meteorologist doug kammerer and you've been updating this forecast and things are definitely in flux. most certainly. we'll continue to see temperatures on the roller coaster, so to speak and yesterday close to 70 degrees and we're only in the low to mid-40s and a 25-degree temperature drop and now we'll see the temperatures go right back up tomorrow, but first the rain is going to fall and we're starting to see showers along the region and big traffic delays on 272 and more rain down toward the south and this is all moving towards the north and we'll continue to do so out ahead of this big storm system. this is a monster system. we'll have much more on this coming up in a few minutes and here's the rain and the snow back toward chicago. for us, it will be all rain, but there is some frozen precipitation very close to our area just up to the north and we'll talk much more about that and then it's the temperatures and only in the 40s and 40 in hagerstown and 45, d.c. and still 60 in virginia beach and the warm air moves back in before we finally set in to a

colder period. we've got all of that coming up over the next hour or so and we'll continue to keep you posted right here on storm center. doug, at the live desk we're tracking the storm in the country's midsection and the five-day span, everything from flooding to blizzards to tornadoes that killed 43 people. 11 died when as many as nine tornadoes touched down in dallas and out in storm is moving north. the western part of the state could see a foot of snow while the east could see ten inches of rain and heavy flooding and the storm will wreak havoc on chicago with the mix of snow, ice and rain that could last before the storm starts to wrap up and drops more snow on upper new england. barbara? >> thank you, scott. >> we have breaking news now. a grand jury decides to indict two cleveland police officers in the shooting death of tam irrice. >> a news conference the

prosecutor blamed the 12-year-old's death on a perfect storm of human error. the boy was carrying a pellet gun in the park of 2014. officers say the toy gun looked like the real thing. prosecutors say newly enhanced video says rice was removing that gun from the waistband when he was shot. police are having for your help in finding a teenager from maryland who has been missing for more than a week. her name is karen sandoval and she's 14 years old. she hasn't been seen in eight days. the last time was in college park around 5:00 in the morning. we just shared her picture on the nbc washington facebook page. new information this afternoon about the deaths of two teenagers in woodbridge last october. 17-year-old india davis stabbed 17-year-old lyle ferringer to death and then took her own life. their bodies were found inside a minivan on hamilton drive after being reported missing by their

families. the murder is the ninth for prince william county this year. this is chris gordon in falls church, virginia. fairfax county police charge a suspect in the christmas morning murder that left the victim stabbed and dying right here on the sidewalk on trail run road. police have charged 34-year-old santos osorio of falls church. police say osorio was arguing with a man he knew at this house on camp elger avenue. investigators say the argument became a fight and the victim 22-year-old edgar armando serrano fled on foot. they fatally stabbed him with a sharp object. >> they were able to identify who the suspect was and they located him in his home in the falls church area and took him into custody and he was taken to jail and charged with murder. >> all new at 5:00, we're learning new information and ahead we'll tell you what the two men were arguing about and

that led to the murder case. back to you. >> we're learning more about the local man who was killed on an atv while taking his step daughter for a ride. jerome odom died in capital heights when an suv crashed into an atv he and his step daughter were riding. the suv hit the atv. odom and his step daughter were not wearing helmets and the teenager is still in the hospital with serious injuries. prince george's county police say it is illegal to ride atvs on county roads. money problems may cause a church in prince george's county to close. the new horizons christian faith church is seeing hard times following the death of a major supporter. in fact, members of the church got an eviction notice and church leaders have made major improvements over the property over the 13 years they've occupied it and don't want to be thrown out. they'll be in court tomorrow where they hope to resolve the

situation. two days after yet another police shooting in chicago. mayor rahm emanuel is cutting short his vacation and announcing new reforms. they include mandatory 30-day desk duty for officers involved in shootings and an immediate review to dealing with people with a mental health crisis. on saturday officers shot and killed a teenager and a grandmother while they were responding to a domestic disturbance. a 19-year-old man was home from college. he was killed along with the woman who lived downstairs who was caught in the cross fire. they're offering their deepest condolenc condolences, but relatives s say -- >> what about tasers? don't start shooting innocent people! >> the young man that was shot was allegedly threatening his father with a baseball bat and police say his behavior was combative, but his mother says he developed a mental illness in october and just needed help.

midnight. so more of this wacky, crazy weather and mid-50s at 7:00 a.m. and more rain, too. that rain will be moderate and even heavy in pockets in just a few minutes and meteorologist doug kammerer will take you hour by hour tomorrow. >> all right, v.j. in news health this afternoon mammograms are still the most common way to screen for breast cancer and a less expensive ultrasound is also effective. research followed 3,000 patients who had methods. it found a greater number of invasive cancers than mammograms did especially in women with dense breasts and on the down side there were more false positives with ultrasound. despite the findings, ultrasound should not necessarily replace a malm bram. the marine corps could be in for a major change in uniforms. it would eliminate the desert camouflage uniforms from daily wear although marines would still wear camis on deployments or on the field. it surveyed marines this summer

right now at 4:15, storm team 4 tracking spotty showers locally this evening and more rain on the way overnight. chief meteorologist doug kammerer joins us in two minutes with the timing and a look ahead to the rest of this week. but first, folks in the midwest are bracing for yet another night of wild weather. >> it's been bad out there as chris pollone reports, plane have been dodging tornados to snowstorms. >> reporter: in dallas northeast of dallas the damage assessment and cleanup is under way. >> the whole ceiling and roof right there gone. it's all in the living room. everywhere. >> reporter: nine tornadoes struck texas over the weekend, killing at least 11. >> everything happened in seconds. >> the tornado that hit garland was an ef-4 packing winds up to 200 miles per hour and hundreds

moving in. take a look outside. the clouds have been here and we have not seen much in the way of sun at all over the last week or so, but today, actually the coldest day that we've seen so far. 45 degrees and winds out of the east at about 13 miles per hour and we'll continue to see those winds pick up overnight tonight and right on through tomorrow morning and the temperatures they'll start to rise and only 39 right now in gaithersburg and 40 in hagerstown. we are dealing with some very cool air. as far as the radar is concerned not much going on in the region and a few showers and sprinkles and that's really going to be about it in our area and you can see the wider view here and notice the pinks and garrett county and franklin and fulton county under a winter weather advisory and those two counties in pennsylvania and no worries for us, as you know, temperatures are on the rise as you see all of us moving up. these are all of the different advisories. winter storm watches and winter storm watches and flood warnings and flood watches and tornado watches down towards parts of

florida and an incredible amount of rain and that continues to fall here and snow up from chicago and up towards minneapolis and this is a monster storm for sure. for us, however, it's just going to be rain over the next 12 to 16 hours or so and the rain is starting to move in by 7:00, 8:00 and look what happens by 11:00. most of this on the light to moderate side and we will start to see heavier rain and moving in just in time for the morning rush and the yellows and the oranges around manassas and westminster and these will come right through during the rush hour and you'll need extra time tomorrow morning for sure. remember that, by around 10:00, starting to move out from the western zones into the eastern zones and then it's out of here by 2:00, 3:00 and we may see sunshine that will help temperatures to boost into the mid to upper 60s across the region and temperatures down by 25 degrees and tomorrow, we'll be right back up and 25 degrees to where they are today. the rain for sure tomorrow

>> new this afternoon, this is a wow. a man now says he lied when he linked washington national's first baseman ryan zimmerman and other athletes to performance-enhancing drugs. today charlie sly recanted his entire story. he used to work in an indiana-based clinic. the major league baseball tell us the washington post it will still conduct a thorough investigation into the players that were named in that report. meantime the nationals have released a statement supporting zimmerman, quote, ryan has unequivocally stated that these allegations are false, the learner family and our organization fully support him and we're confident that the reports levied in the report are unfounded. that same report names veteran nfl quarterback peyton manning. it says he used human growth hormones while recovering from a neck injury in 2011.

developing right now at 4:30. people from oklahoma city to chicago are bracing for some nasty weather that has already caused at least 43 deaths in the past five days and in about 15 minutes we'll look at the mixture of snow, rain and wind can impact holiday travel for a lot of folks. but first, meteorologist veronica johnson is in the storm center. >> that i am and the roads will get sloppy around here, but nothing like what we've seen over other parts of the country all of the way up to areas in the midwest and of course, new england. around here it's all about the rain showers and road conditions for the evening and we still get a green light and generally light and still fairly scattered and you start feeling late and by the time we deal with the overnight, more moderate rain and the wind will start picking up, too. and we get more moderate conditions by the weather there and by early tomorrow morning just downright sloppy with pockets of heavy rain and more cautionary conditions and you'll want to get an early start. and showers from the southwest

standing in an intersection in fresno saturday morning waiting for a ride to work. that's when two white men pulled up and started cursing at him. they then got out of the car and started beating him. during the assault one of the suspects asked the victim, quote, why are you here? police believe the man was attacked because he was wearing a turban. >> sometimes it takes you back to the middle east and sometimes the terrorists are wearing turbans. we can sometimes confuse the sikhs with those terrorists. >> since this is being called a hate crime, the fbi and homeland security will likely get involved in this case. one woman survived a deadly shooting during a live tv broadcast in virginia and she is about to go back to where it all happened. vicky gardner is finished with her surgeries and plans to go back to work next month. reporter allison parker was interviewing parker when one of parker's coworkers shot and killed her and cameraman adam

after lunchtime and the rain will end at 1:00, 2:00 and the rain will be pushing through the southeast to southern maryland and the weather will have a low to moderate impact on our area with the bulk of the rain coming early and it's going to be mild. our temperatures are way up from today and today when we're in the mid-40s so you can see they're rising as we head into early tomorrow morning and at 7:00 a.m. where it's 58 degrees at 11:00 a.m. and low to mid-60s at 1:00 to about 3:00, 4:00 during the afternoon and when the rain ends, here is the future weather and there is a look at your tuesday and 7:00 a.m. and it quickly moves out and we could even see clearing take place with the mostly cloudy sky before the sun sets tomorrow and then some more rain, but wednesday afternoon when we get that next little wave coming through, this really is the main area that's going to see the showers. >> annapolis, leonardtown and even then we'll have a median impact on our area and not a lot

meteorologists who are tracking the rain we have here and the wild travel conditions across our country. i'm chris lawrence. a holiday party ends with a violent attack and now we're learning about how a tattoo may have been the motive for murder. no charges for the police officers for the killing of a 12-year-old boy with a toy gun. we'll start with the deadly storm that spawned tornados in texas and caused heavy rain across the country's midsection. 25 people have been killed and more than 1400 flights have been canceled across the u.s. and this large storm is spreading snow and ice as it hits the midwest and the northeast. and coverage begins with meteorologist doug kammerer and veronica johnson. and as that storm system heads our way we'll see the potential to see more rain and the severe weather stays to the west. >> it is a big system taking on so much of the country and snowy areas of the mreft and we'll

talk about travel in just a few minutes. let's take a look at the rain moving in across our area and most of this on the lighter side and light activity and back out toward gainsville and back toward the hay market area and down to fredericksburg and we'll see more rain overnight and some of that rain will become heavy and here's a big part of the storm system from since nat toe the atlanta area and all of this moving our way and this is what's going to be coming into our region moving up by 95 and more moisture coming off the gulf of mexico and coming off the well and ibning more warm temperature temperatures, as well. we're on the cold side and 32 in state college and they may see some freezing rain and snow there. 45 in washington and 57 in virginia beach and that warm air will move in overnight and temperatures tomorrow, 20 to 25 degrees warmer than they were this afternoon and we'll talk about this and the rain and what to expect in the income couple of days in just a couple of minutes. >> thank you, doug. s
