the storm has moved on but what about the heat and humidity. let's go to veronica johnson. >> a lot of moisture in the air and temperatures overall the next couple of days through the weekend will stay on the higher side, we will see some cooling. haven't rain 3:30 to 7:30 this evening. a little bit haven't around the area. very light spotty showers, that's it. most of other rainfall is up here, baltimore, gaithersburg, winchester, a third in d.c. and baltimore. had that have been snow we would have seen between 5 and 15 and as many as 20-inches of snowfall today. it just isn't cold enough. average is 44 degrees, we're way up here to 69 degrees, some 25 degrees higher than average making it feel like april in stead of december. our third warmest christmas on record. now, falling temperatures, as we go to the morning hours, 54-57 with spotty light showers.

we'll talk about what it will feel like on new year's eve coming up. >> thanks. a party on christmas eve led to a fight and then murder. new tonight, police made an arrest in this case. jackie bensen says investigators says the suspect chased the victim down before he killed him. >> reporter: a 911 call about a fight led police to the 7600 black of trail run road in the falls church area where they found the body of 23-year-old edgar armando serrano. >> we found an individual who has died with trauma to the upper body. we're currently investigating that death. >> reporter: serrano was pronounced dead at the scene. investigators learned just prior to the fight, the victim had been to a christmas eve party at a home on alger avenue and they believe 34-year-old santos

narciso osorio chased him with some type of sharp instrument. investigators suspected early on the victim and suspect knew each other. delays what caus details of what caused the fight is still unclear. any with information is asked to call the falls church police. jackie bensen, news4. a christmas day crash killed a man in washington when a man went the wrong way on the beltway. it happened this morning and maryland state police say the man was going the wrong way on the loop and slammed head on to a car and both cars were completely destroyed. paramedics lifted the other man to the hospital. it's been a bittersweet christmas for a lot of families in the south as they cope with the aftermath of deadly tornadoes. some lost homes and others, loved ones. storms brought out the best in

families and neighbors came together to donate food, toiletries and christmas gifts to the victims. >> we are a lot better because we came out with the clothes on our back like this. >> we make sure everybody is taken care of. >> the death toll has been ri rising and now the storms have killed 14 people in four states. christmas is coming to a close. ♪ >> here in d.c., cardinal donald wuerl delivered a message of compassion. catholics came from the district, maryland and virginia to celebrate christmas mass and cardinal wuerl urged them to participate in the year of mercy pope frances launched this month. >> each of us can carry away from this celebration a gift. the gift of compassion. >> the basilica also provided its annual dinner to hundreds of

people who are homeless or in need. >> a huge crowd cheered pope frances as he celebrated mass in pontiff city and prayed for holy mass around the world and urged palestinians to come to direct talks and seemed to come very close to endorsing a two-state solution. the pope also prayed the united nation s agreement would end the civil war in syria. oh, my god! >> american troops are celebr e celebrating christmas all over the world. some lucky ones were able to make it home in time for those hugs. in afghanistan and elsewhere, service members received a special christmas meal, some of them even sang carols to get themselves in this holiday spirit. more than 200,000 u.s. troops are deployed right now on just about every continent. a lot of them right now thinking about their families back home. here at home, volunteers are giving food to the people who

need it the most. chris gordon takes us inside a program that delivered hundreds of meals to the homeless and it's still growing. >> reporter: more than 200 volunteers showed up at burke community church to distribute more than 600 hot meals for the homeless. they are helping the 25th project, a nonprofit group started by jay herriott. >> reporter: why do you do it? >> i was this close from being homeless. the eviction notice was on my door and didn't have anything. we started it and it's just grown and grown. >> merry christmas. >> reporter: meals were handed out here at franklin park at 14th and k street northwest. in mcpherson square, a women's shelter in d.c. and woodbridge homeless encampment. >> if it wasn't for a lot of these people a lot of us would be starving. >> i feel blessed. i feel blessed. i appreciate everything.

my birthday was last night, christmas eve. >> reporter: i asked the bostic family why they volunteered? >> our heart goes out to other people during christmas-time to go out and spread love and make sure everyone else is happy. it brought joy to our hearts to come out and do it. >> i've been doing this all my life and i think it's nice to give back to those who don't have as much as i do. >> reporter: the 25th project has a charity event on the 25th of every month. in february they collect soup and socks to give to the homeless, trying to keep this christmas spirit alive all year long. in the district, chris gordon, news4. >> in fact, last year, soup and socks was held in 22 states and 33 cities. the 25th project is hoping to make it into a national event. there's more evidence tonight someone tried to burp down bill clinton's childhood home at hope. investigators found graffiti at the historic site and think

cancer-free almost exactly a year meeting pope frances in italy. the 7th grader said after seeing the pope she knew she'd be okay. >> it was a moment of victory. i feel it's gone. the pope made the miracle happen and everybody that prayed for me in the community made it happen. >> she met the pope in the make a wish foundation but never doubted it and naming her iv pole, bob. this christmas coming from the jewish center in northwest d.c. volunteers sang carols and passed out gifts and prepared meals for the homeless and launched a blood drive attra attracting close to 1,000 people of all faiths. for a lot of people, big is definitely better. they celebrated the holiday at the national christmas tree. the tree is more than 40 feet tall sits just south of the white house on the ellipse. people have been coming by to
