. happening now as we come on the air, saying good-bye to a fallen officer. i'm barbara harrison with the final farewell to a local officer killed in the line of duty. dozens of schools shut down, hundreds of thousands of students sent home. not once but twice. i'm aaron gilchrest, we learned new information about one of two murderers that happened moments apart from each other. >> we have mild temperatures and a bit of a weekend today, big changes for the weekend. midday starts now. now to that breaking news out of los angeles where all schools are shut down after

receiving a threat. here's what school superintendent just said. >> i think the circumstances in the neighboring san bernardino, i think what has happened in the nation, i think what happened internationally, i as superintendent am not going to take the chance with a life of a student. >> school officials said that the fbi was notified about the threat. it came in electronically targeting several schools. they weren't specific. more than a thousand schools were closed. bus drivers were told not to leave their lots. all schools will be searched, when schools are cleared, classes will resume. that could be as early as tomorrow. stay with new 4 for further developments. right now the funeral for a montgomery county police officer is starting. chopper 4 is live over the covenant life church in gaithersburg. 24-year-old noah leotta will be

buried later today at judean memorial gardens. he died last week after being hit by a suspected drunk driver on rockville pike. kristin wright will join us in about ten minutes from gaithersburg. this is chris gordon live at the trial of william porter. the jury sent two notes with questions to the judge. the defense made two motions, including one for a mistrial and dismissing the charges. first let's start with the demonstrators here. a small group of demonstrators, they say they will be at the courthouse and in the evening. now, as far as the defense motion for a mistrial and dismissing the charges, they cite a letter sent from the baltimore school system yesterday with students warning parents that there could be civil unrest during these jury deliberations, as a result of the verdict warning that if

students skip school they could face disciplinary proceedings. so the defense wanted each juror to be brought in and polled to see if they read that letter and if it would have effect on the thinking. judge barry williams said he trusts the integrity of the jury. he told them every night not to read anything about the case and allowing them to continue with deliberations. along those lines two notes they ask for speakers, a laptop computer so they can hear and see the video and audio evidence. they also asked for magic markers, they didn't get the clerk's list of the exhibits in this case. the judge saying that's not evidence. we'll be updating you if there's any change throughout this hour on new 4 and of course on the nbc washington app. back to you. >> chris, thank you. new developments in the past 30 minutes about one of last night's murders in prince george's county. police tweeted the man who was shot has been identified as 52-year-old lewis montague.

they say he lived along 53rd street where he died. news 4's molette green is at scene of another homicide this one later last night in glend e glendale. molette? >> prince george's county police have not released information about the man who died here in the 9900 block of good luck road. only that it was random and residents are shaken. >> bullet holes. >> reporter: damage left behind near the pool area where a man spent the final moments of his life. neighbors say they heard the shots. >> everybody was shaken up. my daughter was scared, she slept in my room last night. >> i never heard no loud shooting like that. i didn't even know what it was. it's a little scary now.

right now colleagues and loved ones of a fallen police officer are saying good-bye. the funeral just started for montgomery county officer noah leotta. he was hit by a suspected drunk driver almost two weeks ago and died last thursday.

news 4's kristin wright joins us with more now. >> reporter: the service is happening now. it started about 15 minutes ago. we were talking to a police captain with montgomery county police department earlier today. he said there are a lot of things that get easier when you work in law enforcement but this is not one of them. officer noah leotta's body arrived to covenant life church a little while ago. he was welcomed with beautiful fanfare here today. it looked to be uniformed officers th s thas that carriedt into the church. law officers from near and far are here to pay tribute to him. the line of vehicles to the church lasted two hours.

officer leotta was local, he grew up in montgomery county, but it's clear the loss of this young officer is deeply felt in our community and beyond. >> respect many people coming in from close by, but also further away. >> reporter: the montgomery county police chief is supposed to speak at the service this morning as well as county executive ike legget and officer leotta's family members. after the funeral, there will be a procession to the cemetery. the person who hit officer leotta has not been charged, that's pending blood tests. the montgomery county police chief has been advocating and speaking with lawmakers in annapolis to hopefully tougher drunk driving laws in maryland.

this funeral has closed a number of streets in that area. until about 2:00 this afternoon, m muncaster mill road between shady grove and 124 will only be open to those attending the funeral. the procession will leave the church at 1:15 and travel to the judean cemetery. all the roads will be closed until about 2:15 this afternoon. right now a winter storm is dumping snow on colorado and wyoming. >> that's thanks to fresh powder that you can now take a snowmobile through yellowstone national park. the storm has moved out of montana. it left behind nearly a foot of snow in the town of boseman. no snow for us. >> still warm around here. but today is the day you can help people in our area stay warm as the winter gets colder. >> nbc 4 and the salvation army are partnering for the share the

mayor, vincent gray says federal prosecutors owe him an apology for their long investigation of his 2010 campaign for mayor that was ended last week without charges being filed against gray. gray has begun a round of media appearances expressing bitterness over the investigation that many tribute to his 2014 re-election loss. in his first interview with the "new york times," gray said the legal system was not fair to him saying i don't know where the justice was in this long investigation. adding it was time to have an impact on the election. they wanted to bring down the mayor of the district of columbia. prosecutors announced last week tre was insufficient evidence against gray to sustain a criminal investigation. gray is looking to revive his political career. a developing story a live look at the capital for you, where we are awaiting congress to vote on a trillion dollar spending bill. house speaker paul ryan says

a jury is deliberating in baltimore right now, testers are lined up outside the court where william porter is on trial for freddie gray's death. today the defense renewed a motion to throw out the case. it was denied. this is only the first trial coming after gray's death in april which sparked protests and

alexandria, virginia in front of one of the burke & herbert banks where we are collecting those gently used coats. i have not seen you this morning, so hopefully you can get to one of those burke & herman banks. what happens once the coats are collected? >> we get them to our plant, we clean them, we take them up through the deadline, up towards christmas here. there's never too many. we work through christmas do whatever it takes to get the coats out to the people who need them the most. we know it will get cold, right? >> yes, it will. believe me this weekend and then again at the turn of the year. you can do so much to help people who are in need. here's the thing. any coats that you will not take? >> not that i can think of. you know, as long as it has two sleeves, buttons, zippers, we can put them in play. >> all right. so we're collecting coats of any

size. a lot of times you have children's coats. big need for that? >> very large need for children's coats. if you can go through the old closets and go through them. there's a large need with families that need the coats. >> i'm sure you hear that all the time. folks were going through their closets, they found coats that had not been worn and brought them in. i'm sure will you ask folks to bring those coats in. >> yes. we are marketing and looking for them as we go. sometimes it takes that word out on the street and word of mouth to get them in. we get the most coats in late. >> i wanted you to say that this has to be a challenge for everyone out there. in your neighborhood, in your office complex, set the challenge to say who will bring in the most coats. this weekend, it will get cold. go in that closet, grab the coat you need, the ones you don't,

i'm melissa mollet, here are some stories lighting up social media. an 8-year-old girl from new york getting a much deserved special treat. little sapphire terry was badly burned in a house fire that killed her father, sister and her two brothers back in 2013. well, on a christmas message posted on facebook, she asked for christmas cards. and that message went viral. she received thousands of cards

and gifts from around the world. now the 8-year-old is heading on a trip of a lifetime to disney thanks to a non-profit group. she was told at a party with her friends just yesterday. >> running in the rain. i'm also single. so -- >> was supposed to be a short weather segment, but instead a shirtless jogger hit our tv screens and made quite an impact. ethan says after his match-making appearance, his facebook inbox is full of messages now. his page had 1,000 more likes. no date has been set as of yet. and one mother here used the infamous elf on a shelf as an educational tool. courtney bowles posted a picture of her own elf scout, buddy with the broken leg. she said her son has autism and does not understand the rules about not touching buddy.

breaking news out of new york. the new york public school system says they have received an electronic threat targeting several schools. police say any have not considered this a credible threat, so schools have remained open. this happening a couple hours after the los angeles public school system decided to shut down all schools, more than 1,000 of them because of similar threats. the schools right now are being searched, they could open as early as tomorrow. that's the latest from the live des desk. >> if you're headed outside for this afternoon, just know it's
