a developing story we're flog this morning. d.c. police are combing through a car they believe was connected to a new year's eve hit-and-run. it could be the one that was involved in a crash. they hope that will lead them to a suspect. we're also following a developing story. meanwhile israeli police are on high alert as they search for the gunmen. police raided the suspect's house yesterday. family meds say he was a troubled man with a record. the motive for the shooting is still unclear. the white house says it is not ready to impose sanctions against iran for ballistic missile launches. they say they have more diplomatic and technical work to do. the u.s. is considering a number of sanctions. lawmakers have criticized the president for delaying

punishment of iran. and happening today as president obama returns to washington and prepares to issue an executive order on gun control, a very popular gun show continues for a second day in our region. this was the scene yesterday in the parking lot. it was completely packed. and lines, they were out the door at the dulles expo center. he wants to make it tougher for americans to buy and sell guns. >> there is a lot more people in the show than i have seen in a long time. they've actually opened the other side of the venue. has it had an impact. i think it has had a pretty big impact on the sales. >> the president may try to stop people on the terror watch list from illegally buying firearms. and at a rally donald trump promised to veto any action taken by the president on gun control. he blamed the administration for the creation of the terror group isis.

stories. i'm erika gonzalez in d.c. it's a controversial proposal to raise traffic signs that has a lot of people talking about it because specifically this could impact 20 traffic offenses and among them this one was really a talker. a $1,000 fine for drivers going over 25 miles over the speed limit in an effort to bring traffic-related deaths down to zero by 2024. $1,000. which makes the ears stand up. but this is 25 miles over the speed limit. start with you, first? >> i see a big roadblock ahead. >> do you. >> not to pun too much. they say they want to do it to get down to fewer accidents. commendbling to mayor bowser and, frankly, raise a lot of money. there begins the problem. d.c. and maryland folks think this is a way for them to extract money from people

because there isn't a commuter tax. and then there's is there the authority? that ought to be a lot more discussion and hearings. it will be interesting to see how it plays out. >> bremante? >> they have 30 days to comment on it. >> i think they will comment on it. >> they sure will. the department of transportation obviously puts this under the umbrella of safety. when you talk about someone going 25 miles an hour over the speed limit, this is not good. when you jump from $300 to $1,000, that becomes an issue. >> why is it an issue? because they won't pay it? they don't have the funding for it? >> i think where the mayor falls on the right side of things they could say, listen, you can till someone. if you're going a certain speed folks will survive an accident and some won't from 300 dollar to $1,000. the focus is not so much on this

versus other things you're looking at. this becomes a pedestrian to motorist issue. if you go from $300 to $1,000, if you hit a pedestrian going across the street or a bus trying to change lanes, some of those issues, it really looks like a money grab. the mayor is really going to have to explain this better than saying, well, we're trying to lower pedestrian deaths and have a safer city. i think all cities want that, but i don't know that the numbers have to be so extreme. >> this is just doa. quite honestly, let's be honest. we already have people having difficulty paying parking fines at $50. >> right. >> number two, one of the things that drives drivers crazy, there ought to be laws against pedestrians who don't pay attention when they're in the crosswalks, jaywalking, watching

their ipads and their mobile devices. you know, i just don't think this is going go anywhere. and when you consider the fact that some people might suggest maybe what the mayor ought to be doing is signing some way to hire more police officers that can do more traffic control in a city that is becoming quiet congested with all the new development. but the bottom line on this, i think by the time the people -- and dave is right. this is an attempt because we can't tax marylanders and virginians. this is an attempt to extract money from them. the bottom line is we're all impacted by this. >> i was going say. it's going to affect city residents as well. overall they had something tuck aid way that wasn't going to be in there that they were going to

add 100 more traffic cameras and the d.o.t. said, oh, we didn't mean to have that in there. we don't know that we can make that decision. >> i this i the mayor is going to back off of that one on the first part of the year. >> just a final thing. congress has been very quiet with the city lately. they haven't gotten involved with rioters for the most part and intrusions. this could start with the maryland and virginia delegations and going on, you know. so there's a possibility that congress might get involved in this too. we'll have to wait and see. all right. speaking of maryland. i want to move to the state of maryland. advisers are called for changes to the song "maryland, my maryland." they're offering six different options to change it or do away with it altogether. joe, i'll start with you. >> it's so old-fashioned. it's so out of date. they call lincoln names in it. you know, this is a time -- if

people don't know why -- this was written because maryland was split, you know, half slave, half free. what was it the 1930s? >> they finally made it the official song burke they'd been singing it long before that. >> what was also going on in the 1930s historically, the rise of the ku klux klan. then when you consider they just changed the name of the stadium, i think this fits right into that whole scenario. >> they didn't have people like governor larry hogan who said, quote, this is political correction run amok. where do we stop? >> hogan's not being insulted. that's that donald trump thing. what is political correctness. when you are insulted, it's an issue. when someone else is being insulted, it's political correctness. my personal opinion, i think they ought to just go ahead and change it or do what virginia did, change the words. >> dave?

coming back now to report 'eers notebook we want to touch specifically on virginia, the new ceo of the alexandria chamber of comrce hoping to capitalize on the new way, on the new mgm grand over at the national harbor. you know, in some respects saying like, you know, we can sear it from here, it ooh knowset that far, how do we get in on a piece of that pie. >> i can see the moon. it doesn't make me an astronaut. >> is that feasible? >> look, look, look. we brought this up before.

when they build that mgm, you won't be able to see the river because anything inside a casino is going to be for that casino. they don't want gamblers across in alexandria. the best you can hope for is maybe a ferry or bus transportation, but i guarantee you that the move is going to be get to alexandria, park the buses, maybe go to mgm, and if you're likely to make money at mgm, you're going to be spending it at mgm. you're not to be spending it up and down spring street. i don't know what he wants. >> an estimated 20 million people a day to go in and out of mgm? >> the reality is they gierk be going in and out of lex ya.

i know what he's trying to do. good luck. but mgm is going make sure all that money is contained within that mgm building. >> joe says maybe if some get out with a little money in their pocket, they might take the bus ore and stroll through old town, alexandria. i thought what was interesting they mentioned the town of alexandria and the officials were concerned with the national harbor coming that it would affect alexandria in a negative way but it's actually helped that. if it's something they want, maybe it's tieing in some jobs, maybe it's getting alexandria jobs in the casino. it's a smart move. it's away of saying let's talk. >> jobs might be the issue. that might be the attraction there is getting jobs because they're going have to attract people from all over. >> that's right. >> it seems to me that things like the casinos are so

self-contained, i don't think they do much for anybody around, even maryland. like joe says, it's pretty much you go to the casino, stay in the casino, and yo do all of our your ancillary things over there. if they get a bus ride or ferry ride, maybe they put in to get alexandreriaens jobs, that's a good deal. but i'm not sure about that. we want to move to people living in the community and getting them out of their vehicles and into public transportation. that's something fairfax is talking about. in the short term, maybe new bus service and the potential for new rail service. they talked about highlighting some areas. we were just discussing in the break. it's like everywhere on the map

it's continuous talk. where's the money coming from, how do you create all these bus routes. i know route 1 and 7 are always congested. also i think the here is in terms of fairfax county, they understand that there's a travg problem and they say we can't expand the roads any anymore. >> there's only so much you can go. >> there's only so much space. so i think they're constantly trying to figure out what they can do here. to me the answer will be try to create more bus routes. think that's the smart thing. they're trying to look at this. the toll roads will always be an issue because not all folks are going to wand to pay to get on there. it's a hot topic. so they're still in the discussion stage, but i think it's a matter of -- the issue is going to come down to maas transit and buss. >> i'm sorry. i should say in the medial area, i don't see anything really

happens. i think it's time to build the infrarails. again, where's the money going to come from? are they going to raise taxes? what are they going to do? it's a laudable thing when you look at the practical problems. it's very, very difficult. >> do you think it's a new rail service? out of the ballpark wishful thinking. >> when you start talking about this, this is a 10 20rks-year planning. when you start looking at millennials, for example, i think they will be moving more toward mass transit and away from automobiles. we tend to be an automobile generation. we grew up on that. but our children and grandchildren, i think, are seeing the benefit of mass transit and the whole carbon footprint type of thing. we may not see it in our lifetime but i think mass transit has got to be the way to go because the development --

changes on the way ahead. that's in a few minutes. >> all right. thanks, tom. 6:32, developing in iran. angry protesters stormed the saudi there. they reportedly set fires and threw papers from the rew roof of the embassy oop. at least 40 people were arrested. the shiite cleric with was one of 47 prisoners convict of terrorist charges and executed by saudi arabia earlier this weekend. we now know the name of the young woman found dead on the hiking trails in maryland. katherine alvarado's body was founded on new year's day. she was just 20 years old. her mother saw her on new year's eve and reported her missing when she did not see her the next morning. her friends reacted to the news. >> tell your parents, you know.

life is so short. tell your kids how much you love then because you never know what can bring tomorrow. >> police are offering a $25,000 award that leads toen a aarrest and indictment in the case. an update to the alleged new year's eve crash that included seven people in the district. lloyd is held without bond. he's charged with assault with a deadly weapon. he was arrested after he blowed into pedestrians standing outside a club on l and 17th street. after the crash they charged him with driving under the influence and leaving the scene. new this morning the search will continue for a missing boater in anne arundel county. steven reynolds has been missing since thursday night when he went overboard in the chess piece park and another body was found. a couple hiking found the body.

this is a sad twist to an autistic boy. they found a 5-year-old boy in a canal about a quarter mile from home. he wandered away from the party at the home while he was playing with a tablet. police also found that device near the canal. well, 66 dogs were taken from a home in rockville last night. montgomery county animal control fishls went out to investigate a dog biting case. that's when they suspected a large number of dogs were inside this home. when the person didn't want to let them home, they went and got an order and came back. the dogs have been seized. nija williams and her dog have been found safe. the 16-year-old was last seen in the company of an older man. this was in hanover, maryland. a lot of you shared this story

after we posted it on our facebook pachlk she and her pomeranian are still doing fine but police are asking anyone with this case to please reach out to them. it's an ongoing investigation. 6:35. going on right now the floods that inundated parts of the south is still under way. >> reporter: in arnold, missouri, it's a day for drying out. >> at least 3 feet deep. well, two feek. >> reporter: the town inundated by the meramec river. 24 people are dead and two remaining missing. >> i keep calling it the 100 year flood, the 500 year flood, whatever. i call it the ten-year flood because it keeps coming around.

picture. no comment by brown's camp. he got off on probation after he attacked rihanna and he pled guilty to fighting with a man in 2014. a d.c. man arrested for strong a cachet of guns. they found a stun gun, meat cleaver and other weapons inside his car. this all happened about two hours before the winter classic hockey game. police say there was no threat to those attending that guy. today is virginia governor terry mcauliffe's first day in cuba. he wants to expand and diversify cuba and he hopes travel can accomplish that. he says it offers an economic rm one for this year.

this is a bizarre rescue that has wildlife officials stumped. the mystery of how a lion ended up stranded in the arabian sea. how new body camera

hours to retrieve a man who fell down a cave. he was in hiss. he was exploring the cave. they were a half mile under ground when he slipped on some rocks and fell into a pit. rescue workers were able to squeeze through and get to him. the man was seriously hurt. the mayor has outlined sweeping legislation to outfit officers with body cameras and the use of taser is back on the horizon. mayor muriel bowser signed d.c. legislation to have 2,800 officers wear body cams on duty in 2016. one of the most ambition plans in the nation. >> we know body cams make our community safer and stronger. they increase accountability among all parties involved. >> i support stability and

scarf, gloves, and a warm hat throughout the day on monday and again on tuesday as much colder air moves in. highs, monday afternoon only making it into the upper 30s. and the winds will diminish a bit on monday night and go calm by tuesday and by then we'll be down to near 20 degrees after a few clouds race through on monday afternoon. they'll clear out and then monday night into tuesday morning, clear, sunny, on tuesday afternoon. highs in the mid-30s. then wednesday, another cold morning. the low 20s. wednesday afternoon should make it into the low 40s. just a few high clouds coming in. then some milder air begins to move in toward the end of the week. the district dealing with a cent hike in crime d.c. police say they have a 62% closure rate for homicide but that includes murders that happened in 2015 as well as past years. today is virginia governor terry mcauliffe's first day in cuba. the governor is hoping to capitalize on renewed relations with cuba. mcauliffe wants to expand and diversify the economy. he says cuba offers a tremendous opportunity for virginia.

this someone of five economic travels for the governor this year. investigators say nija williams has been found safe. she and her dog have been missing since december 21st. the 16-year-old was last seen in the company of an older man in hanover, maryland. a lot of you shared this story after we posted it on our facebook page. anne arundel county tell us she and her pomeranian are doing well, but investigators still asking if anyone with information about this case still reach out to them. this is still considered an ongoing investigation. it's 7:43. for the first time, loudoun county has african-americans on its board of supervisors. two were elected. now both were sworn in at the launches down resort in ashburn, yesterday. the event was also historical because it's the first time democrats and republicans were
