former school teacher and librarian murdered in her own home. the 67-year-old's son now charged with the crime on fagan drive. >> julie carey is live from the neighborhood not far from downtown fredericksburg. julie? >> reporter: well, you can see, crime scene tape up around this house that was the scene this morning of a family tragedy. i can tell you there have been a lot of tears shed across this community today for the victim betsy ellis. she was found dead inside this home that she shared with her adult son christopher. with more than 30 years in this community as a middle school teacher and a librarian, she touched many lives. now her son, 38-year-old christopher ellis, he is in custody tonight. he is charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death. the sheriff's office responded this morning around 5:00 a.m. to a neighbor's call that krychris

ellis was in the backyard screaming. ellis initially assaulted a deputy, but he later was taken into custody. when investigators got inside the house that tragic discovery, betsy ellis was dead suffering from blunt force trauma wounds. coming up on news 4 at 5:00, you will hear from that neighbor who heard those startling screams this morning. betsy ellis used to be his school teacher. back to you now in the studio. this is chris gordon with the breaking news from baltimore. the defense has rested in the trial of baltimore police officer william porter. the jury has been sent home for the day. the defense presented an expert witness. baltimore police captain justin reynolds who testified the primary responsibility for the safety of passengers with the van driver that officer porter was called in as a backup, that it was reasonable, that officer porter didn't seat belt freddie

others were injured. the through bridge was closed at 6:30, causing huge delays into prince george's county. mare land state police are still investigating. virginia state police are searching for a driver in winchester. the suspect is lamar woodbridge -- of woodbridge. actually his name is woolridge, woolridge of woodbridge. he ran into a man outside the parking lot of the blue fox billiards bar and grill. it happened this morning. the two men fought inside the restaurant and the victim was taken to the hospital. condolences for a fallen montgomery county police officer pouring into our nbc washington facebook page. officer noah leotta died one week after he was hit by a suspected drunk driver. the driver has not been charged, but as mark segraves report, the tragedy is triggering new

conversations about drunk driving prevention. >> reporter: it was along this stretch of rockville pike where officer leotta was hit by a suspected drunk driver. yesterday the chief of montgomery county police gave an impassioned statement saying leotta's family would probably never see any real justice because of what he characterized as maryland's weak laws against drunk drivers. we spoke with criminal defense attorneys and experts in this feel and they all agree that maryland does lag behind the rest of the country when it comes to prosecuting drunk driving cases, particularly when they involve serious injury or even death. fact is, if you kill someone in maryland while you're drunk driving the chances of you spending any real time in jail is unlikely. >> they're not serving any significant jail time. it devastates the family because they're expecting the maximum they can get is ten years and they want that ten years. we don't see that ever and even when we do it's turned over on appeal. >> reporter: the driver in the case of officer leotta has not

been charged and that case remains under investigation. in montgomery county, mark segraves, news 4. now to the presidential race. a new national poll suggests 57% of all adults disagree with donald trump's proposal to bar muslims from entering the u.s. 25% of adults do agree with the proposal, but views are mixed among republicans. 42% of those polled support the proposal, 36% oppose it. democratic presidential candidate martin o'malley blasted donald trump's proposal in a visit to the largest mosque in our area. the former maryland governor went to the adams center in loudoun county to show solidarity with the nation's muslim community. >> donald trump and his sort of language is not what america is about. [ applause ] >> o'malley is currently running a distant third behind hillary clinton and bernie sanders in the race for the democratic

nomination. >> let's get to storm team 4 meteorologist doug kammerer and the storm cent. doug, another warm day from mid-december and not everyone is feeling the same temperatures. we had some cloud cover around the region and that kept some numbers down while others in the sunshine popped all of the way up to 70. take a look at the numbers and this was some of the warmest of the day and 73 degrees in stanton and 70 in warrenton, and washington at 65 degrees and frederick at 61 and just a few hours ago we were only in the 50s around frederick, but now everybody is seeing in that sunshine. >> here's the cloud cover that we're talking about, and a very dirty atmosphere so to speak, but if you're heading out tonight, no problems, go out and enjoy your night. 58 degrees and nice weather and maybe a light jacket, but that's about it. i've got it coming up in a minute. >> thanks, doug. >> prince george's county police chief mark magaw announced his retirement from the force today. magaw is leaving the job

there are new developments out of chicago where for the first time we're hearing from the family of a teenager shot 16 times by a chicago police officer who is now charged with murder. the family held a news conference today and like so many others called for changes at the city and the national levels. video of laquan mcdonald's death last year set off days of

protests. calls for the mayor's resignation and demand for an overhaul of the police department. the family also asked for the president's help. >> mr. president, i want you to send a representative from the white house to convene a white house summit on gun violence and urban poverty and police brutality. >> the family said mcdonald's mother was not with them today because she's still hurting and traumatized by her son's death. tougher fines for drivers who break the laws are in the plans for d.c. this afternoon and ddot proposes eight of the violations would draw fines like not yielding to a bus or slowing down for a crash. those would cost $500 rolling through a right turn or red would cost you $200. other fines would go up by the hundreds. for example, driving 25 miles over the speed limit would cost you $1,000 instead of $300. the university of maryland's stadium is getting a new name.

closing arguments could begin as soon as monday. a photo surfaces online of citadel candidates wearing kkk-like costumes. ahead in a couple of minutes how the prominent military college responding. >> byrd state at the university of maryland is no more. this morning the board of regents voted to change the name to maryland stadium. news 4's molette green reports. >> after nearly two hours of discussion, the vote came to rename byrd stadium maryland stadium an historic and emotional issue that has polarized this college campus. now supporters say it sends a clear message that symbols matter and the university system's board of regents just being comboed down the most visible symbol on this campus. >> one is the ultimate example is to remove any merge offer of byrd from our history ignoring

we are and right now we're finally seeing some sunshine if the sun were to come out earlier in d.c. we might have hit 70 in d.c., but winds out of the south at 7 miles per hour and 59 in frederick and 69 down toward fredericksburg and we were at 73 in stanceon and now down to 71 degrees and incredible warmth for sure. if you're headed out on your friday night, nice and mild, temperatures mostly in the 50s will drop into the 50s by 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 and maybe the light jacket will be needed and no umbrella for sure. we will not need that. the umbrella can stay in the closet for the next couple elf days and we had cloud cover streaming on through and some of us saw clouds and others saw sunshine and i know that's what the deal will be tomorrow, too. look back to the west and there is a lot of cloud cover back to the west and how much cloud cover do we see tomorrow? that will have a big impact on the temperature range and it

will have an impact on the potential for fog overnight tonight. some looks will see fog, but the warm pattern remaining and cold weather back to the west and the snowstorm out ahead of it and again, we'll be setting records here across the east over the next up couple of days and many areas near 70 just like we were today and we'll stay this warm right on to early next week. 66 in d.c. and 70 in fredericksburg and 65 in leesburg and these numbers can go up if we get more sunshine and we need to watch that, too, as we move on through the day, sunday morning and we're expecting fairly thick fog and that hopefully burns off and we get up to 69 degrees with the sunshine during the afternoon and 68 degrees with shower activity and even behind it we're at 64 degrees and coming up tomorrow night i know it's been warm and you may not be thinking about winter and storm team 4 is still tracking winter for you and we have the special coming up at 7:30 and tune in

right here to nbc 4. amelia segal. she's in and she has the rest of the seven-day forecast coming up at 4:45. >> doug, thank you. good news, there hasn't been a collision reported between a drone and an aircraft, but there have been hundred happens of close calls. that according to a new report from the faa and there have been 241 reports of close encounters between drones and manned aircraft. 90 of the close encounters involve commercial jets and most occur within five miles of the airport which the faa prohibits from flying. new information on the runaway commuter train in boston. this afternoon investigators say human error was to blame. the six-car train took off suddenly yesterday without a driver. employees quickly realized what was happening and cut the power. the operator failed to properly engage the brake before stepping off the train. john rosa, the president of the citadel says he has no intention of stepping down.

civil rights activists have called for the resignation after cadets appeared in photos over their heads resembling ku klux klan hoods. eight cadets have been suspended since the photos appeared on social media and today members of a national action network said that's not enough. >> we are asking that all county, federal and state government funding cease immediately until this matter is resolved. >> president rosa released a statement today and condemned those photos. the swiss public broadcaster rts reports that two men of syrian origin have been arrested in jgeneva with traces of explosives found in their vehicles. we're looking into when they have ties to terror suspects. the swiss authorities raised their alert level after getting a tip from the cia. >> reporter: authorities here in geneva raised the terror threat

alert on thursday morning following a tip that four potential jihadists may have traveled to the swiss city between wednesday evening and thursday morning. of course, the authorities raised the terror alert. they also stepped up security and surveillance at the train stations and airports and the palais which is the headquarters of the united nations which is the first time in a while we've seen u.n. security guards wearing bulletproof vests and holding machine guns. the threats are not specific. the authorities are not saying they're specific terrorist attack and that may have led to a potential attack and also it becomes clear that the terror threat was raised from a level 2 to 3 out of a mix mum aximum of. nevertheless, the u.s. embassy in the capital here has issued a warning on thursday for all u.s. citizens traveling to the country or already in the country to be, of course, extra

there's new information about the norovirus outbreak at a chipotle restaurant in boston. the number of boston college students sick with norovirus has now jumped to 140. boston health officials confirmed the presence of a chipotle near campus earlier this week. the college says 12 of the six students did not eat at the restaurant. they got the virus from someone who had eaten at chipotle last weekend. gun rights supporters plan to hold a mock mass shooting tomorrow in austin, texas, but the university of texas refuses to allow them to do it on campus. the demonstration will be held next in the campus instead. the group argues that allowing guns on campuses will cut down on murderous rampages. we'll be using visual aides and it will be overdramatized and very unrealistic and this is not something that people will happen upon and think it is a real situation.

right now in stafford county, police are holding a 38-year-old man in the murder of his mother. betsy ellis was found dead this morning inside the home they shared. her son christopher was arrested after a neighbor called he was in the backyard scream. coming up in the next half hour what that neighbor, rather, talks with julie carey about this very tragic day. >> attorneys for the first baltimore officer tried in the death of freddie gray are done presenting their case now. the defense rested after three days of testimony and 12 witnesses. a baltimore police captain testified that officer william porter telling his superiors that gray wanted a medic went beyond what others would have done. ahead at 5:00, chris gordon will have what's next in this trial.

>> i'm darcy spencer in prince george's county where two female firefighters say they were assaulted while battling a fire right here on tuesday night. they say the two men who allegedly assaulted them are firefighters, volunteer firefighters from a separate station right here in prince george's county. these accusations are being investigated by the fire department. the prince george's county police department was called to the scene, but no charges have been filed. one woman says she was thrown from the porch of the home. another woman says she was shot. >> this is a very serious incident and we're looking forward to the results of the investigation from the fire department. >> reporter: coming up on news 4 at 5:00, i'll tell you what the fire department is doing in response to these allegations of assault. serious changes are happening here in prince george's county in terms of leadership after more than 30 years at the prince george's county police department chief mark magaw would now be director

wilkins. news 4. right now in san bernardino, an fbi dive team is searching a small lake near the site of last week's shooting. >> today we are learning what they may be looking for. we get the latest from nbc's chris clackum. >> reporter: the fbi won't say exactly what dive teams are looking for friday in a lake three miles from last week's massacre in san bernardino. >> the specific evidence we're looking for, we're not going to discuss, but we're just simply saying we're seeking evidence. >> reporter: sources tell nbc news they're looking for a computer hard drive and/or other digital evidence that might have been dumped there by syed farook or tashfeen malik on the day the two carried out the massacre. >> we did have a leak that indicated that the subjects came into this area. >> reporter: those sources also say investigators have digital evidence that farook and malik left behind that showed the two were in the final planning stage of another assault on a place bigger and with more people than

the inland regional center. their assault there last week left 14 dead, 22 injured before they were killed in a gun battle with police following a high-speed chase. services for two more victims were scheduled for friday including one for damian meins, a 58-year-old devout catholic whose life, friends say, was all about service to others. chris clackum, nbc news. a letter with a white powder inside that was sent to a muslim advocacy group is now being tested by the fbi. the council on american islamic relations got the letter yesterday and the offices were evacuated. initial testing showed the substance was not harmful. the fbi says additional testing is a standard procedure. the letter also contained a hate message. >> and comfortable if you're heading out this evening with temperatures in the 50s, but very late tonight and especially early tomorrow morning, areas of

>> reporter: terrel jones has been driving trucks since he was 18. >> not just yourself you're looking out for. you know, as far as when you're driving you have to watch the drivers and motorists around you. >> before this month, 48 states license young truck drivers as long as they stay within state lines. the new highway bill allows 18 to 20-year-olds to cross state lines if they learn to drive in the military. >> it's a dumb idea. why are we letting them drive when we see these studies that show that they have four to six times the fatal crash rates of more experienced and older drivers? >> reporter: where they drive isn't the point. >> i still don't understand what the difference is in crossing a state line. if they're safe to drive in the state, they should be safe to drive out of the state. >> reporter: safety is a concern. on average ten people die every day in truck accidents and it's usually the people in the other vehicle who get killed. they want more safety studies.

hover boards are on a lot of holiday wish lifts, but a rash of recent fires are raising concerns about their safety. the batteries have, that are used to power them may be a fire hazard. they have a history of overheating and catching fire in cell phones and laptops and they're blamed for the crash of a ups cargo plane in dubai five years ago. meanwhile, take a look at the hover board fire in gaithersburg earlier this month.

montgomery officials say the device is charging in an electrical outlet when it caught fire in a nearby bed. the fire caused $5,000 in damage. if you're trying to figure out whether to buy your kids a lot of presents for christmas. a british mother is under fire for the picture of her christmas tree posted on facebook. this is it. the tree is nearly buried beneath 300 presents for her three kids. the video was shared more than 300,000 times. she was blasted for being materialistic and for showing off her bounty when some people these days can barely afford anything. she responded whether you buy your kids two presents or two presents isn't important. it's the way she brings them up. she said she's not rich and watches for deals all year long so she can spoil her kids that one day on christmas. gop power brokers prepare for a convention fight.
