incident at westfield high school in chantilly in fairfax county. the building was partially evacuated a short while ago. firefighters are trying to clear out smoke. the smoke came from a student's cell phone and that the battery might have been punctured. one person was taken to the hospital. we don't know if it's a student or teacher. we do know they'll be just fine. barbara? >> thank you. developing now on capitol hill, the house votes to pass the spending bill. a huge step in keeping the government running past tuesday. right now the senate is debating the bill and will cast their vote later today. looking live at the white house, it's a busy last day before vacation in a few hours, president obama will host his final press conference of the year. you can watch a special report on nbc 4 at 1:50. then later tonight, he will fly out to san bernardino to

their way from bethesda to this cemetery all for fellow cyclist, a 64-year-old man who died simply riding his bike. >> next group, line up! >> reporter: before sunrise bikers meet in bethesda and ride off in groups of ten along the crescent trail. >> it's first about honoring captain holden and his family. he was passionate cyclist. >> reporter: this two-wheeled kacaravan takes them to the lincoln memorial to escort hold ton his final resting place at arlington national cemetery. the retired navy s.e.a.l. died doing what he loved, cycling. >> it's going to be a somber ride. people are concerned for their safety. they hope tim's memory will activate some changes in the laws. >> reporter: in late august, a car hit holden not far from his

home in bethesda during his morning bike ride on massachusetts avenue. many of the bikerers didn't know him personally but share his passion for cycling and are using his story to raise awareness about safety. >> we assume a certain amount of risk when we get on our bikes. many of us daily. and i guess i felt like it could have been any one of us. he deserved that support. >> reporter: holden's five daughters each received a u.s. flag along with his widow. a special exception made for the retired navy captain and navy s.e.a.l.'s family. he survived the persian gulf war but not this bike ride he took in august near his home. later today on new 4, megan fitzgerald takes you inside arlington national cemetery where he received a full military honor burial.

i'm molette green for new 4. melissa? >> thank you. one person is in the hospital this morning after crash nothing a building at fairfax. you were talking about this a lot this morning this happened on fairfax boulevard and maine avenue. a suv slid off the road and ran into a t mobile building. back in 2013, a man died after crash noing into that same building. no one inside the store was hurt. a college student from herndon has died in an accident at school near philadelphia. michelle buck was hit by a car last night. this video in from up there. the school's president said michelle was well respected by her professors and peers. she was on the dean's list and

the 16-year-old student charged with bringing a load gun into his classroom is back in court this morning. police still don't know how the teen got the gun through the school's metal detectors. no one was hurt in the incident. a traffic alert that might slow you down in virginia tonight. multiple lanes on 395 northbound there will be shut down. kind of in a wave. v-do t v-dot crews are working on a pedestrian bridge. closures start at 9:30 and stay in place until 9:00 tomorrow morning. remember that big explosion? the damage from that explosion is all cleaned up. you might remember when the rocket exploded during a nasa launch in virginia. that happened more than a year ago. it cost $15 million in repairs. nasa says repairs are now finished. it's planning to test launch coming up at that site this

it is a chilly day out there. temperatures in the 40s. we started in the upper 40s to around 50 degrees today. they have since come down a bit. we'll be anywhere in that 40 degree range for a daytime high today. it will feel cooler out there. winds coming out of the northwest. some gusts popping up now across the region. around 20 miles per hour. that means the windchill or the feel-like factor is in the 30s for most of the day. even into the afternoon. winds will still be blustery tomorrow. in fact, we'll have windchills

tomorrow in the upper 20s to the lower 30s. but then the winds will go light on sunday. by monday, tuesday, wednesday we have some chances of some rain coming our way. guys? >> all right, thank you. still no announcement on a new trial for baltimore police officer william porter. attorneys on both sides met with the judge behind closed doors just one day after his trial ended in a hung jury. porter was the first officer go on trial for freddie gray's death. the next trial is scheduled to begin in three months. officer goodson was driving the police van transporting gray. many catholics are looking ahead to next september when mother teresa will become a saint. today pope francis credited her with a second miracle and the vatican confirmed she will be canonized. the official ceremony is likely to happen in september because it's the 19th anniversary of mother teresa's death. the rush is on. hop on it here. why there's such a crunch to get

developing this midday, a 20-year-old was killed in this crash overnight in upper marlboro. marl state police say adedire olanrewaju ososanya died in this head-on crash on largo road. we're working to find out how badly the other driver was hurt. also developing, the chicago police officer charged in the

death of laquan mcdonald is expected to plead not guilty. jason van dyke is back in court today after being indicted on six counts of first degree murder and one count of misconduct. the case did spark protests after the dash cam video was released. van dyke shot mcdonald 16 times within seconds of stepping out of his police car. the former neighbor of the san bernardino shooters could get prison time. court documents reveal enriqueky marquez admitted on facebook that he was involved in terrorism. he's charged with aiding and planning terrorist activities. prosecutors say he bought the two rifles used in the massacre and plotted other terrorist attacks. a bail hearing is set for monday. the documents also detain how farook radicalized marquez.

marquez told the fbi he has and farook planned to throw pipebombs into the library or cafeteria at riverside community college where both had been students. they also planned to attack state route 91 in riverside during the afternoon rush. neither attack was carried out. we did have a few sprinkles out there today, mainly east of i-95, as that frontal system scooted through. so that triggered a few light showers, a few sprinkles on your way in. a lot of cloud cover across the region. we're getting clearing along the shenandoah valley and the blue ridge mountains. we'll have clearing 3:00, 4:00. one thing we'll continue with are going to be the winds. it will be windy into tonight. if you have travel plans overnight tonight, it will be a little on the breezy side. breezy through the day tomorrow with windchills in the 20s and 30s.

her death is asked to call police. if you're sick of slowdowns on the chesapeake bay bridge, and who isn't, consider a new report from the mta. it says traffic will be twice as bad within 25 years. it says the bridge would have to be twice as big to deal with the extra cars expected to be on the road then. the report also said you're safe while driving on the bay bridge, that's because the structure will last for at least the next 50 years. all things "star wars" are trending on social media this morning. "star wars: the force awakens" reached more than 667 million people in the social media world alone. "star wars" ranks fifth in the social media box office, behind fast and furious, minons, the hunger games. a week before the release of furious 7, that film had a social media reach of 865 million. "star wars" reached more than 85 million people on facebook, almost 6 million on twitter. 1 million youtube subscribers. the trailer got 574 million youtube views. here's a spoiler alert. there may be a problem with one of the "star wars" villains. according to techinsider.com, the revenge plan makes no sense. in the october trailer, we see

him telling a melted darth vader helmet that he will finish what he started. but there's no to finish. when darth vader died in 1983's return of the jedi, he was at peace with himself and his son luke. confused? seems other fans were as well. so despite the hype, "star wars" may not be the biggest grossing film ever. look at this according to goldman sachs, it will probably come in third place in the battle of the box office. it is expected to make just under $2 billion, which will land it behind titanic and avatar.

you know we've got some chilly conditions out there. mainly because of the wind. boy, they're gusting anywhere from about 15 to 20 miles per hour. so we have windchills. temperatures are stuck in the 40s. it feels just a bit cooler with the windchills in the 30s.

lebron james went for a loose ball and dove into the wife of pga golfer jason day. ellie day had to be carted out on a stretcher. lebron tweeted his apologies overnight saying he hopes day is okay. a local school principal is out of the jobs. the concerns that local parents raised that led to the change. and caught on camera. a terrifying encounter for a police officer as he was pulled over along the side of a highway.

a former navy s.e.a.l. was laid to rest today at arlington national cemetery. tim holden was blocks away from his house when he was killed riding his bicycle this happened back in august. friends and family and about 200 bicyclists rode on the capital crescent trail to the lincoln memorial. they hope to raise awareness about bike safety and encourage others to share the road in the area. developing on capitol hill, the house votes to pass the $1.1 trillion government spending bill. that will keep the government running past tuesday. the next step happening now, the senate is debating the bill and it's expected to cast their vote later today. today president obama meets with families from the san bernardino terror attacks. >> after assuring americans that the government knows of nothing

bar. he was missing since tuesday night. >> my son was with him. thought he was coming out of the bathroom. he never came out. >> reporter: his family believes mcguinness fell while using the stairs on the back section of the bar. bart has been closed while police investigate. a teen who killed two men during an altercation earlier this year has been convicted of murder. 16-year-old jabar taylor was also con vinvicted of malicious wounding and criminal solicitation. this happened back in june. taylor stabbed three men during the altercation it started when taylor's older brother approached a vehicle in the drive-thru and tried to yank the driver out. he will be sentenced in february. an employee of the district court system in montgomery county is facing charges after being accused of taking inappropriate pictures. israel mangroo was arrested last month after a co-worker accused him of taking the pictures.

mangroo has been charged with illegal visual surveillance and misconduct in office. his case will be trialed in prince george's county. his trial will start late january. they were supposed to be fighting the fire not each other. now a fight between firefighters has led to assault and obstruction fire charges. christopher kelly and miller forcibly forced two other firefighters out of a fire. the fight basically boils down to a turf war. >> have a situation where firefighters are arguing, fighting, tussling over a fire scene is absolutely unacceptable. >> reporter: a new maryland law makes it a felony to assault firefighters or medics while performing their jobs. russian president vladimir putin says donald trump is the absolute leader of the presidential race. putin told reporters yesterday that he welcomed trump's

395 northbound at seminary road. this is something we'll deal with friday night into saturday morning. so kind of an overnight situation here. multiple closures happening because of work on a new pedestrian bridge. these alternating closures lasting until 9:00 a.m. saturday morning. as we zoom in here, let me explain in more detail what we're expecting to happen here. 9:30 friday, that's when the one northbound lane is shutting down. 10:30, the second northbound lane. also travel along seminary road could be impacted and north van dorn street. as far as metro this weekend, actually light on the work. that's good. red line, we are expecting some single tracking. same thing on green line. everybody else, regular weekend service. red line single tracking that will happen between judiciary square, and green line, single tracking between college park and the greenbelt.

accessed a database of hillary clinton donors. kristen welker tells us how else his campaign is responding. >> reporter: the blow to bernie sanders presidential campaign comes on the eve of the next democratic debate. the democratic national committee immediately suspending the campaign's access to critical voter information after accusing it of improperly accessing confidential data from hillary clinton's campaign on wednesday. the sanders campaign acknowledged the security breach to nbc news, and a dnc official said it lasted for about a half hour on wednesday and believes at this point four people accessed the information. the sanders campaign blaming the software vendor for a glitch that temporarily allowed access to the information. telling nbc news that the dnc is relying on an income pent vendor who on more than one occasion has dropped the fire wall between the various democratic candidates data the vendor

breaking news right now from the live desk. the senate has passed a $1.1 trillion government spending bill. we told you earlier in the show how the house passed the bill. this is a live picture of the senate floor. the house passing this same bill earlier today. it goes now to the president who has promised to sign the legislation overwhelmingly, passing the house and senate. back to you. >> well, it is a bit of a breezy day out there. yeah, we've got those winds. i was hoping the camera would be shaking at this point. i saw it earlier. the winds are going on out there. gusts up to about 20, 25 miles per hour throughout the day.

as we go into the afternoon, winds are not going anywhere. temperatures in the 40s. then we'll be around that 40 degree mark tomorrow. still breezy tomorrow, windchills in the 20s and 30s. look at this. we warm up before christmas eve. some rain chances each day next week. thank you. they're supposed to be ugly and tacky, and that's all the fun. today is national ugly sweater day. ugly christmas sweater day. it's celebrated on the third friday of december every year. >> lots of people have them now. a lot of people sharing pictures on social media, there's even a website called nationaluglychristmassweat nationaluglychristmassweaterday. com. i bought this one for my son. he wore it in all sincerity to a party last weekend. >> it's absolutely beautiful. you look terrific. >> thank you very much. yeah. thank you. maybe target will give me the sweater for free now.
