news 4 today starts now. feel the freeze. you're going to want to see this the feel-like temperatures outside are below freezing. timing out how long the cold is sticking around. >> then shoelaces, yes, how police used those to track down a man charged in a case that terrorized a local neighborhood. we do want to begin with breaking news out of virginia. one person is dead after a car accident in fairfax county. this happened around 11:00 last night on the westbound lanes of franconia-springfield parkway just past i-95. the driver died at the scene. a second person was taken to the fairfax hospital and is expected to be okay. right now there is no word on

that's out in oakland, way out in garrett county. for today you'll need a warm coat, warm hat, sunglasses because of bright sunshine throughout the day. storm team 4 radar not showing any snow around. we did have a few snow flurries flying through the air late last night around the blueridge but they are long gone now. winter is back. a look at how long it will be hanging around when i join you a little bit later. a man accused of rape and this morning there's new evidence of missed opportunities to put him behind bars. >> 21-year-old antoine pitt made his first appearance in court yesterday, more than two months ä;qder police say he attacked a young mother in d.c.'s hill east neighborhood. this morning, we know part of what helped police catch him and his distinctive shoelaces. yes, shoelaces. jackie bensen has the new details you'll hear only on news 4. 21-year-old antoine pitt was arrested september 30th in a

bathroom at the martin luther king jr. library, suspected selling synthetic drugs and with a tempered gps monitoring ankle bracelet in his backpack. a prosecutor asked the judge to keep pitt behind bars but was released and ordered to commit no further crimes. efforts were made to locate pitt, two weeks later in the 1800 block of a street southeast, a young mother working from home looked up to see a man standing in her living room. he began to sexually assault her, saying stop fighting or i'll kill you. the charging documents against pitt noted the victim's injuries included facial fractures that required surgery, bruising to her face, neck, body and limbs. by phone, d.c. council member charles allen said strengthening penalties for certain types of gps tampering might be warranted. >> cutting off, removing it in that fashion is much more

egregious than simply letting the battery die out. >> pitt is also accused of anotherç crime after removing e gps ankle bracelet. on october 6th burglary on michigan avenue. a woman woke up to find a man standing in her room. she said, hello. he said i will get out of here. she told the police the man left with her tote bag containing her phone, wallet and university i.d. >> jackie bensen reporting there. in court yesterday, both victims noted that the suspect's distinctive gray shoes with orange shoelaces. >> police are trying to figure out who shot three people at a community center in prince george's county. this happened yesterday at the ketlin community center in landover. all three victims are being treated at prince george's hospital center. no arrests have been made and the maryland national capital park police department is investigating the shooting. police say it may have been

road rage that led to a shooting outside of the pentagon city mall. police say a man had trouble using his credit card at the gate, at the mall's parking garage on 15th street. he asked the driver behind him to back up. that's when they exchanged wores. police spotted the suspect's car and chased him into d.c., taking two men into custody near the third street tunnel. police recovered a gun thrown during the chase. they're still looking for the driver who was stuck at the gate. prince william county police looks for an armed robbery suspect in two separate incidents. the robber parentally held up a sunoco gas station on wellington road last night and possibly connected with another robbery. he was wearing a white or gray hoodie, jeans and a ski mask. a state of emergency is in place in san bernardino county.

california governor jerry brown made that announcement yesterday. the state department of public health will step in to help the county health division until it gets back to normal staffing level. earlier this month, a couple opened fire at a local social services center. 14 people were killed. and president obama is meeting privately with the families of victims in the terrorist attack. a husband and wife killed 14 people in the shooting earlier this month and more than 20 others were hurt. the president is making the stop on his way to hawaii for his annual holiday vacation. he said meeting with the loved ones of those who were fatally shot two weeks ago was a remainder of what's good in this country. angie, before the president headed off to hawaii for the holidays, the 1$1.8 trillion del will fund the government through september 2016. the president praised congress for passing the deal.ç congress still needs to promote job growth and increased wages.

time right now is 6:06. happening today, the democratic presidential candidates are expected to debate in new hampshire. all eyes will likely be on hillary clinton and how she chooses to address bernie sanders' data breach. they are suing the dnc for suspending its access to the data base after it was learned they improperly accessed voter information compiled by clinton's campaign. sanders went on a famous rant about clinton's e-mail scandal in the previous debate. >> are you one of those people, the ones who waited until today to cross off your christmas list? how retailers are putting the super in super saturday which could mean you save a lot of money. >> yes. >> the controversial topic that fairfax county leaders are doing a 180 on that could impact your child's school. >> several lanes on i-395 north shut down in virginia.

shopping is upon us and retailers are hoping for a strong finish. shopper track says this saturday often called super saturday typically ranks second in terms of retailers in-store revenue. black friday still number one. monday and the day after christmas ranks in the top ten. the final week of december can account for 15% of holiday sales. retailers are doing what they can to win shoppers final holiday dollars, online and in store. kohl's is staying open for 170 straight hours through christmas eve. best buy has extended hours leading up to christmas and automatic free two-day shipping for online orders made by tuesday morning. target is offering 10% off gift cards on december 20th and delivery in time for christmas for online orders placed by the 21st. >> certainly amazon, again, is having a spectacular season. but if you look at the list of

the top four retailers online, you do notice that walmart and target are having a very successful season. >> reporter: but unseasonably warm weather in much of the country is hitting retail hard this year, taking a big bite out of winter-related goods, pushing retailers to discount deeper. looking at more than 150,000 shopper receipts, consumer market research company info scout says as a result consumers are buying more this holiday season and it's costing them less. >> in order to make up the difference, retailers are having to sell more units at a lower price. you sawç walmart do this with wrangler jeans for $10 a pair. many retailers are offering promotions. >> reporter: as the clock ticks toward christmas, retailers will settle for just winning the sale, almost regardless of what it costs. courtney reagan, cnbc. happening today, the prince

all right. a look at decision 2016. now the third democratic debate gets under way tonight up in new hampshire. there's a war brewing between the two top candidates starting with bernie sanders. his camp is now suing the democratic national committee so as to regain access to information about his own supporters. the dnc suspended his campaign's access to all of that data after some of his staffers allegedly exploited a software error and took confidential information collected by the hillary clinton campaign. at least one sanders staffer has been fired. the chair of the dny who supported clinton in the past is fighting accusations that she's trying to cripple sanders campaign f. the shoe were on the other foot and the clinton campaign had accessed sanders campaign data inappropriately,

sanders supporters and the sanders campaign would expect me to react in the exact same way. >> do you have any response? >> clinton's campaign manager put it bluntly and said the sanders campaign, quote, stole their data. a lot of back and forth going on there. coming up tomorrow on "meet the press," chuck todd will talk to some of the leading gop candidates about the fight for the top of the race. >> maryland governor larry hogan is heading to the garden state this weekend. the republican leader will make his first campaign appearance for new jersey governor chris christie in manchester. the pair of republicans governing blue states have swapped advice and support in the last few months. christie has worn a live green hogan strong bracelet since hogan was diagnosed with nonhodgkin's lymphoma back in

june. hogue is now in remission. a woman was recorded making anti-islamic slurs and throwing coffee at a muslim man. she's on administrative leave from her job at the california department of corrections and rehabilitation. police say she interrupted a group of men praying in a park earlier thisç month. this could affect those named for confederate generals. under the new policy, the board also can change a name where some other compelling need exists. community members have been trying to change the names of jeff stewart, robert e. lee and a third school that honors a past superintendent, that would be w.t. woodson in fairfax. the campaign to change the schools' names began in june after a deadly shooting at a church in charleston, south carolina. hover boards are still being sold despite a federal investigation. consumer reports evaluated three of the devices ranging in price from $400 to $800. the ride was similar, so was the

>> is that the zamboni? >> no. >> that's the flag flapping in a cold wind this morning in front of nbc 4. i just posted that video on twitter. that video captures the feel of the morning as the winds have been gusting. these numbers are the wind gusts. we've had gusts to 25, 30 miles an hour. gusts at ocean city, 38 miles an hour. these are the wind chills. this is what it feels like. it feels like it's in the low to mid-20s around much of the region with those winds. here's some more numbers. these are the temperatures. the current temperatures are at or a little bit below freezing. so december now finally, like the winter months, all around the region it's at or below freezing. in the mountains it's in the teens in far western maryland. it is near the 20s to near 30 degrees right now. dress accordingly. warm coat, warm hat, sunglasses and gloves. maub a warm scarf as well, as you head out the door to get

holiday shopping in. the latest reports, 90% of people have yet to get their holiday shopping done. it will feel wintry by noontime2 in the upper 30s and low 40s between 1:00 and 3:00 and back down to near 40 by sunset, which today is at 4:49. if you're going out tonight between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m., the wind will be diminished, hovering near 40. late in the evening when you're heading back home, late evening, midnight, it should be back into the upper 30s. by dawn sunday, down to near 30 degrees. afternoon highs into the mid-40s. that's the average high for this time of year. this is sort of what december actually should -- normally feels like today and tomorrow. lighter wind on sunday and sunny. that increase in clouds monday into the mid-50s. late monday night into tuesday, that's when we might get a few scattered sprinkles. not a lot of rain like we had a couple days ago. just light showers coming through. look how mild. tuesday near 60 degrees, mid-60s

at the presidential mansion friday. the stormtroopers posed among the christmas decorations on the white house lawn. all the snowmen were there as well. >> do you think they ran a background check t. took months to get clearance. >> people seemed like they like it. >> there's references to the older movies and people are seeming to really enjoy that. all right. the fda is making a move to ban anyone under the age of 18 from using tanning beds. >> it says using them at a young age dramatically increases the risk of skin cancer. there are almost 75,000 new cases of melanoma reported this year. erica hill has more on the fdarc proposal. >> reporter: as skin cancer rates rise dramatically in the u.s., there's an urgent focus on a known cause, indoor tanning beds.

>> we commonly see women in their 20s with melanoma. almost every one of those young women has spent extensive time in a tanning bed. >> reporter: the fda wants to bar all minors under 18 from using indoor tanning beds and would require adults to sign a consent form acknowledging the risks. a number of states already regulate access for minors while 13 states in the district of columbia ban the practice entirely for those under 18. the tanning association says the decision should be left up to parents. >> dr. sarnoff sees this daily. >> i wish we could shut down the tanning industry as a whole. i think these ultraviolet boxes, it's a proven carcinogen. >> reporter: at 24, melissa cohen was diagnosed with early stage melanoma. >> i was definitely shocked. >> reporter: two years later, this medical student sees tanning in a much different light.

that's coming in a few minutes. new video of a man assaulted by former loudoun county deputy john gregory. he assaulted lyle grenoble, the man you see right here. grenoble was arrested for public intoxication and was later acquitted. here is the incident right there that got the deputy in trouble as they arrived to the loudoun county jail. >> you understand me? >> i'm in the sallyport of the jail. i need some assistance please. >> any more problems out of you? >> i didn't do anything. >> on the way to the jail, the deputy stops the car to loosen grenoble's handcuffs after he complained they were too tight. in court, deputy gregory argued grenoble squared off with him,

gave him a threatening look and made an aggressive move. the loudoun county sheriff said he fired gregory after an independent investigation. the former deputy is appealing his conviction. developing right now, the u.s. military says it is investigating an american air strike that may have inadvertently killed iraqi soldiers. this happened near the city of fallujah. they are investigating one of several air strikes it conducted friday against islamic state targets. they're not sure how many people may have been killed. the iraqis initially reported that ten people lost their lives. new details in a case that's gotten lots of attention in our area. a man pleads guilty to calling in threats against metro stations buses and drains. coleman's threat involved explosive materials. he's also known as kid cole from his appearance on mtv's

"catfish." the plea calls for up to 27 months. sentencing is set for february. it was a dispute over an apology that led to a man getting stabbed. when the driver pointed it out, the rider, robert vosburg apparently said he just had gotten out of jail andç didn't care about going back. a short time later, vosburg spat on the driver and slashed the driver with a tile cutter and ran off. he was arrested not far from the scene. the driver is expected to be okay. a student who took a gun to wilson high school pleaded guilty. he pled to one count of possession of unregistered firearm and one count of possession of an unregistered ammunition. police still don't know how the 16-year-old got that gun through the school's metal detectors in northwest. no one was hurt in the incident. he will be sentenced next month. the search is still on for a man who stabbed and tried to rob

a woman outside a montgomery county mall. he attacked her in a parking lot outside macy's at lakeforest mall in gaithersburg. the woman was in her 60s. the man came up, demanded money. when she refused. he pushed her into the car and stabbed her multiple times and then took off. the woman has been treated and released from the hospital. some parents are concerned about the chemicals inside of it. the field was used as -- the field will use a crumb rubber turf. they're worried about the reported cancer risks associated with that substance. the parents are asking school officials to delay the plans but the school is moving ahead with the project. fairfax county public schools put out a statement that says the turf is safe and there's nothing to prove crumb rubber causes any health risks. >> so 157.5 tons of chemicals

you're watching news 4 today. welcome back. this morning, a teen is facing two felonies for selling brownies laced with marijuana to classmates. it happened at montgomery blair high school just before thanksgiving. high school senior william keysar sold those brownies to two female classmates. they made the girls sick. the browns nies are being testeo make sure they weren't laced with something other than marijuana. their annual field trip to deliver letters to st. nick was called off by the school's principal, after one mom raised concerns about what she called best practices. the mom argued that public schools should respect an focus on all religions during the holiday season. yikes. we are waking up to near

worked pretty hard on. a picture perfect blended family. that's wa they were until one january day this year when denise madison came home to a scene that would change her family's life forever. >> her husband of just six months was murdered. and for the first time since that tragedy, the grieving mom spoke about the sudden loss that was followed by a great joy no one saw coming. the stars shine the brightest when the backdrop is a really, really dark sky. there isn't a moment i take for granted. i sit and cuddle with the kids on the couch and i -- i mean, if i could, i'd count their eyel h eyelashes. >> reporter: the little things have become the biggest blessings for denise madison after losing the love of her life. in january, denise arrived at her ashburn home to a terrific scene. she watched as her new husband of just six months was shot and

killed by her ex-husband, min wen over a custody dispute. messages of hope fill the home where denise lost so much. >> as we look to the things that are not seen but the things that are unseen. >> reporter: she raids her bible every day and says it is faith that constantly peels her off the floor. >> i know where he is. there's comfort in it but there's immense hope, you know. and that is why we're okay, because i know that this isn't the end of the story. >> reporter: a story of grief that recently gave way for great joy. in september, denise gave birth to a baby girl. >> corey means chosen, renee means çreborn and madison mean gift. >> reporter: a daughter named after a father she'll never know. it was shortly after corey died that denise found out she was expecting the couple's first child. >> he see him every time i look at her. i thought that every time i

looked at her and i saw him, it was going to only make me sad. there is sadness but it's overpowered by joy and love and thankfulness. >> reporter: with the new addition, the blended family proudly calls themselves the mattison eight. it's a houseful of tremendous love, but still this time of year is especially tough. >> when he sat back after everybody opened all the presents and they're playing with their toys and i remember looking over at him and he was sitting there taking it all in. >> reporter: a giving spirit, inspiring purpose from pain with a message of hope for the hurting. >> it's not move on. there's no moving on but there is keep moving. >> min wen pleaded guilty to first degree murder and he'll be sentenced in april. it may be warmer than average in the northeast but it
