tonight and a reminder, news 4 is the best place to watch the address starting at 9:00 p.m. we'll be streaming it online and on the nbc washington app to make it easy for you to follow along. good morning. angie goff with breaking news. a family of four all killed when their house exploded in eastern ohio. this happened in the cleveland area. only an hour ago emergency responders said they were still looking for a child. now they say a man, a woman and two young girls all died. the blast happened at around 8:30 last night. the cause is still under investigation now. we'll be watching for more. all right, we avoided is so far, but not anymore. today is the first time we'll start to see some snow. is not the shovable kind, but the 50 plows are going out on the road. so how much are we looking at here?

commute home tonight, even the tiniest bit of moisture can cause a big problem on the roadways. beltway at st. barnabas, no big problems there. 66 looks good. and so does 95. a little red inbound 395, we'll check on that. not sure if that is accurate right now. we're not having any report of any problem in that area. big look at the beltway. you see inner loop and outer loop, everything slowing just fine. little road work hanging around outer loop there as you go through the tysons area. see you back here in a couple of minutes at 4:41. today marks one year since the deadly smoke incident at the lenfant station. this is video from inside the tunnel here. passengers waited 35 minutes for the first responders to arrive. a virginia woman died. 80 people went to the hospital for smoke inhalation. today, 80 passengers will file lawsuits against metro.

the lawyers say their clients have suffered long, ongoing health complications because of that smoke. since the incident, metro has seen a leadership change. the federal government has taken over safety oversight. this week the federal transit administration announced daily unannounced safety inspections. the new general manager welcomes the scrutiny. >> every two weeks get new employees in. i meet with every class they come in the door and the first message i give them, that is what their job is, the safety for each other, and safety of our customers. >> wiedefeld called the safety inspections at metro the new norm. we also learned that metro will hold on to the man who led the agency during a long search for a new general manager. jack requa will stay as the new scuff managing officer. an internal memo says he'll provide overall support at the transit agency. the interim gm, he led the metro through what has been the most rocky period in its history. right now an eye on tarrant

county, texas, where the mother of ethan couch will be released today. tonya couch posted bond according to the county sheriff's office. ethan couch is the teen who claimed he had affluenza after killing four people in a drunk driving crash in 2013. they were both arrested in mexico after ethan couch missed a meeting with his probation officer. the sheriff's office saying that tonya couch posted a $75,000 bond and will be released today. we're going to let you know when. >> thank you. search warrants in the hannah graham murder case could provide more evidence today. defense attorneys for jesse matthew challenged the warrants that allows police to search his home and car. her remains were found five weeks after she disappeared. matthew was charged with capital murder and prosecutors want death penalty. the trial is set for july. bowe bergdahl has to answer to desertion and misbehavior

charges today. he disappeared from his base in afghanistan and was held captive by the taliban for nearly five year. he was released in 2014 as part of a prisoner swap for several detainees from guantanamo bay. he will be in court for a motions hearing. he did not enter a plea. four people are recovering from a crash that also slowed down traffic on rockville pike. this happened near halpine street. traffic cameras caught the backup. montgomery county fire and rescue says two cars crashed there, one of them flipped over. everyone is expected to be okay. coming up on 4:36 now, friends and family of a man killed in an accident that want drivers to slow down. 19-year-old frank powers died two weeks ago in rockville. he was hit riding his bike on veirs mill road near turkey branch parkway. dozens returned to the intersection last night with candles warning that the cross walk is not safe. they say if nothing changes,

someone else will get hurt. >> if there is a red light here, this wouldn't happen. >> the crash remains under investigation now. the driver a er in the death ha been charged. new details in a deadly street accident in clarkzburg. the victim has been identified as glen bower from frederick. he was pinned under equipment at a mulch company in montgomery county. it is still not clear what led to the accident, but the occupational safety and health administration is investigating. it took several hours and nearly 60 firefighters to put out a fire at a power plant outside of baltimore. around 4:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon, fire erupted in a pipe at the brandon shores power plant. look at the scene there. it is fueled by coal and shot 90 feet into the air. firefighters used extinguishers to put out the fire. water could damage the pipe. snow moving into the area

country in president barack obama's final state of the union address tonight. tracie potts is live on capitol hill, so, tracie, who are some of the guests we're expecting tonight. >> a number of people, and some of them will focus on gun control and tightening gun laws, something the president has wanted to do and first lady's box tonight. there will be an empty chair and the white house says that will represent victims of gun violence, voiceless victims that they have been fighting for and trying to get these laws changed. also, a partner of one of the san bernardino shooting victims will be in the first lady's box as well. and there are other guests tonight, maryland steny hoyer is inviting her husband, a capital police officer, who was killed back in 1998 when a gunman approached the security checkpoint. so they really want to try to focus on that tonight. there are other things they'll be focusing on as well. immigration reform. again, another big one that the president tried to go around

call inviting him to tonight's state of the union. >> the lady on the other line, said, hey, julie from the white house, wanted to extend an invitation to you to -- for the state of the union address to sit with the first lady in the box. i was, like, okay, who is this really? somebody i know playing a prank. but, no, it was real. and i couldn't believe it. >> shah was deployed to both iraq and afghanistan. now he is in fairfax county, working in real estate and raising his son with the help of his fiancee. we're learning new information about a maryland man charged with joining the terrorist group al shabab. court documents reveal 31-year-old maalik jones is from baltimore. they say jones traveled from new york to somalia. he was arrested last month, saying he was trying to board a boat to yemen. he's back in the u.s. and facing terrorism charges in new york.

today, the trial continues for former woodbridge day tacar teacher. jordan faces nearly four dozen charges that she mistreated 13 toddlers in her classroom. powerful testimony yesterday from parents and one of jordan's former co-workers. that co-worker said she saw jordan dump water on a little girl's head and trip another child and laugh. parents testified they noticed their children cried when they had to be dropped off and had a fear of water. a d.c. firefighter is being allowed to retire with a full pension despite facing possible discipline. the lieutenant was charged with neglect of duty after a 1-year-old boy died choking on a grape last march. the lieutenant did not notify dispatchers of the status of the medical unit which delayed the response. the firefighter was supposed to face a trial board in february but filed for retirement last

month. you have a chance to weigh in on some big issues facing montgomery county. the county council having several public hearings this afternoon in rockville. the first focuses on changing zoning laws to allow more food trucks. the second hearing involves increasing penalties for selling tobacco to minors. and the third looks at establishing a salary schedule for county employees. it is 4:49. another airline will start offering flights from bwi marshall but we don't know which one. officials say they'll reveal the new airline at 10:00. we're told it will service multiple markets and put all the detail on the nbc washington app after they're announced. >> more competition, cheaper flights. >> let's hope so. we can take some vacation and get away from the cold weather. >> a nonstop to ft. lauderdale somewhere, right? nice, cold weather coming back. i say nice and cold, we need our chill time in the winter. we really do.

bitten by mosquitos on new year's eve. not good. i wasn't in florida either, which is problem number two. outside this morning, what to expect for your day today, scattered showers coming our way. they'll start out as rain drops, they'll end up as snowflakes. little to nothing in the way of accumulation. here is our snow map. conversational snowflakes for the metro. maybe sweepable amounts across northern maryland and out into the panhandle of west virginia. nobody -- doesn't look like anybody in our viewing area will get an inch of snow. right now, current temperatures 25, gaithersburg. 30 in washington. 34 in annapolis. early morning walk or jog, a steady rise in temperatures. winds will turn around to the south this morning. that will put temperatures up to the 40s. this will start as rain for the metro area. all the advisories back out to our west, purple shading here, those are winter weather advisories, they stop once you get into far parts of western maryland, no advisories except for wint advisories here in the metro.

consider. we're keeping an eye on the developing story in virginia, a state lawmaker is pushing a bill that would allow clerks to refuse to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. republican state senator charles carico is from southwestern virginia and says constituents are concerned about what happened to kim davis. she was a kentucky clerk who went to jail for denying licenses to same sex couples. her bill would allow clerks to denow a license if they have a religious or moral objection. governor terry mcauliffe says he will veto that bill if it makes it to his desk. decision 2016 and the growing campaign behind the democratic front-runner chelsea clinton will begin a series of campaign appearances this morning on behalf of her mother. she begins with an early learning round table in concord, new hampshire. she has an event this afternoon in nearby manchester. hillary clinton is campaigning in iowa today. a quick look at what some of the other candidates have planned for the day ahead as
