property. >> stores are packed tonight as shoppers pick up those final gi gifts. >> our rain has moved out for now. there's more on the way. >> check out that scene. we're expecting record setting temperatures tomorrow. doug joins us from the storm center. >> right now, the temperature has gone up 3 degrees. the record for today, wednesday is 71 degrees. we're only 5 degrees shy of a record right now. 66 at 11:00 at night in december, 70 towards richmond. extremely warm air. that's the reason we've seen so much rain and moisture in the atmosphere and seen activities earlier. you can see rain out and some locations picking up over an inch and a half of rain and there is more rain to the south. nothing around our area now. dry for the next few hours. down south we're watching this area here and watching what

happened to the west. every single one of these, a tornado report today and tornado outbreak in mid-december. that system making its way. i'll show you what to expect now and at christmas coming up in just a minute. here at the live desk, we're getting an update with severe storms the one doug showed us ripping through the south. look at 14 tornadoes that tou touched down in mississippi. those are storm chasers getting a look at one of the twisters that went across tennessee. it killed six people in the states and we're getting a sign of damage. the winds were so strong they tossed trucks around the highway. neighbors are sending in pictures of homes torn apart or blown away. the mayor at clarksville said he has seen horrific damage.

there is concern strong winds could turn things into projectiles. >> out of southeast d.c. police are on the scene of a major crash involving two vehicles on naylor road. that's where we find jackie bensen with details. >> reporter: jim, we're told at least two people have very serious injuries. tow trucks here to move the cars. the video we have to show you, you can see from looking at that video that there was a lot of force involved in this accident. terrible terrible damage to these two vehicles and very serious injuries. we do not know in which car the most seriously injured were. d.c. police are investigating. there's a possibility one of the drivers of one of the vehicles did not remain on the scene. that's what we're looking into right now. this is also a metro bus route,

very heavily used metro bus route. metro is watching the cleanup and removal of the vehicle so they can hope to open this road again. right now, an investigation under way after a serious crash in the 2700 black of naylor road southeast earlier this evening. two people and we understand one in critical condition, the other also we are told has very serious injuries. we don't know if they're men or women and as i said, an investigation under way. live in southeast washington, jackie bensen. four people face first degree murder charges for a man found in a shallow grave in gaithersburg. found dead at the great seneca park. two of the teens that committed the crime face charges for the shooting death in gutierrez

cruz. someone shot his body in a wooded area of the mall last month. both murders were gang related. it has been a miserable wet holiday get away day. and hopefully it will get better. at the airports, there were thousands of delay s across the country. just a handful. reagan national just 17 cancellations at dulles and only two at bwi marshall. >> it was a dash walk to the train with a lot of power out at the station and leaving people without any light and amtrak said no trains were delayed by this power outage and the power is on tonight.

mall at times it was a frenzy. >> there are definitely a lot of people doing last minute shopping. >> daniel waited until the last minute to do christmas shopping. he's been so busy at work he hasn't wrapped gifts. >> it was a two hour wait to get my gift wrapped and it was crowded. >> reporter: they are expecting even bigger crowds on christmas eve. some people admitted they waited because they're procrastinators and others on a tight budget and waited for this week's paycheck. some shoppers say they have an excuse to do that last minute shopping and believe they're getting last minute deals. >> i finally have time to shop. >> what are you getting? >> i got everyone almost squared away, a few more things for some family members. >> reporter: some stores offered 25-50% off.

a black lives matter activist said the nation's largest shopping mall was used as a decoy for a protest at the international airport. the protesters wanted to bring attention to a shooting of a black man. they temporarily cut security lines down but now back to

normal. they arrested 15 people. something lost long ago now found by the strangest of circumstances. melissa walked us through with a reunion that ended right here in our area. >> the search for an owner of a ring ended several years ago and spanned several states. it ended in a reunion thanks to one letter that started it all. >> my grandmother, dorothy parks, found this on a table in tennessee in the 1990s. >> the letter handwritten. >> before she died she asked me to find the ring's owner. >> reporter: addressed to someone or any in gaithersburg, with a love for mystery. >> the ring is 10-karat gold from 1951. >> reporter: there were some clues with a graduation date and initials inside. >> i was able to come upstairs

to the media center in high school and pull out the yearbook and do research. from my good graces, there was only one person who fit the initials rno. >> reporter: raymond neal owens, class of 1951 known as "shorty," and president of the education foundation wrote a letter online explaining to owens junior in maryland. >> i was crying like a baby. i broke down. it was just so amazing. >> reporter: shock and tears, neal reunited with his late father's ring. raymond passed away in 2012. >> i had no idea it was lost. searching through old photos, i actually found an iteniary of this trip. >> reporter: an iteniary of that 1993 trip to tennessee, the trip when that ring must have been lost. >> it brings back a lot of really good memories of all the

lorraine. no rain to talk about right now. we saw a lot of it earlier, a lot of pausing on earlier roads and gw in parts of the region. and well over an inch and a half of rain and we even saw thunder and lightning with this. a lot of thunder and lightning in this area and moving on out. watching this area here and this area back to the west, this is the actual front making its way our way. out ahead of it, we will see a reformation of showers and storms during the day tomorrow. keep the umbrella handy. most of your christmas eve will be dry. i expect to see rain in parts of the region. notice showers and at 9:00 or 0 10:00, some enhancement of showers maybe a heavy downpour or two. that's why i want you to keep the umbrella and by 1:00 in the

afternoon and on the dry side and maybe an isolated shower in the evening. most of the area does look dry. keep the umbrella in the car just in case. lo waking up, possible fog across the region and warm temperatures. record warmth, highs in the 70s, record high is 69. we'll get there easily. and gusty winds up to 30 miles an hour, without the storms and with them we could be 50 miles an hour and we could be seeing gusts 20-30 miles an hour. 69 degrees coming up on saturday. pretty good chance of rain on friday. that's something you will be watching out for. if you have traveling to do, sprinkles possible early on friday, 67 around 11:00, 68 by 3:00, temperatures drop in the afternoon and we could see rain during the afternoon on christmas day. we're breaking this record, no
