i'm happy to report not only are we seeing sunshine, but that rain has since now moved off to the east. we're looking at drying conditions here. i think our rain chances are done for the day. the thing that we're more concerned about is really if you're traveling, what kind of rain are we looking at or snow? even all the way up through new england. you can see some of that mixed precipitation coming from upstate new york and maine. for us, again, we are looking dry. temperatures challenged. right now we're in the 40s. areas of the eastern shore and annapolis around 50. we'll talk about the daytime highs coming up. winter weather moving into the northeast is the latest problem for travelers. hundreds of flights were canceled since sunday leaving many people stranded. david culver is live at reagan airport along with some frustrated travelers. good morning. >> reporter: that's right. good morning to you. they have the christmas tree up, holiday music, but folks here, passengers not feeling in the

holiday spirit. they're tired. they're frustrated. you can't really blame them given many of them have spent the last 24 hours just trying to get home. >> where did you sleep? >> i haven't slept yet. >> it was a little after 5:30 in the morning. we first caught up with sarah pauley, sprawled out on the airport bench. three cancellations in the past 24 hours. she's dreaming of being home. >> we're just like can you get us to texas? if you can't get us to dallas, get us to austin, san antonio, houston, something. those are close cities to where i'm trying to go. still can't get us there. >> reporter: she's not alone. we found this man keeping close to the heat vent as he napped. tablet by his side, this guy curled up on the baggage claim conveyor belt. even the luggage has nowhere to go. among the destinations feeling far away today, chicago. the departure board showed the first four out of five flights canceled or delayed.

virginia governor terry mcauliffe is calling republican threats to pull his security detail. attorney general mark herring announced last week that virginia will no longer recognize concealed carry permits from 25 other states. in response, state senator charles ceraco told a bristol newspaper that he is considering a budget that will cut money for the governor's guards. soon president obama will be wrapping up his vacation in hawaii and head back here. last night he had some drama when a drone flew by his motor cade. the secret service jumped in and questioned the man at the controls. he said he had no clue the president would be there. the man was not detained or charged. the redskins are heading back to the playoffs. the team is ready to cash in on some of that excitement. starting today, redskins stores, dick's and modell's sporting goods stores starting to sell division east champion gear.

after a messy morning out there, the afternoon looks so much better. we'll get some sunshine out there. that's that big yellow ball that we haven't seen in quite some time in the sky. few showers tomorrow, looking less and less likely that we'll see organized precipitation. a seasonable start to 2016. temperatures in the 40s. rainfall totals for the last event that we had over the last 24 hours, we picked up a half inch of rain in d.c. now, highs today, it does look like we could hit 60 degrees. this forecast is tricky. areas to the south will be in the low 60s. areas to the north staying in the 50s. the reason why, we got to get

out of belgium, two people were arrested for plotting a terror attack. belgium prosecutors say the suspects were planning to target symbolic sites on new years. when police searched the

edward laurence has the latest. >> reporter: weather is causing delays across the country, but specifically airport workers will see some delays as they try to go to work through the airport security area. the tsa announced that they are increasing random screening for airport workers and airport employees. the move comes after incidents over the past two years where employees smuggled weapons and laundered money into airports. in one case last year five employees were arrested after bringing $400,000 in cash through boston's logan airport. a year ago a delta baggage handler was charged with bringing guns to a smuggler on several occasions in january, an faa employee used his badge to bring a gun in his carry-on luggage. the tsa says that these extra screening measures are already in place so employees coming to the airport can expect delays.

on capitol hill, edward laurence, back to. many of you have returned home for the holidays, but did you leave anything behind? the tsa says it has recovered a large amount of lost valuables from local airports. we've been inside the agency's lost and found room in dulles international, we've seen everything from coats, belts, a laptop computer, and somebody forget their new unwrapped drone. some of you told news 4 you realized you left stuff behind but time was against you. >> clearly didn't have time to go back and get back on the train, go back, go through security, come back through security again with my wrife. we wouldn't have made it. this year alone, the agency recovered 500 laptop computers at dulles international airport. a developing story in the district. police investigating a deadly shooting in southeast. police found darnell mayfield's body on hartford street southeast last night no suspect information has been released.

new details now in the officer-involved shooting death of 12-year-old tamir rice. he is the cleveland boy police shot after mistaking his pellet gun for a weapon. a grand jury decided not to indict them. the review could come with punishment. and a new pilot program in loudoun county aimed to prevent heroin deaths. 21 deputies have been trained into using narcan which can be a life saving tool when seconds count. new today, people are buying ticket now for the first ever circular high speed train. the rail line is on an island in china. it opens tomorrow. and the people in charge there are hoping it boosts tourism sales. they're giving away some tickets at a discount through the end of next month. after the break, a story that has a lot of us saying wow.

we are just now getting information about an arrest made in monday's murder investigation. this at a park. a man was found stabbed to death behind gaywood elementary school monday afternoon. and this man that you see on your screen, 31-year-old alex james jones has been arrested. he's in police custody charged with first degree murder. as soon as we get more information we'll bring it to you. from the live desk, erika gonzalez. >> my scout master went into a cave and a bear is after him. >> he can't get out because of where the bear is or he's too injured? >> i think the bear is on top of him. >> this morning we're hearing how some boy scouts sprang into

starting this friday it's ill leg for businesses that serve food to use products made out of styrofoam. the former mayor signed off on the bill to ban styrofoam last year, but it will become law in 2016. the measure means that restaurants, carry-outs and food trucks have to use recyclable containers and cups. we all know that a lot of you are celebrating from the holidays, but there's some things that you got that you don't necessarily want, right, erika? >> that's right. sometimes we're talking about gift cards. they have ballooned into a $32 billion a year business.
