that breaking news tonight on metro's yellow line, just before 8:00 on a train heading from georgia avenue to u street, metro tells us someone tried to rob a passenger who was sleeping. the victim was cut on the ear

and ran off that train bleeding to go find help. he was taken to the hospital for a medical condition. we're still working to learn if police have the suspect in custody. the big story for all of us again tonight, the cold. temperatures already dropping to the teens in parts of our area right now. >> we saw plenty of people bundled up around northwest d.c. we don't have the wind gusts tonight but still plenty bitter out there. >> that's a big difference. you don't have the wind biting through you. as long as you bundle up we can take these kinds of temperatures. it is a very cold night across our area, the cold is here along the east. take a look. already at 15 in dulles, 16 in manassas, 19 at clinton and d.c. 27 degrees. as we move on tonight, heading to the bus stop, very cold start. 18 degrees from 7:00 to 8:00

a.m. this morning the wind chill was close to zero. we won't have that same factor but a very cold start as you make your way out. between 3:00 and 4:00, in the 30s and a slight increase tomorrow. you will need to bundle up for sure. one more cold one tomorrow and milder late this week. with the mild air, rain chances on the higher side. could affect the redskins game. the forecast coming up. we learned nats slugger ryan zimmerman is suing al jazeera america and we just got our hands on the lawsuit. it was filed today in d.c. district court. he and ryan howard are suing the network on human growth hormone that linked them to hgh. his attorney said he's never taken performance enhancing drugs and the allegations

damaged his reputation. he's asking for a jury trial and wants to force al jazeera tos for a retraction. but zimmerman and howard are public figures so the burden of proof is on them. the players have to prove the statements are false and al jazeera acted with malice or reckless disregard for the truth. new at 11:00, a woman hit by a ride-on bus while trying to cross a busy bethesda intersection this morning has died. the bus was making a left turn on to old georgetown road. adam learnedinvestigators are looking at the timing of traffic signals to see if something is off and neighbors say it is dangerous during rush hour. >> you've seen this images and heard statements from president obama why he's acting on his own to tighten america's gun laws.

right direction to reduce gun violence and in fact keep our community saver. >> reporter: news4 spoke with a number of local gun shops today. all of them reported an increase in sales recently which is common when a change in gun ownership laws is expected. one providing of the gun laws calls for a license for people who sell on the internet and gun sh shows. one was held last week at the dulles expo in chantilly. >> what happens is everybody gets nervous and starts buying up. >> packed. thousands and thousands of transacti transactions. >> reporter: it would require gun show sellers to conduct background checks on buyers. in a statement this evening, the d.c. police department praised the president's plan for focus on gun crimes and budget requ t requests for the agents of bureau tobacco and firearms. jackie bensen, news4. >> thank you. social media still flooded with

reaction from both sides to the president's actions today. at one point the #stop gun violence was the top trend in this u.s. many supporters used that to thank the president. former lawmakers and mass shooter victim, gabby giffords said, thank you, potus, for standing up to the gun lobby when congress won't. comedian amy schumer said, let's go, we can stop gun violence. meanwhile, yoorbing the #2a, standing for second amendment. and gun control is government control while jeb bush said americans can't give hilary clinton a chance to expand the president's actions. staying with the race for the white house now, tonight, there are signs of tension between gop front runners donald trump and ted cruz. trump recently reignited concerns about cruz's canadian

birthplace and called the issue very precarious for cruz and y says republicans have to decide whether they want a candidate who could be tied up in court. cruz was born in canada to an american mother. he downplayed trump's comments on twitter tonight and refused to address them in interviews. trump's comments come as cruz continues to gain in the polls and some show him leading in iowa. senator creed filed a 6$600 million wrongful death suit today. deeds claims his son was denied psychiatric treatment the day before he attack eed him. he stabbed his father 13 times before shooting himself. senator deeds said in a statement i am committed my son's needless death shall not be in vain and no other virginia family suffer this tragedy. the second of six baltimore police officers charged with the death of freddie gray will be in

court tomorrow with the start of his trial less than a week away. cesar good son was driving the van freddie was transported in. tomorrow, a judge will hear motions by both sides including arguments about what evidence will be admissible. if william porter the first officer to be tried can be called as a witness. williams s says he will invoke fifth amendment and decline to testify. we will be there every step of the way. the first live reports begin tomorrow. the neighborhood where freddie gray was arrested could soon be transformed. the governor and mayor blake announced a plan to demolish thousands of buildings over the next four years. $75 million in state money will go towards dem mission of construction and affordable housing and parks. there an estimated 17,000 vacant

homes, many saw the rioti iningt summer. two people suspected of starting a fire inside a metro train. it happened last night just before 8:00 at the addison road station near capitol heights. it was headed to the district, passengers were evacuated. they ask any who recognizes these two people to give them a call. d.c.'s grover park neighborhood could be one more restaurant able to serve liquor. the association said they would support lifting a cap for liquor licenses for restaurants only. some neighbors were worried about the recently reopened j.p.'s nightclub. they wanted to keep that establishment from selling liq car. they are said to vote on changing the cap later this month. tonight, it's back to reality for those who use marijuana in this district.

only homegrown, only home use. for just 20 minute today things were a bit more relaxed. the d.c. council voted to dissolve a ban on marijuana use in private businesses. minutes later, they changed their minds. why? d.c. mayor muriel bowser made a few phone calls and some say the mayor has too much influence on the council and she argues they are not yet able to influence marijuana use in private clubs. >> it could be the wild west if it doesn't get taken care of. >> members realized it was more of a problem than they realized on the initial vote. >> tonight, smoking marijuana in public in restaurants or cars and coffee shops in the district remains illegal. a convicted robber who followed patrons at a casino and took their winnings at gunpoint has been sentenced to eight years in prison. jose la guerre pled guilty along

they looked for an el nino to solve the drought issues and in the short term flooding issues. san diego has tropical rains and will continue and flood warnings up and down the tropical coast. for the mountains, it means one of the best ski seasons in quite some time towards the sierra. they need to see the rain and are seeing it and snow as well. >> for our area, we didn't see that. just saw cold. between zero and 10 degrees. wind chill not a factor right now. winds out of the southwest at 3 miles an hour. the wind chill not even going to be a message here. 16 degrees in gaithersburg, 14 at culpeper, 18 in fredericksburg and 18 in huntington. we will drop a little tonight. not a whole lot more. temperatures a little bit warmer than tomorrow. it won't feel warmer. we're still in the teens early tomorrow morning. showing clear skies across our

region. no rain and no snow. that's the way it was almost the entire east coast from richmond and d.c. and philadelphia and boston. look what happened toward the hampton roads area, norfolk down towards the cape. look at these streamers of snow. this was chesapeake bay lake effect snow bands coming right off the chose peek bay, ocean affects bands, too. the first one was out of the hampton roads area and did produce a dusting of snow in their area earlier this morning. towards the cape and outer banks, they, too, this is what they woke up to. it was cold enough it stuck on the roads and did cause some travel problems. don't see a lot of snow down there and don't see it very often like this. you have to have just that right amount of northerly component to the wind and saw it today. really fascinating. well, i think so. 14 in gaithersburg tomorrow

morning, 20 in d.c., 16 in fredericksburg, 13 towards winchester. you see the cold that will be out there. bundle up and make sure the kids are wearing just about everything they have. 36 in frederick. 40 in washington with lighter wind and with sunshine tomorrow, the afternoon won't be too bad as long as you follow what she's got on. heavy coat, hat, gloves, scarf. the only thing you don't need are umbrellas. put those away. for a little while. we will need them later on this weekend. the forecast will have a fairly low impact but cold. 42 on thursday and 45 on friday. friday night to saturday, if you're going out you may need the umbrella. late rain friday night to saturday and the next chance of rain comes sunday. fortunately, that rain should be over by the time we play the game, i think around noon. if you're going to tailgate, should be okay there.
