by the gunfire. right now, firefighters are reminding you to check your smoke detectors after a woman was trapped in her burning home in temple hills. dorothy spencer is there live with the heroic action of neighbors and firefighters. >> reporter: this is the house, as you can see, still boarded up. the caution tape is outside the home. the entire family has been d displaced and the woman inside remains in the hospital in serious condition. >> i felt desperate trying to get the girl out because i felt she was my family, too. >> reporter: he felt compelled to act when he found out a neighbor, a young woman was trapped in the burning home. she was asleep in the basement when it started. he and others used a garden hose to try to beat back the flames. >> he tried to go in. i was spraying water to him. we couldn't get to the stairs so we couldn't get downstairs.

>> reporter: firefighters got here quickly and would the woman out. she had second degree burns over 40% of her body and smoke inhalation. >> she started moving and cou coughing and they took it right away to the hospital. >> reporter: fire investigators say the smoke detector in the home was not work something they had little time to get out. >> that's the first line of defense for people is the smoke alarm giving extra seconds to get out. >> reporter: firefighters went door-to-door and five five working homes without smoke detectors and installed new ones. with extreme weather approa approaching- - >> there are a lot of things people do to stay warm. we don't know whether that had anything to do with it at this point or not but the message is to stay warm safely. >> reporter: that's right. the fire chief says there is no excuse for any in prince george's county not to have a working smoke alarm in your home. if you don't have one or can't

him. his family says tonight, he's been left behind. we are devastated. three of the three americans have spent the night at this u.s. base in germany. the plan was to first take them to the hospital for medical and psychological evaluation before they can finally head back to the united states and their families. back to you. a maryland family shaken when a neighbor was cleaning his gun and it accidentally fired through the bedroom wall landing above her headboard. she was in that room doing her daughter's hair just minutes before the incident. there were more holes in the bathroom wall as well. fortunately nobody was hit. she kid not want to identify her self-but did speak us to on camera. >> any accident could have caused anybody's life. that's pretty scary.

the weather outlook the next two days if you're heading to the peace walk and parade. it will be windy and cold. you want your warmest gear. if you're going to a ski resort, bundle up and give that car battery a test especially if you've been putting off a new battery in the car. high temperature of 35 degrees. clouds increase throughout the day wednesday and overnight, flurries are possible. obviously lig only light snow right now, little or no accumulation. high of 42. and everyday running below the normal high, 43 degrees. on friday, it's looking like we'll be dealing with our first real shot at snow, temperatures hovering at freezing. blustery as well and watching the storm system very closely. i can't stress enough how much uncertainty there is in the forecast.
