under way. we'll have them in a matter of minutes. >> while we wait for those results we want to get you the latest for the story that unf d unfolded on news4 at 5:00 and 6:00 tonight. >> many of you watching as prince george's county firefighters pulled people out to safety. we have team coverage as investigators work to figure out what caused the fire. we start with shomari stone and dozens of residents left out in the cold. shomari. >> reporter: good evening. dozens of those families are either with relatives, friends or housing provided by the red cross. the fire started on the fourth floor. surrounding units either have fire or water damage. many of those tenants came out here. it was cold. they had clothes on their backs and blankets and tonight, they're doing everything they can to try and find a place to sleep. look at this chopper 4 video, orange flame, thick black smoke shooting in the air as this fire rages at an apartment building

in prince george's county just south of the capitol beltway. this video shows them rescuing people on the ladder and ground and our cameras captured them reyou nighting this adorable dog with its owner. >> to my amazement, the flames were going pretty strong. >> reporter: he was on the third floor when the fire broke out. the a he and dozen officers advocated. thy turned off the licht and gas to be safe. >> unlike my neighbors that came out with just the shirt on my back, i have hyper thermal wear so i'm good but concerned for them. >> reporter: he allowed a 2 and 4-year-old to warm up in his car. tempts in the 20s and 30s makes things much worse. >> it is but i'm grateful.

i'm here, i'm safe. >> tonight, neighbors help neighbors and others rely on the red cross and relatives -- >> i have so many things there. >> reporter: while tenants decide what to do next, amani waits for warmth. >> when the trucks clear out i can head to a friend and spend the night. >> reporter: i spoke to the prince george's fire information officer tells me four condo units are destroyed and there are 10 people who got help from the red cross with temporary food or housing vouchers. as for the fire, jackie bensen will have that. i'm shomari stone, news4. >> two people were injured in the apartment where this fire started. one seriously and three firefighters also suffered minor injuries, one from smoke

inhalation and the other burns. and jackie has what they have been able to piece together as to the cause. it sounds like it could have been a lot worse. >> reporter: it could have. the exact cause is not determined. it is believed to have beep accidental and started in the kitchen area of that top floor unit. prince george's county firefighters used gavelized metal buckets to sift through the debris in the kitchen area of the apartment where the fire began. the size of the building and how many lived here meant firefighters had to get on the scene actively. >> they had to go into an aggressive stance. and we had to assume after 5:00, a lot of people would be home watching television so we had to go into an interior tact. >> reporter: there is no attic or crawl space where the fire

could have smoldered unnoticed for a while. still, containing the fire required significant resources. >> the second alarm was sounded by command in the first three minutes and brought 20 piece apparatus and firefighters from other counties. >> reporter: we learned the fire hydrant is not working and out for some time. fire officials tell us that was not the closest to this fire and did not affect operations. jackie bensen, news4. >> we're checking powerball results to see if any has mat matched all six numbers. you just got a push alert on the nbc washington app. just in case you haven't seen them, here they are. the five winning numbers are 8, 27, 34, 4, 19. the powerball number is 10.

now, to a story you saw first on the nbc washington app this afternoon. transportation reporter adam tuss learned nine metro employees were arrested for gaming the fare card system. they collected paper fare cards from customers trying to exit the system without enough money on their cards. the metro employees transferred the money on smart trip cards and sold them at a discount and pocketed the profit. >> for example one was sold for 1$100 and sold for 6$60 at a discount. >> it didn't cost the agency much money but wouldn't put a dollar figure on it. the scheme was uncovered by metro and officials say it shouldn't happen again. justice and closure, parents described their relief today after a judge found a former daycare worker guilty of child ah because. >> she knows what she did.

it's trying to bring snow our way but too dry in our atmosphere. what it will do is pass by to the north of us as a warm front. behind it we will see a return flow from the south and means warmer temperatures tomorrow. we may get down to the upper teens and 25 in the city. a cold start to the day. with that return flow out of the south, we get back to the 40s. 43, gaithersburg and fredericksburg, 48. i think we see plenty of sunshine in the afternoon. a pretty nice arch. you will need the coats early but not with the sun. ski forecast. haven't shown this much at all this season. a little slushy and icy by saturday, breezy afternoon. just flurries really. sunday the best day to go skiing. here's where the cold comes back. monday, mlk day, windy and cold conditions because of the arctic blast about to move in. 47 tomorrow, 48 on friday.
