upper 30s, hoveris shenandoah v. big changes on the way over the next couple of days. we'll look at that coming up this half hour. >> we'll check in with you then. thanks. new developments just in in that al qaeda attack on a western hotel. we're learning that four jihadists and 24 people are d . dead. two of the attackers have been identified as women. this thoughs the ambush in burkina faso. teams have regained control of the splendid hotel as well as the cappuccino cafe. he says 126 hostages have been freed. he also says security teams are searching nearby hotels just to be sure there were no other extremists hiding out there. right now, high level talks over the iranian nuclear deal. it's not in place yet but just yesterday, the president allowed an exception to the u.s. trade embargo, allowing iran to buy

certain american planes. today, secretary of state john kerry is on his way to vienna to push the deal forward. before the deal can be implemented, international agents must verify that iran is cooperating. >> all right. as we mentioned, a big day at the national zoo. bei bei set to make his public debut. got to show you this. here's what it looked like two years ago when bei bei's big sister bao bao went on public display. more than 5,000 showed up for her debut. if you're planning to see the panda cubs this weekend, dress warmly and be ready to stand in a long time. the gates open at 8:00 and the panda house opens at 9:00. bei bei is nearly 5 months old and weighs 25 pounds. >> too cute. several events are happening across the country to honor the life of dr. martin luther king jr. many will dedicate part of their holiday weekend with a day of service, both today and monday, volunteers with the rock creek

conservancy will clean and beautify locations in the district as well as montgomery county. you can find information on our nbc washington app. residents in the capitol hill area say they feel as they though can rest easier after the arrest of two men. we're been monitoring a series of robberies as well as sexual assaults in that neighbored. 25-year-old melvin latney and 21-year-old antoine pitt is potential. here's what especially bothers neighbors. latney began his crime spree within hours of his release from a halfway house. surveillance cameras appeared to catch him robbing multiple businesses. >> these alternatives to being inka incarcerated include group homes, halfway homes, gps tracking devices. it's those folks we are seeing that are increasingly being involved in crime. >> the chief went on to say pitt cut off his gps monitoring ankle

bracelet warn asç part of. the mayor is hoping more people will install surveillance cameras. she just signed legislation encouraging property owners to do just that. businesses will get rebates for buying and registering surveillance systems. once they're registered, d.c. police will have the ability to access that video. decision 2016, ted cruz's so-called birther issue is becoming, it seems, a bigger issue. a texas lawyer filed a federal lawsuit challenging the canadian-born senator's ele eligibility to run for president. cruz argues because his mother is american he became a u.s. citizen at birth. the supreme court has not previously considered the eligibility question. rival donald trump has repeatedly questioned the gop candidate's presidential eligibility.

"the new york times" also reporting this morning that senator cruz failed to report a second loan for his 2012 senate run. cruz said he made paperwork errors. imagine a note from your child's middle school saying someone brought a loaded gun to class. it happened when at nicholas orem middle school. police officers and security guards found it and it was confiscated. the student faces disciplinary action. and a new $98 million fbi facility getting the green light, east of winchester, virginia. expected to bring about 1,200 jobs to that area. virginia leaders, though, they're hoping the facility will strengthen their own case to bring the new fbi headquarters to the commonwealth. the agency considering three locations for that move.

t. rowe price. invest with confidence. this is news 4 today. authorities in oregon arrest a man they say was driving a government vehicle stolen from that wildlife refuge being of course pid by an armed group. they've been protesting federal land policies as the standoff in oregon's high desert hit the two weeks mark. authorities also say they recovered a second stolen vehicle from the refuge. authorities have not tried to remove that group as the situation rolls on. the former taco bell executive who punched his uber driver from behind is suing the man for $5 million. you may remember this video that

you're watgr'g news 4 today. after walmart announced it's cancelling plans to build two more stores in the district, d.c.'s attorney general considering all options. city leaders furious over what they call walmart's broken promise. the company planned to open two stores in ward 7 at the skyland development in southeast and the capital gateway in northeast. the stores would have anchored redevelopment projects in those neighborhoods, generating more jobs in retail. vincent gray was part of the original negotiations to bring walmart to the district. >> i believe the mayor and she

new hampshire and parts of maine. but here all the rain is gone except maybe a sprinkle here, right around just east of leesburg, along the potomac river on the montgomery county border there. temperatures hover in the upper 30s. metro airea, low to mid-40s. dramatic drop over the next couple of days. we'll look at this this half hour. >> new this morning, a man is in custody after driving his car straight at howard county police officers. we're working to learn more about the suspect and the charges he faces. officers say they first went to ellicott city around 10:30 last night. someone called in a robbery. when they got there, they found the man in his car and told him to get out. they say he drove right at them. that's when officers started shooting at his car. developing off the coast of hawaii at this hour, the search forç debris after two military helicopters collided and went down during training.

marine officials are asking folks to immediately report any debris they may notice. at this point there's no word on the fate of the 12 crew members on board. marine officials say wreckage is spread over a two-mile area in the water. the helicopters involved were based in hawaii and were out for night time training late thursday evening. new video in the fight against isis. take a look at this, the defense apartment says this american air strike hit an isis cash distribution center in iraq early this week. you can see what looks like bits of paper. defense officials say that's actually cash. this is at least the second u.s. strike on an isis cash center. it's part of a wider strategy to weaken the militant's financial strength. today, a rally against gun stores near schools in fairfax county. advocates say they want to designate a gun-free distance around certain places.

questions remain in the san bernardino mass shooting six weeks later. an fbi official leading the investigation says some of the most basic questions are still unanswered. those questions include whether anyone else was involved in the december massacre and whether more violence was planned. another key question was why the shooters chose the time and place of the attack. the fbi also is trying to fill in an 18-minute gap in the whereabouts of the husband and wife killers following the shooting. a federal judge rejected boston marathon bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev's appeal to pay in the attacks. he has no money or income. he was convicted and sentenced to death last year in the 2013 attack that killed three people and injured over 260 others.

two d.c. teenagers are expelled after school officials say they not only threatened their classmates but tried to get a muslim student to take the fall. the trouble began wednesday at washington latin public charter school in northwest washington. administrators tell us students found an unattended laptop in a classroom. it was signed in to a muslim student's female account. the teenager used the account to the send out a threat to hundreds of students saying, quote, friday, there will be a big boom. the school is not releasing the names of the student. virginia's former governor says he is innocent of corruption charges and is now looking to the u.s. supreme court for redemption. on friday, the court agreed to hear bob mcdonald's appeal. nbc news' justice correspondent broke this story. >> reporter: what his lawyers say is the kind ofç thing robe mcdonnell and to some extent his

wife did for this virginia man johnnie williams is basic constituent service, agreeing to meet with him, talk about it. it's the normal discourse of political conversation, his lawyers say. and to criminalize that, they say, would be a vast overreach. mcdonald never actually put his thumb on the scale of any government decision but johnnie williams never ended up getting anything out of the state of virginia. they say they can't bring corruption. the justice department argued in telling the court they should upheld his conviction, that's not how it works. as long as there's an agreement that an elected official will do something for somebody in exchange for money and favors, then that constitutes a corrupt agreement and it doesn't matter what the elected official actually does or whether the person that provides all the goodies actually gets what he wants. >> pete williams with that report right there. the court will take up the case in april. we expect to get a decision by the end of june. we can bet you'd love having
