11:30 am
we're seeing a lot of it gather on the ground toward richland, and going through the shenandoah valley. this is going to don't intense five after about the new hour. baltimore after about 2:00 p.m. and this is what we're expecting. yes, 20 to 30 inches of snow. when you wake up tomorrow morning, you're going have a foot of snow on the ground. get to where you need to go right now because after we get into the new hour, early afternoon, all bets are off because once it starts falling, it is going to gather on the ground all too quickly as we know because of those road temperatures. a little bit less in accumulation toward southern maryland because of sleet mixing in but still very impactful. guys? >> thank you. we're working ahead of you in prince george's county. >> that's right. we're doing everything we can to get you ready for the monster storm coming our way. prince george's county in landover, the county and the state will coordinate their earths with the truck, when outages happen, should they happen. they'll make sure they go out and get residents and take them to shelters if that is necessary. this is the hub to coordinate all of the county's resources so they can stay on top of this blizzard. that's the latest live. again, about an hour way from rushern baker aing sure us of the county's readiness. back to you. >> thank you, molette. crews have been out all morning to get ahead of the start of the blizzard before it gets here. "news4's" megan mcgrath is live to show us in leesburg how they're getting aflong that area. megan. >> reporter: hey, barbara. within the last couple of moments, the winds starting to pick up. nothing terrible but a little bit of a breeze. something serious is coming down in our direction or up in a

matter of hours. well, it's all about the preparation. we're here along route 7 in leesburg. you can see we don't have any snow on the ground. everything is looking good. the v-dot crews, they've been up and getting ready. it was an early day for them. you can see the trucks loading up with salt and the chemicals they need. they've got the plows on and they're going to be strategicing themselves and readying themselves for action. we're expecting a lot of snow, about 30 inches of snow in leesburg. there's one thing that vdot needs you to do, though, and that's cooperate and stay off the streets so they can clear the streets as quickly as possible. >> we're going to be working around the clock for however long it takes to get the roads safe. that's why we're asking people to stay home and allow us to do our job. if you're out there, when can't
11:34 am
do our job. >> reporter: they're asking folks to park on the odd side of the street. that's going to allow them to plow a wider area down those neighborhood streets and also keep in mind those neighborhood streets are going to be the last ones to be plowed. they're going to go through the major roadways and highways first. stay at home. stay at home. that's the advice. let them get a handle on things. keep in mind you're going to be socked in. now might be the time of the finish any last-minute shopping you need because later that's just not going to be an option. >> megan, thank you. pepco is wanting you to be up and running this weekend. they're warning you. they say they want to keep you safe. >> this is pepco calling with a special message. we're closely monitoring the approaching storm which may strike our service territory friday through saturday.
11:35 am
>> pepco says it's also coordinating with emergency management services. you can help out by reporting outages as soon as possible. >> the quality and the texture of the snow is going to dictate the amount of outages we get. if it's a wet heavy snow, it's going to lay on trees and tree limits. >> they have 4,000 personnel prepped and ready to go. crews are placed in high risk areas. salt trucks are stocked up and virginia dominion power says it's working to keep your lights on. how many outages depends on the snow. and breaking news right now, on the roads we still have a pretty big issue on the beltway. this is the outer loop here at landover road. a four-mile backup through that section. we had one crash here but it's out of the kwa. a backup has remained out of the way. so, again, it's about a four-mile stretch where we are slow.

an ice storm right now. paul, tell us what you're looking at. >> reporter: this morning we started with some rain around 1:00, 2:00 a.m. then we had some sleet mixed in. then snow and freezing rain. now we're seeing a little freezing mist and drizzle out here. this is still kind of the first half of the storm here across the carolinas. interstate 85 runs right through charlotte, and that's going to be the dividing line. north and west of there, we could see 1 to 2 feet of snow in western north carolina. there are mountains in western north carolina. while along the 85 corridor like here in charlotte, we could see perhaps a quarter to a half-inch of accumulating ice and air temperatures sitting around 30, 31 degrees. when it does fall as a liquid, it's going to freeze on top of things like the roadway. they've been plowing some of this. some testify main roads, they're slicy but drivable. the concern is once you get to the untreated areas, you'll have
11:46 am
ice form and more sleet and freezing rain on top of that, but it's not just the roads they're concerned about. the big concern is getting that ice -- picking up and depositing on power lines. they get heavy and britaining down the power lines. you could have hundreds of thousands of people without power, also without heat as temperatures will stay in the 20s and teens some of not a huge concern here but ice definitely a big concern in this part of the carolinas. but, again, around d.c., you could be dealing with some of your biggest snow in perhaps five or six years over the next 48 hours. reporting live paul good low from the weather channel back to you. >> well, let's hope at least it clears out. i know we've got a big game, a big championship at the bank of america stadium. hopefully everybody will have power back and hopefully we won't lose too much power around here. the fact that we've got blizzard warnings and the at of snow and
