"news4's" molette green is live with the proposals. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. the school officials say the class sizes have increased three times since 2008 and an continued increase in enrollment combined with budget shortfall means it will likely increase again. the school superintendent dr. karen garza says it's so bleak major cuts will be necessary unless major funds come into the school system. it will impact classrooms, programsbling and class fees paid by students. let's take a look at the potential cuts. we're talking increased class

sizes across the board, eliminating special portds teams, an increase in parking fees of about $100 as well as reducing substitute teacher pay. now they have come one two plans. the second plan outlines cuts needed if there is a $75 million bunt shortfall. school officials say that both plans are painful. on the positive side, the task force is trying to preserve step and cost-of-living increases and also preserve the seven-period day for high school students, but a lot of other painful cuts would billion necessary. we'll have mar coming up. back to you. >> thank you. they'll hold a budget rally.

we're follow breaking news out of montgomery county. a large fire in derwood. montgomery county tweeted a picture on willow knoll driving. "news4's" molette green is just arriving on the scene. she's going to join us in a little bit to tell us more about what's happening there, if the fire's under control and which roads are blocked in that area. eight minutes after the hour right now. it was a lucky escape for a canadian family who jumped from their burning fourth floor apartment. you see some of the video here of what happened in quebec city. you see a young boy being dropped to safety.

all three people landed in the snow. they were taken to the hospital to be checked out but they were not hurt. four people are recovering this morning after one crash led to another on the inner loop of the beltway. this happened during an evening rush. firefighters blocked the lane when another car slammed into a fire truck. the driver of the car remains in serious condition. 6:09. starts monday an underground walkway for walking from the parking lot to tell terminal will be closed. con strukd could take as long as 24 months. the "washington post" reports there will be shuttles to take you from the car to the terminal. they'll run every fein five minutes during peak times. >> reporter: outside on the

county fire and ems spokesperson pete ter injer to talk about it. fireplace ashes, you think? >> yes, they were alerted by a fire alarm and noticed smoke. they found the fire on their porch. several pets did not survive but we believe that the fire was caused by some misplaced fireplace ashes. they had a fire yesterday, put the ashes in a bag on the back porch and this morning it broke out into flames. >> you tweeted out flames in the back of the house, contain to the back of the house. now, see category ya elementary school, massive output here, turnout by firefighters. how mump longer do you expect and what's the impact on traffic in the area? >> well t fire is out. we do have some hoses and fire equipment out on bowe mill road

decisions ahead for the fairfax county school system. we're talking potential cuts to programs, increases, and possibly class sizes as well as increases in fees that students pay. now, there is a group that is trying to avoid all of that. they are calling for full funding. i'm joined by melanie marin. she's joined by imfcp. talk about it. how devastating they would be and realistically, can they be avoided? >> they're trying to help them change the conversation in fairfax county by how we fund our public schools. we talk about what to cut. the truth is county and state revenues haven't kept pace with the learning needs of our children, so we're talking about reinvesting in our children's education. we want to see class sizes and physical learning that supports it as well as children's work.
