>> lots of slipping and sliding, cars struggling to get uphill. check out this metro bus in south d.c. stuck after sliding on snow covered roads. at 9:30, the mayor's office began urging drivers to stay off the roads at night. look at our traffic map. that's not rush hour, a live look. it's been like this for hours now. we're already getting word about late starts at area school districts. prince william county schools just announce they'd will close tomorrow. >> more delays and closings will be scrolling on this half hour of the screen. we have heard from a lot of you asking if this is what a single inch does, how can we handle a blizzard? team 4 is on top of the forecast not just for tonight's blizzard but snow. >> we will see snow for the next

hour but because of the temperatures it will stick quickly to the roadways. >> reporter: temperatures well below freezing a 4 to 5 hour event for us? because it's been so cold that inch may stick on the ground and could coat the roads quickly. >> reporter: for this evening, road conditions will get slippery in many locations. >> it may get slippery. not all the roads were treated and our crews got caught right up in the middle of it. >> maybe you did, too. jackie bensen is in northwest d.c. >> reporter: take a look behind me. it touches your heart. this looks like an evening rush hour and some of these people have been trying to get home since 7:00 tonight. within minutes after a light snow started falling at 7:00 p.m., it became clear something very bad was happening.

the small amount of snow hitting very cold asphalt coated streets with a thin glaze of ice. >> it's very slippery and getting hard time to stop on the red light. >> reporter: there were clashes everywhere including this one on 16th street northwest at military road in d.c. paramedics stepped carefully as they placed an injured woman on a gurney and into a waiting ambulance. people sat going nowhere for hours, just trying to get home from work. >> a lot of congestion. i was on my way to class but decided to turn around and try to make it next wednesday. >> reporter: side streets and ramps blocked by cars that spun out on the ice. an update about 10:00 tonight, we began seeing the first salt truck, like a cork being pulled out of a bottle, the traffic backup started to ease a little bit. reports have been coming around on the major roads, we're

starting to see the delays ease. live in northwest. >> we have kris benson on the phone the director of public works. thanks for joining us. >> sure. no problem. >> chris, how many crews do you have on the roads right now and were you pretreating or did you pretreat at all tonight? >> we did. the district started the deployment this avenfternoon at 4:00 with a partial deployment. this clouincluded about 50 heav duty and light duty trucks. we were pretreating roads, overpasses, elevated structures in major corridors, and so once the actual precipitation started, snow started to fall, we saw the nature of the fall in terms of how heavy the flakes are and the duration.

this event lasted a bit longer than we expected. we have ramped up and have now tripled the number of trucks we'll have on the roads to make sure we clear the streets tonight, for tomorrow morning's commute. >> that's good to hear. people have been really struggling tonight, chris. any idea how many scents there have been out there -- accidents there have been out there? >> i don't have a sense. i am receiving the report as the public is from our unified office of communications. >> you definitely are making progress? >> we're definitely making progress, additional crews have been called in. we expect by midnight we'll have 150 trucks out in total making sure the district's roads are clear for tomorrow morning's commute. >> that sounds great. thank you for talking with us. that's chris shorter the

director of the d.c. department of public works. a similar story tonight in virginia. shomari stone is live in arling where the traffic slowed to a crawl. he was caught up in it. you've seen it all. >> reporter: that's right. we drove from d.c. to arlington to key boulevard near north ode street and what should take 20 minutes actually took us two hours. this street is a great example what a lot of drivers experience. look over there, you can see that woman, she's on the phone. her car moments ago, jumped the curve, she was going down the hill, sliding and went and jum jumped the curve. there's solid ice on this street. this is what they're dealing with. you can see that guy going down be very careful. if you move to the left there's a red pickup and that car also slid into another vehicle, very icy. lets roll video. roadways like this are very

treacherous. we saw a lot of accidents and drivers can't get traction on the roads, slipping and crashing into parked cars and hundreds sat in gridlock. some said, forget it, abandoned their car and left it on the side of the road and kept on walking. many demand dollars to know why vdot did not pretreat the roads. i got off the phone with a vdot spokesman and said they did not pretreat roads because the temperatures were in the 20s and the treatment would freeze. we will now hear from some drivers. >> i just want to go home. >> reporter: what was it like driving in this mess? >> terrible. i've been sitting in traffic one hour. >> i think there's only 1 or 2 millimeters of snow and gotten slick in a lot of areas causing a lot of problems. >> reporter: you're looking at the picture of the car jumping the curb. i talked to vdot and they have

in effect until midnight. this was posted until 11:00 this morning. plenty of warning. surprising they didn't have the salt trucks out earlier this afternoon. the next storm, that's the monster. it really is a blizzard monster. everybody in the green, d.c. to the east. frederick county, loudoun county, winds up to 60 miles an hour. winter storm watch, that's the blue, everybody will get heavy snow. the only difference between the two is the wind. we'll talk much more as we move on. this will be a crippling snowstorm, highways will be closed and numerous power out e outages and impacts will last into next week. i have the latest information coming up right now in a few minutes. not even the president's motorcade was immune to the rough stuff. it took over an hour for it to get from joint base andrews to the white house, a trip that normally takes about 25 minutes.

presidential suvs and vans slid right along with the rest of you and passed several crashes along the way. >> all this is just the beginning. we have up to 2 feet of snow coming on friday, saturday and sunday. d.c. mayor muriel bowser will release more details about her snow plan tomorrow. today, she says, the city has 20 new plows in its fleet this year and already asked for national guard vehicles and prepared to ask for more help if needed. a reminder if a snow emergency is declared, that's likely, do not park on snow emergency routes or you will face a big fine and your car will be towed. maryland governor larry hogan said his state is ready for the storm this year. he had a cabinet meeting focused on the storm. he said state agencies are coordinating all available resources to clear roads and manage potential incidents. >> everybody is paying attention and watching. we're prepared.

i would advise people not to react yet, get prepared and do your shopping and get ready before the crowds come in. >> maryland emergency management agency is up and running and able to assist local responders with any issues related to the storm. >> people are prepared to be snowed in and stocking up in essentials in case the power goes outside. at virginia dominion power they're working to make sure your lights stay on through the weekend and need all hands on deck to fix outages and fix things that go wrong. two factors they worry about, one, the wind and, two -- >> the quality of the snow is actually what we're more concerned with. wet snow heavy is more problematic. >> the combination of wind and wet snow can be the difference between a couple hundreds and couple thousand power outages. hear at the live desk tonight we're hearing blunt talk

mgm casino. 3500 will work inside. the resort includes a restaurant from prince george's native chef. project is expected to be finished by the end of the year. ice may have played a significant role in the downing of a plane into gaithersburg about a year ago. new documents from the national transportation safety board said the plane encountered icing conditions trying to land at the montgomery county air park but the pilot did not use the de-icing system and they believe it may have caused the plane to stall and slammed into a home 20 seconds later. the three men on board and marie gemmell and her two young children were all killed. police in d.c. have a homicide investigation tonight. officers were called to the 2200 block of anacostia road southeast just before 6:30 this evening. when they arrived on the scene they found a man had been shot

and later died. right now, they're trying to find out who did it and why. the principal of wilson high school in d.c. is trying to ease student concerns after a teen was stabbed at a fight outside the sears showroom store across the street from school. police are still looking for the two attackers. the student is going to be okay but the school is offering counsel to anybody who might need it. extreme heat to extreme cold, the year 2015 saw it all. scientists at nasa's goddard flight center said it was the warmest this year since record keeping began in 1880. the 15 warmest days have occurred since the year 2000. it's growing evidence weekends like the one we're about to experience have a lot to do with the earth's temperature. here on the east coast one month of ago it was 70 degrees fahrenheit, very unusual. now, it's really cold and you have more extremes and more

extreme weather events. >> no one has a crystal ball but scientists believe more extreme weather is about to come. >> we're about to get a big serving of extreme weather this weekend. it will start friday afternoon zwlchkts. >> the key to this is timing on friday. if it starts at 5:00, not quite as bad as if it starts at 1:00. that will have a lot of implications what we're seeing as far as school closures and things like that on friday. that's up in the air and what's not up in the air is how much snow we will get. it didn't take much tonight, about an inch of snow and only one area reported up to an inch. 495 and colesville road. take a look at the outer loop there. it is completely shut down and colesville road not moving. it was a little storm, a very little storm. we're talking about this yesterday and places like st. louis. it does have snow associated with it.

still light snow in the d.c. area and steady light snow, maybe another half-inch for you folks, a very light fluffy type snow what we will see early on. that winter advisory continues to midst night tonight and we continue to watch it get out. then, we're talking about the big storm. why we have the watches in effect for areas in the green and winter storm watch for areas in the blue. the only difference between the two, as i mentioned earlier, simply wind. what do you need for a blizzard, 35 miles an hour or exte$35 mil miles an hour wind gusts. we will definitely see that and up to 50 miles an hour. back to the west, you will have wind but 25 miles an hour. you don't meet the criteria for a blizzard but will have the winter storm and will become warnings most likely by tomorrow night. the clipper continues to move

by the end of the ballgame, they were without three in their starting lineup. but that didn't matter. they never trailed tonight against miami. nene in there and they are 4-0 when he starts. john wall. beautiful move to the basket. wizards up by six. later on in the quarter, a 10 point game. wall. 15 points and 12 rebounds. wizards run away with this game. ball movement here and nene, he had 16 points and 26 minutes of play. later on, more from the wizards, getting in on the action of the three ball, 18 points off to the bench. wizards beat the heat tonight, 106-87. next game for the wizards saturday at the verizon center against the jazz and that game is still on despite weather concerns.
