right now at 6:00, the coldest air of the season. veronica is telling us just how much the temperatures will fall tonight. and breaking right now, wisconsin mall evacuated and police trying to figure out if there's a threat. and an off-duty police officer shoots and kills a suspect in anne arundel county. we'll tell you what the suspect had in his hand. news4 at 6:00 starts now. off the top at 6:00, we know you felt it. storm team 4 gave you the heads up and today the cold blast hit our region hard. but after such a cold day, just how cold is it going to get tonight? meteorologist veronica johnson joins us with that answer.

vj? >> well, we know, erica, with today's cold was the wind. that's the one thing that made it feel so much colder. wind chill temperatures today in the 30s, as we topped out a temperature of 45 degrees. and 30 was the start this morning. our coldest day since going all the way back to february, march. but, of course, the wind. and that wind is decreasing 30 degrees. the wind chills today. later tonight it will feel like we're in the 20s. so still going down. if you're going to be out, bundle up. you're going to need everything from the hat, the warm coat, the gloves, the scarves as well. but again, it's less wind for tomorrow. so it's going to be feeling better. and then much better as we get into next week, and at least that's how you look at it. some folks still think that christmas is 70-degree warmth go together in this area. i'll have more on that and when we're cooling down coming up. >> thanks, vj. breaking "news now" from wisconsin on a very busy shopping day. a madison area mall had to be evacuated after a shooting.

this is a picture from outside the east town mall. just moments ago, police said a group of young men got into a fight. one of them shot a 19-year-old in the leg. they say this was not an active shooter or terrorism situation. police say they are still looking for the suspect right now, and the mall is closed at this hour. an off-duty police officer shot and killed a suspect after the suspect tried to rob the officer with a toy gun. this happened just before 2:00 this morning on homewood road, and anne arundel county police say the baltimore officer had just gotten off work when the suspect came up, pointed the toy gun at him and asked for the officer's wallet. police say the officer thought the gun was real. >> one of those pieces of evidence was a toy gun. that was very realistic. looked like a black revolver. that's believed to be what the suspect pointed at the officer. when he announced the robbery and that's why the officer shot

him. >> police believe the suspect was homeless. several violent robberies, and an assault. tonight d.c. police say those crimes were committed by the same man. his image captured by surveillance cameras, and police need help finding him. this is where darcy spencer is live on capitol hill on more of who police are looking for. darcy? >> reporter: erica, this is definitely a scary situation. we just spoke to an a & c who represents this area. she says d.c. police should make this case a top priority. one of the cases happened right where i'm standing, the 200 block of eighth street and southeast here on capitol hill. not only involved a robbery but also an attempted sexual assault. let's show you a map of the locations of these violent incidents. robberies and attempted sexual assault. one of them again here in the 200 block of 8th street in southeast. another location just a short distance from her in the 900 block of east capitol street in northeast washington.

now the third location is less than one mile from here, in the 1300 block of ives place. again, that's in southeast. d.c. police put out three surveillance videos in connection with these cases. they are trying to identify a person of interest shown in these. the first shows an unidentified metro station. that's where the man was walking in, using the escalator, and the surveillance video also shows him at a subway restaurant. police are not saying exactly when these videos were taken. or exactly where they were taken. but they are part of this case. there's also a third video showing him again at a 7-eleven. he is holding some papers in his hand, as well as a cell phone, and speaking to someone on a cell phone. all of these cases happened within one week, starting just before thanksgiving. and all the crimes have happened right around 9:00 or 10:00 at night. again, a very active case for d.c. police. anyone who may recognize the man in any of these videos is asked

to call d.c. police. erika, back to you. >> darcy spencer live on capitol hill. thank you very much. a crash killed an 18-year-old last night. and fairfax county police say speed may have been a factor. driving on the westbound lanes of the springfie park way when lost control of his car and slammed into several trees. the 17-year-old went to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. if you have any information, you are asked to call police. the u.s.-led air strike that killed a number of iraqi soldiers is the result of mistakes on both sides. that is the word today from defense secretary ash carter, as he offered condolences to the iraqis. carter spoke to reporters during a persian gulf visit today. the defense chief did not say how many soldiers were killed. but according to iraq's defense minister, ten soldiers died when war planes attacked the

isis-controlled city of fallujah friday. well, the democrats' turn to debate the issues tonight. hillary clinton, bernie sanders and martin o'malley will face off in new hampshire. of people will be paying close attention to the dynamic between clinton and sanders after a sanders staffer gained access to clinton voter data. it's still not clear how exactly that happened. but the dnc quickly shut down sanders' access to all voter data. sanders' campaign called the move an effort to guarantee a clinton victory. >> if the shoe were on the other foot and the clinton campaign had accessed sanders' campaign data inappropriately, sanders supporters and the sanders campaign would expect me to react in the exact same way, which i would do. >> sanders sued the dnc, but overnight, the committee agreed to once again allow the sanders' campaign to access voter data. funeral arrangements have been set for a missing teen found dead in adams morgan

earlier this week. paul mcginnis jr.'s body was found in an alley off 18th street. his uncle says the vcu student disappeared after celebrating his cousin's birthday on tuesday night. they believe mcginnis fell while using the stairs in the back of the bar. the funeral will be tuesday at st. john newman catholic church. d.c. police are continuing their investigation into this case. the family of a young d.c. reporter killed in a shootout this year is helping spread some cheer to other families of violent crimes. charnice milton's family attended this party for the children of murder victims. they dressed up as mr. and mrs. clause and kids enjoyed a holiday feast. the party just wrapped up in northeast. police have not made any arrests in milton's murder. if you'll remember, she was killed back in may as gunfire erupted while she was changing

tonight there's a massive search for the perfect match that can save the live of an 11-year-old girl in maryland. today people went out to the darns town presbyterian church for a bone marrow drive. they hope somebody will be a match for natasha, who has aplastic anemia. the sixth grader has been out of school and has had intensive treatment but desperately needs a transplant. her mother talked about the outpouring of support they have received at today's event. >> there are people coming far and wide, people that don't know us, don't know darnestown but they're coming from laurel and ashburn and pennsylvania and washington, d.c. and, of course, the darnestown community has come out in this full force. >> the family has a registry of about 500 potential life-savers for natasha and other patients. you can open our nbc washington app for ways that you can help. just search bone marrow.

you're watching news4 at 6:00. it's one of the top trending stories on social media. groups threatening to stay away from liberty university. they're concerned about gun safety after president jerry fallwell urged students to get conceal/carry licenses. the virginia high school league said it's questioning the use of liberty's athletic facilities for a state football championship. some schools have also threatened to boycott the state debate championship in april. in a statement, fallwell said he wasn't surprised there were more anti second amendment commends comments coming from northern virginia. 50,000 toys for 25,000 deserving children in prince george's county today. police helped distribute all those gifts from the annual toys for tots program. and as news4's derrick ward reports, it's all about giving back to the community. >> reporter: it's a time of year when goodwill comes in brightly colored packages or has wheels.

about giving back. >> reporter: efforts like this don't happen without work. there are no elves doing the paperwork that comes to managing the distribution of some 50,000 toys. but the behind the scenes efforts pay off in little smiles brought on by big hearts. >> that's what you do for the community. >> the community is really coming together. and i'm very happy. >> reporter: in prince george's county, derrick ward, news4. >> you notice everybody in derrick's story had the big puffy coats on. you guys weren't lying when you were talking about the wind chills today. >> exactly. our coldest start in d.c. since late february, early march. now here we go. yes, another cold one for us tonight, as temperatures continue to drop. but less wind chill for the day tomorrow. we start with wake-up weather. here it is, cold, the light wind 27 to 32, the actual temperatures. i want to show you the wind chills, too, what it's going to feel like early on in the day. 27 leesburg. d.c., too. toward fredericksburg. and as the day unfolds, not too bad. look at that. around 40 to 42 degrees across the area.

so the wind, less and light. driving lolley tomorrow, it's going to be cold. of lots of sunshine. get your sunglasses out. i-68, i-81. some high clouds moving in during the late afternoon hours. and then if you're traveling, give you more cautionary rocky mountain snow. that system is the one that's going to be moving eastward, giving us our next chance of rain next week. 44 degrees the high tomorrow. 46 in d.c. but look at all that sunshine across the area. and, again, a light wind. a better day for getting outside. maybe putting up the lights, if you haven't had a chance to. we go traveling across the nation now. you can see some of those clouds building off to the west. ohio down toward areas of arkansas, chilly there. there's the mountain snow that's going to start building in areas like denver. oh, it's cold in the pacific northwest. again, the same system that heads this way for tuesday, giving us some showers. but wanted to show you monday first. this is a look at monday. all the high clouds that are going to be moving into the area. mostly cloudy, just about every day this week, with the

exception of friday. which we're going to get to in a moment. that, of course, is christmas day. right now monday is looking dry. the next change you're really going to notice around here, i think, is tuesday. tuesday morning. fog at 6:00 a.m. we're mild at 50 degrees. we'll start picking up a few showers by 8:00, 9:00 a.m. for the morning rush. that change, look at that, mild in the morning, instead of cold. and then the temperatures will just continue to rise. there's a look at 46 degrees. the high temperature for sunday. 53 on monday. as we get into the workweek, tuesday, wednesday, 56 to 65 degrees. and 70 degrees on thursday. so shower chances indeed. but these showers are looking light, warm for next week. unsettled. there's your rain. that rain is out of here right now by christmas day. and what you can expect, look at that. high temperature of 61 degrees. not too bad. right now it is looking as though on christmas day we may be just a little breezy during the afternoon. 52 at 7:00 a.m. 55 at 11:00 a.m. 61 at 3:00 p.m. on christmas
