good morning. a christmas tree is timely this season and then we will look inside of prince jordan. we will steak to the -- let's start with the christmas tree. this is a no brainer, but there's a right wrong and way wrong. what's the best way to expose of christmas trees? >> yes, we do pick up for the live cut christmas trees immediately following christmas day. we asked them to do is ton collection and the yard waste is to place the christmas tree at
5:31 am
the curb side and then it's transport and we do a mulch madness around earth day. >> and then you bring it back to the residence? >> yes. >> so you have to get everything off the tree? >> yes, it's all natural products. we do ask that any decorations that maybe on the tree to remove that in advance. >> is there anything if it's not exposed of completely. >> we asked you to keep it well watered. they become dry when they're not watered. the county -- a large part of the county is picked up on wednesday because that's the yard waste day. if you can plan to have it out tuesday night or wednesday
5:32 am
morning before the collection day, that's the safest thing to do in order to keep it from not being so dry. >> and then we know that firefighters talk about that in the home. does that mean when you go outside as well? >> yes, we do not want them to keep it outside and a large portion is collected on wednesday. there are some other areas that are on a different day. >> how long will you pick it up? >> we have pick up in prison george's county. >> had you how do we do artificial tree sns. >> well, it's our hope that the expense of buying a tree that
5:33 am
you would use it over and over for christmas. there's a use for them and they like to pick a big tree around this time of the year. so if you're not reusing the tree, think of where you can donate that tree for the use and purpose. >> yeah, that's good to use again. what are the other ways to reduce, reuse and recycle during the post approximate holiday season? >> well, take a look at the christmas cards that you're receiving in the mail and make gift tags for the following year. they make beautiful ones. they're better than paper and to reuse or regift the presents for the next year.
5:34 am
the children love to rewrap things. large boxes you can put those at the curb side for recycling. depending on the space at home, you can save some and some of that paper to think about throughout the year any packages that you're sending out that you can reuse the box as a cushion type material on the inside and then you save money without having go and buy boxes and that packing material. >> now, if you don't want to expose that do the residence break it down and send them back out? >> it's always in the back to save that space if you're inside of the cart or bend. you may want to take the largest box and flatten it and place it inside of one large box knowing that the hall will collect the boxes and all of the content
5:35 am
within that. >> are confused what is recycling and what is not. if there's plastic on them or certain type of paper and food. what is recyclable and what is not? >> well, with the identification code and all of that is placed in the recycling bend. if you have a plastic bag and that's the use of bag s and shoning for gifts and about the grocery store. if you have plastic bags, we asked the residence and many stores that expect that plastic film for recycling. most of the plastics are

that sound. like nails on a chalkboard. but listen to this: (family talking) that's a different kind of sound. the sound of the weekend. unleash the power of dough. give it a pop. it's always worth remembering... that icing the cinnamon rolls is a privilege not a right. unleash the power of dough. give it a pop.
5:38 am
welcome back to viewpoint. we're here with the prince geor's back with the manager of environment. recently your department changed names and it was department of environmental resources. what's the mission? >> to help lo pro vied a beautiful and sustainable prince county and help the residence and businesses. the other local leader and communities to take part in
5:39 am
beautifying the environment. just the overall stainability of what that means and how to save the energy and how to minimize the waste going to the land fill. we would like to put a shout out to the residence and business sector in the county. prince george's county has maintained the number one spot for the waste diversion. so we know that our outreach efforts and communication and forcing those has had a very affective impact on the county. >> what other program with the new name? >> yeah, so some of the new initiatives that we have is that we're promoting the food composting and then the hierarchy. we tend to buy more than we need when doing a party. think of how to use the left overs and a recipe be for the
5:40 am
next day and then a neat idea and containers. it's a nice gift when they leave to let them take left overs home and reuse the containers. we have a composting container in prince george's county. it's setting out the christmas tree and garland and anything that's live cut and just closing that loop. >> you also mentioned batteries and recycling batteries and there were electronics and gifts. how do we do the batteries and you said this there's a problem. >> well, we do the rechargeable batteries. if it's appropriate that you have purchased and it's definitely the way to go. those can be used over and over.
5:41 am
also when you're shopping for the decorations, a lot of the new productings as and stores c with the timers and it not only saves the life of your battery, but we have the energy of the electricity as well. we recommend the cold and there are companies out there that will access the home for energy efficiencie efficiencies. we want to promote that. >> yeah, it's about getting people to care and some of this is just new to them and they don't know you how to get started. what is it to starting to becoming more environmentally friendly. how does that work? >> you can start a backyard composting bend.
5:42 am
most of them have information. it's mixing your yard trims and leaves and grass, food scraps and paper tall. it's a matter of air rating it and using a pitch fork and that's a natural soil or fertilizers that you can use on the flower beds and you close that because it produces beautiful vegetables. we own the facility in prince george's county. we have some scraps coming in from the university of maryland, but the material is there. it's all natural products. i encourage everyone to the take advantage of that and the yard trim composting that you have. >> what are the programs involving your best friends at home? >> yeah, so presently we have a campaign and the department of the nier is called all that i
5:43 am
want for christmas is you. the department is offering a reduced rate for adopting a cat or dog. there are other animals that require or would love to have a home as well with. some ferrets, turtles and ha hamsters. that's a reduced price. i would encourage you to down county 311 and then they of course offer other programs like education and outreach on how to socialize the animals and proper care. they're looking for volunteers. >> okay. right back with the prince george's department of environment. thanks for that advice and recycling on news years days. back with what made headlines in 2015 and what is coming ahead. happy pi new year.
5:45 am
"side bread?" because there's nothing "side" about this bread. it may look like the moon. but it's the star of the show. unleash the power of dough. give it a pop. that sound. like nails on a chalkboard. but listen to this: (family talking) that's a different kind of sound. the sound of the weekend. unleash the power of dough. give it a pop.
5:46 am
and good morning, welcome back to view and good morning welcome back to viewpoint. we're going to get into the time machine and look to the future to 2016 to my right is joe madison of sirus radio and then bryan of hr and then we're going to look ahead to 2016. when do you think is the big story there, and try to do it without using trump. >> oh. it was the walter reed development. they have broke ground. that project is a $200 million
5:47 am
project for the trump hotel and can you imagine if that happens and he gets the nomination for the republican party, that's a big story in 2016. >> if he opens and the mayor and police chief do not get the crime uchbd corral. i think that this is an issue that the major has to keep an eye on. i think that the mayor is going to have an issue on the hands. we have already talked this whole year about the body cameras and handling the video and if it's going to be made public. i think crime and the things with body cameras comes back up. i think that they will have to address that and have to be a
5:48 am
big issue in 2016. >> when you say crime, let me ask you something. when the student was stbed ab t death in metro and then another one shot in a gun battle. do you think that crime sob the minds or radar of people of like that lineals as we walk through the city? you go out at night and it's wall to wall. look what is happening a street. it's become there. crime is always going to be on the minds of people and i don't think that's going to be the headline for 2016. it will lead to the news. >> i think gain and if the crime
5:49 am
keeps on ticking up you have to connect the way that the city is transformed. we know that the city is getting richer and the fomings are concerned with the gun violence than on capital hill. once the property values go up, if crime goes up, that's the issue here. >> whatever the issue, they're going to be front and center. it's going to be vincent gray that just got out of a deep deep hole because of the allegations that were leveled against him in the mayor contest and we all know the allegations. when it was finally time to produce, they did not have a case. the mayor is off. that does not mean that he is free, but he is free to come back and challenge in four years. he is tree go get on the counsel if he wishes and making statements of her and her
5:50 am
organizations and administrat n administration, so watch out. >> interesting. what else? >> well i think that the pep oil merger is going to come to a head. i interviewed the mayor this week and i said why did you change the position? she said that she did not change the position but did not like the initial deal. she said that she was able to go from a $14 million to $78 million as it relates to the deal for the district of columbia and that the corporate headquarters is going to be in northern virginia and maryland. i think that the other big story is what happens to the fbi bill because that's -- they have got the city has big plans for the fbi building.
5:51 am
5:53 am
and welcome back. we were talking about what's going to happen to the fbi building, that it's going to be torn down, it might. what do we think about that? what's going to go in there? >> well that's all right. go ahead. >> i was just talking about the space right now. i have something to say about i have somebody to say on where it's going. i have something to say on the space. they want to put in retail and put a tax base. that's the perfect opportunity for the city to create more taxes coming in. they can knock the building coming down and i don't think that you can find a person that likes that building or the way that it looks.
5:54 am
>> no. >> >> and thn the issue of the j edgar building. i think that it's great to put on pennsylvania avenue and we have the folks walking more and that's a great opportunity there instead of outside with withe development. >> the senior development knows where the body and money is buried has more than 300 million nor a relocation effort. the clear in tent is that she wants the money spent in maryland where they are two sites proposed and one in virginia. i said do you know if this is going to maryland? she did not want to comment and backed off. some people think that this may take them to the individual but it maybe virginia. >> i am downtown in city center and i wish that there were more
5:55 am
development and housing in that inner city that was more affordable. am i the only person that thinks that you have to be really rich to live downtown? >> no. >> the mayor wants the roll out a comprehensive plan for homeless citizen. it's for those that have property to put them in. she intends for it to be spread out and not in the focus but just one side of the town. she did go into detail and how
5:56 am
could the average citizen help? listen you do what the first lady said. if you have a landlord and there's room, there maybe help there for you. there's a plan that's going to roll out in 2016. >> another problem is walking through the area and you can tell that most of them are mentally ill. it's not just getting them a home but treatment. >> yeah, that's came up also. the city got a $9 million grant to deal with the mentally ill and identify those on the streets and get them help. that's part of the roll out in 23016. >> that's great. >> probably could squeeze in a story -- >> you have 15 seconds. >> hol land, edwards and the race is going to be big. i think that -- >> the elephant in the room is
