house demanding changes on metro. see how the new gm responded to the biggest issues you face every time you ride. and pat lawson muse gets a look inside the local bridal shop that helped start a national trend. businesses marketing to real women with real curves. >> "news4 at 11" starts now. >> good evening. first up at 11:00 tonight, concerns about safety in northern virginia after unsolved murders at two local parks. >> tonight neighbors in alexandria told the police chief they're worried about a spike in gang activity. they want to know if it's safe to take their children to the park. >> news4 shomari stone live now at cora kelly rec center in alexandria, where one man even suggested a citywide suffer tonight. shomari? >> reporter: well, that's right. one man said a curfew is needed here in alexandria. a lot of the families we talked to tell me they moved here because of the quality of life, the parks, the schools. and these two recent murders have them shaken. they spoke to the police chief

behind me at this community center, and he listened to their questions. >> it's a little bit scary. >> reporter: ladonna sanders was born and raised in alexandria. tonight she worries about crime. >> having homicides in our area is something that is new. and we've had two, you know, over a quick short span. and so it is alarming. >> reporter: about a week ago, police found the body of 22-year-old eduardo in the popular four-mile run park. and the body of jose perez found in another park a month earlier. >> the gang problem is a problem for the region. >> reporter: tonight police chief earl cook talked about the murders at a community meeting. he says officers are investigating to see if they're gang-related. >> between the gangs it's less intrusive into the broader community. but is known as threatening. so that's why we want to stop it all. >> reporter: jimmy moreno suggested the city needs to start a curfew. >> some of those kids are actually just running around amok at three income the

morning. >> reporter: chief cook says it's up to the city council to vote on a curfew. >> we live in an urban city. urban cities in america have crime. i don't know of any community that doesn't in the united states. >> reporter: ladonna sanders hopes that the community helps police. >> i want the community to work along with the police to address some of the issues that are impacting our communities. >> reporter: now the police chief also said that he wants to hire an additional 50 officers. he realizes that that's an economic challenge. some of the people i talked to say they plan to bring up the issue to the city council. back to you, doreen. >> shomari stone, thank you. new tonight, baltimore's police commissioner is sending his department a strong message as a jury decides the fate of officer william porter. he is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of freddie gray. in a letter to the department, commissioner kevin davis said in part regardless of the outcome of this trial or any future trial, we refuse to surrender to the low expectations of those who wish to see us fail. we will serve as peacekeepers

for those wishing to exercise their right to protest. we will allow the lawful assembly of those gathered to question the government. we will protect homes, businesses, residents, and police officers from harm and mayhem. and there is nothing that will distract us from being considered anything but the very best in the important days ahead of us. the jury has to decide whether officer porter's actions directly led to gray's death. during closing arguments, the prosecution said porter didn't do enough in the police van where gray died. they say porter failed to buckle up gray's seat belt. and didn't call 911 when gray was in distress. but defense said porter told his superiors in the van, excuse me. they accused the prosecution -- >> they accused the prosecution of playing on the fears of the city in the days after gray's death. tonight family, friends, and colleagues paid their respects to a fallen montgomery county police officer.

the visitation for officer knowia liota was held today in gaithersburg. he died you recall last thursday a week after being hit by a suspected drunk driver. he was working on the holiday drunk driving task force when he was killed. his funeral is being held tomorrow morning at 11:00 at covenant life church in gaithersburg. if you're not attending the surface, you're urged to avoid that area. there will be several road closures and traffic delays. now from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., among caster mill road between shady grove road and woodfield road will only be open to those attending the funeral. the procession will leave the church around 1:15 and travel to the judeian memorial gardens in olney. the procession will take about an hour. all the roads will be closed until about 2:15 in the afternoon. turning to our weather tonight, most of us have gotten rid of the rain, doug. now we get a ride on the roller coaster of temperatures over the next few days? >> and right now we are way up

here temperature-wise across our region. amazing how warm we still are. take a look at the radar. this is over the last six hours here. you can see the rain that came through earlier, moved out very, very quickly. we saw a few showers. and now we're watching this band right here, which will come through. parts of the region over the next few hours. that's actually the difference between the very warm air and the slightly warm air. it's really quite amazing. 67. it's 11:00 at night. and we're 67 degrees right now. 73 currently in virginia beach. we are cooler towards the west. we'll see some of the cooler numbers over the next few days. still mild tomorrow. more rain on the way. some of the rain will be heavy at times. and finally turning cold. i'll show you when. i've got that forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you, doug. metro's new general manager isn't wasting any time, getting a full picture of everything that has a lot of riders frustrated. sometimes downright angry. >> tonight more than 100 people got a chance to let him know exactly what they think needs to be fixed.

news4's jackie bensen joins us live at the cleveland park station with his response. jackie? >> reporter: well, this is an example of what people were talking about. right now metro trains are single tracking between here and woodley park. it was one of the number one complaints this off peak single tracking delays. and it was one of the questions in tonight's forum sponsored by the metro transit riders union. >> from my consistent experience -- >> reporter: they packed the central hall at the martin luther king jr. library downtown. there were long-time metro transit system riders and new riders, all with questions for new general manager paul wiedefeld. >> i take basically transit. >> reporter: heads nodded in agreement when people expressed frustration with metro's real-time trip planning data. >> last night i was in metro center. and when i transferred trains, initially it showed 34 minutes for a train. then it showed 5 minutes, then it showed 34. then it showed 8.

then it showed 34. >> a number of people complained that weekday offpeak single tracking for repairs previously reserved mostly for weekends has become a problem for them. >> this is a new phenomenon. it is horrible. it's frustrating. i run my own business. i don't work 9 to 5. it's cost me tons of money. >> reporter: many commended wiedefeld for his willingness to meet with riders. he also showed a thumbs-up when he reveal head will commute to work daily on metro and will encourage other managers to do the same. >> it's not sort of the wicked glee of making them suffer along with the rest of us. although that is a real benefit. but, but the service will be better when they experience what we go through. >> reporter: and metro's new general manager indicate head is open to future q&a sessions like that. live in northwest, jackie bensen, news4.

and here at the live desk, we're getting our first look at a murder scene in prince george's county. this video just coming in to the newsroom from hyattsville. police responded to a shooting tonight on 53rd place where they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. this is in an area not far from kenilworth avenue. and when the officers arrived a little after 9:00, a man was already dead. right now investigators are trying to figure out who shot him and why. at the live desk, chris lawrence, news4. >> chris, thank you. you heard about this next story first. on the nbc washington app today, the fbi charging a maryland man with supporting isis. federal investigators tell us mohamad elshinawy took thousands of dollars from the terror group. one of his neighbors had surveillance cameras rolling as the feds searched his edgwood, maryland home, looking for any weapons for bomb making materials. investigators say elshinawy knew the money was for terror attacks, but he denied planning any attacks and said he took the

25-year-old yosue joel rios carved it out and had been living in it. it was hidden by plywood and leaves until yesterday when folks walking through the van dyke park wood saw it and called police. inside police found books and papers that looked like homework assignments. it appears rios was studying english. visitors say they understand the danger the cave posed but they feel for rios. >> more power to him. he did something that most people don't do. he actually took a step to change his life and made his own little home where he can study. i wish him the best. >> now rios is charged with destruction of property for digging that hole, and he faces an outstanding traffic warrant from arlington. in the fashion world, curves are all the rage. two local women are riding a wave of success by offering designer style exclusively to the plus-sized bride. pat lawson muse reports from columbia, maryland. >> it's fabulous. >> reporter: the perfect wedding dress after trying on so many.

>> pat lawson muse, news4, columbia. after 65 years with nbc, our dear friend and colleague willard scott is retiring tomorrow. hey, if you have been watching news4 for quite a while, then you probably remember that willard was our weatherman. there he is many years ago. alongside jim vance back in the 1970s. the glory days of tv. hey, vance will be among those looking back at willard's remarkable clear. he flips that around. that's tomorrow on news4 at 6:00. and tomorrow morning the "today" show will pay tribute to willard. al roqueler be down with him on his virginia farm. we're going to miss him. >> we are. >> we see him every day in the halls of the front lawn. >> and this can tell some stories. >> oh, he can. >> about the old days. >> oh, yeah. so we've got some crazy temperatures. when is this going to change? >> it is going to change. and it's going to change over the next couple of days. but it's very rare to be this

warm. but then to be this warm at 11:00, it's 71 right now in quantico. amazing to be this warm. take a look at temperatures outside right now across our region. we've got some wind blowing. those winds are out of the south at 15 miles per hour. and as you know, that southerly component to the wind always helps to keep us warmer. 67 right now. our average high is 47. earlier today, we were at 70 -- or 69 degrees. 66 right now in gaithersburg. still 69 down towards the fredericksburg area. 71 in quantico. just amazing. now tomorrow morning, we will be a little cooler. but still nice and mild. 57 between 5:00 and 8:00. no problem as far as any rain concerned. tomorrow evening between 4:00 and 6:00. no problem as far as the roads are concerned. nothing around the d.c. metro area. but just up towards the north, up around the frederick area, zoom on in to frederick. we can do that. i don't know why it's doing this. but let me do that again. boom. right there. now we're going frederick. and the thurmont area, you have

some heavier showers coming through. these will move right through frederick in the about the next 10 to 15 minutes. you're probably already seeing those. right down towards mt. airy and eventually towards northern montgomery county. i don't think we'll see them in the district. but i would not be surprised to see this line develop as it moves off towards the east. behind that line, we are getting on the cooler side. it's not a lot colder, but it's cooler. showers and temperatures in the low 50, even upper 40s. back around the pittsburgh region. all of this, this storm. the cold air is way up to the north. warm air still coming on in. that's why we've got one more warm day tomorrow. 57 martinsburg to 63 in the city tomorrow. a very mild day across our region on your tuesday. so the impact that the weather will have, obviously very low once again. continued warmth. enjoy it. it is going to be very nice tomorrow. very nice on wednesday too. high temperatures cool. mid- to upper 50s for most of us. we will see plenty of sunshine. but great afternoon. and then we really start to see the changes. 55 on thursday. rain likely. some of that rain will become

performance. first quarter, jeff green. dunks on the entire team. former georgetown hoya had 15 points. started strong. second quarter, wizards down 9. the bright spot tonight. gary neal. he had 24 points off the bench. the wizards trying to make it a game. they're within six. the grizzlies, they control this one the rest of the way. that's matt barnes from the corner. 20 points for him. the grizzlies win this one, 112 to 95. the four-game road trip for the wizards comes to an end on wednesday night in san antonio. let's move on to talk some football for a moment now. there is still one obstacle jay gruden's squad has yet to overcome this season. we know the redskins, how they play when everyone counts them out. how will they respond this week after success? putting together back-to-back solid games is something they haven't done all year long. >> i think that will be a focal point, how we rebound after a victory. i've said that before.
