you may remember that shooting happened last month just one day after the paris attacks. the washington post reports that rashaad bug bay cut a woman who was trying to stop him from hurting himself outside of union station. the 25-year-old went inside where officers saw him carrying the knife. officers say he came at them and so they fired. today you can honor the memory of a montgomery county police officer killed in the line of duty. the department is hosting a blood drive in honor of officer nora leota. a suspected drunk driver hit the 24-year-old who died of his injuries earlier this month. today's blood drive runs from 8:00 until 3:00. it's on edison park drive in gaithersburg. you're asking to register online with the red cross. find a link on the nbc washington app. this developing now out of california where people were

wondering about this strange streak of white that went across the night sky. military officials saying this fireball scene across arizona, nevada, is debris from a russian rocket. social media was crazy with photos and videos with what many people thought which is a shooting star or perhaps a meteor that was breaking apart. that russian rocket, by the way, launched monday. eun, back to you. >> thank you, angie. christmas is friday. christmas eve is tomorrow. a lot of you are taking your trip home today. in fact, the numbers are expected to break records. aaa predicts more than 100 million people will be traveling for the holidays. that includes 2.5 million people in our area alone. more than 40% of the people who live here will be traveling. now let's take a look at aaa. people will be taking the train or something else to get to their destination.

at half staff today in honor of nypd detective joseph lemm. he, too, was killed in the suicide bombing. now we're learning more about the four other airmen who died as well. major adrianna vorderbrewingen leaves behind be a wife and a little boy. she is the first openly gay person to die. louis bonacassa. michael cinco was from the rio grande valley and chester mcbride had been a college football standout. it is now 4:35. today a man accused of fatally shooting a guest in his montgomery county home heads to court. the shooting happened around midnight on monday on ridge road in damascus. police say he shot mario perez during an altercation. he's charged with first degree murder. damascus road is open in montgomery county after a deadly accident. david harris crashed into a

utility poll around 6:30 last night. it didn't take long for odonton county, maryland, to figure out what happened there. he was waiting to renew his sex offender registration on saturday when he saw a package delivered. he took the package to his car and walked back into the station and reregistered as a sex offender. after watching surveillance video police headed to leonard's home and arrested him. the package was returned to its owner. now to decision 2016. >> what happened to her? i'm watching the debate and she disappeared. >> donald trump slammed hillary clinton for using the bathroom during the democratic debate. he went on to use a vulgar term to describe clinton's loss to president obama in 2008. trump took to twitter yesterday to defend his words. nbc's tracie potts will join us live from capitol hill in ten minutes for more on this

continued debate. developing today, hundreds of black lives matter protesters are planning another scene like this one at the mall of america. they want to focus attention on police officers who shot and killed a blackman in minneapolis last month. the mall asked the judge to ban demonstrators. he said three organizers of that protest must stay away. >> but to all potential demonstrators, it's against the law and there will be consequences. >> now the judge said that she could not order all protesters away, but the mall says anyone who shows up could be charged with trespassing. all right. take a look at your tv screen on this weather alert day. we showed you at the top of the hour what is going on here. well, this is one of our tower cameras pointed at reagan national airport. tough to see anything out there because it's blacked out by the fog. chuck bell says that's not the only thing we're up against today. is free speech protected by the constitution if it's

relatively light commuter traffic because a lot of people don't have to go to work. midday, that's when the heaviest of the rain will be here. that will have the biggest impact on travel. 9 or 10 this morning and 3 or 4 this afternoon. wait until much later in the day into the evening hours. rain will taper back to occasional showers. thick fog out across the shenandoah valley. i keep mentioning this. i think it will be expanded into the washington area. already light rain down across southern maryland. this is the leading edge of a big push of moisture going away from the carolinas to georgia. flying, little rock to new orleans to dallas to houston. severe weather there. big rain along most of the hubs in the east. that could slow things down. it is not cold. mid to upper 50s. the next big change in the weather really does arrive during the day today. rain and fog in the 50s this morning. that push of strong southerly winds brings in the moderate rain and much milder temperatures. we should be in the mid to upper 60s later on today.
