emergency drill. >> that's right. first responders and police are training how to respond to daps situations there. "news4's" derrick ward is there live to show us what they're getting ready for. hey, derek. >> hey. we're in the forest glen metro station. we're in the tunnel. take a look what's going on there. this is one of two scenarios that they're working with today. one was a bomb on board a bus. they brought a robot out to take care of that. right now situation is fire and smoke on the train with some passengers self-evacuating and others needing to be evacuated. as you can see the firefighters are in the tunnel. they're evacuating people and bringing them out. you have the montgomery county fire and metro security and metro forces all taking part in this drill. this is probably a good trial by fire if you want to call it that for metro's new g.m. take a listen. we talk to the new incoming general manager. >> we'll see how we perform,

"news4's" darcy spencer shows us how a community is devastated while investigators come closer to answers. >> reporter: the annapolis yacht club with a history dating back to the 1800s and a popular destination for the sailing community was virtually destroyed in a three-alarm fire. this cups has found memories of attending functions at the club. >> there's a lot of history that was lost, i'm sure. a lot of historical documents and a lot. but as long as no one got hurt, they'll replace the building and

inside the home. still not clear how he died. police say the murder was not random. we're working to get an update on a bicyclist seriously hurt in rockville last night. he was hit by a car on east gude drive on south lawn lane. the driver of the car stayed on the scene and spoke with police. kayla akens has not been seen in more than a week. they searched the fredericksburg area yesterday. the 19-year-old vanished last week after her stepfather dropped her off at the franconia springfield metro station. she u was supposed to catch a flight but she never madet. tomorrow marks three years since the shooting at sandy hook elementary and members from moms demand action are walking from freedom plaza to the white house

now to the latest in the san bernardino shooting. a three-day under water search for a computer is over. authorities are being tight-lipped about saying what if anything they found in that lake. investigators say the couple may have tried to destroy electronic evidence. nbc's gadi swhartsz shows us how intelligence may have overlooked these suspects. >> reporter: she wasn't shy about her request for jihadees. tashfeen malik supported it and said she wanted to be a part of it. n b bc news has learned they we independently radicalized as early as 2010. malik's public social media posts may have been overlooked when her visa was processed. immigration officials ran her name against several databases but don't routinely check social

the m. echlt says erik karlsson passed away. two others also died in this crash. a reston based counseling firm released a statement saying all of the victims worked for the company. their plane crashed friday afternoon after shortly taking off from a private airport in pennsylvania. >> tragic story there. it's such an unfortunate story. robbers broke into the angel tree headquarters and stole donated gifts meant to go to needy children. "news4's" darcy spencer with more. >> reporter: thieves ripped through dozens of donated items meant to bring smiles to children on christmas morning. workers showed up in southeast d. krchl and found that 300 of the 2,500 family bags with collected toys for needy d.c. kids were ransacked.

behind bars protecting us and each other. but is a shortage of prison guards making them a prime target? >> yeah. an investigation by scott macfarlane reveals a series of attacks that are raising questions about the safety of men and women guarding local prisoners and protecting the local community. >> reporter: it's morning rounds at a federal prison in washington state. its officerer opens doors like he does most days except this day is different. w567 as an inmate nearby jumps up and takes him. it's only after other inmates intervene that the correctional officer is safe. there is no footage available of the attack that killed jill williams' son. >> we got a marker on our door at 1:30 in the morning. >> reporter: a prison inmate stabbed her son 200 times with a makeshift blade. >> we never got to say good-bye to eric.

>> reporter: eric's parents say he was a veteran police officer who decided to serve the corrections department. >> it took eight minutes for this attack to take place. >> reporter: his fare said eric was a sitting duck. >> he was the only person with these highly violent inmates and he's unarmed. what he had was a set of keys. >> reporter: such attacks have led to tickets and protests by federal prison officers in recent months saying they're in danger because staffing is too thin. >> many staffers have received death threats. >> reporter: sommer starr says the number of attacks on staff is rising there too. at least seven injured since 2013. >> a skeletal roster. >> a skeletal roster means he's got too many inmates and not enough guards? >> exactly. >> reporter: just 2% of the staff are authorized to have by the u.s. congress. >> when you have hundreds of

inmates in a confined space and there's only one corrections officer and that's often been the case, that's a recipe for disaster. >> reporter: u.s. senator bob casey has requested to equip more. star says in recent months some guards in our area were only equipped with radios and keys. >> it's really no secret. inmates know it. >> reporter: in february the u.s. bureau of prisoners authorized all staff at high and medium prison to carry pepper spray locally. they authorized it. a spokesperson wouldn't tell us how many actually have it or carry it now and as for the staffing level, they've never had 100% staffing. that it must use its budget for more than staff like food, lights, medical, and water.

"news4's" derrick ward is there live to show us what kind of scenarios they're practicing. moments ago you were inside the tunnel and now you're out. >> reporter: it's going to be closed until 2:00. there's a lot going on. take a look at what's happening behind me. this is a scenario where they have at least one explosive device, maybe even more on a metrobus. again, i want to stress this is only a drill. there are technicians on the bus. there's another on the bus and another that's out of our view here. so this gives you an idea of what goes on. this isn't in response to anything specific. this is ntsb mandated. meanwhile underground, another scenario very life-like. a train stuck in the tunnel.
