we're following two breaking news stories at this hour including a major development in the trial of a police van driver charged in the death of freddie gray. i'm barbara harrison with why that trial is on told. breaking news from the live desk. a deadly accident in clarksburg, maryland. a landscaper trapped under equipment. it is cold enough for snow. we might get a little tomorrow. i'm storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein. i have the hour by hour timing. and i'm eun yang with the life of david bowie, how the entertainment legend is being remembered this morning by people around the world. news 4 midday starts rite now.

now to that breaking news out of clarksburg where a construction worker has died after being pinned under some equipment. we want to take you to the scene. this video just in from chopper 4 over the scene on frederick road. this is at metro ground covers landscaping. right now we are working to get more information on the person who died. also hearing that it could have been a technical issue, the reason behind that accident. we know police are on the scene investigating how this tragedy could have happened. stay with news 4. barbara? breaking news, an indefinite delay in caesar goodson's trial, one of the baltimore police officers charged in freddie gray's death. chris gordon explains what's going on. chris? >> reporter: barbara, the court of special appeals brought this trial to a halt before it began. jury selection was scheduled to start this morning, but judge barry williams took the bench

for less than a minute announcing this trial is in recess and he didn't say when it might resume. this is the trial of baltimore police officer caesar goodson, who drove the fan in which freddie gray suffered his fatal injury in april. officer goodson faces the most serious charges of the six police officers scheduled to stand trial. the maryland court of special appeals last week said it would review the order compelling officer porter to testify againsted goodson with use immunity. goodson's trial ended last month with a hung trial. legal analysts warren alpersteen explains it this way. >> what we saw this morning was the court of special appeals staying the proceedings in their entirety. everything is put on hold. this is different than what we saw at end of last week where

the order comppelling officer porter to testify. this means officer goodson's trial has been delayed indefinitely. and it could have an impact on all the other trials of baltimore police officers as well. now, how long will this trial be delayed? it could be days, weeks or months. tonight on news 4 this evening, we will hear from demonstrators seeking justice for freddie gray and what they think about this indefinite delay. that's the latest live in baltimore. back to you. right now jesse matthew jr. is in court for pretrail hearings linked to hanna graham, the uva sophomore that matthew is accused of abducting and killing last year. david culver has been tracking the case from the beginning. he has more at 11:30. i'm molette green live at scene of a murder-suicide investigation here in loudoun

county in the lansdowne town center community. friends and neighbors are stunned to learn a day that started in sunday church services with a young mother singing in the choir ended this way. in tears, grief-stricken friends drive to the couple's townhouse on winmeade drive. a man and woman said to be long-time sweethearts died in an apparent murder-suicide. >> they spent their last day together in church. >> reporter: local pastor michelle thomas says the two were in their 30s and having marital problems but no sign of troubles hours earlier. >> he was very excited. he told me he was preparing for the week. so this is a shock. he watched the game with some of our other friends. and, so, this is absolutely devastating. >> reporter: the loudoun county sheriff's office says a 911 call went out about 9:00 last night, when deputies got here they found both the man and woman

inside dead. neighbors tell me they didn't see anything or hear anything, and are worried about the young couple's little daughter they would see walking to the school bus every day. >> if we're looking for rational explanations, we will not see one here. these were god lovers. this should not have happened. >> reporter: the sheriffs office has not released the names of victims so we're holding off on giving you that and their pictures. they haven't said how they died. friends tell me the man who lived in this house kept a gun and often threatened to use it. we know the couple had two children. one daughter, college-age. the other young daughter in grade school. live in loudoun county, emergency, molette green, news 4. police in prince william county are looking for the driver who hit a pedestrian and took off. it happened around 2:00 this morning at dale boulevard and ashdale avenue in dale city. the victim was flown to the hospital with serious injuries

there is some in the midwest. most of this passing to our north tomorrow. here is the hour by hour timing on that. by 3:00 in the afternoon, may see a bit of that coming into the mountains of western maryland, west virginia. then some of it breaks up and passes just to our north by around 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. then it is quickly gone. leaving in its wake, maybe just a dusting around the area. off to the north and west mainly. that's the zone that may get it. >> thank you, tom. crews are working to get asbestos out of a school construction site. project officials tell wtop workers found the asbestos when they excavated the old kensington junior high school. they are building a new middle school to help overcrowding in the bethesda chevy chase section of the county. the controversial response to a growing problem in flint, michigan. the white house is monitoring what state officials are doing after announcing unsafe levels of lead in the drinking water last week. it took michigan four days to

breaking news out of annandale, virginia. firefighters put out an apartment fire and people are

being treated for injuries. look at the scene here. at least two people were hurt, we're told, when the fire broke out after 10:00 this morning in the 4900 block of americana drive. from that video you can see flames and smoke could be seen on the second floor. this is all not far from the beltway and little river turnpike. still no word on what caused this fire or how many people were displaced because of it. barbara? >> thanks, angie. a traffic alert. a new hov ramp opens today in alexandria. the ramp connects 395 to seminary road and will be open in time for the commute home today. derrick ward has a preview of the new congestion easing ramp. >> reporter: it's just a ramp, you say. this is not just any ramp. it will help northern virginia carpoolers rise above it all. that's the traffic along seminary road. prior to the opening of this ramp i-395 hov 3 commuters wanting to hook up to seminary

roam to get to the mark city and this part of alexandria had to get off at the franconia-springfield exit and sit in five miles of seminary road traffic. well no more. this ramp will allow them to make that transition a lot easier. it's going to be hov 3 at all times. open to buses. the cost is $76 million, but the value and time saved, priceless. in alexandria, derrick ward, news 4. >> there's a new proposal to extend the 95 express lanes in stafford to fix backups at the merge point. dell watt mark cole wants to add an extension of the lanes on to u.s. 17. for this to work, vdot would have to negotiate with transurban. the work would be done somewhere around 2020. a lot of you have complained about the backups at the merge since the express lanes opened back in december of 2014. the supreme court could make a big ruling soon involving unions. the justices are hearing

arguments today on whether state government workers who choose not to join a union can still be required to pay dues to cover negotiating contracts. the case stems from the california teacher association. it would affect 23 states where unions bargain for both members and nonmembers. the iowa caucuses are three weeks away. right now some of the top candidates are running neck and neck. according to latest nbc news "wall street journal" poll, donald trump is not number one in iowa he is trailing ted cruz by 4%. marco rubio is third with 13%. hillary clinton and bernie sanders are locked in a tight race in the hawkeye state. clinton leads sanders by 3%. martin o'malley has 5%. the latest poll shows sanders outperforms clinton in hypothetical general election match-ups in both iowa and new hampshire. hillary clinton took some

right now a woman accused of carrying out a string of jewelry store heists is in federal custody. abigail kemp was wanted for several heists. police caught up with her in atlanta. she made her first court appearance several hours ago. the fbi believes she's responsible for six robberies in five states since last april. a germantown man said he was fired for the catholic church for bag married gay man. jeffrey higgins lost his job last december after the parish found out he was in a same-sex

right now jury selection in the first of six civil trials against general motors is underway in new york. at issue are claims over faulty ignition switches. the first case involves an oklahoma crash that injured the driver.

. right now a high profile trial pushed back indefinitely. we don't even know when jury selection will begin in caesar

goodson's trial. he is facing a murder charge for freddie gray's death. an appeals court issued a stay this morning while figuring out whether another officer must testify. david culver from charlottesville. a pretrial hearing underway in the case of jesse matthew. 14 witnesses have been subpoenaed to testify today in the pretrial hearing. most of them law enforcement. we expect new details to come out of their testimony that could reveal exactly how this abduction unfolded when it comes to hannah graham and her murder. jesse matthew is accused in the case. his trial is set for july. several pretrail hearings are scheduled up to that point. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against matthew. he's also charged in morgan harrington's case. that is set for october. another thing that we'll be watching here in court today is the change in prosecution.

memorials are growing now for david bowie. we learned overnight that the singer died of cancer. he was fighting that cancer for more than a year. we see the legacy that boweie leaves behind. >> reporter: david bowie was a rock music icon for more than 40 years. his manager confirmed the singer's passing on sunday. bowie's death two days after his 69th birthday which was celebrated by the release of his 47th album, black star. an event jimmy fallon noted on "the tonight show." >> david bowie, the coolest kid in school. >> reporter: bowie burst on to the music scene with the ballad "space oddity." it set off not just a string of hit songs in the '70s, but also an array of bowie personas
