we're also keeping an eye on baltimore and the chance for more protests. the trial yesterday ended in a mistrial. protesters immediately hit the streets with no major problems. >> huge fires, police in riot gear and looting. we want to get to "news4's" megan mcgrath who's live in baltimore with more. megan, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. while there is disappointment the jurors were not able to reach a verdict, all is quiet as you can see. quiet and calm. we're really not seeing any heightened police presence. since we've been here, i've seen a couple of police cruisers drive through the area. nothing out of the ordinary. last night there were peaceful protests. take a look at the video. they marched to city hall and the neighborhood. there was no trouble.

police kept their distance. there were two arrests earlier in the day that. was really it. no arrests that we're aware of last night. freddie gray died after suffering a severe neck injury. officer william porter was the first of six officers to go on trial, but jurors deadlocked and the judge declared a mistrial. protests are possible. later on today we'll be keeping an eye on things. community activists will say there will not be a repeat of the arrest and shooting we saw following the funeral of freddie gr gray. back to you in the studio. >> thank you, megan. trial will begin immediately. here are four things you need to know. today attorneys for both sides will meet with the judge to decide the possible date for a new trial. we'll alert you to that date through an nbc washington alert. the next to go on trial will be

a suspected gunman is now in custody after a tense standoff. a sheriff's deputy and woman were both shot in carter county. both are expected to recover. police received a call of a drurk man waving a gun around and threatening a neighborhood. he barricaded himself in the house for hours and fired more than 30 rounds at officers j a new challenge to virginia governor terry mcauliffe's plan to ban confederate flag plates. he ordered the confederate logo after the plates back in jeune. he calls the display

walmart helped replace the $20,000 worth of stolen presents. police arrested two juveniles. three other thieves escaped. later in our newscast they'll be live where the gifts will be handed out. >> federal investigators are planning to talk with rahm emanuel about his police department. this after jason van dyke is formally indicted. the spos lite grew on the department after the video of the teen being shot 15 times by an officer was released. prosecutors initially charged van dyke with murder hours before the video of the 2014 shooting was made public. he now face six counts. he was walking down the streets and carrying a nine with a 3-inch blade when he was shot. the release of that video has breathed new life into several families' efforts to bring attention to police shootings of their loved ones. relatives say they've long been skeptical of what happened but the chicago police -- the

chicago police union -- they've long been skeptical of what happened in some of those incidents is what we're being told at this point. the chicago police department union president is worried that all the pressure on authorities to find other cases could result in more lawsuits or charges against officers who say that he was -- they were wrongfully -- rightfully cleared of any wrongdoi wrongdoing. you are waking up to higher interest rate this morning for the first time in a decade. the federal reserve raised a key interest rate by 25 points. if you're planning to take out a $300,000 mortgage, this quarter percent rate hike means you'll pay $530 more a year. the hike indicates the economy significantly recovers after the 2008 collapse. it marngs one year since president obama announced plans

to ease relations with cuba. it's also been a year since the president freed alan gross in a prisoner exchange. these are pictures on his journey home. cuba suspected that he was trying to destabilize its communist regime. gross tells the "washington post" his year back home has been surreal. also this morning we're learning that you may soon be able to book a commercial flight to havana. right now you have to take a charter flight and they may be hard to book. a negotiations may be hard to book. vdot is going to raise the guardrail heads in high-speed areas where the impact in a crash could be most severe. the trinity guardrail system passed an test this year. virginia didn't think those tests were sufficient though and paid for its own. the state test did reveal problems when a car hit a

"the new york times" has obtained 72 work e-mails that he sent or received from his personal e-mail account. carter's press secretary told the "times" that he believed his use of personal e-mails for work was a mistake. hillary clinton came under heavy criticism when she used her personal e-mail account as secretary of state. an airport worker is dead after being sucked into the plane's engine.

the president is headed over to maclean to get a review of what our efforts are. number one, fighting isis, fighting terrorists, but also how we're protecting people here at home and then he's supposed to speak publicly about that. we may get a sense of what he's learning there. on his way to hawaii, the president decided to stop in san bernardino and sit and talk with some of those families that were affected by what happened there. that's happening tomorrow. we learn that some of the buildings at the regent inland building will reopen. some will not for a while. fbi james comey told a conference in new york the isis strategy seems to be inviting small attacks, he called idiot crowd sourcing. small attacks as opposed to isis

like 911. there's a new way to stay away from any potential terror attacks. they added a third level to an existling level. now in addition to elevated, security can issue a bulletin. it will provide developments or trends for any potential threats that. includes any deposit action and what you can do in response. they say the new level is not in response to a specific or credible threat. they've been working on this for months. the fbi said the woman in the san bernardino massacre did not post any suspicious messages online before she was granted a visa. she only sent private messages to syed farook before coming to the u.s. both were killed in a shoot-out with police. they were privately buried in southern california this week. religious leaders gathered
