deadly storms have destroyed homes and left a lot of families heart broken this christmas and we'll bring you an update in a moment. >> here in our area, the rain, fog and the unusual warm weather out there and seeing t-shirts and flip-flops around town. we have team coverage on how it's impacting your plans. let's start it off with storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal. >> record hot temperatures were set at reagan, dulles and bwi marshall. 71 degrees and it's mild and humid. it's muggy and in addition to that i'm tracking this line of rain impacting parts of loudoun and montgomery and howard county and this is moving very slowly toward the north and here are estimated impact times for you. frederick, just after 5:30 and walkersville at about 5:45 and westminster right around the 6:00 hour. aside from that, not much activity on the radar. you can see some heavy rain and even some thunderstorms down around the northern neck. those could clip southern maryland and that's my main

focus of concern tonight for showers as you head out on your christmas eve. it will be areas along i-95 into the east. i do think the district remains dry and notice at 9:00 p.m. tracking scattered showers around southern maryland and baltimore. by midnight everyone is dry and i'll have more on temperatures this evening and more coming up, jim. >> to the south and midwest when 11 people have been killed by severe thunderstorms. you can see the path of destruction left in northern mississippi here where a tornado killed a 7-year-old boy. homes in that area reduced to rubble. some of them unrecognizable, and along some roadways the strong winds actually knocked over tractor trailers. and more than a decade since folks in indiana saw a tornado in december until now. a line of storms generated high winds and heavy rain and that twister. no one was hurt in indiana, but the winds were gusting up to 70 miles an hour, enough to damage buildings and bring down power

lines and trees. the situation in the south is creating delays for people trying to get around town. flight aware is tracking 2800 delays in the u.s. today and more than 300 flights have been canceled. atlanta appears to be the hardest hit and most impacted with nearly half of its flights delayed today. news 4's derek ward is live in reagan national airport with a look at things in our area. derrick? >> reporter: it's sort of a tale of two sets of destinations. folks heading south aren't seeing too many problem, but folks coming from the south are seeing some problems, but despite that, aaa says this could be a record-setting year. they expect more than 100 million people to take some sort of trip. more than 50 miles from home and with conditions favorable for flyers, a lot of folks are taking wing. these low airfares are a pleasant trend and they've been staying low over the past 12 months and part of the reason, fuel costs are down and savvy travelers find their own ways to

save. >> i was fortunate, i had some free mileage to use before certain dates. >> she was among the travelers and it was on the early side for her. since i don't have smaller children i fly christmas day. >> we caught up with a family with a little one and they aren't going to wait. >> it's very warm in florida, and that's where we're going right now. >> we spend our holidays in the florida keys every year since i was 9 years old. >> a lot of southern locations and thanks to the weather down south, but westbound travelers were having a better time. >> i'm headed to chicago, the windy city. >> they're seeing record temperatures just like us which makes this annual transition for this family less dynamic and no-less fun especially on this holiday. >> we will have an awesome christmas. >> reporter: we will in the 6:00

hour have one traveler who is coming out of atlanta and while her trip never left the continental u.s. and in the time it took to get here she could have flown to europe. derrick ward, news 4, back to you. >> it should go without saying you cannot bring a gun in a carry-on, but check out what tsa officers found here in a bag yesterday. this is a wa.32 caliber handgun recovered at bwi marshall yesterday and officers spotted the gun in the x-ray machine and cited the man. it was not loaded at the time. this is the 16th gun detected in the carry-on at bwi this year. new tonight, the kind of story that just makes you say bah humbug. a local man helped run a business in herndon, but he admits to dipping into the company to line his own pockets and buying gifts for himself. scott macfarlane has the story you will see only on 4. >> reporter: the company tucked into the second floor of this

office complex in herndon. it did survive, it is still open despite getting ripped off by its own company president. >> vick deanthony isn't the boss anymore. he admits ripping the place off while serving as president of insequence inc. for a decade. dipping into the bank accounts for more than a half million there ares to make his mortgage payments and then for tens of thousands more to help sell his home in leesburg and more to pay off his credit cards and to give money to family members and for a shopping spree. court records obtained by news 4 show deanthony bought a car, personal watercraft and a recreational vehicle and even spent $100,000 for home decor and landscaping. ultimately the company lost as much as $3 million in the scheme. deanthony has admitted committing the crime pleading guilty to wire fraud this week in court inial exandrin ray and he's facing up to 20 years in

prison when he's sentenced next year. he refused to speak to news 4, but his lawyer did. >> he wasn't trying to conceal anything. it wasn't a situation where he was trying to conceal to see, you know, take money, but he found himself making large purchases out of the company funds. it looks extremely bad. >> reporter: representatives for insequence inc. say its employees lost, losing money in retirement fund, irrepable damage, they said. >> in sequence isn't the only scrooge-like case. coming up on news 4 at 6:00, another local business ripped off by the woman who managed it. in herndon, scott macfarlane, news 4. police in montgomery county want your help in finding a missing man. jedia is from pennsylvania and he was last seen near the grover metro station in north bethesda. police tell us he was a passenger in a vehicle.

his family is concerned for his welfare and well-being. if you know where he might be you are urged to call police. >> a broken water main threw a wrench into last-minute holiday shopping plans. the pipe broke this morning and forced crews to close streets between south quaker lane. >> first they reopened one lane and then all of duke street by mid-afternoon. >> no shopping, no profit at a christmas eve protest on the magnificent mile. hundreds of people taking part in this demonstration. they're just now wrapping up and they've been peaceful so far. protesters want to draw attention to the killing of laquan mcdonald, a black teenager who was shot 16 times by a white police officer in 2014. rece recently released video called for rahm emanuel to step down. there is a lot of campaigning

going on right now to find the best present you can at this last hour, and moamong the crow in bethesda. >> reporter: we walked around malls here at tysons and we're now here at westfield montgomery mall and look at the parking lot behind me and some drivers tell me they waited 20 to 30 minutes just to find a parking space. many folks wished they shopped online and they waited until the last minute and they found one father who is happy with all of this. let's take a look. >> i enjoy christmas and enjoy family time. >> he is shopping christmas eve with 2-month-old lola. >> reporter: why did you wait until the last minute? >> we've been really busy and my wife wanted me to come along and see the choices that she made. >> reporter: people scrambled to buy left-minute gifts to put under the tree. >> some children told santa what

they want, and some parents are so wrapped up to get gifts for the children. >> we're doing it at the last minute. >> reporter: right now a lot of shoppers tell me they're getting big deals. as much as 25% to 50% off in some stores. they say it's well worth it to wait. >> at tyson's mall in virginia, the christmas countdown continues. >> describe what it's like here in the mall. >> it's pretty craze. >> we are shopping for literally everyone in our family right now. >> reporter: right now at westfield montgomery mall, braden bell says he doesn't need a gift. he's already holding her in his arms. >> i'm happy. i'm joyful. i'm blessed, of course. >> reporter: great. fatherhood is absolutely beautiful. we're back here at westfield montgomery mall. it's expected to close soon and there are still some stores that are open and some folks tell me they're going to get more deals. as for me i finished my christmas shopping today, but next year i will definitely shop online because at times it felt

santa waterskiing along the potomac and reindeer, flying elves, jack frost and frosty the snowman and even the grinch joined old st. nick. we are told this is the 30th anniversary of the waterskiing santa show. it's been down there a dozen years and never felt it like that. >> no. another holiday tradition for some of you. the last-minute shopping. >> today is anything, but a typical christmas eve in d.c. thanks to all that warm weather. news 4's mark segraves is in georgetown and look at you, rolled sleeves and no jacket. it's an average christmas in washington, d.c. and not very average weatherwise, but here in georgetown, there is the hustle and bustle of last-minute shoppers and the christmas decorations are lit and street musicians are playing christmas carols and earlier today we were able to find lots of people who weren't shopping. ♪ ♪

here in georgetown, a live shot of the sidewalk and street musicians playing christmas carols and yes, lots of last-minute shoppers. shops in georgetown are still open for a while, so you have a few more minutes to get shopping done. coming up at 6:00, if you really had your heart set on a white christmas tomorrow and we'll show you a place in d.c. where you can find some snow. chris, back to you. >> a lot of people looking forward to hearing that. >> a lot of people love the frenzy of last-minute shopping and others are quieter and somber night and people are getting ready for christmas eve. the cathedral has a special candle lit service that starts 45 minutes from now and it will host another service tonight later at 10:00. the cathedral will offer a limited number at the door starting a half hour before each service. more than 1,000 kavendels were blessed and lit today in a local monster ney northeast, d.c. and right now they're illuminating the outside of the historic franciscan monastery of the holy

land. the candles are lit for the seven nights of lights which symbolize a welcoming path for the peace and joy brought by the holy family. the montessori will hold midnight mass later tonight. >> a little boy from montgomery county has been through much more than a child should have to. kristen wright shows us how he's still making a difference and using his difficult experience to help others. >> reporter: davir missed days like this bowling when he was sick in a hospital bed. his own immune system attacking his liver. >> they said i had auto immune hepatitis and acute liver failure. doctors thought the 12-year-old needed a transplant. >> i just thought he had the flu. >> he responded well to treatment at medstar university hospital, but there is no cure and his immune system is weak. on a good day he can bowl, always remembering these fighting words from his doctor. >> she told me to make a purpose every day and think of something

tracking some isolated areas of rain this evening, even some thunderstorms in the northern neck and for most of us, inside the beltway it's dry for your christmas eve and mild for everybody. wait until you see more on the temperatures and we'll track rain at times through saturday. tomorrow, i think, a good portion of the day is going to be dry, but saturday is the day you really need to have the umbrella handy and plan for a rainy day and record warmth returns to the area on sunday. all three major airports today hit 71 degrees and hitting new records at each of those airports. here's the latest on the storm team 4 radar and meager showers well north of washington in parts of frederick county impacting areas of mount area making their way up through carroll county and these continuing to fall apart and keeping a close eye on this impressive area of rain,

bringing very heavy rain and lots of lightning to extreme parts of southern maryland and down around the northern neck. for the most part that is going to stay to our south this evening and right now we're at 66 degrees and with plenty of clouds in place and the temperatures will not move too much during the evening hours and maybe a chance of a shower especially if you're in southern maryland and otherwise it's warm and 9:00 still around 66 degrees if we work our way during midnight and we will see areas of fog form and you can head to my twitter and facebook pages for more on fog tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. where it will be the thickest in spots and in some spots to see the full christmas moon. you can find out more information about that, and otherwise, we're talking about another mild day. for christmas, 7:00 a.m. and the temperature is 64 degrees and 10:00 a.m., mild, 65 degrees and once the kids open up their presents tomorrow you can head outside probably and enjoy some dry time and fresh air.

there's the chance of showers for the afternoon hours and i think rain will hold off until the evening hours and 3:00, that's when we hit our high temperature of 60 degrees and a balmy 66. there will be areas of some thick fog. by noon, just plenty of clouds and future weather anemic for the afternoon and the chance of showers is there and it's also feeling a little bit humid again tomorrow. 6:00 p.m., notice the weather bringing rain into the area and we continue to track areas of rain tomorrow night. saturday, kind of looking like a soggy day with the chance of rain throughout the entire day. a high temperature of 60 and we'll kind of fall throughout the day with our temperature and the temperature around 60 degrees by lunch, mid-60 and dinner time, mid-50s and it's a cooler day and well above normal for this time of year. on sunday, a high of 75, that's record warmth. hazy sunshine out there on monday and for monday, keeping it dry and a cold day, 49 degrees and that's a little

the race is on for those last-minute holiday travelers hoping to get out of town before christmas. some of the crowds we've seen in our area have hit delays especially for flights connecting to or from atlanta. flight aware is reporting more than 2800 delays in more than 300 cancellations. >> all of that is mostly due to the extensive damage from those severe storms that stretch from the gulf to the great lakes. at least 11 people were killed and there are reports of tornadoes hitting several states. coming up in 15 minutes we have

reports from some of the hardest-hit areas. a shopping mall in charlotte on lockdown. police say a fight broke out and then an off-duty police officer killed someone. according to police that person who was shot and killed was armed. look at the huge police presence. we are told shoppers are still hiding in locked stores. police aren't saying if the person killed was a man or woman, but we'll get an update for you in just about 15 minutes. >> imagine if the only street in your neighborhood was closed for six months. you couldn't even get packages delivered for the holiday season. >> it's been a reality for some folks in prince george's county. they faced a natural disaster and are now thankful their road is finally reopened. >> reporter: for the first time in six months and just a day before christmas, ups is making deliveries here on piscataway drive in port washington. it's a road that was stranded when a hillside collapsed

creating a virtual landslide. >> we're all relieved. for six months we had to garbage out and carry our groceries in. >> that's right. since june this road was closed to pedestrians and drivers while it was being rebuilt following the slope of 2014. it impacted the lives of 28 families in this waterfront community in piscataway hill. >> reporter: what was it like without this road being directly to your home. >> we had to get exercise. >> they had to get created to figure out how to walk in and out of the neighborhood and they used a hillside and had bungee cords and imagine if you had to do this carrying groceries. >> during the holiday, online shopping for some, out of the question. >> one of the things that happened to us is we couldn't get anything delivered by amazon because the delivery people weren't allowed to come down the road. so this is major progress.

attraction for a rowdy hotel holiday staff party that led to a confrontation with police. workers at the santa fe hotel say the party two weeks ago carried over into a hotel room. guests complained and the hotel called 911. then the governor called police dispatch demanding to know which hotel guest had complained and asking officers to stay away. >> you can call the police, but they won't tell you, you don't tell me? >> i should never talked to central dispatch the way i did and i own it. >> well governor martinez says she wasn't drunk that night, but another police officer said the governor seemed inebriated. the race for the white house is taking a break for the holidays, but donald trump managed to get in a parting shot at hillary clinton. the gop front-runner said hillary did a horrible --

clinton and trump continue to dominate the national polls and all of the candidates will pick up campaigning on monday. two of the biggest cell phone carriers may owe you some money, but you've only got one week left to claim it. verizon and sprint have agreed to refund consumer more than $150 million as part of a settlement over so-called mobile cramming and that's when companies charge you for services you never asked for and some of them like astrology and celebrity goes on up text messaging services have shown up as monthly charges like $10. just search settlement in the nbt washington app and remember the deadline is new year's eve. if you're struggling to get something for that special someone and won't see them until after christmas, it may benefit you to wait. the day after christmas features some of the best bargains especially for clothing and with the unseasonably warm weather, stores are struggling to sell winter gear owe the deals could be even bigger this time out.

some discounts online may also be better than black friday. two things you won't find deals on, toys and electronics. >> infants across the country will get christmas toys that light up, talk or sing, but a new study out says more traditional toys are better for developing the baby's language skills. researchers at northern arizona university used voice recordings of parent-infant interactions as they played with toys, puzzles and blocks and both babies used fewer words compared to books or traditional toys. >> if you recently stayed at a hyatt hotel you should definitely double-check your credit card statement. >> the hotel chain said it discovered malware in its payment system and it's working with security experts to find out if any accounts were compromised and what to do next. >> well, we are only about six hours away from christmas, but

a lunch lady lost her job because she gave a child a free meal, but she may be back to serving the students soon. the district is offering to give the woman her job back after firing her caused an uproar. >> my heart hurts. >> reporter: when it comes to giving a kid a free meal, eileen bowden has no regrets. >> i truly love my job, and i can't say i wouldn't do it

again. >> reporter: bowden was working the middle school cafeteria when a 12-year-old girl said she was hungry and didn't have lunch money. i handed her the food and said we'll take care of it in a minute. >> the school district fired her for theft. >> that's absurd and a ridiculous reason to fire someone. >> i understand rule, but not when a child is hungry. >> the meal cost $1.07 which bowden offered to pay back. the school districts offered to charge $11 and when they go over parents are notified. even when parents don't pay the kids are offered peanut butter and jelly sandwich and milk. >> they're huck preep what do you do? send them out there? >> you sign an online petition asking the district to put her back on the job. >> here's the thing. the school district says it doesn't fire someone for one single incident and court documents show that bowden does have a criminal record. back in 2012 she was convicted

of theft in order to pay restitution after police found surveillance video of her removing cash from her previous employer's register. bowden hasn't commented on that, and hasn't said whether she'll accept the district's offer to come back to work. we'll let you know what she decides. >> it's a continuing tradition at tyson's corner mall, parents waiting in line for hours to take the kids to see santa. we were there along with a crowd of dozens today. many have seen this santa more than once with his real beard and his burly build. he's been a fixture at the mall now for the past 27 years. he travels all of the way from 1010 to meet with kids at tyson's and he says he's looking forward to another 27 more and add to kids and make it special for him. >> you know, the faces, when they come to you and all they want is just your attention and your love. that's what it's all about. >> on a typical weekday at tyson's corner, santa sees as many as 600 children.

area and a dozen people were killed after a series of tornadoes hit across the south. in mississippi alone there have been reports of more than a dozen tornadoes. >> yeah. now hundreds of people are homeless this christmas eve and even more people don't have any power. nbc's mark potter picks up the story in clarksesdale, mississippi. >> as you can see, the roof is partially collapsed and the house is knocked off its foundation pushed in that direction about five feet. the sheriff tells us that the people who live there are okay and they were not hurt, but they did have to spend the night in a shelter in clarksdale. the power crews have been out here since first light this morning repairing the down lines. they have a small army trying to get people their power back. the storm system yesterday spawned dozens of tornados in several states causing widespread damage. in that storm zone, some people are still missing and today the authorities are out looking for them to see if they can find

of light there. these are from thunderstorms that have not left southern st. mary's county, but continuing to impact parts of the eastern shore and the northern neck. for most of us it's dry on this christmas avenue and it's muggy and balmy outside and it's tracking north of washington and it's fizzled out in parts of baltimore county and carol county. i really think most of us, at least 90% of us are going to remain dry and here's future weather as we work our way toward 9:00 and it's bringing us a chance of showers and this is to east 95 in southern mare land and the northern neck. washington and areas to the north and west do stay dry tonight. temperatures this evening kind of hang out in the 60s by midnight and you're headed out to service tonight, dry road conditions not too bad, and mainly south of washington. tomorrow morning, though, we will be dealing with areas of fog and it will be thick in some spots, so head's up for that. tomorrow afternoon, rain is likely especially toward the
