it's supposed to be a safe place for kids to play. >> but a man was found dead, stabbed to death on a playground. tonight police say they have strong leads on a suspect. we're going to begin tonight with breaking news. fires on the tracks, riders evacuated. this all happening tonight at the glenmont metro station. >> it just reopened in the past hour. news4's jackie benson is there on the scene to tell what's happened. >> reporter: that's right, chris. the station has been given the all clear. it is reopened at this time. here is what we have been told. reports of smoke in the tunnel prompted a very large fire department presence here just before 9:00 tonight. we're told there was a train close to the station at the time the smoke was discovered, and that is always a concern in terms of passenger safety. >> when units arrived on the scene here, they did encounter some smoke in the platform area in the station. the station was evacuated. one of the trains that had been

at the platform was moved on its way. evacuated the station, essentially, as the firefighters further investigated. they did find they had smoke and the report of an issue in a tunnel. >> reporter: we're told the fire department did ventilation fans that cleared a lot of the smoke out of the tunnel for a while there was a bus bridge between this station and forest glen. jackie benson, news4. right now a weather system that dumped all that snow on the southwest is now threatening the northeast. >> yeah, 2015 definitely going out with a bang. dan scheinman picks up the story. >> reporter: millions of people are under winter storm warnings. in iowa, some roads were closed when as much as a foot of snow fell. in oklahoma, thousands of people were left without power because of the winter storm. one family thankful for a generator. >> we have the heater hooked up in the refrigerator. so the bare necessities.

>> reporter: chicago's o'hare airport is one of the transportation hubs where weather stranded travelers. but 5,000 flights were canceled or delayed. >> my flight was canceled. i didn't find out until i got here. >> reporter: this is part of the same system that dumped up to two feet of snow on new mexico. and the system is now moving northeast where people are ready for the first winter storm of the season. >> snow blower is ready. snow tires are on. we're good to go. >> reporter: 12 inches of snow could fall in some parts of new england. dan scheinman, nbc news. back here in our area. we're just starting to see and more importantly feel the real signs of winter. >> rain and damp and cold and wind. if that doesn't say december in washington, i don't know what does. how is it going to look the rest of the week? >> it is just plain nasty out there. right now we've got the rain coming in. a little bit of wind and windchills that have been in the low to mid-30s earlier this evening. definitely feeling a little bit more like winter. but it is rain. the radar lit up in green, not white right now. you can see the rain making its

way in across the region. anywhere you see the darker greens, especially the yellows and the oranges. that is the moderate to heavy rain right now in through fredrick county, towards fauquier county, right through the beltway. we're going to see this rain develop right on through the night tonight. here is the back edge of it, and we're waiting for all of this to move through the area. waking up, walking out the door, going to be a little bit of rain out there. give yourselves some extra time. temperatures around 65 degrees. this should be an early day rain. by late in the afternoon, nice and warm. look at the temperatures, back into the 60s. but it does get cold as we start the new year. i've got that forecast for you in just a few minutes. we have a developing story in this evening. a man has died after he was shot in the 2200 block of hartford street in southeast. it happened just before 6:00 this evening. the victim's name is darnell mayfield. police have not made any arrests. but this is not the first homicide on this block this year. another man was shot and killed here in march.

an a arrest was made in that case. prince george's police are hoping to make an arrest soon after a man was stabbed to death on a playground. >> the victim's body was found today in lanham right behind gaywood elementary school. news4's darcy spencer was there tonight with the details. darcy, what are you hearing? >> reporter: so far prince george's county police have cleared the scene. the body was found here in the playground area behind that elementary school. earlier this evening, a man who lives in the neighborhood came to the scene seeking answers. he says his disabled son is missing, and he is very concerned he could be the victim of this violent crime. the man was stabbed to death in the basketball court area behind gaywood elementary school in the lanham section of prince george's county. douglas reyes came to the scene concerned because he had not heard from his disabled son. concerned that he could have been hurt. >> some people might want to steal something, think that he

has money or cell phone or something. he has a cell phone. he is not answering. >> reporter: police say there were witnesses to the stabbing, and they had strong leads in the investigation. they got the call around 4:00 in the afternoon and got here quickly. >> we have strong suspect lead however, we don't have anyone right now. >> in custody? >> right. >> reporter: detectives are working to figure out what led up to the stabbing and the motive. school was not in session because of the winter break. >> there were some other individuals in the area. they called us. but we can say that the victim is not a student of the school. >> reporter: prince george's county police have not yet identified the victim in this case. now the brother of that missing man came out here to the scene just a short time ago. he tells me that the family is just distraught. they still have not found him, and they do plan to have a vigil here at the school tomorrow night at 8:00. back to you. >> thanks, darci. tonight a woman is warning

her neighbors that a man tried to sexual assault her in bloomingdale. she says it happened last tuesday night on her way hope from the schaub metro station. he snatched her purse, pushed her into a stairway and tried to take off her shirt. but he ran away when she started screaming. the woman didn't get a good look at him, but wrote about him in a blog. we have new video tonight of the chaos on the beltway this weekend as a group of more than 100 dirt bike, street bikes and atv riders took over that road. you can see from the video that the bikers brought traffic to a stand still at one point. they did burnout, popped wheelies, even drove the wrong direction on this busy holiday travel day. a different video sent to us by a viewer shows dozens of dirt bikes and atvs on the street and sidewalk in noma. an atv is at the center of a family tragedy in prince george's county. jerome odom was on an atv last night when he was hit by an suv

in capital heights. odom was killed. his teenaged stepdaughter who was also on board was seriously hurt. neither one of them was wearing helmets. he we should point out it's illegal to drive an atv on county-maintained roads. a cyclist is dead after being hit on a busy road in rockville. an suv hit the cyclist at veers mill and turkey branch parkway. that intersection still shut down. the driver did stay on the scene. and you can still see the bike underneath the suv. a crash reconstruction team is there now to figure out how this happened. tonight tamir rice's family says they're sad, but not surprised by a grand jury's decision. no charges will be filed against police officers for the death of their 12-year-old son. a grand jury spent two months listening to testimony and looking at evidence and decided not to indict two cleveland police officers. one of them shot rice as he reached for a pellet gun. prosecutors say it was missing its bright orange cap and looked like a real weapon.

this teenager from maryland has been missing for more than week, and tonight there is a desperate plea to help find her. karen sandoval is 14 years old. prince george's county police say she was last seen eight days ago on a sunday morning in college park. we're sharing sandoval's picture on our nbc washington facebook page. and new tonight, we have learned that a germantown man is now facing charges in connection to a deadly shooting thattee curred there earlier this month. robert king was found shot to death on sage way december 16th. police now say he was doing a drug deal when they got into an argument, both pulled guns and fired. both were hit. nyash was found at a hospital seeking treatment. he was arrested on gun and drug charges. he could face more charges. a man convicted of stabbing two people near a metro station will be sentenced tomorrow. prosecutors say reginald cooper yelled profanities last december before he attacked two men at a bus stop outside the rockville station. both victims survived and cooper is facing up to 60 years in

prison. and new at 11:00, a new pilot program in loudoun county. it aims to prevent heroin overdose deaths. 31 deputies have been trained to use a new nasal form of nacan, a drug that reversions the effect of oxycodone. this program will run in the western part of loudoun county because it is more rural out there. >> i'm loving it. i love surprises. >> i can't wait. i can't wait. i can't wait. i was so happy that they got in to play. >> tonight redskins fans are pumped to be going back to the play-offs. and the team is about to cash in on all that excitement. starting tomorrow, redskins stores are expected to start selling official nfc east division champions gear. what do you do with all the holiday gift cards that you may never use? you could regift them or turn them into cash. we'll tell i don't how. talk about lost and found. we'll show you a veritable war

very chilly rain continuing to fall right now across the area. you can see the rain and some of the heaviest rain coming through overnight, right on through early tomorrow morning. i'll be back in just a couple of minutes, let you know what to expect tomorrow morning, and how long the warmer weather, yes, the warmer weather is coming back. well, gift cards have ballooned into a $32 billion a year business with about half of shoppers saying they plan to buy one this year, according to consumer reports. but what if you get a gift card and you don't want it?

erika gonzalez tells you how to get rid of it. >> reporter: you can buy store gift cards almost anywhere. but not everybody likes to get them. >> i got a gift card to this clothing store that i had no interest in. so i just gave it to my little sister. >> reporter: another way to get rid of gift cards, trade them for cash at one of the many gift card exchange websites out there. consumer reports todd marks looked at four of them. >> these websites buy your cards at less than face value and resell them. that means you get less, sometimes a lot less than they're worth at the store. >> reporter: for example, a $100 toys r us gift card gets $80.50 at gift cards.com. but shrinks to $50 at monstergiftcard.com. >> we looked at 13 different store gift cards and found that gift cards.com gave us the most money back. but it still pays to shop around. because paybacks differ from site to site and from card to card. >> reporter: you'll generally get more cash back from gift

unwrapped drone. people told us they realized immediately they left something behind. but waited until today to pick it up so they wouldn't miss their flight. >> you didn't think you had time to go back? >> i clearly didn't have time to go back to get back on the train, go back, go through security, come back through security again with my wife. wouldn't have made it. >> tsa records show this year alone the agency has recovered 500 laptop computers at dulles. car sharing services like uber and lyft have become so popular they now have their own designated space on the airport property. the idea is a faster trip for you. but many don't realize it will cost a little bit more there is now a $4 airport surcharge every time you ride, whether you're being dropped off or picked up at reagan national or at dulles. a lot of travellers say they don't mind. the convenience is worth the extra charge. >> all our luggage fit and the seats were nice and big. so i'm not complaining. >> traditional cab companies have complained about the new

privileges for uber and lyft. the airport authority says if it works for customers, it works for them. and we have posted a link to the new rules for ride shares and limos at the local airports. just open up the nbc washington app and search ride share. >> man. you were talking than weather. my brother-in-law was flying back to chicago tonight. >> yeah. >> two flights canceled. it was -- >> no problems here. it was chicago and everywhere else. >> and that's really a huge problem up and down the east coast, the midwest, back towards the west. and that is really a monster storm that is copping on through here. for us, as it has been for the past couple of weeks and months, the storms that are so big out west did give us the rain and actually bring us warmer temperatures. right now, though, it'sm. very chilly across the region that picture kind of says it all. it is nasty outside. we got a little bit of wind out there. temperatures, though, have risen over the past hour. up to 42 now. winds out of the northeast at 12 miles per hour. still give us a windchill.

39 in culpeper. now the temperatures will start to rise overnight. but it's going to take some time to do so. very hard to get the cold air out of our region. now you can see what is happening. some very heavy rain continuing to fall now. steady rain around the d.c. metro area. but we do have heavier rain in through western parts of fairfax, in through loudoun county, montgomery county. all seeing that rain right now. if you don't have to go out, it's a good night to stay indoors. we're going to continue to see the rain moving on through. that's that warm direction. that's why we're going see those numbers go in. here is where the heaviest rain is. down to the south. and that's what is going to be moving in over the next few hours, right on into early tomorrow morning. it will affect your morning rush. we'll take you through hour by hour. future weather, at 11:00, everybody seeing the rain. by 7:00 in the morning still dealing with the rain tomorrow. you'll need the umbrella when you step out the door. you'll need to give yourself a tlelitxtra time. the roads will definitely be a little on the slick side. notice by 10:00, most of the

area, especially west of 95 dry. some rain down towards the south and east. down towards southern maryland, around the northern neck, that's really about it. by 1:00, we may break out into sunshine. then we're talking about a much different day. the first part of the day, that's the day we're going to be dealing with the rain. stepping out the front door, a little bit of wind too. that's why you want to take the heavy umbrella, although you're not going to need it all that much during the day tomorrow. only for the first few hours. take the jacket. a little cool. the rain boots, that's probably a necessity. the rain umbrella for a little while there is the rain early tomorrow. but again, 1:00 and 4:00, notice the temperatures. really skyrocketing from where they were today, back into the mid-60s. 63 by 1:00. temperature of 65 degrees by around 4:00 in tavern. a very nice tuesday afternoon after a fairly nasty rainy start. wednesday, most of the day looks dry. high temperature 56. we get to 53 on thursday. thursday night into friday, of course we're talking new year's eve here. really looking pretty good. it's going to be cool, but not

wednesday nfc north division. if the packers lose, they face the redskins. as for the vikings, they'll play the skins if they lose to the packers and if the seahawks lose to the cardinals. then there is seattle. they need to beat arizona this weekend, and they also need the packers to win over the vikings. and if that happens, they claim the top wild card spot. and they will play the redskins at fedexfield. >> how interest steelers working? moving on to college football now. keenan reynolds playing in his final game at navy. the midshipman hosting pittsburgh in the military bowl. and reynolds did a little bit of everything, showing off the arm there. an 11-yard touchdown. navy is up 21-7. later on, he is catching passes too. he has good hands. this a 47-yard game. it would set up another touchdown. the longest reception of the day for navy. and then we have seen this so many times in his four years for the midshipman, right up the gut. he had four total touchdowns in

this game. he led navy in passing yards, rushing yards, and receiving yards. he goes out a winner, 44-28. moving on to hockey now. going into their game against buffalo tonight, the capitals, they had two impressive streaks going for them. first off, they were winners of seven straight games. that improved to 8:00 tonight. the other one was john carlson who had played an impressive 412 consecutive games for the capitals. well, that streak ended. he was a late scratch tonight. alex ovechkin, the caps, they have the best record in all of hockey. and he got the scoring started. second period, the puck gets along the boards here. nicholas backstrom with a beautiful pass. 18th goal this season. caps are up 1-0. later on in the period, tom wilson hustling for the puck, gets it towards the net. and jay beagle, when he scores, the caps don't lose. they are 21-0-5 when he puts the puck in the net. the caps are up 2-0 here. check out this save by braden
