continue as normal right now. the terminal has not been evacuated and those airline counters are still open. >> now to the verdict watch in the trial against the first officer charged if the death of freddie gray. the jury got the case against william porter this afternoon. news 4 chris gordon joins us live from the courthouse where both sides came out swinging in their closing arguments today. chris? >> jim, the charges are manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct. to reach a verdict all 12 members of the jury must be unanimous and vote either that officer porter is not guilty or guilty on each of the charges. >> the prosecutor began closing arguments by telling the jury freddie gray went into the van healthy and freddie gray came out dead. prosecutor janice bledsoe said porter had the opportunity on four or five occasions to save freddie gray. he failed in his responsibility. >> it would not surprise me in

the least if the jury returned convictions against officer porter. i also believe that the defense has raised some very important issues on reasonable doubt that must be resolved. >> reporter: 26-year-old officer william porter is charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault, misconduct and reckless endangerment. during the trial officer porter testified that he asked freddie gray what's wrong. gray said help, help me up. porter put him on the bench, but didn't belt him in or call for a medic. prosecutors accuse porter of lying by testifying freddie gray did not tell him i can't breathe. in the closing arguments for the defense, porter's lawyer joseph murtha said there is an absolute absence of testimony that officer porter acted in an irresponsible manner. murtha says the state has preyed upon the fears that arose after the death of freddie gray, but officer porter is not guilty and

officers. his mother spoke with news 4's mark segraves. >> the autopsy revealed alonzo smith's heart gave out while he was restrained and compression to his torso was a contributing factor. the medical examiner noted that cocaine in smith's system also contributed to his death. it was 4:00 a.m. when police were called to the marbury apartment osgoodhope road last month. when they arrived smith was handcuffed and unresponsive. two private security guards were standing over him. >> a d.c. police officer tried to resuscitate my son, but it failed. >> smith had a 6-year-old son and was engaged to be married. his mother says her son had a few run-ins with police in his past, but was currently working as a teacher and going back to college to finish his degree in social work. >> not only was my son beaten to death. my son was actually tortured to death. there were a lot of contusions,

head traumas and internal injuries and things that i couldn't physically see when i viewed my son's body from head to toe at the funeral parlor. >> that was mark segraves reporting and we did reach out to both the private security firm and the management company for that apartment complex and both declined to comment. no one has been charged in this case and we will explain why coming up new on news 4 at 6:00. >> new tonight, a teenager is facing charges for the stabbing death of a prince george's county man. the body of keith williams was found last night inside a car on tucker road in fort washington. police tell us he'd been stabbed. a 17 yoerld named grayton hawkins is now under arrest. police say williams and hawkins argued before the stabbing. hawkins is charged as an adult with first and second-degree murder. well, he has been hitting up gas stations and he is still on the run after hitting a tenth station over the weekend. the robber has been linked to

falls church, vienna and northwest d.c. the most recent was in richmond. the fbi released these surveillance photos and in each robbery he is weing a baseball cap with the logo jim mckay maryland million day. on the second of two visitation services for a fallen montgomery county police officer will take place this evening. the first service for noah leotta wrapped up an hour ago at the covenant life church in gaithersburg. officer leotta died on thursday. it was one week after he was hit by a suspected drunk driver while he was working on a holiday alcohol task force. his funeral will be held tomorrow. >> holiday toys for local needy children stolen. what's being done to make sure everybody gets a gift. armed robberies across prince george's county and why police believe the gunmen covered a lot of ground in a very short period of time. >> some folks living in greenbelt have a lot to say about the syrian refugee issue.

political standoff over the plan to ban muslims coming to the u.s. is this week's marquee fight in vegas. >> the world continues to watch the droves of syrian refugees fleeing their wartorn countries and the questions continue to mount about whether those refugees should be accepted he in the u.s. here in our region several communities have said they will welcome refugees and as prince george's county bureau chief tells us the city of greenbelt could be next. >> is tartstarted out with a so media post. >> reporter: and then this post turned into a petition on change.org that has now become a movement to welcome syrian refugees to greenbelt. >> this is more about who we are as people in greenbelt. >> reporter: tonight the greenbelt city council is expected to approve a letter to governor larry hogan saying in part we express our strong support for welcoming to our state any and all vetted refugees. >> it would be a small role to play, but it would be a role to

wilkins, news 4. since january the state department says 35 syrians have been settled in maryland in the last five years in maryland, about 6700 refugees have been taken in from 50 different countries. 43% were resettled in baltimore, 34% in montgomery county. 9% were resettled in prince george's county. highly controversial comments about muslims could lead to fireworks as nine presidential candidates gather in vegas tomorrow for the fifth and final gop debate of 2015. donald trump still leading the national polls after proposing a ban on muslim immigrants to the u.s., but new numbers are suggesting a shift may be coming. ted cruz has surged 21% in a poll from the des moines register and the bloomberg news. he now leads trump by ten percentage points in iowa and voters say they are now taking a closer look at him. >> he's a little more polished.

he's been in this arena for quite some time and i think he knows how congress works. >> but ben carson meanwhile, appears to be in a freefall dropping to third place. marco rubio is now in fourth. experts say this could shape up to be a three-way race between cruz, trump and rubio. it's been one year since those express lanes opened on i-95. so are they making an impact on those crammed and crowded roads any better? our transportation reporter adam tuss is here now to break it all down for us in this first year. adam? >> nice to see you, jim. there have been plusses and minuses with the express lane. these lanes are placed on a system when the toll can vary on depending on how much traffic there is. at some point the toll to take the lane from springfield to stafford county has gone well above ten bucks for a one-way trip, but you do get the option to beat the congestion and if you're willing to pay a toll then get 55 miles per hour even

during rush hour. the operator lanes tells us more than 1.1 million customers have used a lane so far and hov trips along the corridor make up as much as 40% of the traffic in that lane. there are some physical challenges to work out still, though, at the end of the lanes in stafford county. there's been a choke point there and that's been a problem so much so that vdot wants to fix that area and one year in for those new express lanes and 395 and 66 are the next areas likely to get these types of high-occupancy toll lanes. back to you. >> all right. thanks, adam. >> you've probably noticed that at the gas pumps prices dropping to levels we haven't seen since 2009. the current national average was two bucks for a gallon of regular and around here the cheapest gas is in virginia where regular is averaging about $1.84. in maryland, it's just over $2 and in d.c., things are a bit more expensive. everything is a bit more expensive here. it's $2.32 a gallon.

a fiery crash sends four people to the hospital and forces four others out of their home. this happened in prince george's county. an suv was speeding and it crashed into the front porch of this house on addison road in fairmont heights. there were no serious injury, but the home is no longer safe to live in. and now your storm team 4 forecast. >> we've got some wet roadways out there across the region and a dreary night for sure, but hey, we're still on the mild side and you can see what's happening down toward the capitol looking okay and we need the rain and this is helpful rain, and you're not going to see a whole lot of it, but 63, the current temperature and look at the winds south at 16 miles an hour and you will see breezy conditions right on through the

rest of the night tonight. 64 leesburg and we got to 68 in d.c. today and that's 2 degrees shy of the record and dulles hit 69 and that did set records. it has been incredibly warm, but here's the change. we've got the showers making their way on through and the heaviest rain right now coming right on through 495 right on down 95 so coming in through the beltway and this is an area right around tyson's corner and right around bethesda and right around through rockville making its way through and this will all move through the region and behind it we're dealing with showers back toward the west and we'll zoom in just a little bit more and down toward 66 and 495. this is always a bad area and notice the orange region and that is where we're seeing heavy rain around idlewood and we will continue to see rain moving through the district and right on through the next few hours. so with those showers you will need the umbrellas for sure and maybe not the biggest umbrella, if you'll be out and about for

the next few hours and most of it ends by 9:00, 10:00 tonight. the wide view shows the storm and this is the big-time storm and normally at this time of year and you'll have snow on the back side and there has not been much snow at all and the system is too warm and it's allowed that warm air to come into our region and even behind it we'll stay on the warm side so here we go tonight around 9:00 and notice some shower activity around the area and right on through midnight and one or two showers and then it all clears out and by tomorrow morning we're starting out with cloud cover across parts of the region and then we get into the sunshine again. 63, d.c. and 64 fredericksburg and 57 in martinsburg. so, yes, a little bit cooler than today and still quite nice for this time of year and that's the way it will be over the next couple of days, too and that will definitely be on the low side and enjoy the weather again tomorrow and we'll start to see

gray's death. there is concern tonight that a not guilty decision could lead to unrest in the city of baltimore. >> it was just eight months ago that businesses were burned and looted there and hundreds were arrested. there's late word tonight that baltimore schools are now trying to help prevent any violence. nbc's jay gray joins us now live with this development. >> reporter: hi there, jim and wendy. what we're hearing is baltimore schools sent home a letter with students warning them that there will be no outbursts after a decision is reached here and if there is they will face consequences according to this letter. they say they understand that students may need to work through some of their feelings and emotions regarding this trial and they plan to give them that opportunity, but say a walkout, any type of demonstration and anything that disrupts the classes will be dealt with swiftly and appropriately. so the school is preparing as is the courthouse in the area here in the downtown area.

barricades are up and there have been if are some time and extra police on hand and we've been told that the chief of police, the commissioner rather of the police force suspended our leave and officers began 12-hour shifts arne the clock through the verdict so they are prepared and calling for calm and they're calling for calm should go things go the wrong way. i'm live outside the courthouse. back to you. no charges will be filed in a domestic dispute. a family member stabbed stephen brown at a home in manassas. the case made headlines because it was only the county's fifth homicide of the year. after looking at all of the details authorities determined it was self-defense. seven armed robberies at seven different locations all in one terrifying day. now police are trying to track down the culprits who pulled guns on people just trying to do their jobs. news 4's pat collins is in

prince george's county where he spoke to two store clerks who had guns pointed at their heads. pat? >> reporter: wendy, a restaurant, a snoeaker store, seven armed robberies in prince george's county, four of them targeting 7-eleven stores. at the one in morningside it got frightening and it got physical. we talked to the victims and we concealed their identity. >> i was scared about my life because they have gun. it was my first time in my life. >> reporter: saturday just before 4:30 a.m. watch the security video. you can see the masked robbers enter the 7-eleven with guns drawn. they spread out through the store as if each one had an assigned task. one gunman goes after the clerk and gets him to open the register. >> he come with the gun on me. it was serious.

then he tell me to open the register. >> the other gunman hunts down a second clerk in the back of the store and holds a gun to his he head. the cash register clerk is brought to the back of the store, as well. both clerks are ordered to the floor where one of the robbers kicks one of the clerks in the head. then the robbers make off with the money and for some reason a large box which is just one bag of chips inside. for these clerks it was a night they will not soon forget. >> i don't sleep. i think about that, so i'm really afraid. >> reporter: those are two lucky men. there was also a robbery at a sneaker store and a new air jordan shoe may have been the motive for that. more on that at 6:00. wendy, back to you. >> pat collins. >> in the investigation into the shootings in san bernardino changes may now be made to the visa vetting process.

in the wake of a report that says the warning signs about syed farook and tashfeen malik were missed. "the new york times" reports malik posted on social media about participating in jihad well before she was approved for her iffiance visa. they will investigate what role social media should play in the process. the fbi is continuing to put together a time line to find out what malik and farook did between the deadly mass shootings and the shootout with police. three years ago today a gunman killed 20 children and six adults in sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. family, relatives and neighbor will come together tonight for an interfaith prayer in honor of those lives lost. today is the first time students were in class on the anniversary. the governor of connecticut ordered all state and u.s. flags flown at half-staff. in newtown, gun violence in

thieves broke in here saturday morning. at least five suspects. police say two are in custody, a juvenile male and a female who have been charged with burglary, too. they went through all of these bags, hundreds of bags looking just for high-end electronic devices like kindles and ipads. the thieves were even using a suitcase to put all of the electronics goods in and in their haste to getaw away and t bags and the kindles they were planning on stealing. right now they're damaged. >> they're 80,000 worth of items we'll purchase. at the end of the day this facility will help 2500 families and 6,000 children. we're still going to do it. we're not going to have a child not have christmas because of something like this. >> reporter: while there was an alarm system here there is no video surveillance of the incident and there were no security guards on duty here. salvation army said they just

organ donor and news 4's meagan fitzgerald tells us today that her family met some of the recipients in northern virginia. >> she was a pretty vibrant character. she had traveled through her college years all over. >> she was 24-year-old stacy farmer. her mother kathy says she was a free spirit and that person who never seemed to meet a stranger. stacy was working as a rafting instructor at harper's per ney west virginia. >> full of life. oh, my gosh, yeah. she was life. >> reporter: on september 15, 2010, her life ended. stacy was riding her bike when she was hit by a car. >> she just didn't time it right and the lights were very, very quick there. >> kathy says the pain of losing a child with so much life to live is indescribable.

cancellation of the parade of lights at the annapolis yacht club and the impact will be felt well beyond that event and how it's affecting the annapolis community. saturday's fire gutted most of the annapolis yacht club's top two floors on the side that provides the best views of the annapolis harbor. a view enjoyed in this spot since 1886 when the club first organized. they modernized the building in 1963, but not enough to have a sprinkler system installed. the club was closed to the public at the time of the fire and the staff inside got out safely. >> it's hard to look at, but what the message that we want to share with our membership and with the community is that we're going to put it back together. >> this afternoon, city and state officials met with the yacht club about ways to streamline the rebuilding process. >> it depends if they're going to tear the building down or rebuild it as is. if they're able to rebuild the building and it's structurally sound we should be able to rebuild it throughout the year.
