>> thanks so much, tom. teams make a discovery combing through a lake in san bernardino. the fbi won't say what was found. they have been looking for any evidence connected to the terrorist attack. several things found under water were brought to shore. the big item they are looking for is a hard drive. there was a tip that the shooters went by the lake on the day of the attack. >> ntsb will be out digging through a small plane crash in pennsylvania. the tail number tells us the plane is owned by a montgomery county resident. it took off from nemacolin woodlands report. two people died whether it crashed. one person did survive and was flown to a pittsburgh burn center. preparations are underway for the funeral of a montgomery county police officer. noah leota died on thursday hit by a suspected drunk driver last week. visitation set for monday from

2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. he will be buried in olney. they are asking for donations to several organizations, including mothers against drunk driving. today, a father in montgomery county is protest forg tougher penalties against drunk drivers. his daughter was killed by a drunk driver. that protest will be at a bar. right now, the maximum penalty for killing someone while driving drunk, ten years. experts say surviving families almost fall on financial hardship. maryland laws do not alaw victims to sue the person or the business that overserved drinkers. >> it is very unfortunate that we had to lose an officer, that he died in such a tragic way. maybe this is the case that makes the senators and delicates say we are done with this, we are tired of it. we want to see these laws.

>> advocates say they will be back in annapolis trying to convince lawmakers to change the state law. a possible breakthrough for police in the murder of a young woman. detectives have searched at least two noehomes. 21-year-old heather's body was found dead inned driveway. we are learning that the records for the case are now sealed. deputies have the young woman's cell phone. it contains critical text messages and phone calls she made before someone killed her. >> one man says the killings in d.c. need to stop. he hopes his display will help the community wake up. hector nuezo is hanging 154 sweaters at cal arama park this afternoon. each represents a homicide victim. alexandria city council will be on the job on a saturday. they will vote on pay raises for

members and the mayor. the mayor's salary could go up from just over 30,000 to $50,000. the part-time elected officials are paid less than those in other places, like arlington county. if approved, the raise would take effect in january with new mayor. the council members have not seen a pay raise since 2002. the holidays are about tradition and honoring one another. that's why for 23 years and counting, thousands of volunteers lay wreaths at arlington national cemetery. last year, every marker, all 227,000 were covered. the group is bringing in more trucks and wreaths at 9:00 this morning. drivers should suspect big crowds, kristin. that's right. metro riders should expect crowded stations. for the event, metro is running

full service. the blue line which serves the cemetery will run eight train cars to decision 2016. presidential candidate donald trump heads to south carolina. he has spent months attacking the opposition and now he is taking aim at members of his own party. trump is not happy with senator ted cruz. nbc's katy tur has more on that fight and it seems it is not the only one. >> reporter: protesters clashing with security at a private trump event. >> anger spilling into violence. >> as trump continues to take heat for his muslim ban. senator ted cruz is joining the trump critics. >> the american people are looking at greater seriousness and gravity at a commander in chief. >> reporter: at a private fund-raiser, cruz was more pointed. i like and respect both donald and ben. who am i comforting having their

finger on the button? that is a challenging question for both. >> in the past few months, cruz poll numbers have shot up. >> he clearly has the ability to organize the grass roots activists, the ability to raise money and the ability to convey a message. >> trump is itching for a fight with the texas senator. tweeting, ted cruz should not make statements behind closed doors to his bosses. he should bring them out into the open, more fun that way. the two have held fire since day one. >> i like donald trump. i'm a big fan of donald trump. i think he has been very beneficial for our campaign. >> with that unofficial alliance on the line, cruz says he won't attack back, at least not publicly. donald trump is terrific, hashtag, deal with it. other gop candidates aren't holding back. the lizard brain tends to make snap judgments. he wrote in a newspaper questioning trump and his

welcome back. neighbors are tired of being dark in arlington. >> the street lights on one street have been out for months. >> they want the streets safe. >> reporter: brighteneded only by the occasional car headlights, the darkness of the 2000 block of north cleveland in arlington is not the most serious problem. for months, it has been a most annoying one for the people that live here. >> it is narrow. there are no sidewalks. a couple of my neighbors are retired. they are feeling like they are taking their life into their hands if they walk at night. they can't move fast if a car comes down the road and they don't see them. >> reporter: the ornamental cast iron lamps in this block and only this block have not been

working since september. >> we haven't been able to get anything done. they did come about twice and this he got fixed, every other light but that one was still dark. >> reporter: jessica rodriguez worries the darkness could also be an invitation to crime. >> our next-door neighbor, they are retired, in their 80s. she is really concerned. >> reporter: an e-mail, a spokesperson for arlington county's department of environmental services tells news 4, there is an issue with the disconnect box, which is more complicated than a simple bulb repair. we've ordered parts and are waiting on them to arrive. estimated time of repair, 2-3 weeks. >> that was jackie bensen reporting. just how easy is it to get a fake passport and how easy is it for isis to get their hands on one. investigation revealed chilling findings. >> let's take a look out the window on this saturday morning. tom says we are going to get

as investigators learn more about the woman that killed 14 in san bernardino. nbc investigation found that american passports are being sold on the black market in greece. richard ingle has more. >> reporter: the streets of athens, migrants from the middle east can buy whatever they need, including a new identity. in july, greek police arrested hisen kubash, a syrian part of a document forging ring. they released the picture of the contents of a lab where genuine, stolen passports were doctored. an nbc news investigation revealed kubash also supplied forged american passports to a man he believed was working for isis. it was a sting. the buyer was a u.s. federal agent. these pictures are from the surveillance video of the meetings. >> reporter: the agent said he

wanted to buy four american passports and provided four photographs explaining they were of isis members. the transaction took place here and for little more than $11,000. the forger agreed. >> reporter: that was may 29th. five days later, cue bash handed the agent the forged passport. he was picked up by greece police from other charges. i asked him about his meeting with that american undercover agent. did he tell you he wanted the passports for members of isis? >> yes, he said that. you don't care who you sell the passports to or for what reason? >> i don't ask anybody what you want to do for passport. >> reporter: getting a fake

athens, is just a matter of price even for those who say they are shopping for isis. u.s. passports in the hands of isis fighters is a nightmare scenario. they were probably not good enough to get anyone through an airport. they could be good enough to be used through other places where controls are weaker. >> some military families who have lost everything are about to get some well-deserved holiday cheer. 1700 kids and spouses of fallin service members are flying to dallas this weekend. they will spend five days on an all expense paid trip, part of a snowball express and american airlines. the families leaving reagan national this morning will get the special sendoff they so deserve. >> take a look at this picture from an interstate in san jose, california. it was a lucky escape for a man in the bay area after a bizarre

million packages between last friday and new year's. up 10% from last year. that means more targets for thieves. in rancho cordoba, police officers dressed in street clothes are dropping off decoy packages. they are filled with fake electronics and gps tracking devices to hunt down anyone that steals them. >> the more people know we are doing this, the less likely they are to do it. >> reporter: a few thiefs to keep thieves away. set your own delivery times and use your shipping company's app to have the package redirected. ups has a program called ac sets point. you can sign up to have packages dropped off at a business and you can pick them up there. >> what was in the stolen boxes? >> a 12-pack of baking soda and a 24-inch metal ruler. >> reporter: not even the grinch could do much with that.

washi washington, jefferson memorial. 71 back in 1873. a look at how much longer this warm pattern is going to last. that's coming in a few minutes. >> police say it was arson that damaged a mosque in southern california. that fire burned through the front lob by of the islamic center in palm springs in coachella. it could have been worse. many mosque members were arriving for afternoon prayer there. in phoenix, another mosque has been vandalized. someone broke in, smashed two lights, sprayed graffiti on the walls. this mosque has been at the center of two armed protests targeting the muslim community. virginia governor terry mcauliffe has been visiting mosques and meeting with members there. we are getting our first look at some new video.

it shows the house fire where two female firefighters say they were assaulted. that's where the women say they were shoved by fellow firefighters delaying their response. it happened tuesday at a home. this altercation amounts to a turf war. two prince george's county career firefighters say they were shoved and pushed off a porch by volunteer firefighters from a different station. the career firefighters say they plan to file charges. >> the union wants to see a thorough investigation. if the allegations are proven to be accurate, we would like to see disciplinary action against the individuals involved. >> all four firefighters involved have been placed on desk duty during the investigation. while there was a delay in the fire response, fire officials tell us it didn't affect the

outcome. no one was hurt from the fire. >> a man is facing charges accused of murdering his mother inside their stafford county home. sheriff deputies say, neighbors heard christopher ellis yelling in his backyard early friday morning. when deputies got to the home, ellis asaulsaulted one of them. they found 67-year-old elizabeth ellis dead. she worked at a middle school teacher and at the library. she retired last year. arlington county will get finalized details for -- actually, we're going to go with this. we are going to continue here. christopher had struggled with mental health issues for years. they say he was the only other family member living in the house at that time. today, arlington county will finalize details for getting back it's taxing authority in the county. according to inside nova.com,

that authority was stripped away by the general assembly five years ago. included in the draft, a proposal for a surtax on hotel and motel stays. the county says before the taxes were ripped away from them, they brought around $1 million in revenue. the board also wants to be able to provide additional economic development incentives to developers and tennants the main event at the washington nationals off-season kicks off. head down to winterfest in northwest d.c. at 11:30 this morning. you are going to get a chance to meet some of the players. there is also lots of holiday themed fun sporting activities taking part in there. that event runs until sunday. developing in virginia, what we are learning about a bizarre and tragic accident.

an important warning. >> this is what was left of a hoverboard after it ignited and caused a fire inside this home on mineral springs drive in gate thursday burg. >> reporter: it ignited while it was being charged and rolled over to a bed and ignited the bedding in the bedroom. >> reporter: kevin frazier is the battalion chief for the montgomery county fire department. he says no one was hurt but it highlights the dangers that exist. this whoever board fire happened in alabama while a guy was riding on it. on tuesday, this was the scene inside a mall in washington state after a hoverboard ignited there. frazier says consumers need ton careful when buying a hoverboard or any other electronic device that was made outside of the u.s. often times, they are not regulated. >> look for products that have a u.l. listing on the box or the product they sell itself. also, read all the manufacture reference material. >> reporter: he also says many fires start when devices are
