha was captured on surveillance video at a hotel very close to this construction site being searched now. she was with 51-year-old kahlil tatum, a janitor from the shelter where relisha and her family were living at the time. a review of old and new information brought investigators to this spot today. >> we tried to piece together a lot of that stuff through a variety of different technologies and video and information from people who saw mr. tatum. so now analyzing some of that information, we have a couple different places we want to look at. >> reporter: and this search here is expected to last most of the day. the chief says if they don't find anything here, there is a

second location that they will search in the coming days that they may find interest in the second location. she wouldn't specify though why they were interested in that spot. reporting live in northeast, news4. today, we are watching the defense in the freddie gray case in baltimore. we expect a prisoner to take the stand. he said in the past that he heard gray hitting his head against the van. the defense is claiming gray was trying to hurt himself and broke his neck. reporters who interviewed the inmate may also take the stand today. officer william porter is charged with manslaughter and assault and is the first of six baltimore police officers to go on trial in gray's death. we are in the courtroom right now and we'll have the latest on the trial on news4 this afternoon. we're working to learn more

about a deadly crash in prince georges county. the driver died. this happened on landover road. the road was closed, but it is reopened now. at this hour, it's not clear why the driver lost control of the car. in anne arundel county, fire investigators are going through a house that burned today.v!2y one person died. firefighters have not said if the victim was a man or a woman. another person is unaccounted for as well. at this point, fire investigators have not said what started that fire. and a few hours, a series of classified briefings on the san bernardino shootings will begin on capitol hill. the fbi revealed new details about the suspects. director james comey says they had plans to attack other targets, they may have been radicalized for years. fbi says a relative bought the

assault rifles used in the attack. >> also this afternoon, there will be a funeral for one of the attack victims. she was 27 years old and the youngest of four cysters. >> we're watching for developments from chicago right now where there could be more protests today. we want to show you looking at a police board meeting protest last night. this all comes after multiple videos showing white chicago police officers beating or shooting black men. the chicago police department is under investigation by the department of justice right now. and after a foggy start this morning, we're looking at a beautiful afternoon. here's a live look outside with our city camera. not a cloud in the sky. if you are in far western maryland, still tracking some fogginess there. for everybody else, no longer an issue for the rest of today.

call for tighter gun control. nancy pelosi joins two connecticut senators and some of the relatives of the sandy hook victims early this morning. >> the moments of silence are deafening and they're killing us. we should be embarrassed. and the first thing i wanted to do is thank all of you for being here. >> it's been nearly three years since a lone gunman opened fire at the elementary school in connecticut. 26 people died. now a very different response. some college students may soon be able to bring guns into their dorm rooms in virginia. last friday, the school president jerry falwell jr. encouraged students and other members of the community to get permits to carry concealed weapons. he said guns were needed in case of an armed assault on campus. today, you can learn more about the plans to give

tomorrow morning. you can see areas of fog around. but visibilities for most of us not too much of an issue. but as we work our way toward that morning rush, notice visibilities right around a mile or maybe even a little bit less. once visibilities start to get under a mile, this is when fogginess becomes an issue. any fog burns off tomorrow by 9:00, 10:00 a.m. after nearly a ten-hour police standoff, things are back to normal in northwest d.c. this morning. an area was shut down as police were negotiating with 22-year-old armed carjacking suspect warren stevenson. arlington county officials are coming around on the 395 express lanes in a letter, the board expressed optimism and concerns about extending the lanes north through arlington through the d.c. line.

two big stories developing at this hour. the first out of alabama. take a look at this video of a tractor-trailer on fire. the highway it's on is now almost totally reopened. it was shut down in both directions when the truck blew up last night. the tractor-trailer was carrying multiple heavy duty chemicals. the driver said he smelled something, pulled over, and called 911. then the truck exploded. hazmat cleanup crews have been clearing that road all morning long. swiss police say officers in geneva are actively searching for suspects linked to last month's attacks in paris. this is video of similar raids in france. swiss officers did not say how many people they are looking for or reveal their names. they say the city received an alert about the possible suspects last night. remember, 130 people died in a

i'll have the temperatures you can expect over the weekend in ten minutes. happening right now, president obama is just about to sign a bill overhauling no child left behind. we have a live picture we want to show you at the white house right now where the president is speaking, just about to sign this bill. now, supporters say the new law will give control back to local school district skpts states. critics call it unworkable and overreaching. students will still have to take federally required stayed wide reading and math exams. the new law encouragers states to limit the time students spend on that type of testing. no child left behind was president bush's signature legislation initiative. developing right now, more props for chi polt lay. more than 120 people are now sick after eating at a

of the numbers here. hawaii took the top spot in the 2015 report. maryland came in, slipped two places actually at number 18. the report cited a growth in violent crime and a decline in federal health funding. also virginia came in in 21st place with smoking being one of its biggest health challenges. west virginia, almost, almost, almost ranks in towards the bottom, 47th place. partly because of rates of smoking and diabetes. the report didn't rank d.c. but listed violent crime and a low high school graduation rate. and louisiana comes in at number 50. the report cited obesity, smoking and a high number of children living in poverty. you can look for the entire breakdown of course on our nbc washington app. here's a reversal of what we have been told before. it looks like being happy

right now, montgomery county police are mourning one of their own. officer noah leotta died today. he was hit by a suspected drunk driver one week ago. officer leotta was 24 years old. a brand-new search under way right now for relisha rudd. crews are searching a construction site near a hotel where she was last seen. we're live there now with what led to this new search. >> reporter: it was actually a couple of different things. investigators looked at some old information, they got some new information, also the site where they're searching right now, this is near the place where relisha rudd was last seen. you can see behind me, we have a number of officers as well as people with the office of the medical examiners office there,

the folks in the jackets, a little while ago an officer took a rake and a shovel out of his trunk and they walked over to that wooded area. this is a very large area. there is a lot of debris. a lot to take in and to sift through. so we're not sure what if anything this is over here that you see behind me. where is relisha rudd? a review of old and new information has prompt add new search. a construction site across the street from the 5th district police station, and just down the street from the hotel where relisha was last seen in the company of kahlil tatum. >> we really have done some extensive dives into the information that we've had and then new information came in as to different possibilities about the movement of mr. tatum. >> reporter: specially trained dogs began this morning's search, then cadets and law enforcement officers set out on foot. the area is large with lots of

debris. if nothing is found here, the chief says a second location will be searched in the coming days. it was 21 months ago that relisha run, then 8, disappeared. experts say the lapse in time and a delay in her being reported missing makes finding relisha more difficult, but not impossible. >> the search will continue until relisha has been found. we will continue that no matter how long that takes. we all face the same reality. the longer this goes on, the chance of us finding her does diminish. we've found children over many, many years' time. >> reporter: she was last seen march 1st, 2014 with this man, kahlil tatum. he was a janitor at the d.c. general shelter when relisha and her family were staying. relisha's family allowed her to spend time with tatum. as the investigation moved forwa forward, tatum's wife was found

murder. tatum later committed suicide, taking what he may have known about relisha's whereabouts to the grave. you're looking at some of the search efforts taking place live -- [ no audio ] new today, presidential candidate donald trump has scrapped his trip to israel. trump was due to head there later this month. he took to twitter to announce the canceled trip. he says he will reschedule the trip after he becomes president. benjamin netanyahu criticized trump yesterday. he's one of the most famous muslims in the world. now muhammad ali is speaking out against donald trump. 73-year-old ali converted to islam back in 1964. he says there's nothing islamic about killing innocent people. he took aim at trump without

during the evening hours it's going to be comfortable. temperatures in the mid-50s. the weather having a low impact on that evening commute. tomorrow morning, likely tracking areas of fog. i'll have the latest coming up in about ten minutes. new plans from volkswagen today, the company says it's going above and beyond its emissions testing. new cars will also measure emissions while on the road. vw also said an independent company will review those tests. since september, volkswagen stock plummeted after it admitted secret software allowed it to cheat emissions testing in the u.s. information that may help you pick your next vehicle. the annual vehicle safety picks came out just a few hours ago. they awarded 61 vehicles with the top safety pick title. of those, 48 get even higher scores putting them in the safety pick plus category. the chrysler 200 is the only

dead americans. >> as girinvestigators dig for clues, we're also learning there may have been other targets. another building or public gathering. lawmakers are expected to learn more today from the fbi homeland security and the national counterterrorism center. we're also learning this morning that the state department is backing the visa waiver program changes. democrats and republicans, by the way. that program allows people in 38 different countries to come here without a visa. the change if they've been to iraq, iran, syria or sudan, they'd have to get that visa no matter where they're flying in from. in officer william porter's trial in baltimore right now, a man is due to take the stand. he rode in the baltimore police van where freddie gray died. he was scheduled next. in interviews yerlier this
