back up. words were exchanged and a passenger in the other car pulled out a gun andvvu fired ss in the air and the driver took off. a police officer found the suspect's car and then there was a chase northbound on 395 into d.c. bless s police say the driver threw the gun out of the window. the pursuit ended at third and f street northwest. the driver and passenger jumped out of the car and tried to run away and investigators say police caught them and back out here live and they found they found the gun thrown out of the car. if you planned on coming here after work today and after picking up your kids after day care you're welcome to go in and everything is fine, but right now police are also looking for the witnesses that were here and some of them called 911 after hearing those shots fired and also police are looking for the driver who was trying to use his credit card and got into the exchange. the words exchange with the car

behind him. live in arlington, i'm shomari stone, news 4. >> stop fighting or i'll kill you. according to documents that's what antoine pitts told the victim of a home invasion. he's been levelled in prince george's county on an unrelated charge. pitts should have been under gps monitoring at the time of the attack and he apparently cut the device off. >> investigators are trying to piece together what happened and who is to blame? this happened outside the kentland community center in landover maryland today. three people were shot. tracee wilkins is live with the investigation. >> reporter: we're talking about a shootout on a playground where three people were injured and in the midst of this one of the workers from the rec center ran toward the shooting. >> when gunshots were fired at

10:30 this morning just steps away from the kentland center. she did the opposite of what most would do. >> i walked outside to make sure it wasn't anyone i knew. yeah. i mean, because at the end of the day it's part of our family, the whole community. >> reporter: she runs the after-care program here and while children don't arrive until after 2:00 p.m. it could have been one of her former students. that's what she feared. >> do you think you knew any of the victims? >> it's possible. >> reporter: police are trying to figure out what sparked the shooting and what prompted one of the gunshot victims to run two blocks. >> he was transported to the prince george's hospital center and that was the first victim that we're aware of. two more gunshot victims from the same incident showed up. police believe one of the three

is the suspect. they're still trying to figure out a motive. unfortunately, chasing groups of men away from the playground has become part of antonette's job. >> when the kids are here we go out to talk to the guys and we ask them to wait until we finish playing with the kids. >> reporter: the police are saying all of the men involved in this incident were in their early 20s. >> reporting live in kentland, i'm tracee wilkins. back to you live in the studio. >> thank you. friends of of a young woodbridge woman who was shot and killed by her boyfriend are hoping stiffer charges will soon be filed against him and they have evidence they hope will help. bureau chief julie carey joins us from fitser stadium where this vigil is going to take place. julie? >> friends and family will gather around there around second base tomorrow and that's where brittany koster played on multiple teams and all of those

friends will be here to pay tribute. they are also keeping a close eye on the ongoing investigation into her death. >> she was just, you know, a girl that everybody loves. >> that's one of many glowing descriptions friends of have 21-year-old brittany koster whether it was in adult softball league games or playing volleyball. koster was the one who lifted spirits on the team. >> always upbeat and always smiling. >> our motto is our team our family. >> reporter: her family got word something terrible had happened. koster had been shot and killed by her boyfriend at his rappahannock county home. 22-year-old derek williams is charged with involuntary manslaughter. he thought the gun was empty when he pointed it at koster and pulled the trigger. >> how she passed is -- very hard for everybody to understand. you don't ever pick up a gun and point it at anybody.

>> reporter: koster's friends say they are skeptical of the boyfriend's story. close friend samantha dodson said koster was trying to break things off and she has text messages koster shared she'd like to show to investigators. >> from the messages i've personally seen i think he put fear in her. >> the victims hope williams may face stiffer charges. >> i hope he gets charged with murder. >> reporter: right now friends are focused on a softball field vigil. >> she's the most selfless person i think i've ever met in my whole entire life, and i want everybody to know how many people that she touched, how many hearts that she touched. >> reporter: friends also say brittany koster was very excited to start a new job soon. she was also ready to wrap up her studies at george mason university. they have set up a go fund me page to help her family with expenses and you want to take a look at that. go to the nbc washington app and

on the field. >> and the president's advisers say next year he'll be out on the campaign trail to try and help another democrat win the white house. incidentally, since he's going on vacation, he has a 16-day vacation, he's making one stop in about two hours to meet the families of the victims of the san bernardino attack. reporting live on capitol hill, edward lawrence, back to you, doreen. >> the friend and former neighbor of the san bernardino killers will be in court on monday. enrique marquez supplied the weapons that were used in the attack that day and that announcement comes as they ask about the visa vetting process that allowed tashfeen malik to enter the u.s. a senate committee wants to know why the department of homeland security didn't adopt a proposal in 2011 that would have allowed social media accounts to be used to vet applicants. the fbi has said there is no evidence that malik or syed farook publicly talked about jihad before entering the u.s.

a very cold evening across our region and a very cold afternoon. the later it got we saw more cloud cover and we saw more wind, too. the windchill has been a big factor. take a look at the numbers across the mid atlantic and these are not numbers that we have seen so far this season and 45 in new york and 37 in wilkes bu wilkesbury, pennsylvania. extreme, you can't use that word this time of year, but we are seeing much colder temperatures than we've seen the last few days. 38 by 6:00. 35 by 10:00 and the windchill tonight will get into the 20s and it's already there in some looks and it will be quite chilly especially when we have that breeze. even colder tomorrow. we'll see windchills in the 20s for much of the day during the day and watch out for that and a very cold day tomorrow and then we get rid of the cold and we bring right back in the record high temperatures and we're talking about record highs right around christmas and i'll see

you back here in 16 minutes. >> full military honors for a highly decorated navy s.e.a.l. tim holden was killed after a driver hit him while he was biking near his bethesda home. his family was given a special gesture during the ceremony today. news 4's meagan fitzgerald has more on the strong show of support from hundreds of cyclists in our area. >> reporter: when hundreds of cyclists come together to honor a man many have never met, it sends a message. >> we had a fallen rider, and i just want to show my support for that fallen rider. >> reporter: these riders hope captain tim holden's death reminds people of the importance of staying alert on the road. holden is a decorated navy s.e.a.l. and persian war vet. his family says he could have died in war, but instead his life ended on massachusetts avenue in bethesda. in august, he was riding his bike when montgomery county

police said a driver veered to the side of the road striking him from behind. criminal charges were never filed. he was greeted by his fellow sailors who carried the casket to its final refsting place. just file adi federal lawsuit against the democratic national committee for access to a database that holds records about potential voters. the dnc blocked the access this week after a fire wall glitch allowed sanders' campaign staff to improperly search and save information about supporters of the hillary clinton campaign. the sanders campaign is accusing the dnc of playing favorites. >> the leadership of the democratic national committee is attempting to undermine our campaign. in this case it looks like they are trying to help the clinton campaign. >> the clinton campaign that accessed proprietary information about the sanders campaign. you can be darn sure, understandably that his supporters would expect that we would take the exact same action. >> the sanders campaign has fired its national data director, but notes the dnc is responsible for security on that database. so now we bring in "meet the press" moderator chuck todd.

>> what does it mean to us? >> well, here's the thing, why is it public? it's public because someone wanted to make it public. what you have here, sanders' campaign got caught. they're right. the dnc made the error and someone said they left the front door open and they went in and they ate cookies. they trespassed and they're sitting there going whoa, whoa, we got punished and now they're trying to make lemonade out of a lemon and they're trying to get their entire establishment credential and it does go over the fact that it's the sanders campaign and knowing they shouldn't have been able to do it. >> i'm sorry, i think everybody looks silly here. it's clear someone leaked this story to embarrass the sanders campaign, and apparently they were dealing with this over the last day or so privately.

>> reporter: the 20-year-old died in this violent head-on collision in route 202 in upper marlboro thursday night. he had just come home for the holiday break. maryland state police are investigating the crash. they say it was around 10:30 when the driver of a cadillac going south on 202 lost control, crossed the center line and struck ososany ahead-on. she knew him through her daughter. >> god called one of his angels home and he was read ed for one of his angels and he called him home. that's the only way i can accept it. >> he was a popular student studying marketing at morgan state. he was elected mr. junior class by his classmates and he was a member of the omega psi phi fraternity. they issued a statement that says in part, he had, in fact, completed nearly all of his course work toward graduation and for his life to be cut short when he was so close to

achieving that which he had worked so hard for is heart wrenching. he was driving to his parent's home which was a short distance from the crash scene. green says he was like a son to her. >> i don't have a son, and it feels like my son has passed. he has touched so many lives and i'm just hurting. we're just shocked. >> reporter: maryland state police say the driver of the cadillac was taken to the hospital, but he is expected to survive. the state's attorney's office in prince george's county will determine if any charges are filed and we still don't know what caused that driver to lose control. in upper marlboro, darcy spencer, news 4. it began with the bump of a stroller and then it turned violent. what we are learning about the moments that left a metro bus driver recovering from stab wounds. >> a fight over a new turf field in northern virginia. the new concerns about safety as parents try to keep the

and it's a cold one. we actually have some cold air across the area and i asked someone on my facebook page are you happy about the cold? the cold is great, but get rid of the wind. that wind continuing to give us windchills in the 20s and 30s. 40 degrees, look at that wind, northwest at 17 gusting over 25 miles an hour. current temperatures in the area in the 30s to the north and

west. look at the windchill down to 31 in d.c. and only 25 in martinsburg and you know it will be a chilly night. make sure you bundle up and we haven't needed the winter coats and you won't need the umbrellas at all over the next couple of days. the storm system that brought us the rain is moving out and behind it what's going on here and we have snow over the mountains of west virginia and they'll quickly fade away so i'm not worried about that at all and it will be a dry night tonight and we're not going to see flurries or anything like that, but back to the west, a couple of storm systems, but that is it. if you're traveling, there are no problems during the day tomorrow. driving locally breezy, cold and dry. 95, 81, 70 and quiet all around and if you're doing any air travel the only problem spot is the pacific northwest. so not even across most of the

manager admits to embezzling more than $1 million from her workplace to help feed an addiction to shopping. >> not only is she facing prison time now, but her crime led to a huge shake-up at the credit union. scott macfarlane has the story and a story you will only see on news 4. >> reporter: donna jennings didn't just work at the winchester community credit union. she was the manager in charge of accounting and reporting to the board of directors. in federal court in alexandria today jennings admitted ripping the ple off. embezzling more than $1 million between 2001 and 2014 buecause f an addiction to shopping. she also admitted creating a fictitious loan using collateral owned by one of her customers without that customer's knowledge. a loan from which she later withdrew tens of thousands to pay off her credit cards and she

acknowledged breaking credit union rules making a large loan to herself and taking out large advances. >> she has acknowledged her guilt and she wants me to convey her sense of remorse to anyone who has suffered any consequences from this and her deepest apologies. >> reporter: the winchester community federal credit union is no more. the old branch sits empty. the bank had just $13 million in holdings, froms koourts said and they said jennings's embezzlement substantially jeopardized the safety, soundness and solvency of the credit union. it has merged with the apple federal credit union. maximum prison time for donna jennings, 30 years, though she's expected to get less after pleading guilty and she's started making restitution. donna jennings is facing more than just prison time and also a $1 million fine and she'll find out her punishment when she returns for her sentencing in april. in alexandria, scott macfarlane.

>> we got new body camera i hav havedio. it shows a d.c. officer putting leg restraints on smith. chief cathy lanier told us additional restraints were put on smith because officers believed he was high on pcp. this is the second body camera video of this incident to be released this week. both videos show officers administering cpr for more than five minutes. smith's death was ruled a homicide. no one has been charged in this case. >> a metro bus driver who was stabbed this week says a dispute over an apology led to the attack. a driver told police a man bumped him with a stroller as he got on to the bus when the driver pointed it out the rider robert vossberg said he had just gotten out of jail and didn't care about going back. >> vossberg spat on the driver and then slashed the driver with a tile cutter and ran.

he was arrested nearby and the driver is going to be okay. a student in montgomery county is in trouble for bringing marijuana brownies to school. as news 4's chris gordon reports two students got sick. >> reporter: the brownies allegedly mixed with marijuana were sold for $15 each, two female students here at blair high school went to see the nurse after they each ate one. it was the morning of november 25th. this student says they're her closest friends. >> and i went to see them in the nurse's office and they were going crazy, speaking a whole other language and i said oh, my gosh, this is really serious. the two students had elevated heart rates and were taken to an area hospital. a senior, 18-year-old william case ar was arrested and now faces two felony charges, distribution of a controlled substance and distribution of a controlled substance on school property. montgomery county sent news 4 a

the last addition to a local football field has some parents raising concerns about a possible cancer risk for their children. news 4's derek ward explains the worries about the new turf that's going in at a fairfax county school and how the school district is responding. the new field at westgate elementary school is almost complete, but it won't be finished until this is put down. it's crumb rubber, commonly added to artificial turf and forms a kind of cushion, but it's amounted to tons of worry for parent at westgate. >> it's not something i want them exposed to on a regular basis. >> it's ground up tire and based on what he's learned from a yale study and other sources on the subject it can lead to some problems. >> noxious gasses, carcinogens and taronogens and mutogens. >> they're aware of the parent's concerns and they will conduct frequent air quality tests and will share those results with the community, but they say they're planning to go ahead

tires on young children over an extended period of time. one independent toxicologist and consultant also told nbc that the process used to make tires ensures other chemicals and carcinogens stay trapped in the rubber. loyola has banned hoverboards on all of its maryland campuses. that rule goes into effect tomorrow. the school says it's due to safety concerns regarding the lithium batteries. there have been at least 12 incidents of hoverboards catching fire. last month the hoverboard caught fire while it was charging at a home in gaithersburg and it caused thousands of dollars in damages. >> even as the federal government investigates, hoverboards were sold this holiday season and consumer reports evaluated three of the devices and they range in price from $400 to $800. the ride was similar on all of them and so was the construction and the battery life, but an enneer learned the hard way that while it's easy to get the hang of this, it is?
