security guards in d.c. ruled a homicide. what the medical examiner says caused his death. >> we begin at the live desk. we are learning about new details about a man charged with supporting isil terrorists. the hartford man took money he knew was intended to cause destruction or conduct an attack. his name is mohamed elshinawy and lying to theryz fbi when questioned about it. the fbi search warrant indicates elshinawy lives from the aberdeen proving ground. there it is. the feds asked the court for permission to raid his known address and to search it for computers. an fbi agent says elshinawy accepted thousands through paypal and through western union and the feds say they questioned elshinawy about tied to isil in

july or that he cut off or began masking his communication with isil thereafter. there was no indication he planned any attacks in the court records we reviewed, but elshinawy made a pledge to support isil and made a desire to die a martyr. he denied every intention to carry out an attack and he was trying to take away money from isil and there's evidence he lied during questioning and el shinawy is charged with making false statements and he was charged at 3:00 this afternoon and could face more than 20 years in prison. at the live desk i'm scott macfarlane. >> let's get to storm team 4 chief meteorologist. doug, are we going to need the umbrellas out there tonight? >> i think it's a good idea to take those umbrellas with you. here's storm team 4 radar and you notice already we've got some rain moving in across the region. that rain coming through parts of northern virginia and take a look at the heaviest rain back

click a seat belt or click a radio to call for a medic. two, three or four seconds is that worth a life? because she says that's all it would have taken. in court today in closing statements prosecutors say freddie gray went into the van healthy and came out dead. they accused the officer of lying saying freddie gray didn't tell them he couldn't breathe. porter didn't call for a medic and officer porter didn't care enough to seat belt him in said the prosecutor. in closing arguments for the defense they argued that freddie gray's death was a horrifying tragedy. the defense won the jury that the prosecutors are playing upon the fears that arose upon the death of freddie gray. they say porter acted as a responsible officer, reasonable, reporting to the van driver that freddie gray wanted to go to the hospital. they asked the jury to find him not guilty of all four charges against him. >> i think everybody is on edge

and when i mean on edge they're anxious to see justice for freddie. >> reporter: now the jury has been deliberating about two hours now and we will keep you updated as we monitor deliberations and developments into the evening. whether you're watching for your news on your cell phone, your laptop, we will also be updating you on news 4 at 5:00. so we're keeping an eye on things here in baltimore. that's the latest live. chris gordon, news 4. >> now to a case here in washington about a man who died in the custody of two security guards. wendy rieger is at the live desk with new word from the medical exacter in. >> the medical examiner has ruled alonzo smith's death was a homicide. smith was found unconscious in southeast d.c. in an apartment building there and he was handcuffed and not breathing. police say he was in the custody of special security officers who were on duty to provide security for that building. they were armed and they are

licensed by the city. the medical examiner's report says smith died of sudden cardiac arrest, complicated by acute cocaine toxicity. that report also says compression of the torso was a contributing factor. just because the medical examiner rules this a homicide, it does not mean that a crime was committed. the security guards have not been identified. d.c. police say their investigation continues. back to you. president obama says his ramped-up strategy against ice sis paying off overseas. >> mr. obama met with the national security team at the pentagon today. afterward, he told reporters that isis has not had a single successful major military operation on the ground in iraq or syria since the summer and he says they've lost territories in both countries. >> meanwhile, people are seeing isil for the thug and the thieves and the killers that

they are. we've seen incidentses of isil fighters defecting and others have been executed and isil's reign of brutality and extortion continues to repel local populations and help fuel the refugee crisis. >> president obama also noted that defense secretary ash carter is traveling to the mideast today to enlist more help in the fight against isis. >> right now, 14s ph friends, f and fellow officers are paying respects to noah leotta. he died because of a severe head injury. he was 24 years old and hit by a suspected drunk driver. it is wrapping up at the covenant life church at gaithersburg and we're hearing there is another viewing tonight at 7:00 and his funeral is scheduled for tomorrow morning. a 17-year-old sits in jail charged in the murder of a man in fort washington. police say graden hawkins and 44-year-old keith williams got into an argument and hawkins ended up stabbing williams. police found williams inside a

car and he tried to drive off from the scene and hawkins is being charged as an adult. in fairfax, gun control advocates are gathering outside the national rifle association demanding stronger gun laws. the parents of allison parker were right there with them. parker was the reporter who was shot to death. today's protest comes exactly three years after the shooting at sandy hook elementary school. >> we cannot allow our children to become collateral damage and that's exactly what they have become. it's unacceptable for children at sandy hook or our daughter allison and for all of these other people's children to die. waiting to hear from the nra about the latest protest and the specific calls for tougher gun laws. it always happens during rush hour. we have at reagan national airport the bomb squad is there

and now your storm team 4 forecast. >> showers are moving through so roads are wet or will be turning wet. 63 to 68 degrees and at least it will still be mild across the area and check out the beltway right now. fairly quiet here. most of the rain 70 to 70 and clarksburg, germantown, montgomery village and while today has been mild, our temperatures take a real dip on friday and for the weekend, but it's not going to stay that cold. doug's got more on what you can expect with a roller coaster ride in just a few minutes. who will become america's next president? there is a bit of a shift right now? a new nbc news wall street journal poll in a head to head matchup. surprisingly, the democratic front-runner would lose to marco rubio or ben carson.

angel tree warehouse. thieves broke into the building in southeast over the weekend. news 4's mark segraves has the story. >> reporter: these are some of the more than 2,000 bags salvation army has ready to go out to needy families in the d.c. area. as you know, thieves broke in here saturday morning and made off with what they say was $20,000 worth, mostly of electronic equipment, kindles, i ipads and that type of thing, tearing through the bags and only taking the high-end merchandise. salvation army tells us walmart has stepped up with a $20,000 donation and the washington nationals will support this effort to make sure that all of the children who were going to get these gifts are still going to have a very merry christmas. police did arrest a juvenile male and female who were caught by salvation army volunteers.

a volunteer saw a volunteer riding a bike and saying hey, do you like my new bike and that's what gave them an indication something was wrong. mark segraves, news 4. gas was already cheap and you go to the gas station and the price just keeps on dropping. at this point it is now at levels we haven't seen in years. the transportation reporter adam tuss, trying to put it into context for us. >> we're not really complaining, are we, chris? some of the lowest gas prices we've seen since 2009. here are some numbers to show you exactly what's happening around here and the current national average $2.01 and the cheapest gas is in virginia where a gallon of regular averages $1.84. in maryland the price is $2.02. drivers say that they're saving even more when they couple gas

46. we're 20 degrees above average and just a few degrees shy of a record. 67 in huntingtown and you can see the rain on storm team 4 radar and maryland from the pennsylvania border and all of the way down to southern maryland and most of this is on the light side and it will toon to be, but we have a couple of heavier showers around the winchester area and back around martinsburg and notice along i-81 and right on out to the west on route 50 and we'll continue to see showers and we'll all get in on the shower activity tonight, but we're not expecting a lot here, most of the storm is moving up to the north and you can see this as we get back up into motion here. scattered showers around the region and the storm itself is way back to our north and west. that's why once again, we get in on the warm side of this storm. the cold side, way up here toward minneapolis and toward the great lakes. a winter storm in december with almost no snow in the u.s. absolutely amazing.

right now the jury is deliberating the case against a baltimore police officer charged in the death of freddie gray. gray died in the back of a police van last april. prosecutors say officer william porter ignored a policy to strap prisoners in with a seat belt. the officer is accused of ignoring gray's request to get medical attention. porter could get 25 years in prison if he's convicted.

many of us have been going through quite the wardrobe change over the last couple of weeks from the lightweight winter-type clothes to the fall clothe again and then we're going go back to winter clothes and then you get the idea. back and forth we go. we have rain and heading out, look at this. the rain continues across areas of i-66 and we are at willow springs and all moving east and the beltway will get more and i-95, and woodbridge will be getting some of that rain and mount vernon is wet, but at least the showers are light. for early tomorrow morning the rain is gone and we're dry, breezy. the temperature 63 degrees and take a look at this. we do have another chance to get some rain. this event, rather light and we'll get moderate and maybe heavy rain on thursday and quite a bit more and what that's going to give us is our next significant change that you'll notice saturday morning windchills in the 20s. we've got more on that coming up. thanks, v.j.

american child has died from gun violence every other day in this country. 554 american children have died in shootings in the last three years. some were accidental and others were intentional. those numbers apply to boys and girls younger than 12. there is a new study out today about a possible link between antidepressants taken between pregnancy and autism and this is a headline that may be unsettling to a lot of women. andrea edwards breaks it down and helps explain the potential risks. >> reporter: the new study from researchers in canada is large, involving more than 145,000 kids followed from birth through age 10. its findings are important. the author says women who took anti-depress ants during pregnancy especially during the second and third trimesters had an increased risk of having a child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. it's also important to point out that increase in risk was extremely small. >> for women who are taking antidepressants during

pregnancy, they found that they have one-half of 1% of an increase in having an autistic child. >> while the study did find an association, it does not prove antidepressants cause autism. depression itself may play a role. while the researchers continue to sort out the possible link, doctors who treat pregnant women say those with mild depression may want to talk to their physician about going off medication and trying other therapies instead. for women with more severe forms of depression it's dangerous to stop taking antidepressants abruptly without consulting a doctor. >> untreated depression leads to higher incidences of alcohol and substance abuse and those are known to be harmful to the development of fetuses. an estimated 10% to 13% of pregnant women in the u.s. take an antidepressant. the majority of them do not have a child with autism. erika edwards, nbc news. the average woman in this country now wears a size 14.

thanks. this is the venetian in las vegas, site of tomorrow night's debate where a lot of people figured we could see more fire from donald trump than we have for a couple of debates and why not? he's buoyed up by his top polling in some polls, by support unexpected to many for his demand that muslims temporarily not be allowed to enter the u.s. and at the same time trump has to look over his shoulder at two different rivals. donald trump heads to las vegas with plenty to worry about even though he's hit a new high in one poll, 41% in today's monmouth national survey of republicans, but in a general election matchup with hillary clinton, in today's nbc news wall street journal poll, trump fares the worst losing to clinton by ten. marco rubio does it best and rubio trying out a general election pitch in his new ad. >> this is about the greatest country in the world and acting like it. >> reporter: but it's ted cruz

who is surging, polling first ahead of trump now in iowa and coming out strong in the latest nbc news poll. trump leads at 27, up four, but cruz is just five points back. apparently, picking up much of ben carson's support as carson drops a stunning 18 points. and in las vegas today, many republicans who like trump say they're taking a new look at the texas senator. >> i like cruz better than trump at this point. >> trump, like? >> yes. trump light and politically correct. >> he's more polished and he's been in this arena for quite some time and i think he knows how congress works. >> reporter: trump trying to slam cruz and also praised him in the eyes of some republicans for shaking up congress. >> you look at the way he's dealt with the senate where he goes in there like, frankly, like a little bit of a maniac. cruz is embracing the maniac label so far refusing to attack donald trump. cruz clearly does not want to

and it's out of here ending just after midnight and 49 to 57 degrees and looking like it will be mostly clear and it could be breezy, too and it's not going to be that cold and our temperatures will start to drop by the end of the week. here's a look at the highs for tomorrow and germantown, 61, the high. 63, waldorf and la platta. mild across the area which i think a mixture of clouds and sunshine. the clouds will come and go throughout the day. here's 5:00 a.m. and you can see a few clouds at 8:00 and then you can see sunshine and by the end of the day there could be more clouds coming back. we had 60 degrees at lunchtime tomorrow still way above average and those mid to upper 40s for this time of year even at 8:00 we're looking at a temperature of 52 degrees and tomorrow is looking nice with the weather having a very low impact on our area, dry and continued warm. throughout the week we have more a-plus weather coming our way, sunshine with a high of 48 and then by the time we get to the end of the week and by the time we get to the end of the week and that's the next front tuesday and next chance of rain.

disturbing new details about the deadly house fire in seve earn. police tell us they're investigating the case as a homicide because diana knight suffered injuries to her upper body. a man was found dead in the home last thursday and his death is still under investigation. this same house caught fire earlier this year when it was under construction, but that fire was ruled an accident. >> a bicyclist made a decision that cost him his life. 37-year-old samuel vigil died last night a day after colliding with a car on east gudy drive in rockville. police say he rode his bike against a p/eedestrian signal.
