the softball season and she played many nights a week and on many prince william county teams. they are also keeping a very close eye on the ongoing investigation into her death. whether it was an adult softball league game or playing volleyball. brittany koster was the one who lifted spirits on the team. >> always upbeat. always smiling. she is always there for somebody. >> our motto is all team, all family. >> they got word something terrible had happened. koster had been shot and killed by her boyfriend at her rappahannock home. he is charged with involuntary manslaughter. he thought the gun was empty when he pointed it at koster and pulled the trigger. >> how she passed is very hard for everybody to understand. you don't ever pick up a gun and point it at anybody.

>> koster's friends say they are skeptical of the boyfriend's story. they hope investigators continue to dig into the couple's relationship. close friend samantha dodson said koster was trying to break things off. >> i do think that he tried to scare her into staying with him. >> now these friends just hope tomorrow night's vigil will show brittany koster's family how much she meant. >> she was the most selfless person i think i've ever met in my whole entire life, and i want everyone to know how many people she touched how many hearts that she touched. >> reporter: friends say days before brittany koster died she was texting them with excitement about a brand new job. she was also on the verge of graduating from george mason university. when i join you at 6:00, the charges they hope will be coming in the future in this case and the role they may play in that. back to you now in the studio. >> thanks, julie.

what started as a dispute in an apology ended up with a bus driver being stabbed. the driver said a guy got on to the bus and bumped him with the stroller. when the guy pointed it out the rider told him he just got out of jail and didn't care about going back. police say the passenger spit on the tire and pulled out a tile cutter. the driver ended up needing stitches after he got cut and officers were able to track down and arrest tosberg. gun fire at a play growth fund. prince george's county police are investigating a triple shooting in kentland. bureau chief, tracee wilkins is live there with the latest. >> reporter: this was a shootout on the playground and two guns involved. so far police say they have recovered neither, but they have three people who have been shot and are recovering from gunshot wounds and they're trying to figure out what happened here. >> it sounded like maybe four or five different shots. i didn't think they were shots

at first. >> reporter: this woman who did not want to be identified was standing outside the community center when shots were fired and a group of men took off running. i was outside on the phone, and i saw two guys and i didn't know -- i didn't know what was going on. >> turns out there was an exchange of gun fire on the playground just steps away from this rec center and nothing, you know, happened while they were here. >> maryland park police are trying to figure out what sparked the shooting and what prompted one of the gunshot victims to run two blocks away from the home in the 6700 block of hawthorne where he got help. he was transported to the prince george's county, and shortly after that victim made it to the hospital two more gunshot victims from the same incident showed up and they drove themselves there. they believe one of the three is the suspect. they are still trying to figure out a motive. there was a lot happening here

each ate a brownie suspected of containing marijuana. it happened on november 25th at 9:00 in the morning. the students were taken to an area hospital and the resource officer investigated and 18-year-old william kesar who is a senior at blair now faces two felonies. >> he was charged with distribution of a controlled and dangerous substance and distribution of a controlled and dangerous substance on school property. >> the was selling it for $15. >> and you know that how? >> because i was a part of the -- one of the girl -- both of the girls who fell sick were my friends. >> reporter: i contacted the school system and this afternoon a spokesman sent me an email with this statement. this matter was immediately referred to police who investigated and charged the student. we've also addressed it as a disciplinary matter with the students involved. william case ar's lawyer tells

kim holden was a highly decorated navy s.e.a.l. and an avid cyclist. >> he was killed earlier this year and hit by a car while biking near his home in bethesda. hundreds of cyclists in our area took one last somber ride to escort his hearse to arlington national cemetery. news 4 has more on how he is being remembered. >> reporter: when a veteran lives a life time, it can be harder to say good-bye. timothy holden, a decorated war hero and persian gulf war veteran was laid to rest with full military honors. hundreds of family members

looked on. he died less than a mile away from home in august. holden was hit by a car while cycling on massachusetts avenue in bethesda. he was heading to meet his daughter for coffee. >> tim's younger brother ray says the last several months haven't been easy and waiting for the funeral has been especially difficult. >> it's been four months since the accident. it's a long time to wait for burial. >> reporter: but he says this moment was worth the wait. >> during the traditional flag folding ceremony, tim's wife and five daughters were presented with the american flag. arlington national cemetery officials say typically only the veteran's spouse received the flag, but they granted a waiver. officials say this is rare. the holden family says they're grateful for this gesture. for ray, it was closure. ♪ ♪ >> a chance to properly say

thank you and good-bye. reporting in arlington, meagan fitzgerald, news 4. >> one of the most celebrated religious figures of the 20th century will become a saint. today the vatican officially attributed a second miracle to mother teresa. that clears the way for the catholic church to canonize her. the miracles attributed to her happened after her death in 1997 and both involve the otherwise unexplained healing of people who had deadly diseases after prayers were made to mother teresa. the nun also won the nobel peace prize and global acclaim for her work with the sick and the poor throughout her lifetime. no word yet on when her canonization will be celebrating. the diocese of arlington released a statement calling her an example of gentle strength and unwavering commitment to uphold the dignity of every human person. >> she certainly left her mark.

>> we have some breaking news in a story that news 4 has been tracking since october. a 21-year-old man is now charged in a home invasion and a rape that shook the district's hill east neighborhood. >> his name is antoine pitts and for the past two months he's been held in prince george's county on an unrelated charge. we have the latest from d.c. superior court. >> reporter: chris, antoine pifts was supposed to be in jail. he was supposed to be in jail. news 4 has learned that pitt, the man now charge in the brutal rape that happened in the 1800 block of 18 southeast, the hill east area should have been on gps ankle monitor probation at that time for a 2013 armed robbery, but he had apparently cut off the device weeks beforehand. in court today antoine pitt's attorney asked he be released on

darcy? >> reporter: wendy, this family was too distraught to speak to us on camera and they are grieving and in a state of shock over the loss of their son, but a family friend does confirm that this young man was a student at morgan state university and he was here for driving on route 202 last night when he was killed. that victim is abedire ososanya. he was a junior at morgan state. he was driving around 10:30 last night when the driver of a cadillac lost control of his car and struck him head-on. he died at the scene. he was a short distance away from his parent's house. again, they are grieving today. melissa green knew this young man through her daughter. they both attended largo high school and she said he was like a son to her. >> i don't have a son and it feels like my son has passed. he has touched so many lives and i'm just hurting.

college in pennsylvania. michelle buck is from herndon, virginia. she attended urinas college just outside of philadelphia. she was in her sophomore year at that school and police say someone hit her near the campus. one professor is remembering her as a quiet, unassuming, diligent and respectful student. she was on the dean's list and also played in the string ensemble. chipotle is not commenting after a new lawsuit was filed against them today. a fairfax county school. >> reporter: there's a new wing that's been added and with it there is a new field coming out back. parents, especially those involved with the pta have been pleased with the improvements and they've also been vigilant about them. >> we've looked at adhesive and paint. >> reporter: it's what's going in the field that has them worried. >> the field that will have an artificial turf will have a crumb rubber substance. >> ground up car tires. >> reporter: they've only heard about it being used here for a short time and they cite a yale university study and they say they've come across some troubling terms associated with the substance. >> it's noxious gasses, carcinogens and tarodogens. >> reporter: they've taken their concerns to the fairfax county school system and asked them to delay the installation for a few months. they're aware of the parents' concerns and will conduct

dermatology says the rick of developing the deadly form of skin cancer melanoma rises after a visit to the tanning salon. it has risen from the 1970s. >> we're commonly seeing women in their 20s of melanoma and almost every one of those young women have spent extensive time in a tanning bed. >> the fda plan would have adults sign forms acknowledging the health risks before using a tanning bed. salon owners will have 90 days to comment on the proposed rules. erica edwards, nbc news. loyola university has banned hoverboards on all campuses until further notice and that goes into effect tomorrow december 19th. it's due to the safety concerns about the lithium batteries used in the boards. the consumer product safety commission is investigating into these devices after 12 specific
