all over the place. it's been a frustrating and stressful 12 hours now. >> a lot of folks trying to make it home. in some case many of you still on the roads. it's 5:01. good morning. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> and i'm eun yang. let's check in with melissa mollet. >> it's a major mess. right now as aaron and eun just mentioned, a lot of folks still trying to make it home. this is the evening commute spilling over. look that. we are jammed there. a six-mile backup. bottom of the beltway, inner loop, outer loop. inner loop also has the right side blocked because of crash there. beltway at telegraph also not looking so hot burke the top of the beltway at connecticut, that's started to ease up quite a bit here in the past 20 minutes or so. you can see here, the outer loop at connecticut, we still have a police car on the scene of the

earlier crash. things are loosening up quite a bit. outer loop at old georgetown, we have a stalled vehicle. things are still icy. bottom of the beltway, you want to avoid that. that's just going to get worse as folks start heading out and adding to the mess. chuck? >> all right. thanks, melissa. team coverage of all the winter weather problems continues now. the blizzard watch is posted through the afternoon into saturday. heavy snow and wind. i showed you this just a second ago. i told you i'd detail out where the winners and losers are depending where you like snow. first snow likely at 4:00 or 5:00 tomorrow at the metro. earlier than that across central virginia. by 11:00 tomorrow night, a solid 3 to 6 inches of snow likely in the metro friday night. by the time you wake up saturday morning, a solid foot or more of snow across the metro except for

southernmost maryland. that's going to be the issue. how much the rain/snow line irks toward metro. as much as 25 or 26 inches out across parts of the shenandoah and blue ridge. here's our forecast. most of the metro, and the real issue is a solid 18 to 24 inches. there could be blowing and drifting. could have 3 to 5 feet before all is said and done. highways and roadways are likely to be closed. it's going to be a long lasting impact. this morning roads are icy in spots. temperatures way below freezing. today will be the day to get things done. we'll detail the high temperatures and talk more about the impact of the storm in a few. >> thank you, chuck. take a look at this scene here.

many of you had to deal with slippery roads. these are people push cargo up the hill. tires are skidding. there's just no traction it was bad out there. b.w. told us they did not pretreat roads in virginia because it was too cold to make a difference at that point. all right. we've got new school closings just into the newsroom. we just learned arlington county schools are closed. so are schools in prince william county. fairfax is opening two hours late though. schools in montgomery, prince george's and cal vert county are on a delay. spots vain yarks stafford, and king george counties are all opening two hours late. lex ya, falls church, fredericksburg, manassas city, and manassas park city schools all on on a two-hour delay. the federal government thus far is open right now. we're putting all the closures

on the nbc washington app. i tweeted them myself. they're also scrolling on the scene as well. d.c. public schools went on a two-hour delay, so add that to your list. d.c. public schools now on a two-hour delay. "storm team 4" meteorologist telling us we're going get at least 2 feet of snow. so far we know the city has 20 new plows in its fleet this year. the mayor has already asked the national guard for some vehicles and she's ready to ask for more help if it's needed. a reminder, if a snow emergency is declared in the district do, not park on the snow emergency routes. 'll probably get a big fine and get towed too. governor larry hogan says they're ready for the big blizzard. state agencies are coordinating all available resources to clear

the roads and manage potential incidents. >> salt on hand because we've had a very mild winter so far. all the gase are champing at the bit to plow some snow because they haven't been overworked and they're ready for the big one. >> the maryland emergency agency is ready with local responders for any issues related to the storm. while maryland sayless it's ready for the snow, delays in contracts of independent plows are raising concerns. some are worried there won't be enough to clear the streets. they say sha has been working for several days to clear up concussion related to requirements for the contractors. that's a big relief for contractors and residents who depend on them to clear the road. >> metro depen penpending on th. they can run trains in up to six inches of snow.

>> we're salting. the crews are out. what turned out to be a dusting turned out to be a little more. we need to bring in extra resources. some are experiencing being stuck in traffic themselves. it's kind of counterproductive at this point, but they're out there treating. they're making progress on the highway snoorks charlie, we know there were issues particularly on the beltway overnight with some pretty bad accidents. you do have any roads right now that are closed or you may have to close in the near future? >> i don't think there's anything that's closed but there are a couple of crashes on the prince county side down toward

this just into our newsroom. charles county is closed. we keep getting school closings in. we'll keep updating. i posted it on my facebook page as well. we're on a major blizzard watch. we're working to get you ready before the storm gets here. here are four things before you head out, especially about shoveling. you have to dress appropriately. dress in light layers that are easy to remove and don't restrict your movement. be sure to wear the proper boots that give you traction and

plows, spreading salt, major arterials on our secondary roads, getting them clear and passable. our crews continue to work throughout the night and will be working this morning to get residentials clear and treated. we've been doing this since yesterday evening. >> looking ahead, we're looking a monster storm on friday. what are you doing to make sure roads are passable and roads are safe? >> absolutely. we're gearing up before the storm came yesterday evening for a full deployment with all of our resources. we have additional contract resources for the storm on friday and saturday. we have resources in case we actually have to remove snow from district streets and

iciness left over from the little ail ber tall clipper last night. it was 307b8 inches of snow at the national airport but with the grould frozen late night, it was impop to see how much of an impact three quarters of an inch of snow could leave. today is the dayo get things done. heavy snow tomorrow afternoon. crippling and historic storm. blizzard watches are out for the entire d.c. metro area. likely to be updated to a blizzard warning. the difference, one difference. the winds. if you could have winds sustained at 30 miles an hour or hire, which i think we could do with this storm, that's what qualifies it as a blizzard. 30 to 45 miles an hour. looks line winds could be in the 40 to 55-mile-per-hour range. this is going to be a very hard wallop of snow.

i'll show you different come pouter outputs. this is our local model. 16 inches at national airport. out toward the blue ridge, more than two feet of snow. that's model number one. model number two. the american model gives 19 inches at national airport. notice the trend. heaviest amounts at i-95. 30 inches at winchester, lower achlts of the rain/snow mix. still, a significant storm. the european model, 23 inches at national airport and a solid foot at st. mary's county. it will probably be between 6 and 12 inches of snow. out toward the blue ridge where it's all snow all the time, snowfall amounts will be extreme. potentially as mu as 12 if we can maximize the snow in

drive is going to have slick conditions. normally you say a half inch, what's the big deal here. well, it's so cold out and there were a lot of situations where there wasn't any pretreating done, it froze to the ground. i was on clal hill. that was one of the areas that was worse this morning. basically once you got off the main roads in capital hills, there was a thin layer of slippery ice. i have four-wheel drive. i was in the lowest lock mode and still slipping around a bit. folks are going to want to take it easy out there. major rhodess, connecticut avenue, that's in decent shape, although there's snow along the sides. suitland park, i drove through there this morning. take it easy. it's still tough out there. back to you all in the studio. all of those tough conditions causing a lot of our school closures and delays today. we're updating this

the scene of a crash. this happened during rush hour last night in northern virginia on 495. the trooper was responding to a two-car crash when the van swerved to avoid hitting a car and struck him. he was taken to fairfax hospital and is expected to be okay. you'll want to download the washington, d.c. app. the huge blizzard is on its way. the d.c. schools already say they'll be closing early tomorrow. loudoun county schools rescheduled some weekend events to today. owe need to watch those on the road, including 20 new trucks. >> first respoernlds are going to be working overtime these next few days. firefighters, police officer, and ems crews in northern virginia are preparing for the

are prepare for the cold, some seniors need immediate help. >> if somebody's experiencing a medical emergency or there's a food crisis in the home. >> now, the district has 2,000 volunteers ready to shovel sidewalks for the seniors and also making sure they have food once the storm hits. washington's top five snowstorms have had 17 inches of snow. >> the most recent being snowmaggedon on february 5th and 6th of 2010. that time was similar to what we're tracking this week. here's video that knocked out hundreds of thousands that left many schools closed for days. the biggest snowstorm on record was 94 years ago when 28 inches of snow fell on january 27th and 28th in 1922. this storm was called the

knickerbocker storm as heavy snow caused the roof collapse of the knickerbocker theater in washington, d.c., unfortunately killing 9 8d and injureding 133 people. many people remember the blizzard of '96. i know i do. a nor'easter brought two waves of snow bringing at least 10 inches. flooding occurred because of warm temperatures leading to fast snowmelt. the other top two snow events had 20 inches and 19 inches. for more, open up our washington app and search "biggest snowstorm." as the area brace for the big storm, the university of maryland closes tomorrow. there will be people on hand to assist new students moving in and students will head back to class on monday unless you hear from us. they're making their final checks ahead of the storm. they'll review the plan and preparations today. he'll head to the county's sal
