[ indiscernible ] >> thank you. thank you. >> that's during the end of the year news conference today. we are soeeing some cold numbers in the 30s and it's going to be one chilly weekend. i've got your forecast. we have breaking news at the live desk. we have crews on the way to pentagon city hall and arlington police were called to the 16th street side to that mall and they were given a lookout for the getaway car and they caught it and that sparked a high-speed chase that came into the area of the national mall and ultimately ended on third street between e and f. these are picture of the arrest and we don't know what prompted the shots to be fired or if

anyone was hit. shomari stone is headed to the scene and we'll bring you updates as we learn more. >> right now prince george's county police officers are at kentland community center investigating a triple shooting. tracee wilkins is live there with details. >> tracee? >> reporter: this is a very strange shooting and how it all unfolded is unusual. it happened on this playground behind me and police literally took down their crime tape a couple of seconds ago. this happened here at the community park ketland community center. according to park and planning police there was a shooting on this playground and they took off running to the 6700 block of hawthorne where they found help in a house. some folks called an ambulance to pick this guy up. he's believed to be in his early 20s and he was taken to the hospital, after he arrived, two more gunshot victims show up, as well.

all three of them involved in this incident. what police are saying is they believe one of them is also their suspect and they're still looking out for a motive and also exactly why this happened here coming up on news 4 at 5:00, was there a lot starting to go on outside at this rec center and we'll talk to one of the ladies who was outside when the shots were fired. she cannot believe this happened in what is supposed to be a safe space. reporting live in kentland, i'm tracee wilkins. back to you in the studio. > . that forecast on the cold side. >> temperatures will go back up near christmas. >> maybe setting a record on christmas eve and first the weekend. right now very cold temperatures, only 28 in elkins, west virginia and that's the cold air that's settled in and

we are going to see the wind right on through the night tonight in through the day tomorrow. if you're heading out, of course, it's a friday night and a lot of you will be going to dinner or maybe the movies. 38 degrees or some new movie, i think. 37 by 8:00 and 35 by 10:00. that's the temperature, but the windchill will already be in the 20s at this point so make sure you bundle up because we are talking about really frigid numbers early tonight and into tomorrow. windchills will be in the 20s and then as we talked about, we're going to see more record high temperatures as we go into next week. it's amazing the roller coaster that we're on. i've got your forecast at about 4:15. i'm julie carey in woodbridge where a vigil is planned tomorrow night to honor a popular softball player who was shot and killed by her boyfriend. he's charged with involuntary

manslaughter. 45-year-old brittany costa was an avid adult league softball and volleyball player. when she wasn't working or taking classes at george mason university. earlier this week she was shot and killed. 22-year-old david williams tells investigators he thought his gun was empty when he pointed it at her and pulled the trigger. coming up on news 4 at 5:00, i'll tell you how friends are coping with this sudden loss and why they are skeptical about the boyfriend's story. in woodbridge, i'm julie carey, news 4 sdwloo a person had to be taken to a hospital after crashing into a building in fairfax. this happened on fairfax boulevard and main avenue. the suv hit the bottom of a t-mobile building. hundreds at people are at arlington national cemetery to say good-bye to a navy s.e.a.l. among the guests were hundreds of cyclists from all over the area around 8:00 this morning that's when it started. bikers, many of whom didn't know

tim holden turned out in show of support. they led the procession to arlington national cemetery where sailors carried a casket. he received full military honors. news 4 spoke to holden's younger brother thor is money. >> it was a beautiful ceremony and everything went extremely well and i can't tell you how much it meant to my family to see the people that were here for thor is money. >> holden was a highly decorated navy s.e.a.l. the car who struck holden was issued traffic citations and prosecutors say it was a horrible accident, but the driver's actions were not criminal. parents say one local principal ignored them at his own peril and officials had dismissed him from a popular school in greenbelt. parents started filing complaints against the teacher when they heard he spanked students at the immersion school.

principal nasir abi who allegedly ignored those complaints and on thursday prince george's county officials confirmed they let him go. the teacher in question is now teaching in montgomery county. >> and first at 4:00, we're awaiting word from the white house on when the president will sign the budget package to avoid a government shutdown. the budget passed both houses of congress earlier today and brings more than a trillion dollars in new spending along with $680 billion in tax cuts over the next decade. before president obama heads off for the holidays he held his last news conference of the year and made it clear he won't be a lame duck president. >> in short, for all of the very real progress america's made over the past several years we have unfinished business and i plan to do everything i can with every minute of every day that i have left as president to deliver on behalf of the american people. >> it ranged on several topics from cuba and climate change.

we'll dive into what the president said in about ten minutes. >> democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders' campaign has been disciplined by his own party and the emcee says his campaign improperly accessed rival hillary clinton's database. a software glitch allowed them to briefly view that confidential information. sanders' campaign manager said they fired the low-level staffer who sought. the dnc shut down access to his own voter database until the campaign provides a full explanation. they're asking for proof that they've deleted all of the clinton data they accessed. clinton will get a chance to question sanders face-to-face tomorrow night in new hampshire and we'll be watching to see if the voter data breach comes up. they will square off with martin o'malley in the last democratic debate of the year. it's a day many catholics have been waiting for years. pope francis has signed off on the miracle needed to clear

snow in the high spots of west virginia and that could bring a few flakes to the high spot of west rirj virj and areas of western maryland and west virginia. we may see a few snowflakes in the shenandoah valley. tomorrow frigid, 20 to 25 degrees and what it will feel like. the coldest day of the season so far, but you know what? temperatures will be going way up again. we'll show you that record warmth in the seven day in just a few. winter officially starts next week, but today's blast of cold air is giving us a taste of what's in store. the temperatures have been all over the place and some parts of the country are already seeing snow.

>> those are things we've not needed so far and here we are closs to christmas and it's been warm. and now definitely the coldest we've seen in december and the wind is the factor and winds out of the northwest at 14 miles per hour and that puts our windchill in the mid-30s. a very cold night and these are the actual temperatures down to 37 already. mart insburg and 44 in fredericksburg and you know we're in for a cold friday night and it will be out as chris was talking about. no umbrellas needed and you're not going to see any rain, but there is some snow just back to the west and there's the rain pushing off and look at this system trying to move in across the region and it's not going to bring us anything other than a few clouds, but what you can see, and you will see the snow forming and a couple of inches into portions of garrett county and yeah, some snow, at least close to us and up toward buffalo, you get the lake-effect

snow of the season and 43 in our area -- i don't know why i said denver. 39 in mart insburg and 44 in fredericksburg and it will be breezy. it will be cold and windchills will start off in the 20s and climb to about 30, 32 degrees. so what to wear? she's got the idea. it's the winter coat, it's the scarf and the hat during the day tomorrow and maybe the gloves, too. it really is what we're talking about with this cold air as it moves in and the impact forecast and we can deal with the cold and with the breeze, that's really what's going to be the factor and winds gusting up to 20 to potentially 25 or 30 miles an hour at times. we get much better and better quickly. back to 46 on sunday with sunshine. 53 on monday and put away the winter coats again and get out the short sleeve shirts again and we're back to 60 by tuesday and we're predict being the record high temperature and the warmest christmas eve we've ever

mother teresa is one step closer to being declared a saint. today the vatican attributed the second miracle to the nun the next step in the process. the ceremony will take place the first week in september to coincide with the anniversary of her death. nbc's bill neely reports now from london. >> reporter: in life she received the highest honors like the nobel peace prize, now 18 years after her death, mother teresa has been recognized as a repeated miracle worker and next year she will become a saint. she was, of course, as a saint of the gutters for her work with the poor in the indian slums of

calcutta. pope john paul fast tracked her for beatification and the last step to sainthood and it was controversial, an indian woman claimed a picture of mother teresa cured her of cancer and the pope admitted it was a miracle. a second miracle has been by pope francis. she believed suffering was a gift, but tens of millions revered her and she often polled as one of the most admired women in the world and our pope francis has set the stage for a ceremony probably next september. her beatification attracted people to rome proclaiming her saint teresa will poll her similar number, the highlight, perhaps of the catholic church's special jubilee year. back to you. we'll stay in the uk because the duke and duchess of cambridge are getting ready t l

breaking news right now at 4:30, police chased and arrested two men who are accused of firing shots in a parking garage of the pentagon city mall. the men were arrested by the third street tunnel or nearby after police chased them over the 14th street bridge. our shomari stone is on the way to the mall and we'll have more coming up at 5:00. are you traveling this weekend? we're focusing on travel now. you can see that traffic is moving there through the city and meanwhile, we've had some cloud cover across the area today and there's another ripple that's going to be making its way east producing some snow. yes, i said snow showers in some of the high spots in the mountains and let's take a look at storm team 4 radar and it's 31 degrees in morgantown and they're forecasting snow showers

about a half inch and same deal around tosberg and right down to areas like snowshoe as well as elkins, west virginia and there's ridgewood and there's light snow west of there right now. take a look at the airports, d.c., dulles all in the green and atlanta, georgia, also in the green and there are delays rid now in new york city, laguardia and flying this weekend, make sure you call ahead and we're not expecting weather systems in the east and that's the pacific northwest. 28 degrees early tomorrow morning when you head out the door and it will be a frigid one and the windchill temperatures will be in the low 20s and maybe even teens to the west and some of the snow finally ending saturday afternoon heading to the ohio valley for your drive around south and low 30s to the north, and low 40s to the south and chilly there and back to just the jackets. we'll have more than that coming up in just a few.

♪ i'm darcy spencer along route 202 in upper marlboro where a horrific crash claimed the life of a young college student last night who had just returned home for winter break. the victim was aditaray. he was just 20 years old. family friends tell me he was returning home to his parent's home around 10:30. that's when maryland state police say the driver of a cadillac lost control of his car, crossed the center line and struck the man head-on and. coming up on news 4 at 5:00, we'll hear from a woman who knew this young man and she'll explain why she feels like she has lost her own son. >> we're just getting some troubling new statistics about drug use in this country. drugs and overdoses have hit an all-time high. the center for disease control

said more than 47,000 people died from overdoses died since last year. deaths were across the board, men, women, multiple races and ages. maryland, virginia and west virginia were among the states that saw the biggest jumps in overdose deaths. >> now first at 4:00 there is a new push to ban anyone under the age of 18 to use tanning beds. it's part of the ongoing government effort linked to skin cancer linked to tanning beds. the food and drug administration announced their new proposal today and they want mandatory consent forms for everyone acknowledging the risk of indoor tanning. dermatologist and medical groups say they're seeing ayn increased rate of skin cancer in teens and people in their early 20s. >> we commonly see women in their 20s with melanoma and the one factor they're doing differently is almost every one of those young women has spent extensive time in a tanning bed. >> 23 states already have laws

banning minors from using tanning beds. the fda will take public comment on its proposal for 90 days before finalizing the new rules. >> it sounds like a scene from the movie "footloose," but playing out for real at a school in new hampshire. the principal has banned all school dances because the way students are dancing has become too sexual. several events have been stopped or canceled because of sexually suggestive dancing. >> there's a lot of people that don't feel proud about the way our dances are conducted here. >> every dancing is inappropriate for a while and then it becomes part of the past. >> reporter: some students actually supported the changes. the school is still going to put it on the junior and senior proms. >> a big honor this afternoon for a local art teacher, eric stroshine in dale city and won an annual white house christmas

card competition connected with squadron one. her husband is a gunnery sergeant. it represents the squadron's relationship with the president. last week the couple presented it to mr. obama and received a framed copy. at first, the students were skeptical. >> when i first told them about it they were, like, okay. yeah. they kind of almost don't believe you. once they saw the proof of it happening they definitely liked it and they wanted to see the card and asked about how it was made and things like that. so i think it was a good learning experience for the students also. stroshine says her husband has talked to her about competing again next year. >> chances are you've got a stuffed animal in your home that's seen some better days. maybe the dog got a hold of it and it's gotten grimy over the years. there's a woman in north carolina who has made it her mission to clean and repair those furry friends and as susana black reports when she faced a personal crisis recently, the stuffed animals helped her.

weeks. the windchill will be a major factor early tomorrow morning. here is the future windchill on saturday at 5:00 a.m. windchill, 19. gaithersburg and 21, and everybody still in the lower 20s and starting off very cold. if you have games early tomorrow morning and maybe the kids have games, bundle up for sure and the winds will be a factor today. still 34, d.c. and 33 culpeper and only 39 in gaithersburg and a very cold afternoon and it will get even colder tomorrow night. if you're going out on your saturday night. a lot of holiday parties and activity going on. 29 in frederick, and 29 d.c. and 31 in fredericksburg. >> cold saturday, the average high temperature will be below normal for the first time this season and then look what happens, we go way above and we're talking about record high temperatures. veronica has the extended forecast and she'll show you how warm it will get coming up in a couple of minutes.

this is the time of year thieves zero in on homes and steal packages right off the front porch. >> a thief was caught red-handed and security cameras caught him swiping packages two different times. it shows the thief walking up on the porch as if he belonged there to do business, perhaps. he looks around, grabs the package and takes off. police are still looking for that guy. hoverboards are on a lot of wish lists and what you need ton before you gift one coming up. and the video that can be -- a little hard to watch. lebron james going for a loose ball, crashes into the wife of

first at 4:00, loyola university has banned hoverboards on all of its maryland campuses until further notice. the rule will go into effect tomorrow december 19th and it's due to safety concerns regarding the lithium batteries used in hoverboards. the consumer product safety commission is accelerating an inspection after tallying 12 specific incidents of them catching fire. right now the federal government is investigating what sparked those fire, but one consumer group examined the hoverboards themselves and erika gonzalez has the results. >> hoverboards are on many wish lists and consumer rors took a

look at three models and their price points and whether they're all that different. >> celebrities helped make electronic scooters this year's hottest holiday gift with some models costing their 1500 and up, as with lots of popular gadget, manufacturers are making similar devices sold under dozens of names with various prices. that makes it tough to know exactly what it is you're buying. consumer reports bought three boards are at different prices to compare. the swagway for $600 and the chicsmart s1 for $830. engineer bernie dietrich took them apart to compare. though some of the components are different, they're nearly identical. they all used the same type of batteries. >> they're all powered by lithium ion batteries and a type of battery that has caused fire, but those types of instances are rare. >> all of the scooters consumer

reports checked out ride the same way using subtle shifts and it takes some getting used to, but all riders caught on pretty quickly. >> the body movements are easy to control at low speed, but when you get going faster and you hit a bump and it causes you to shift your balance you can very easily lose control as he learned during his speed test wiping out on a seemingly smooth service. >> it went that way and i was going that way, so -- >> and these youtube videos will confirm why consumer reports recommend wearing a helmet, pads and guards while riding any electric schooler. >> it's painful to watch, right? the consumer product safety commission received 39 reports of emergency room visits related to scooters including more than a dozen fractures. while traveling over the holidays, be aware several airlines and airports have banned them altogether.

and now your storm team 4 forecast. well, as you get outside this weekend, traveling, it is going to be cold, but it is going to be dry and we're not seeing weather system anies here's a look at the weekend travel and areas like i-95 and any big weather system if you're going to be jumping out of a plain in the pacific northwest and for the most part it's not a system that will start organizing until the early part of next week. so wake up weather, 28 to 36, breezy and this is the first time we've used the word frigid and you'll use it first thing tomorrow. so make sure you and the kids are dressed up, bundled up and ready to go, scarf and hat, and even the fluffs they need. >> that is snow in some of the hot spots and bluegrass area and morgantown, and maybe as far

east as frostsburg and the first part of the day tomorrow and we'll see nothing, but sunshine here and it will be a breezy day for us throughout the day tomorrow and i don't think the winds will settle until once the sun sets and at lunchtime even tomorrow. 27 to 32 and ittel feel like we're below freezing with that temperature at 31 degrees by 5:00 and it's still cold even when the wind settles and the next change you'll notice is sunday morning, as the wind does decrease, temperatures will start getting into the upper 30s on sunday and 40 degrees by 10:00 a.m. and feeling better and it's not going to be as windy. windchills in the 20s and 43 the temperature, and we're 46 and the best day out of the weekend on sunday and as we get into next week our temperatures will start going right back up when we start seeing record warmth coming our way for next week. there's your 60 degrees on

>> lebron james accidentally injured a fan during last night's game in cleveland, but this afternoon she's out of the hospital and doing okay. lebron was chasing a loose ball and all 250 pounds of him came crashing down on ellie day and paramedics took her out on a stretcher and drove her to the hospital. lebron spoke with day as they were treating her courtside and later sent an apology and get well wishes. >> a colorado man claims police used excessive force during an arrest and now he's paralyzed. they're now on desk duty while authorities investigate. the man's career as an mma fighter is over. >> i can't feel below my waist. i can't move my feet. i can't stand on my own. >> donovan duran is recovering at university hospital in aurora from injuries he says was caused

by police. a family member reportedly called police after durant got drunk and when they arrived they took him to the medical center where officers beat him up as they got out of the car. >> they tackled me on the floor and they put all of their pressure on top of me with their knees and they put their knee in my back. >> reporter: duran says he was strapped to a hospital gurney and placed in a guarded room. he says officers ignored his cries for help after complaining about neck pain and even claims the doctor didn't believe him. >> he said get up. i told him i can't move. i don't know what's wrong with me, so he picked me up from behind, and stood me up and he let go and i dropped straight to the floor. >> duran was flown to university hospital where he is getting treatment for a spinal cord injury which will likely end this mma miter's career. >> they say i may never walk again. i was a professional fighter. i loved doing it.

i was always athletic, and now i've got to learn -- i have a different battle ahead of me. >> we feel that excessive force was applied to this young man. >> he is representing duran in what's bound to be a civil lawsuit. his client was fine and walking prior to police detaining him. >> he was using all four of his appendages and then a few hours later he's paralyzed from the waist down, so we feel there's something wrong with the police department in la junta. >> after they launched an investigation, two officers were placed on administrative duty with pay. duran said one of the officers involve side sergeant vince frager. >> criminal charges are also not filed. meanwhile, on the second floor of university hospital. >> my prayer is they get, you know, justice, that this doesn't happen to someone else. >> that was eric ross reporting. there is security video, but it's still unclear if it will be made public.

duran's attorney says the officers were wearing body cameras. news 4 at 5:00 starts now with chris and wendy. news 4 at 5:00 begins with breaking news. shots fired at pentagon city mall and the police chased suspects all of the way into the district. >> the video of the arrest is coming in. it was a wild day in a mall at the height of the busy holiday shopping season. shomari stone has been hustling to get to the story. >> shomari? >> reporter: we were the first on the scene and the first thing i want to let you know is that everything is fine here at pentagon mall and you're welcome to come here and shop and there were anxious moments, moments ago and i'm here at the entrance. let me move out of the way and a lot of people go away and at 3:00 today, a man was exiting, trying to use his credit card to get out and just like all of us do. for some reason the card was not working and he told the person

behind him to please back up. there were words exchanged. let's roll some video and that's when police say a passenger in that second car stepped out of his car, went to the trunk and allegedly pulled out a gun and fired some shots in the air and that gun then took off. a responding officer was able to find that car, the suspect's vehicle and there was a chase into d.c. on northbound 395. the cops say they allegedly saw the passenger throw a gun out. police, by the way, were able to recover that gun. again, as you say at the top of the show that chase went into d.c. and that's when d.c. police were able to help out on third and f street northwest and the driver and passenger jumped out and there was a foot chase and police were able to arrest them without any problems and let see just see their picture right now. police are also in the process of trying to track down the witnesses. let's come back out here live. there were a lot of folks who
