georgeto georgeto georgetown. you can see wet roads from the showers and drizzle that we have been tracking all night. tomorrow is one of the biggest travel days of the year. plus unseasonably warm weather contributing to the deadly storms down south, and the situation just got even worse. >> a deadly wrong-way wreck on the beltway in maryland killed a man who was visiting his family for the holidays. news 4's darcy spencer spoke to the victim's widow and joins us from the newsroom with our top story. >> reporter: erika, moreno dunn was married and had plans to start a family when his life was cut short. new tonight, i talked to his wife, who said she doesn't know how she's going to go on without him. she's now raising money to send his body back to his native country. >> i was always with him. he was always with me. he's my whole life. >> reporter: alana moreno dunn

became a widow on christmas morning. her husband, franklin moreno dunn shown smiling on their wedding day less than a year and a half ago. he was killed in a crash on the beltway in prince george's county. >> i was looking forward to spending our life together. i don't know what i'm going to do now. we were going to try to have kids next year, and then in five years i wanted to try to move to a different country. we had plans. >> reporter: instead of planning for their future, she's planning for his funeral and trying to raise money to fulfill his last wishes, to be buried in his native country, el salvador. >> that's why i really want to do that. that's hard for me because i can't go visit his grave whenever i want to, but that's what he told me. so that's what i'm going to do. >> reporter: she says her husband had been visiting his uncle in silver spring and was driving to their fort washington home when the crash happened near branch avenue. state police say the other driver was going in the wrong direction. it was 3:45 in the morning. >> i hope it was just a bad

mistake that he made. >> reporter: dunn left behind a large family here and in el salvad salvador. his wife says he'll be remembered for being kind and generous. >> i don't know how i'm going to live without him. >> reporter: he did have a very large family. that family has set up a gofundme page to help pay for those expenses. they've already raised nearly $9,000. you can donate through a link that we put on our nbc washington app. >> darcy spencer thank you so very much. police in clinton, maryland, trying to find out who shot two people early this morning. neighbors called police after hearing gunshots on park view lane. officers working the crime scene found the man and a woman shot inside a car on nearby thrift road. they believe one victim drove to that second location. a neighbor, who was visiting from out of state, describes what he heard. >> we're here visiting from chicago. and it was right around 2:00, we

heard what sounded like three gunshots. being from chicago, unfortunately i know the sound. i ducked down, and then i heard a vehicle speeding away. >> reporter: police have not released the names of the victims. >> a man is recovering right now after he was stabbed tonight in leesberg. the attack happened around 8:00 on fort evans road. police told us they identified a suspect but didn't say if they had arrested anybody. sirens going off in texas this evening after a tornado warning. this video of lightning and an explosion is from rockwall, texas. police in nearby garland, northeast of dallas, say four people died. all of them were in their cars when the severe weather passed through. search and rescue operations have started after reports of damaged homes. >> then in birmingham, alabama, they're cleaning up after an ef 2 twister passed through christmas night. the system dumped more than six inches of rain in some places.

this week, a 7-year-old boy was killed in the city of holly springs, mississippi. severe storms remain in the forecast for sunday night through monday. the death toll from the four hardest hit states now stands at 22. expect some rain here in our region, but some good news. the timing may have low impact on travelers. that's all good news. amelia joins us from the storm team 4 weather center. >> well, erika, tomorrow morning we could still be dealing with some drizzle until about 7:00, 8:00 a.m. the majority of the day is looking dry. if you are leaving town tomorrow, i hope you had a nice day. road conditions should be just fine. you probably have on the air conditioner with temperatures tomorrow hitting near record or record levels. as we work our way toward the late afternoon hours, can't rule out some showers, but it's really tomorrow night when we will be tracking rain. so you do want to keep that in

mind. now you're hearing about all of this severe weather. this storm system is what's bringing us light showers, rain, and patchy fog as well. notice this massive line of rain and even on the backside of it, snow moving into parts of texas. right now on storm team 4's radar, not tracking any rain. just drizzle. i'll have more on temperatures coming up in my full forecast, erika. >> thanks, amelia. meanwhile, outrage in chicago tonight after a police officer shot and killed two people. tonight we've got new information from the chicago police department. they are now offering condolences to the family of the 55-year-old woman killed, saying the officer shot her by accident. this started early saturday morning with a disturbance call. police say an officer opened fire after being confronted by a combative subject. according to family members, 19-year-old quinn toneio la greer was killed along with a neighbor, a mother of fire, betty jones. the officers involved are on routine administrative leave

while the investigation continues. a car trapped by live wires this evening in montgomery county. we take a look at this picture, this crash scene on clarksberg road. this happened right near the off ramp from i-270. the road shut down. the person inside the vehicle was not seriously hurt. today's the first day of kwanzaa, an observance that honors african-american culture. at kwanzaa fest in mount rainier today, teens were taught how to apply the seven principles of kwanzaa to their daily lives. kwanzaa was first celebrated back in 1966. ♪ oh, say can you see >> on the national mall, christians and muslims came together in a ceremony today. they sang the national anthem as well as some christmas carols and islamic songs. the event was held to celebrate the birth of jesus and the

prophet, mohammed, whose birthday this year fell on the 24th, something that hasn't happened in nearly 300 years. in tyson's corner, some of you were storming the stores. the national retail federation said about 66% of shoppers are planning to check out the after-christmas deals this week. some discounts are even less than they were a week ago. in a survey, nearly half the people said they'll be out at malls and other stores, and 43% said they plan to shop online. imagine 1,000 people in virginia dying from heroin and opioids. the new report that says that could soon be our reality. and find out what police say one man was doing when he fell off a 60-foot cliff.

>> there are big concerns in the commonwealth over opioid and heroin-related deaths. virginia health officials say overdose deaths from those drugs could kill more than 1,000 people next year. that according to the virginian pilot newspaper. the number of deaths has been rising for the past several years. you can see just how much it's increased and how virginia leaders plan to deal with the problem on the nbc washington app. republicans in the virginia general assembly are expected to block the governor's medicaid plans again this coming year. the governor told our news partner he's going to try to work out a deal behind closed door. the governor is hoping to bring

electronic device walked off a cliff yesterday. he died after falling 60 feet off san diego's sunset cliffs. witnesses saw him on the device and say he just fell over the edge. three good samaritans made their way down the rocks and administered cpr but could not save him. firefighters are making progress in a fast-moving wildfire out west. now, in december, this is not typically what you see in california. but with the historic drought, they've been battling fires all year long. nbc's blake mccoy has details on the latest fire threatening homes in one of the most scenic parts of southern california. >> reporter: an ominous glow bringing terror to the night sky. this video shot by a dutch family visiting on holiday. embers flying past their windshield. flames reaching out into the roadway. >> i was like this is my last

minute of life. i was in total shock. i didn't know what to do. i was just still holding my camera, shaking. we're from the netherlands. we have no experience with these fires, and we didn't know how bad it could be. >> reporter: theirs, the last car to pass before people begin turning around on the highway, driving into oncoming traffic to flee the flames. the fire broke out late last night in ventura county and spread quickly. fueled by extremely dry conditions and whipping 50-mile-per-hour wind gusts. the seasonal santa anas blowing through the canyons, pushing the fire towards neighborhoods on the coast. evacuations were ordered for nearly 100 homes. >> we've had all available fixed wing aircraft in california working this fire. >> reporter: at day break, helicopters continued their aerial assault, dropping water to keep the flames from burning homes. a successful effort helped by a change in the winds. >> it's a very dynamic fire.

the fire is going to resist our control. we're not quite out of the woods yet. >> reporter: december is not typically fire season in california, but with the historic drought, fire season is now all year long. >> with inclement weather affecting millions of people across the country, we are really lucky right now. >> for the most part, it looks generally quiet. weather is going to continue across our area. there's going to be plenty of chances of rain for this upcoming week, but i'm not tracking a threat for severe weather. if we hit a high at reagan national, that's going to be a record. t-shirt tomorrow. rain tomorrow night. if you are traveling tomorrow after the sun goes down as early as 5:00 p.m., you'll be dealing with some rain. then you'll need the warm jacket on monday as we deal with a cold blast of air. then more rain mainly monday night into tuesday. tomorrow, the weather generally having a low impact on your day. we could even have some limited sunshine tomorrow. rain starts to move into the

area later in the day. i'll be showing you that on future weather. currently temperatures around 5 degrees with 52 in washington. by tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m., a temperature of 57. just about all the major reporting sites still reporting drizzle, and drizzle is still possible until about 7:00 or 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. by lunch time, we're mild. a temperature of 67 degrees. we'll hit our high of 73 at about 3:00 in the afternoon. it's a little bit breezy later in the day tomorrow, and showers do arrive during the evening hours. 7:00, the temperature around of 6. here's the timing on future weather. tracking rain up in pennsylvania. this is sinking south by 8:00 p.m. it's in washington, montgomery, fairfax, prince george's county as well. impacting fred ring. notice some yellows and oranges. maybe some pockets of heavier rain, but we're not tracking any severe weather tomorrow during the overnight hours. by monday morning, we're dry, and it's all about a big

temperature change. 49 is the high temperature on monday, but we actually hit that during breakfast. by lunch we're in the mid-40s and dinner, in the low 40s with more showers likely by dinner time on monday. it's also going to be a blustery day, adding an additional chill to the air. tuesday a high of 57 with plenty of clouds and rain likely on tuesday, especially during the first half of the day. for wednesday, a high temperature near 60 degrees. it looks like we'll start off dry wednesday and then another round of rain moves back into the area wednesday night, potentially lingers on thursday. that's why you see the chance of showers there on thursday with a high of 54. if you have plans for your new year's eve outdoors, here's what you can anticipate. 10:00 p.m., a temperature around 48 degrees. midnight, clearing skies. at that point a temperature of 46. and 1:00 a.m., it's going to be chilly with a temperature of 44. as we ring in the new year on friday, it's looking like partly sunny skies. a temperature of 47. our average high, 44. so for the first weekend of 2016, erika, it looks like we'll
