details. >> reporter: that victim has been identified as katherine alvarado. she was 20 years old. just a short time ago, i was able to speak to a family friend. you're going to hear from her in just a moment. she tells us that the mom of the victim is too distraught to speak to us on camera. now, police have not made any arrests in this case, but they do tell us that they do not believe that this was a random killing. a jogger found katherine's body just off the trail new year's morning, and the family had seen her on new year's eve night. when her mom knocked on her bedroom door yesterday morning, she realized she was not there. that's when she notified police. they started piecing things together and realized that she was, in fact, the woman who was found on the trail behind rosa parks elementary school yesterday. let's hear now from that family friend. >> katherine was such a sweet little girl that we all loved, and we are very shocked what

happened. the last time i saw her was on the 30th. we were heading to church, and this totally has taken us, you know, unexpected. >> reporter: police are offering up to a $25,000 reward for information that helps solve this case. megan, back to you. >> now to a developing story in pennsylvania. just a few minutes ago, police announced that they found the body of a 5-year-old autistic boy in allentown. police say jaleel batista ran away from a party just before midnight on new year's eve. the allentown police chief says crews found a tablet computer and some water in a local park this afternoon, and shortly after, they found the body of batista in the water. a medical examiner will now perform an autopsy to figure out when the boy entered the water. and damage assessments and cleanups are under way in the

midwest after days of devastating floods. as nbc's chris pallone shows us, cities further south are bracing for a powerful surge heading their way. >> reporter: in arnold, missouri, it's a day for drying out. >> it's at least three feet deep. well, two feet. >> reporter: the town, wedged between the meramec and the mississippi rivers inundated after storms dumped ten inches of rain upstream. it left 150 homes underwater. at least 11 levies have given way. 24 people are dead and two remain missing. >> they keep calling it the hundred year flood, i call it the ten year flood because it keeps coming around. >> reporter: the governors of illinois and missouri have been out surveying the damage. >> just as we stood together to assist during the response phase, now we stand ready to work to ensure this region can recover as quickly as possible and families can get back on their feet. >> reporter: the coast guard is watching from the air, looking for people who might be stranded.

at war with islam. we're working to learn more about a house fire that broke out this afternoon in northwest. firefighters got the call just after noon for a fire on 15th street. not too far from scott circle. crews quickly extinguished the fire, and officials say nobody was injured. it's still not clear as to what started the fire. the district is dealing with a recent spike in violent crimes. 162 people were killed in 2015. d.c. police say they have a 62% closure rate for homicides, but that number includes murders that happened in 2015 and past years. centerville road was shut down for nearly two hours after this car hit a utility pole, leaving wires down across the road. traffic had to be rerouted while crews cleaned up the mess and fixed the pole. this happened near old mill road. all lanes of centerville road are back open except for one

southbound lane. no word yet if anyone was injured. two people have died after a new year's day a.t.v. crash. the harper county sheriff's office says two men were driving separate atvs at around 1:00 a.m. in pilesville, maryland, deputies say the men knew each other and had been celebrating the new year at a home near the crash scene. investigators are still trying to figure out how this all happened. president obama's new gun control push is triggering a fierce debate. we went to a packed local gun show to find out how some folks feel about the proposed crackdown. and the question is are you feeling lucky? one of power balls largest jackpots, just hours away. >> with lows in washington dipping into the low 30s and 20s in the suburbs. wait until you see the temperatures for monday and tuesday. the coldest air
