tonight to show just how dangerous it is. and when this local army vet got the call, he thought it was a prank. >> it's an immense honor to even be considered for something like this. >> now he has a front row seat for president obama's last state of the union. >> "news4 at 11" starts now. >> hello, everybody. we begin tonight with another blast of cold weather coming our way for tomorrow, and this one could bring some snow with it. >> but don't go get your skis out just yet. this is going to bring something we call conventional snow. let's get the latest from doug. what does that mean? how much are we talking about? >> that means you'll be talking to your friends. did you see the snow that came by a little earlier? it's gone now. but you saw it. that's what we're going to see tomorrow. temperatures on the the cold side already. 31 in d.c. 23 in gaithersburg. 22 in martinsburg. some of the temperatures have come up a few degrees. martinsburg was down to 19. so ahead of this system, yes going to see our numbers warm just a bit. here is the system to the west. look at all the snow back here

from cincinnati to chicago over towards cleveland. it is going to be making its way our way. the bulk of the energy moves up the north and east. we are tracking another system that is going to help to give us some snow during day tomorrow. may not be all snow. may start off with rain and change to snow. tracking that clipper. rain and snowshowers likely tomorrow afternoon. and behind this, if you think it's cold now, we've got some big-time cold coming for wednesday. my forecast in just a few minutes. >> all right, we'll see you then, doug. thank you. new tonight, dozens turn out tonight to remember a local teenager killed while riding his bike here two weeks ago. they say the crosswalk here where he died isn't safe, and someone else is going to get hurt if nothing changes. 19-year-old frank towers died. darcy spencer joins us live with the story. darcy? >> reporter: jim, this is the area where this happened. you can see there is a button you can press to slow down traffic. but many here tonight are saying that is not good enough.

a red light is needed here to prevent another tragedy. >> it's just a tragedy. it's a tragedy that didn't need to happen. >> reporter: an emotional walk along beers mill road in rockville to highlight a dangerous crossing where a popular teenager riding a bike died after being hit by a suv. >> it can't happen again, it just can't. >> reporter: frank towers is the young man he lost his life here on a bike he had just gotten for christmas on his way from work at dynamite gymnastics. >> i remember him teaching the little kids. he was always happy you. could always see him smile. >> reporter: holding candles, the group walked across the intersection which has a crosswalk, but that didn't prevent powers from being hit. >> we love him, miss him. to show him if he didn't know how many people loved him. >> reporter: when you want to walk across the street, press this button that makes is the lights flash up the road warning

cars that a pedestrian is coming. even after i pressed the button, there was one driver who just didn't stop. many say drivers should be forced to stop. >> if there was a red light here, this would not have happened. there shouldn't be an arbitrary decision whether or not to stop. >> reporter: the crash remains under investigation. the driver has not been charged. those walking in towers' memory also have a message to drivers. >> people need to stop for the cyclists and all the family members and the kids that are out here playing and riding bikes. >> reporter: that is definitely excellent advice. we've seen a lot of cars coming through here just going way past the posted speed limit. a site has been set up to help with expenses for this family. you go to our website, nbcwashington.com for information on that. wendy, back to you. >> thank you, darcy. to a developing story that we first told you about at 6:00. another d.c. firefighter is being allowed to retire despite fact some possible discipline. the lieutenant was charged with

neglect of duty after a 1-year-old boy died choking on a grape in march. a review found a lieutenant did not notify dispatchers of the status of his medical units, and that delayed response. the firefighter was supposed to face a trial board in february, but filed for retirement last month, and that allowed him to receive his full pension. the d.c. council did pass a law to close that loophole after the death of metric mills almost two years ago there was also a delayed response in mr. mills' case. the lieutenant in that case was able to retire as well before going before a trial board. new tonight at 11:00, we have learned that metro will hold on to the man who held the agency during the long search for a new gm. jack requa will stay at metro. he'll provide overall support at the transit agency. requa took over when the previous gm resigned about a

year ago. he led metro through what has arguably been the most rocky period in its history. and tomorrow more than 80 lawsuits are to be filed against metro. that will be the first anniversary of that deadly smoke incident at l'enfant plaza. since then there has been a leadership change and the government has taken over safety oversight. just today the federal transit association announced daily unannounced safety inspections. new gm paul wiedefeld welcomes the scrutiny. riders just want things to work. >> i do feel like we can be safer. >> i meet with every class as they come in the door. and the first message i give them is that is what their job is. it's the safety for each other and for our customers. >> wiedefeld also called the safety inspections the new norm. said it's important for changing the culture at metro. we're learning new information tonight about a maryland man charged with joining the terrorist group al shabab. court documents reveal

31-year-old malik jones is from baltimore. he traveled up to jfk airport in new york and took off for somalia in 2011. court documents say he learned how to fight and did battle against kenyan government soldiers. kenyan authorities arrested jones last month. they say he was trying to get a boat to yemen. jones is now back in the u.s. and facing terrorism charges in new york. president obama's final state of the union address. it is less than 24 hours away. and tomorrow a northern virginia army veteran will be one of the president's and the first lady's invited guests. news4's chris lawrence spoke with him tonight. he is live outside in the capital. hey, chris. >> hey, wendy, when he got the call from the white house, it came up as an unknown number. he told me he came this close to not answering the call. >> okay, who is this really? is it somebody i know playing a prank? >> reporter: it was the white house asking him to sit with the

first lady. >> what was your first reaction to this invitation? >> i was shocked. i had to take a moment to breathe and really take it in. his parents emigrated to the u.s. from saudi arabia when he was 2 years old. his heritage is pakistani. but all he knew is northern virginia. >> i learned in middle school that to be president, you have to be born here. oh, i wasn't born here? wait a second. >> reporter: he was in eighth grade on 9/11. >> personally, i felt like that was an affront to me and my faith and my family. >> reporter: five years later, he enlisted. why the army? >> after 9/11, i saw that military service was a way to give back to the community and to the country that i felt had given me so much. >> reporter: naveed deployed to iraq and rose the rank of specialist. now he is back in fairfax county, a real estate agent who is active in several veterans groups. he catches nats games with his fiancee while raising his 7-year-old son. >> at least one candidate has called for a complete ban on

new tonight, after ten hours of testimony, a judge in charlottesville sided with prosecutors today in a pretrial hearing over search warrants in the hannah graham murder case. defense attorneys for jesse matthew challenged the warrants that allowed police to search his apartment and his car. graham's remains were found about five weeks after she disappeared. matthews charged with capital murder, and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. matthews' defense still has an opportunity to get other key pieces of evidence thrown out. they're back in court for another pretrial hearing next week. the trial is set for july. whatever the verdict, it is expected there will be an appeal. in loudoun county tonight, the police there still trying to figure out why a man killed his wife and then turned the gun on himself. police found 40-year-old andre howell and his 39-year-old wife naomi dead inside their leesburg home on sunday. he was in the navy.

she sang in the church choir. the couple were childhood sweethearts, and they had two daughters. one of them was away at college, but the younger girl, about 4 years old, was home when her parents died. it is still not clear what she may have seen or heard. an unusual fight for firefighters tonight in anne arundel county. a fire sparked in a pipe at the brandon shores power plant outside baltimore. it was fueled by coal and shot flames about 90 feet into the air. 50 firefighters had to use co2 extinguishers to put it out because water could have damaged that pipe. it took more than two hours to put out and no one was injured. and new tonight, montgomery county police are just identifying the construction worker who was killed this morning in clarksburg. they say 28-year-old glen bower from fredrick was pinned under some sort of equipment while he was working at the metro ground cover, that's a mulch company, on frederick road.

hazy cosmic vibes into the sky tonight. david bowie fans braved the cold and gathered at malcolm x park in d.c. to listen to ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars while remembering that iconic musician. >> it seems millions around the world are choosing to honor bowie in the same way folks are scooping up their favorite bowie songs and albums on itunes. at last check bowie's 11 of 28 albums were in the top 100 for the day. at one point his new album out just a week ago along with the greatest hits album and ziggy stardust were all in the top ten, and even knocked adele from the top spot. well, news4 your health tonight that could make one of the most confusing and controversial questions in women's health care even more confusing and controversial. when should you start getting regular mammograms? the american cancer society recommends yearly screenings

beginning at age 45. but now the u.s. preventative services task force is recommending that you start at age 50 with a screening only every other year after that. while screenings for women in their 40s can be effective, that age bracket is known to be at higher risk for false positives. as always, your health and individual risk factors are important, and you should talk to your doctor about what is right for you and figure this out. a warm bonfire or fire pit sounds pretty good on a cold night. and more and more products make it easier to light up in your own backyard. but news4's erika gonzalez has a warning tonight about more and more people getting burned. >> reporter: bonfires, fire pits. both are gaining popularity. paul harmon has been lighting bonfires in his backyard for more than 20 years. >> that's where we all congregate. and it also helps with the yard cleanup. >> reporter: but one night this fall he says he made a life

threatening mistake. >> never had an incident until recently. i remember everything that happened. from the blast, my ears ringing, and knowing i was fully engulfed in fire. >> reporter: harman thought he grabbed motor oil to help ignite the fire. >> but instead it was pure gasoline in the can. and instead of stopping at that moment, i gave it one more shot. and that's the moment you wish you had back. and when that can exploded, it literally rocked the neighborhood. >> reporter: harman suffered third-degree burns all over his body and required multiple surgeries at medstar washington hospital's burn center. dr. jeffrey scufpp. >> we see dozens of these every year. >> reporter: the u.s. consumer products safety estimates 39 emergency room visits with just fire pits in 2014. falling into the fire is a common danger for children and

adults. this youtube video shows a man stumble right into a fire pit. in california, this girl suffered injuries while roasting marshmallows over a fire pit. >> things that people do very often. so they get very comfortable with setting a fire for a bonfire. they get very comfortable with the fire pit. >> reporter: harman restored vintage cars for a living, but today continues his recovery with physical therapy. >> i need my hands every day. so my work has come to a screeching halt. when you're burnt bad enough, your life changes. >> reporter: erika gonzalez, news4. >> now depending on where you live, there are laws for recreational burning. you can find those laws in your area on our nbc washington app. just search "fire." >> and you safely want to start a fire tonight because it is quite cold. >> it's chilly. temperures drop really quickly with these clear skies across the area. some locations went down into the teens. but ahead of our storm system, we're actually seeing temperatures on the rise. last hour, d.c. was 30 degrees.

right now up to 31. we came up a whole degree. winds out of the southeast at 5 miles an hour. and that southeasterly wind will help. tomorrow those winds will shift out of the south a little bit. eventually out of the southwest. and that will help temperatures to get back into the low 40s for the most part. 21 in gaithersburg. 22 martinsburg. 23 in culpeper. it is going to be a very cold night tonight. a little bit of wind too. so we have windchills in the teen. on the radar, nothing around our region just yet you. still have to go well back to the west to see the first hints of snow. here it is. this is the clip they're is moving on through the chicago land area. winter storm warnings up along the lake here. and for us, the system will move in. there is actually another system back to the west there is the one i'm watch right here. this is going to come all the way around, the clipper, into our area tomorrow. give us a little bit of enhancement. that could produce shower activity during the day tomorrow. where is the winter weather advisories? you notice nothing around our area at all. we're not going to see much in the way of snow at all.

but back towards garrett county, they could pick up 2 to 4 inches around there. good for skiing over the next couple of days. even our ski resorts locally doing pretty well with the cold air we've had. here is 7:00 a.m. no problem around our region tomorrow morning. the clouds moved in around noon. that's going to set the stage for what happens later. here comes the shower activity. and you notice, rain showers mixed in with snowshowers. but as the day goes by, it should all change over to snow for the most part. gaithersburg, leesburg, even in d.c. rain changing to snow. up to the north as well. could see some of that snow coming through here. right around 5:00, 6:00. so it will coincide with the evening rush. again, not worried about accumulation on the road. but it could come down at a pretty good click. that will at least slow the roadways down a little bit. give yourself extra time. by 9:00, it's all out of here. where may we see problems on the road? well, the primary roads are no problem. 70, 81. no worry there's. but it may be the secondary records towards martinsburg,

hagerstown, maybe around frederick, especially some of the higher elevations. heads-up there for at least a coating across the area. 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., no worries. 4:00 to 7:00, that's when the snowshowers start to move in. that's when we could start to see some of those issues as we move on through the rest of the day. temperatures behind this system much, much colder. wednesday is one cold day. 30 degrees for a high temperature. but the windchill is going to be a major factor here. windchill between 5 and 10 degrees early on wednesday morning. 10 to 15 around noon. 15 to 20 around 4:00 in the afternoon. we do start to moderate a little bit on thursday and friday. but then we see another storm system come in. a little chance of rain on saturday. but look behind it on monday. even colder. i think next week is going to be the coldest week we've seen so far. so don't get used to the warmer temps you see there and don't worry much about the snow. check in for tomorrow morning for the latest. >> thank you. coming up, the redskins' season is over. season is over. but is rg3's time in the
