that's gas infrastructure there, that's natural gas. they don't take any chances. briefly they got people out of their apartments ander about's back in but they may have lost some of their gas service to some of the buildings here now. there's a complex that consists of low rise and mid rise. there's gas company crew here waiting to make some permanent repairs to this. doesn't look like it's a safety issue now. a little bit of damage but much ado about warmth on a morning like this. we're live. back to you. today there will be a memorial for a high school student killed in a car accident. we brought you this story first yesterday as breaking news. the accident happened on franconia-springfield parkway when the driver lost control of his car and slammed into several trees. 18-year-old laween aqua wi was a

senior at lake braddock secondary school. his passenger was not hurt seriously in the crash. the memorial will be held tonight at 8:00 p.m. in the school's parking lot. even though school is out for the break, grief counselors will be available to students on monday. breaking news. there were no survivors on the small plane that crashed in bakersfield. the ntsb is expected to arrive today to begin their investigation. a mayday call came from the aircraft around 4:30 saturday afternoon. shortly after the call the plane was reported missing from radar. it was found several hours later. we're learning more about the txfiñoffer-duty officer inv shooting of a suspect. he had just gotten off work when the suspect came up and pointed a toy gun at him.

he asked for the officer's wallet. the officer said he thought that that gun was real. >> it looked like a black revolver when he announced the robbery and that's when the officer shot him. >> in decision 2016 the final debate of 2015 is in books. terrorism da pa breach and fighting the republican were all big topics. nbc's chris pollone on who made the biggest waves during last night's debate. >> reporter: a day after a data breach controversy led to a war of words between bernie sanders and hillary clinton campaign, both sides moved quickly to stifle the bad blood.

>> nbc's gabe gutierrez report os whine the teen may have decided to run. >> reporter: today investigator ran down more leads in their search for ethan couch. federal authorities say the 18-year-old is on the run after he failed to meet with his probation officer. his mother also missing. >> it's our number one priority for our task force. >> known as the affluenza teen couch was sentenced to ten yea s s' probation. >> we're going to need some ambulances. >> the crash killed four people and injured nine. during sentencing, an unusual defense. hiss attorney argued the teen did not understand the consequences of his actions due to his affluent upbringing. >> i don't think there's been any accountable. >> his son lieu was was injured in the crash. he said he's not surprised couch has gone missing. >> i think he was never -- never

anything because of all the pain medication. now that i'm off of that stuff, i can do stuff again. >> he's back to playing trumpet in the band and looking forward to a trip to tokyo with his dad and a japanese trip with his spring something he and his family didn't think would have been possible six months possible. >> i'm looking for a time when he's back to normal completely. >> doreen gentzler reporting there. well, check this out. buffalo has finally gotten its first snowfall of the year. the city set a record this year for longest time without any snow. now, during an average season, buffalo would have more than 20 inches of snow by now. >> and i've got to say, i'm happy that's not happening here, although i could be alone. some folks want a white christmas. >> a lot of people want a white christmas. my on the other hand, i'm happy to have the flip-flops out. >> better chance of having a white valentine's day than a white christmas. >> and we've had that. >> it's certainly cold enough.

"storm team 4" radar not showing any snow. no rain. it's all dry. driving up and down the atlantic seaboard. down to new england, florida, no travel problems in and out of the midwest. the only snow we have really is a little bit around salt lake city and parts of the mountains

a man was shot to death. they say the man tried to attack two officers. the victim was in the e.r. after being arrested for attempting to attack two other officers earlier in the day. the sheriff's department is reviewing any surveillance or cell phone video from the hospital. a california police officer could face criminal charges after a deadly controversial shooting. now, the man officer patrick shot on saturday died. it showed the officer shooting 26-year-old andrew thomas after he tried to climb out of a car

following a crash. now, that officer said he was surprised by the victim jumping out of the carnd didn't realize he had shot him. the officer could face involuntary manslaughter charges. the investigation into the fire at the yacht club continue this morning. officials still don't know what caused the blaze back on december 12th. so far there are no plans to delay an $18 million expansion and the employees are still being taken care of through the holidays. the club says they'll be paid for a minimum of 30 days. 9:26. coming up this morning, a flight scare after the report of a threat on a plane. what investigators say they found inside a bathroom on board. >> and still going to be cold today. tom's forecast includes rain to start the week. we'll tell you what you need to know coming up. and the number of bank robberies always seems go up in december. now the "news4" i-team digging into why that's a spike and what you need to know on your next

he's so brave he went out to the "storm team 4" weather deck on the line. >> reporter: it's a tough assignment, i'll tell you. it feels nice. even though low sun angle it's bright and intense and you can feel the warmth of the sun. a little bit of a breeze. for today, dress like me. you'll need a puffy coat. you'll need your sunglasses and gloves as we've got cold temperatures staying with us this morning. right now we're hovering a little more than 30s. getting above freezing now in the shenandoah valleys out in the valley, too. direct accordingly for the afternoon and have your "storm team 4" app ready. the nbc watch app when you're out and running around when you're doing shopping today. looks like a great weather for that. rain moving in. when that will arrive that. will be coming up this half hour.

>> thanks, tom. now to a developing story. a midair scare after a suspected bomb was found on board an air france flight headed to paris. the suspected bomb was found in the bathroom. investigators are still trying to determine if it contains any explosive materials. the plan or the plane rather was forced to land in kenya's coastal city of mombasa. all 459 passengers and 14 crew members were safely evacuated. many say they thought there was simply a technical problem. >> the plane just went down slowly, slowly, slowly, so we just realized something was wrong, but the personnel of air france was grail kept everything calm. we've got a developing story. d.c. police are looking for a man who krit kmited two violent

robberies and a sex assault. it happened just before thanksgiving on eighth street in southeast. then the next night the man robbed someone on ives place southeast. dchl c. police released this surveillance video of the incident. take a look. all of them happened between the hours of 9:15 and 10:45 at night. a woman on harvard road said she was in bed early saturday morning. she woke up to find a man standing over her. the woman said she asked the suspect his name, he told her and he left. it doesn't appear he stole anything. they say the man walked in through an unlocked door and may have been intoxicated. happening today, some montgomery county residents are saying enough is enough when it comes to gun violence. there will be a rally today at the old gray courthouse starting at 5:00 p.m. speakers include executives.

and people of victims killed in gun violence will also be there. darlene bryant was stabbed to death back in may. today is her b and her family will celebrate with a candlelight vigil and balloon launch. they are gathering in the 3300 block of b street at 1:00 p.m. funeral arrangements are now set for a teenager found dead in adams morgan last week. paul mcginnis jr.'s body was found in an alley off 18th street near madam organ's bar. the funeral will be on tuesday at st. john newman catholic church in reston. his uncle believes the dcu student fell while using the stars in the back of the bar. it's 9:33. development is boominging across much of the reese but in tyson corner there's so much activity, they say that part of the regulation is destined to turn into a city of the size of seattle and some residents we spoke to welcome that change.

well, our "wednesday's child" has made a lot of progress. it's been three years since we first met isaiah and he's been waiting. >> unfortunately he's still waiting for a new home. "news4's" barbara harrison with isaiah. >> reporter: you may remember isaiah. the last time was almost three years ago. hi. oh, what a wonderful hug. >> reporter: it was wonderful to see isaiah doing so many more thinking for himself than when we first met him as a "wednesday's child." >> can you show me which one? >> oh, wow. >> good work, nucleus. >> reporter: these days isaiah's science teacher mike cummings says he's doing, very, very well. this year at 13 he's taking biology and continuing to show wonderful progress in the classroom. >> he's very clever, witty, has the ability to be very independent. he will definitely communicate his likes, dislikes and needs to you in a very special way.

holiday season. >> it's not just money that's at risk. there are some things you need to know before you swing by the bank. >> reporter: a recent rash of robberies. some handing notes to a teller. some holding a trigger on the gun. this pulling this one. up and down the leesburg pipe. >> as he walks, he's dragging his leg. >> he's hit one bank after another and another and another and he's still on the loose. >> hard to put into words that fear that you feel when you know that your son may be in danger. >> reporter: a man who is on the run gave lorraine the scare of her life. >> this was the window he had broken through. >> reporter: she wasn't home but her son was nearby. >> the entire neighborhood with children is there. >> reporter: and the guy with the gun. >> and the guy with the gun was there.

>> reporter: a review of fbi records show that there are more bank robbers to catch. we discovered nearly 25% of all bank robberies in d.c. and northern virginia last year happened in the last month of the year. the same was true in 2013 and in 2012. and the fbi expects that it could happen again this year. >> i wouldn't contribute that people are buying christmas presents with their bank robbery money. i think most of the time they're definitely feeding an addiction of some sort. >> reporter: the feds say the need for money grows and fast, for some before the holidays, and the crooks think it's easier to get in and get out before the holidays. >> i think it's easier to conceal your identity. it's much more acceptable in a full winter coat and bar cla va and things like that. >> reporter: this was in jeune last year. he was easy to spot and stopped. before he ever got inside, a customer tipped off workers. >> he drove around to the drive-up window and said, you've got a guy in a mask outside in your parking lot.

>> reporter: they were prepared. >> we immediately called the police, locked the doors and we were prepared. >> reporter: they found that 15% of bank robberies in northern virginia and d.c., the robber pulled a gun. that's what happened here when the wells fargo in woodbridge was robbed recently. the fbi says the more a bank robber hits, the bolder he gets which is why you have to stay so aware especially this time of year. >> be a good witness, be vigilant, be aware of your surroundings. so many times they're looking up. >> fbi records show in d.c. the feds solve two of every three bank heists catching the crooks. but marty knows the baker robbers will still keep trying, especially in the cold of december. scott macfarlane, "news4"
