months. he unloaded 11 shots at officer jesse hartnett last night with a gun stolen from a officer's home more than two years ago. officer hartnett got out of the car and started chasing him. >> i'm absolutely amazed that officer hartnett is here with us today. this male fired aft least 11 shots from a .9 millimeter at close range and he started firing with one aim and one aim only and that was to kill him. >> on top of talking of officer hartnett's courage, the police commissioner described his compassion. he said in one case hartnett bought food for the son of a man he had just arrested. new information tonight in the trial of the officer accused in the death of freddie gray. william porter will not have to testify in the trial of caesar good so goodson. a judge said he would have to testi

testify. tonight a court of appeals ruled he would not have to testify. his trial ended last month in a mistrial. jury selection in good soson sts on monday. goodson is the!hñ driver of then carrying gray. a 19-year-old priss geornce george's county woman was killed. she was not far from her apartment when she was struck on buoy road. meagan fitzgerald talked to a driver who was there moments later and is live at the scene with what we are learning about this tragedy. meagan? >> reporter: helene ngassa was leaving her apartment complex just behind us at 6:00 this morning. she was crossing over 197 right near this intersection here at morris drive is where police say she was struck. we spoke to a woman who was driving past while police are still investigating. >> reporter: drivers and pedestrians who use route 197 to get around will tell you it's always busy.

>> just never to the point where you feel comfortable crossing the street. >> just after 6:00 friday morning laurel police say 19-year-old helene ngassa was crossing 197 near morris drive when she was struck by a driver. audrey barnes is the spokesperson for the city. she says ngassa was not in the cross walk. >> she was struck by a vehicle that was traveling northbound on 197. witnesses say the driver had a steady green light. >> reporter: officials took this video of officers blocking part of the northbound lane while they wrapped up their investigation. janet payne says she was driving by moments after it happened. >> i thought it was a car accident. i saw the lights and the police and they had the street blocked off. >> reporter: ngassa was rushed to the hospital, but she didn't make it. >> very depressing and very sad. >> reporter: how police say the 66-year-old driver has not been charged. we had an opportunity to speak with the city and the highway

just watch a youtube video and a local couple learned that. chris gordon with an important lesson for everyone. >> wendy, this is an automatic garage door for those who have it and for those of you who use an electric door opener and you assume they're locked, but watch. a couple here in adams morgan learned an expensive lesson when wine and bicycles were stolen repeatedly by thieves who unlocked the door and opened it manually. >> had one bike that was in this area here. >> suzanne and brian say their garage was burglarized three times in july, august and as recently as the end of december. the thieves stole expensive bikes. >> we figure around $25,000 worth of bicycles. they're very high end road bikes, mountain bikes. >> two martha stewart bikes and one was an electronic bike. >> they have an alarm in the

and now your storm team 4 forecast. >> dreary and cool and misty and rainy. well, it doesmake for some great activity, but at least it's still fine to go out tonight. take a look outside right now. temperature 43 degrees and winds are calm and that's allowed the fog to develop and that's why you have mist across our region, too and not much in the way of wind at all and temperature in gaithersburg and 34 in la rhea and it is on the chilly side escially back to the west of the blue ridge and fog is also an issue and we have some areas down below a mile around

martinsburg and head's up there. here's where the showers are and you can see the showers around la rhea and win chester and now the radar is starting to pick up on some of this lighter drizzle going out toward the leesburg area and the herndon region and that means the clouds continue to lower here and we'll see that right on through the rest of the evening hours and expect to see some rain tonight and here's more rainmaking its way across the area and we have another batch here and another batch to the west and some of this will continue to form over the region and take the umbrella if you continue to make your way throughout the season. that rain moves out, not a lot tonight and we're not expecting a lot of rain and maybe a little umbrella. starting out mostly dry with fog early tomorrow morning and then tomorrow evening, no problems around 7:00 and take the umbrella, if you're out late, notice what happens by just after midnight here and the rain moves in and some of this rain will be very heavy overnight into sunday morning and here's 4:30 in the morning and most of us are sleeping, but you may be

woken by some of these heavier rain showers as we move through the region and heavy rain expected in some looks and by 10:00 it's almost all out of here and you can see the chance of showers making its way on through here and by the time the redskins game is going on, 4:40 start time i think we're rain free across the region and an isolated shower happens to be right over landover and we'll see if that actually comes through, but i don't think so. i think most of the evening will be dry and one thing for sure, changing temperatures and highs tomorrow into the upper 40s to the west and low 50s in toward the beltway and on the mild side tomorrow. if you're going to the game and again, a 4:40 kickoff and 57 by 4:00 and starting to turn cooler, rather breezy if not windy and if you have plates out there and you're doing tailgating they may be blowing away and the napkins, too and 8:00 by the time the game is over and 45 in the windchill in the mid toiss upper 30s and you won't need the jackets here and you'll need it by the end of the game and make sure you bring

now to a developing story out of philadelphia tonight where police are investigating the ambush of an officer inside his police car. take a look. a man walks up, fires 11 shots into the car. the officer survived. officer jesse hartnett is in a philadelphia hospital right now and being shot -- after being shot three times in his arm. >> tonight a lot of people are talking about his bafry. he was able to chase after that shooter despite his injuries. lauren make talked to two of the people who know that officer.

>> reporter: at bob hartnett auto repair today it's about jesse. >> reporter: what has this past 24 hours been like for you? >> like a nightmare. it's tough, but it's family and we'll take care of each other and we'll all be back down in a little bit. >> bob hartnett is closing up his shop for the weekend and anxious to get back to the hospital to see his son, officer jesse hartnett. shot in his patrol car while doing the job he'd always wanted. >> this is a travesty. it's terrible and for someone to just run up and shoot him, i don't understand that. >> reporter: surveillance video shows the 33-year-old officer get out of his patrol car after the shooting, wounded, he was able to return fire. >> i'm truly amazed, but i expect it from him. >> his uncle tells me about his handgun training. >> he's capable of doing what he had to do. unif notally, their fire hit first. >> reporter: family knows it's dedication, too. >> why did you think he wanted to be a police officer? >> he always wanted to help

people. plain and simple. always wanted to do good. >> reporter: it's why his dad said he joined the coast guard and following that, was there a stint with police, joining philadelphia police five years ago. now he's in the hospital where a proud dad got to see him after surgery. >> reporter: what did you say to him? >> i love him. i'm proud of you. you're going to be fine. yes. he will be. >> new rules are in place at virginia's liquor agency after the controversial arrest of a uva student. the virginia department of alcohol and beverage control made that announcement today as it adopted recommendations and they were made by a task force appointed by governor terry mcauliffe. cell phone video from last year's arrest shows marquise johnson being taken down by agents. these new rules include some additional training and better collaboration between the abc, alcoholic beverage control and the colleges. johnson is suing that agency. .

natalie cole's family says the singer died of heart failure. she was diagnose with a rare lung disease in 2009 after receiving a kidney transplant. that disease eventually caused her heart to fail. cole died last week at the age of 65. she battled drug problems and hepatitis that led to the kidney transplant. for years, cleo's motel and restaurant was a staple in upper marlboro, but now we've learned its original owner and founder cleopatra curtis died over the holidays. curtis was one of the first african-american business owners in upper marlboro. she told the washington post she wanted a restaurant and hotel that african-americans could use in segregated prince george's county. that restaurant is now known as miss kays.

cleopatra curtis is 47 years old. we have an update on those confusing speed signs and the ones that popped up saying 15 miles an hour and they're now gone. just yesterday they were on wisconsin avenue and chevy chase between willard and bradley boulevard. police told chris gordon the signs were not theirs. they could be from the construction company doing the work on the road. cameras there do enforce 35 miles an hour. prosecutors call him a predator, but tonight a fairfax county man convicted of multiple sex offenses is still a free man. he pleaded no contest to several sex offenses today, but when he received jail time he decided to appeal. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey joins us from the reston shopping center where some of this took place. julie? his name, michael wayne edwards. >> he used to be a fitness trainer an prosecutors say he spent time at the safeway following women through the

store taking upskirt photos and worse, but when me decided to appeal, the judge allowed him to remain free on bond and he's used to this drill. he's been tied to other sex offenses in maryland. >> reporter: why were you using your phone to videotape women in the grocery store? >> we have no comment. >> reporter: michael wayne edwards stayed silent and he initially pleaded no contest to three sex offenses, but when the judge sentenced him to 18 months in jail he reversed course and decided to appeal. ed wars' attorney says the allegations against him have cost him his job and 14s and made him the subject of persecution. >> he has suffered social consequences in his personal life and they are personal in nature and we will not be commenting on his case at all. >> but this is not the first time michael wayne edwards has been accused of bizarre attacks on women. five years ago in gaithersburg he was arrested for spraying his bodily fluids on women in a

shopping center parking lot. he was allowed to plead guilty to one charge, his jail time suspended. in august edwards became a suspect again and this time in fairfax count pep police say he trailed female shoppers through the safeway aisles using his cell phone to take upskirt pictures and he followed one victim into the parking lot and exposed himself. the search reveals edwards is also a suspect in a september incident similar to those years ago in maryland that took place near the stone road park and ride. shoppers at the reston safeway were surprised to hear of the upskirting incident and surprised, too, that edwards was allowed to stay out of jail. >> doesn't sound like a good decision. >> maybe there are extenuating circumstances, but the concern is that maybe he's back in business. >> reporter: the case against edwards will move to circuit court where he'll be set for trial. i'm julie carey, news 4.

to know a lot more about this suspect and who he talked to before the attack. in philadelphia, a brazen ambush of a police officer sitting in his cruiser and from the suspect, a confession every bit as shocking. >> he stated that he pledges his allegiance to islamic state. he follows allah and that was the reason why he was called upon to do this, when the gunman opened fire on jesse hartnett shooting point-blank, unloading the last of several shots as he retreated. hartnett returned fire even though he was hit three times. >> the bravery he demonstrated was absolutely remarkable. his will to live, undoubtedly saved his life and we are ever so thankful to god that he's here today because this could have easily been a police funeral. >> reporter: authorities say hartnett lost a lot of blood and underwent hours of surgery.
